You can screen a phone for pulse-width modulation (PWM) dimming at home, but no visual or camera check can prove a frequency or prove that a display never flickers. Set a steady gray or white screen to low brightness, move a pencil or finger quickly in front of it, and look for repeated, separated images. Then record the screen with another phone and look for moving dark bands. Repeat at several brightness levels and with any anti-flicker or special dimming modes enabled and disabled.

A repeated-image result or camera banding is evidence that the display output is pulsing under those conditions. A clean result is inconclusive: fast PWM, shutter timing, room lighting and the screen’s refresh timing can hide artifacts. Frequency, modulation depth and waveform require a light sensor or photodiode with suitable measurement equipment, or a credible instrument test of the exact phone configuration.

What PWM dimming means on a phone

OLED and LCD phones must reduce light output when you lower brightness. With PWM dimming, the display switches its light source on and off rapidly and changes the proportion of each cycle that is on. Your eyes usually integrate the cycles into a dimmer image, but motion, a camera sensor or a sensitive observer can reveal the modulation.

“DC dimming” is a different approach: the drive current or voltage is reduced more continuously. A phone can use both methods. The active method may change with brightness, refresh mode, software version or a user-facing anti-flicker option. Therefore, “this phone has PWM” is often too broad a description; the useful question is whether it pulses at the brightness and setting you actually use.

  • 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)

Xiaomi’s official support information for the Xiaomi 14T illustrates this split: it describes DC dimming at high brightness and high-frequency PWM at low brightness. That is a statement about that model and its documented behavior, not a rule for every Xiaomi phone or every OLED display.

What each home test can tell you

Method What you do What a positive result means What it cannot establish
Pencil or finger motion test Move an object quickly across a uniform gray or white screen. Distinct, repeated images suggest pulsing during the test. It does not measure PWM frequency, modulation depth or waveform. A smooth blur does not rule out fast flicker.
Second-phone camera test Record the display and inspect the video for moving dark bands or stripes. Banding is a clue that display and camera timing are interacting with periodic light output. Shutter speed, frame rate, rolling shutter and room lighting can hide or create bands. Band speed is not a frequency reading.
Manufacturer documentation Check the exact model’s display or eye-comfort documentation. Terms such as “DC dimming” or “high-frequency PWM” describe a mode or claimed behavior. Wording may not cover every brightness level, software version or enabled setting.
Photodiode or light-sensor measurement Record light output over time with suitable electronics and analyze the signal. Can reveal periodicity and waveform under controlled conditions. Requires appropriate equipment and technique; a sensor result still applies to the tested configuration.

Prepare a repeatable test

Good conditions matter more than an elaborate setup. Write down the phone model, software version if known, brightness percentage or slider position, refresh-rate setting, and any eye-comfort, anti-flicker, DC-dimming or “flicker reduction” option. If automatic brightness keeps moving the slider, turn it off temporarily. The setting name is not universal, so use the closest equivalent on your phone.

  • Work in a dim room so reflections and changing ambient light do not distract you.
  • Clean the screen and remove a strongly tinted privacy protector if it makes the test hard to see.
  • Use a static, full-screen gray or white field. A browser test page is fine for supplying a uniform field, but it is not a PWM meter.
  • Start at a genuinely low brightness, then repeat at medium and high positions. Do not assume that one level represents the whole brightness range.
  • Keep the screen awake and avoid adaptive display changes while you observe it.

Do not stare at the screen for a long period if it feels uncomfortable. These checks are observational; they are not a medical test for eye strain or headache causes.

Run the pencil or finger motion test

  1. Open a static gray or white image or webpage and make it fill the display.
  2. Set brightness low. Record the approximate slider position in your notes.
  3. Hold a pencil, pen or fingertip a short distance in front of the screen.
  4. Move it quickly from one side to the other, then repeat in the opposite direction. Try a few speeds rather than one carefully chosen motion.
  5. Look for several crisp, separated copies of the object. They may appear as a row of repeated pencil tips or fingers instead of one continuous blur.
  6. Repeat at medium and high brightness, and with any anti-flicker or special dimming mode changed one setting at a time.

Repeated, distinct images are a visual sign that the display’s light output is varying quickly enough to interact with the motion. If the pattern weakens or disappears as brightness rises, that is consistent with brightness-dependent dimming behavior. It is not a calibrated threshold and does not tell you the pulse rate.

A smooth blur is only a negative result for this particular visual condition. Very fast PWM can blend during the motion, and people differ in how easily they see the effect. Do not report “no PWM” solely because the pencil looked continuous.

Check the screen with a second phone camera

  1. Leave the test phone on the same static gray or white field and brightness used for the motion check.
  2. Use a second phone to record the display. Keep the camera pointed squarely at the screen and avoid filming a bright lamp or window at the same time.
  3. Watch the preview and review the saved clip. Look for dark horizontal or vertical bands, stripes or ripples that move across the screen.
  4. Repeat at low, medium and high brightness. If the camera app exposes shutter speed, frame rate or exposure controls, try more than one setting and note which settings were used.
  5. Repeat with the test phone’s eye-comfort, anti-flicker or special dimming option changed, if available.

HONOR Support explains that some OLED screens adjust brightness through the pulse-width modulation (PWM) method and that camera capture can show ripples or stripes. The camera and display have separate timing systems, so a band is evidence of an interaction, not a direct measurement. Some shutter speeds hide the band; others make it prominent. Ambient lamps, LED lighting and reflections can also introduce stripes unrelated to the phone’s panel.

Do not count the bands and convert that count into hertz. Video frame rate, rolling-shutter scan timing and exposure determine how a periodic signal is sampled. The apparent speed or number of bands is not the display’s PWM frequency.

Repeat the check across brightness and modes

Testing only at maximum brightness can miss a behavior that appears when the display is dimmed. Conversely, a low-brightness result may not apply when you use the phone outdoors. Make a small test log so another person could reproduce your observation.

Item to record Example entry
Exact model Full model name and storage or regional variant when it is shown in Settings.
Software Operating-system version and display-related update, if known.
Brightness Low, medium and high, or the slider percentage shown by the phone.
Display mode Refresh rate, color mode, reading mode, eye comfort, anti-flicker or DC-dimming option.
Visual test Repeated images, smooth blur, or uncertain.
Camera test Bands visible, not visible, and the camera settings used.
Environment Room lighting, reflections and whether automatic brightness was disabled.

For example, if repeated images appear only at 15 percent brightness and disappear at 70 percent, report that exact condition rather than labeling the entire phone as continuously flickering. A manufacturer description such as “high-frequency PWM” likewise needs the brightness and mode qualification supplied by the documentation.

How to interpret a positive or negative result

Repeated images in the motion test

This is the strongest simple visual clue that the display is pulsing under the tested conditions. It still does not identify the pulse frequency or establish how noticeable the effect will be to another person.

Bands in the camera video

Banding suggests that periodic display output and the camera’s sampling timing interacted. It may reveal flicker that is difficult to see directly, but it can also be caused by another light source or a camera setting. Change the camera exposure or frame rate and retest; a band that changes or disappears with those settings is still useful evidence of timing interaction, not a calibrated specification.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

No visible effect

A clean motion test and clean video mean only that those tests did not expose an artifact. Fast PWM, a favorable shutter speed, high display frequency, bright ambient light or individual visual differences can all produce a clean result. If comfort is the reason for testing, pay attention to your own symptoms and consider a different display or brightness strategy rather than treating a negative home test as proof of safety.

What browser tests and phone apps can and cannot do

A webpage can supply a steady gray field and a convenient place to move a pencil. It cannot sense the light coming from the display and therefore cannot calculate PWM frequency. An animation or flashing pattern on a webpage is content generated by the phone; it is not a measurement of the panel’s physical light output.

Likewise, an app that asks you to photograph the screen can help you observe bands, but the phone camera remains a timing-dependent sensor. Unless an app is paired with an external calibrated light sensor, its result should be treated as a screening clue.

When you need an actual frequency or waveform

Use an instrument-based measurement when you need to compare two models rigorously, document a workplace or accessibility requirement, or distinguish PWM from another source of flicker. A photodiode or suitable light sensor converts changes in light output into an electrical signal. An oscilloscope or equivalent acquisition system can then show periodicity, duty cycle and waveform shape.

  1. Place the sensor so it measures the active display area consistently. Block stray room light as far as practical.
  2. Set a fixed brightness and display mode, and record those conditions.
  3. Capture the sensor signal long enough to see repeated cycles and inspect it for periodic components.
  4. Repeat at several brightness levels, because the dimming method can change across the slider.
  5. Save the measurement conditions with the trace. A frequency number without brightness, mode, refresh rate and equipment details is not a complete comparison.

The measurement methodology described by display-testing specialists uses a light sensor and, when warranted, an oscilloscope while recording multiple brightness levels. This is a different task from pointing a camera at the screen; it needs appropriate electronics, sampling, shielding and interpretation. Do not buy specialist equipment solely to perform the basic household screen, pencil and camera checks.

How to compare two phone models fairly

Compare like with like. A measurement from one regional variant or software build does not automatically describe another. Use a table that keeps the conditions attached to every result.

Comparison field Why it matters
Exact model and software Panel suppliers, firmware and regional variants can differ.
Brightness level PWM or DC behavior may change across the slider.
Dimming mode Anti-flicker, eye-comfort and high-refresh settings can alter output.
Measured frequency Only meaningful when obtained with a stated instrument method and conditions.
Modulation depth and waveform Two displays with the same nominal frequency can have different signal shapes and light-output swings.
Evidence type Label the result as instrument measurement, camera observation or visual screening.

There is no universal frequency number in the available manufacturer guidance that guarantees comfort for every user. Avoid declaring one phone comfortable for everyone based on a single frequency figure. Report the tested conditions and let readers decide whether they match their use.

Troubleshoot confusing results

The camera shows bands everywhere

Turn off nearby LED lamps, move away from fluorescent or rapidly dimmed lights, and cover reflections. Record a blank wall or another non-screen surface under the same room lighting. If stripes remain in the room, the camera or lighting is contributing to the artifact.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The camera shows nothing but the pencil test shows repeats

This is possible. The camera’s shutter and frame timing may be hiding the display modulation while your eyes detect repeated images during motion. Keep the visual result and report the camera settings instead of choosing one test as the “correct” answer.

The camera shows bands only at one brightness

That pattern is consistent with brightness-dependent behavior, but retest after disabling automatic brightness and record the exact slider position. Also check whether the phone changed refresh rate or an eye-comfort mode automatically.

The pattern changes after an update

Record the new software version and repeat the same brightness and mode sequence. Display control is partly software-defined, so an older observation may not describe the current build.

You cannot see repeated images but the screen feels uncomfortable

Do not use the home test to dismiss your experience. Reduce brightness only if that improves comfort, try a different display mode, take breaks and seek professional advice for persistent or severe symptoms. A clean screen test does not diagnose the cause of discomfort.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Practical conclusions from a home check

A careful home check can answer a narrow question: “Did this phone show evidence of pulsing at this brightness and setting?” It cannot answer “What is the exact PWM frequency?” or “Will every user be comfortable?” For those questions, use a model-specific instrument test or measure the light output with a photodiode and appropriate equipment.

Keep your notes, including negative results. If you later compare phones or change software settings, the conditions let you tell a real change from a camera artifact or an inconsistent test.
