The quickest check is the status bar: a Wi‑Fi symbol normally means your phone is connected to Wi‑Fi, while 4G, LTE, or 5G shows that a cellular network is available. For certainty, open your network settings and identify the selected Wi‑Fi network. If you need to know which connection is actually carrying traffic, briefly switch Wi‑Fi off, test the same page or app, then restore Wi‑Fi and compare.

What the icons can—and cannot—tell you

Phone indicators describe connection status, but they do not always prove which connection an app is using at that moment. A Wi‑Fi symbol generally means the phone has joined a wireless network. Cellular bars and a label such as LTE, 4G or 5G show that the phone can reach a mobile network; they do not, by themselves, prove that the current app is using cellular data.

When Wi‑Fi is connected, Android may hide or de-emphasize the mobile-data indicator. Conversely, a cellular label can remain visible even while normal internet traffic is going through Wi‑Fi. Some supported iPhones can also combine cellular data with Wi‑Fi when Wi‑Fi is weak, busy or connected without usable internet access. That feature is called Connectivity Assist in current Apple guidance.

Check What it tells you Speed Certainty about current traffic Effect on connectivity
Status-bar icon Whether the phone appears connected to Wi‑Fi or a cellular network Fastest Useful indication, but not conclusive when both radios are available None
Network settings The Wi‑Fi network selected by the phone Quick Confirms the Wi‑Fi association; it does not show every app’s live route None
Wi‑Fi/mobile-data toggle test Which connection can load the same service Slower Most practical diagnostic check Brief interruption while a connection is disabled
Usage settings Recorded cellular-data consumption by app or service Quick after setup Shows usage totals, not necessarily the route of one request None

Check an iPhone

Read the status bar

When an iPhone is connected to Wi‑Fi, a Wi‑Fi icon appears in the status bar. Cellular bars and a 4G, LTE or 5G label indicate mobile-network availability. If the Wi‑Fi icon is present, ordinary internet traffic will normally use the connected Wi‑Fi network, but the icon alone does not rule out Apple’s cellular fallback behavior.

On an iPhone with Face ID, open Control Center by swiping down from the upper-right corner to see the Wi‑Fi control and its current state. On models with a Home button, swipe up from the bottom. This is a fast visual check, but use the full Settings page when you need to identify the network name.

Confirm the selected Wi‑Fi network

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap Wi‑Fi.
  3. Find the network with a blue checkmark. That is the network the iPhone has selected.
  4. If the network name is followed by a warning such as no internet access, the phone may be associated with Wi‑Fi without being able to reach the internet.

The checkmark confirms the Wi‑Fi association, not that every destination is reachable. A hotel, airport or café network may require a sign-in page before it provides internet access. If a page will not load, open a browser and complete any network sign-in prompt, then check the Wi‑Fi page again.

Review cellular-data access and app totals

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap Cellular (called Mobile Data in some regions or software versions).
  3. Make sure the main Cellular Data switch is on or off as intended.
  4. Scroll to the app list to see each app’s recorded cellular-data use.
  5. Use the switch beside an app to prevent that app from using cellular data. It can still use Wi‑Fi.

Turning cellular data off makes the iPhone use Wi‑Fi only for data services. This is a useful confirmation step when you want to prevent an app from silently falling back to the mobile network. Apple notes that the totals shown on the iPhone may not align with the carrier’s current billing period. For the most accurate amount billed in the current period, check with your carrier.

Understand Connectivity Assist

Current Apple documentation calls the automatic fallback feature Connectivity Assist and places it in Wi‑Fi settings. Apple says it can use cellular data in addition to Wi‑Fi when Wi‑Fi is slow, busy or not connected to the internet. The feature is intended to keep a connection working in places such as a backyard, driveway, coffee shop, airport or sports venue.

“Connectivity Assist uses cellular data to improve your connection when Wi‑Fi is slow or unusable — in places like your backyard or driveway, or at coffee shops, airports, sports venues, and everywhere in between.”

— Apple Support, “About Connectivity Assist”

Availability depends on the iPhone’s system software and applicable settings. Apple says Connectivity Assist supersedes Wi‑Fi Assist; if Wi‑Fi Assist was enabled before an update, Connectivity Assist is enabled by default after the update. Because it may use cellular data while the Wi‑Fi icon remains visible, a status-bar glance cannot guarantee that no mobile data was consumed.

Check an Android phone

Confirm the network in Internet settings

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap Network & internet.
  3. Tap Internet.
  4. Inspect the selected Wi‑Fi network. The connected network is shown as the active choice, while saved networks may be listed separately.

Android is customized by each manufacturer, so your phone may use Connections, Wi‑Fi, Network connections or another label instead. If you cannot find the menu, use the Settings search box for Wi‑Fi, Internet or mobile data. The exact wording and screen layout can change with the phone model and Android version.

Interpret Android status indicators

A Wi‑Fi symbol in the status bar normally means the phone is connected to a Wi‑Fi network. A cellular icon or 4G/5G label indicates a mobile connection is available. Android can hide the mobile-data indicator while Wi‑Fi is active, so the absence of a 4G or 5G symbol is not proof that mobile data is disabled. Likewise, seeing cellular bars does not prove that the current app is using cellular data.

To determine whether Wi‑Fi has usable internet access, open the app or page that matters to you rather than relying only on the icon. A phone can remain connected to a router that has lost its upstream internet connection.

Use Android’s connection-switching test

  1. Open the page or app you want to diagnose and note what it displays.
  2. In Settings > Network & internet > Internet (or your manufacturer’s equivalent), turn Wi‑Fi off.
  3. Ensure Mobile data is on, then reload the same page or repeat the same action.
  4. Record whether it works, loads more slowly, or fails.
  5. Turn Wi‑Fi back on and wait for the phone to reconnect to the intended network.
  6. Repeat the action once more with Wi‑Fi restored.

Google recommends switching Wi‑Fi and mobile data to see whether connectivity changes. Test the same destination each time; changing both the network and the app makes the result difficult to interpret. Keep the test short if your mobile plan is limited, and restore the original switches when finished.

What Android usage screens do and do not measure

Android provides usage views that can help identify recorded data consumption. Google also documents a network-data screen for Google Play services on Android 7 and later. That screen reports usage by Google Play services; it is not a universal tally of every app’s current connection. For a broader view, use your phone’s built-in data-usage page, whose location and labels vary by manufacturer.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A usage counter is historical accounting. It can tell you that cellular data was consumed during a period, but it cannot prove which connection carried one particular image, message or video request. Pair it with the settings check or the short toggle test when the distinction matters.

The most reliable practical test

If the status bar and settings leave you uncertain, isolate one connection at a time. The method is safe when performed briefly and reversed immediately.

Test Wi‑Fi first

  1. Connect to the Wi‑Fi network you want to evaluate.
  2. Open a page or app that requires internet access.
  3. Turn mobile data off temporarily while leaving Wi‑Fi on. On an iPhone, use Settings > Cellular/Mobile Data; on Android, use the mobile-data control in your Internet or Connections settings.
  4. Reload the same page or repeat the same action.
  5. If it works, Wi‑Fi is providing the usable data path for that test. If it fails, the Wi‑Fi network may have no internet access, may require sign-in, or the app may be unavailable for another reason.

Test mobile data

  1. Turn Wi‑Fi off.
  2. Turn mobile data on.
  3. Repeat exactly the same page load or in-app action.
  4. If it works only in this state, cellular data is the connection that successfully carried the test.
  5. Turn Wi‑Fi back on and restore the original mobile-data setting.

The test demonstrates which connection can reach the service under those conditions. It does not measure speed, signal quality or the amount of data consumed. A result can change if the Wi‑Fi network, cellular signal or service itself changes between attempts.

How to read common results

What you see Likely explanation Next action
Wi‑Fi icon and a selected network; page loads with cellular data off Wi‑Fi is carrying the test Leave Wi‑Fi on and keep the cellular setting you prefer
Wi‑Fi icon, but page fails until Wi‑Fi is turned off The phone is associated with Wi‑Fi, but that network lacks usable internet or requires sign-in Open the Wi‑Fi details, complete any sign-in, or use another network
No Wi‑Fi icon; page loads with 4G/LTE/5G Mobile data is carrying the test Check the app’s cellular permission and your plan’s allowance if usage matters
Wi‑Fi icon remains while cellular usage rises On supported iPhones, Connectivity Assist may be supplementing weak or unusable Wi‑Fi Review Connectivity Assist and per-app cellular settings
Neither connection loads the page The issue may be the service, account, signal, router or sign-in process rather than the selected radio Try another known-working page, then repeat the isolation test later

Prevent unexpected mobile-data use

On iPhone

  • Open Settings > Cellular/Mobile Data and switch off cellular access for data-heavy or nonessential apps.
  • Turn cellular data off entirely when you need Wi‑Fi-only data services, then turn it back on when you leave Wi‑Fi.
  • Review the app list after a test or at the end of your billing period. Treat the iPhone’s counter as a device estimate, not a guaranteed match for the carrier’s current-period total.
  • Check the Wi‑Fi settings for Connectivity Assist if cellular use while connected to Wi‑Fi is unexpected.

On Android

  • Use the phone’s Internet or Connections settings to turn mobile data off during a controlled Wi‑Fi test.
  • Search Settings for data usage or mobile data to find app-level controls; the exact menu depends on the manufacturer and software version.
  • Use Google Play services’ documented usage screen only for that service, not as a complete reading of all app traffic.

Troubleshooting when the answer is still unclear

The Wi‑Fi icon is present, but there is no internet

Being joined to a wireless network and having internet access are separate conditions. Check the selected network in Settings, look for a sign-in or “no internet” warning, and test a second page. If the same network fails while mobile data succeeds, the Wi‑Fi connection is the limiting link.

The phone keeps switching behavior

Weak, busy or unusable Wi‑Fi can trigger automatic fallback on supported iPhones. During diagnosis, turn mobile data off temporarily so that a successful page load can be attributed to Wi‑Fi. Restore the setting afterward.

The menu names do not match

Android manufacturers change labels and menu paths. Use Settings search rather than guessing, and look for Wi‑Fi, Internet, Connections or Mobile data. On iPhone, the equivalent cellular page may be labeled Cellular or Mobile Data depending on region and software.

The usage total does not match the bill

Device counters and carrier billing periods may start and end on different dates. Apple specifically advises contacting the carrier for the most accurate current-period cellular amount. Use the phone’s counters to identify trends or individual apps, not to dispute a billed total without carrier confirmation.
