To check LineageOS compatibility, identify your phone’s exact model number, find the matching device page in the official LineageOS Wiki, and confirm three separate things: the device or codename matches, the page is currently maintained, and a guide exists for the LineageOS version you intend to use. A familiar retail name, an old forum post, or an unofficial build is not enough.
What “supported by LineageOS” actually means
LineageOS support is not a single yes-or-no label. A reliable check answers several related questions:
- Is there an official device page? The LineageOS Wiki identifies devices by commercial names, model numbers and internal codenames.
- Does that page match your exact variant? Different regional, carrier or hardware variants can use different instructions even when they share a product-family name.
- Is the device still maintained? A page can exist for a phone that is no longer receiving current official builds or guidance.
- Is support available for your intended LineageOS release? A guide written for an older release may not describe the current installation process.
- Can your specific phone satisfy the guide’s prerequisites? Required stock firmware, bootloader conditions, recovery steps and model-number restrictions are device-specific.
For practical purposes, call a phone “currently supported” only when its official page matches the exact variant, shows an active maintenance status, and provides instructions for the relevant LineageOS version. Treat those checks separately rather than inferring one from another.

Start with the model identifier, not the name printed in advertising. A broad name such as a product family can cover several hardware versions. The model number shown in Android settings, on the original packaging or on the handset itself is the useful identifier.

Where to find the model number
- Open the phone’s Settings app and look under the device-information or about-phone section.
- Check the label on the back, SIM tray or other printed hardware marking if the phone’s software no longer starts.
- Look at the original box or purchase documentation.
Record the complete model string, including letters, numbers and regional suffixes. Do not remove a carrier or region code because it looks unfamiliar. An official guide may require an exact model-number match, and a near match can represent different radios, partitions, firmware or bootloader behavior.
Do not use these shortcuts
- Do not rely only on the retail name.
- Do not assume that two phones with similar names are interchangeable.
- Do not assume that a Wi-Fi-only, carrier, regional or storage variant follows the same procedure as another version.
- Do not treat the Android settings name as the codename. The codename is normally shown on the LineageOS device page or in its guide.
Step 2: Locate the official LineageOS device page
Use the LineageOS Wiki as the verification source. Search using the commercial name together with the model number when possible, then inspect the result rather than opening the first forum or download link you find. Official device pages identify the phone’s supported names and codename and may provide a variant selector.
Confirm that the page is the right device
- Compare the model number on the page with the identifier you recorded.
- Check the listed commercial names and hardware description.
- Note the device codename exactly, including spelling and capitalization.
- If the page offers a variant selector, select the entry that matches your model or region before reading the instructions.
- Open the installation guide linked from that device page, not a guide copied to another site.
A page that merely mentions your product family is not sufficient. The page must establish that your exact variant belongs to that device entry. Variant pages can also warn that some differences are not shown in a comparison, so do not infer compatibility from a partial similarities list.

Step 3: Check maintenance status and release information
After finding the page, look for its maintenance notice and the LineageOS version named in the guide. These are separate checks.
Maintenance status
Some official pages explicitly state that a device is no longer maintained. The LineageOS Wiki’s “Info about Z00L,” for example, is an illustration of a device page carrying that kind of notice. A page existing in the Wiki does not prove that current builds are available. If a page says that maintenance has ended, treat the phone as unsupported for current official development unless the Wiki provides a newer, maintained device entry.
Version-specific documentation
Installation instructions can remain online after the release for which they were written is no longer current. The “Install LineageOS on flo” material illustrates two common warnings: a device may migrate from one codename to a newer build name, and a guide may be marked as applying to a legacy LineageOS version. Read the version heading, date or release language on the page. Do not assume that an old guide automatically applies to the latest release.

Codename changes
A codename migration can make a historical search misleading. Searching only for an old codename may lead to a legacy page, while the maintained instructions use a newer build name. Search the commercial name and model number as well as any codename you find, and follow the current device page’s links.

Compatibility is not confirmed until the guide’s prerequisites match your phone. Read the full document before downloading files or changing the bootloader.
Model and variant requirements
Find every model-number statement in the guide. If it lists specific supported numbers, your identifier must appear exactly as required. If your number is absent, stop and seek a device page that explicitly covers it; do not substitute a similar model.
Stock firmware requirements
Some guides require a particular stock-firmware version before LineageOS can be installed. The “Install LineageOS on merlinx” guide is an example: it specifies required stock firmware and warns that using the wrong firmware can lead to installation failure, crashes or permanent damage. Firmware requirements are not transferable between phones. Use only the version and procedure stated for your own device page.
Bootloader and recovery requirements
Check whether the guide requires an unlockable bootloader, a particular recovery image, or a specified sequence of fastboot or recovery commands. The “Install LineageOS on earth” guide demonstrates why this matters: its device-specific instructions include model and bootloader conditions and warn that unlocking can erase user data.

Some guides, including “Install LineageOS on G,” require a computer and USB connection and use Android debugging or fastboot tools. These are installation prerequisites, not evidence that every phone with the same commercial name is supported. Confirm the operating-system, cable, driver and command-line requirements in your exact guide.

How to interpret variants, shared builds and codenames
One build can cover several commercial names
LineageOS may publish one device entry for more than one commercial name. The “Upgrade LineageOS on caprip” material illustrates that several names can share a build. That does not eliminate the need to check your model number: the shared build still has a defined set of hardware variants and a specific guide.
A variant selector is authoritative for that page
The “Info about clark variants” material illustrates a page with selectable variants. Use the selector to choose the exact model before following links or comparing requirements. If your model is not offered, do not select the closest-looking entry and assume equivalence.
Partial comparisons are not proof
Variant pages can omit differences from their comparison display. A matching processor, screen size or retail name is therefore only a clue. The installation guide’s model, firmware and bootloader requirements take precedence.
A decision checklist you can use before installing
- Write down the identifier: record the complete model number from Settings, the hardware label or the packaging.
- Search the official Wiki: use the commercial name, model number and any discovered codename.
- Open the device page: verify the listed names and codename.
- Select the variant: if a selector appears, choose the exact model or regional entry.
- Read the status notice: record whether the page says the device is maintained or no longer maintained.
- Check the release: confirm that the guide corresponds to the LineageOS version you plan to use and is not labeled legacy.
- Match the prerequisites: verify model number, stock firmware, bootloader state, recovery and computer requirements.
- Stop on a mismatch: do not flash files intended for another variant, codename or release.
If every item matches, you have evidence of official support for that specific device and version. If one item is unresolved, the correct result is “not yet verified,” not “probably compatible.”
Official support versus unofficial builds
Phones often appear in forum posts, third-party repositories or community build lists even when the LineageOS Wiki has no maintained official page. An unofficial build may boot and may be useful to an experienced developer, but it does not establish current official support.
For this check, keep the categories distinct:

Recovery: return to Settings or the hardware label, record the full identifier and re-check the device page’s model list or variant selector.
“The old codename appears in a search result”
Why it fails: support can migrate to a newer codename, or the result can document only a legacy release.
Recovery: search the commercial name and exact model again, then follow the current Wiki entry and inspect its release wording.
“A page exists, so the phone is still supported”
Why it fails: the Wiki retains information for devices that are no longer maintained.
Recovery: read the maintenance notice directly and look for a current device entry rather than relying on the page’s existence.

“The firmware is close enough”
Why it fails: firmware requirements differ by device, and the merlinx guide warns that wrong firmware can cause failed installation, crashes or permanent damage.

Recovery: stop before flashing and obtain the exact stock-firmware version named by your own guide.
“Unlocking is harmless because I am only checking compatibility”
Why it fails: unlocking is an installation action, not part of the information check, and official guidance warns that it can erase data.
Recovery: finish the compatibility check first. If you proceed later, back up data and read the entire bootloader section before confirming the unlock.

Absence of an obvious result is not proof that the phone is impossible to support, but it is proof that you have not verified official support. Try the following without substituting another model:
- Search the exact model number without punctuation changes, then with the commercial name.
- Search any codename shown by the phone or by an official-looking result, while checking whether it is current or historical.
- Look for a variant selector or a page listing multiple commercial names under one build.
- Check whether the only available material is labeled unofficial, experimental or legacy.
- Do not install until an official page and guide identify your exact variant.
If the Wiki has no matching maintained page, the responsible conclusion is that current official support is unconfirmed. You can revisit the Wiki later, because device maintenance and codenames can change.
Prepare safely after compatibility is confirmed
The support check itself should not modify the phone. Installation is a separate operation with irreversible points.
- Back up photos, messages, authentication data and any files you cannot replace.
- Read the complete guide for your exact variant before downloading recovery or firmware files.
- Confirm the required stock-firmware version and bootloader condition.
- Understand that bootloader unlocking may erase the phone.
- Use the computer, USB connection and adb or fastboot tools specified by the guide.
- Stop if a command, file name or model number does not match the official instructions.
Do not generalize any of these requirements from another phone. Even devices sharing a build or commercial family can have different prerequisites.

Bottom line
Check the exact model number, use the official LineageOS Wiki device page, select the correct variant, read the maintenance and release notices, and follow only the guide for that device. A shared product name, migrated codename, old page or unofficial build can create a convincing but unsafe false positive. Do not begin installation until the model, codename, maintenance status, LineageOS version and device-specific prerequisites all agree.
