Check 5G in two separate steps: read the network label in your phone’s status area, then turn off Wi‑Fi and run a cellular speed test. The 5G icon tells you what network status the phone reports; it does not tell you the download or upload rate you are receiving. A speed result is a measurement of that connection at one place and time.
Status check and speed check answer different questions
Use the status indicator to answer, “Is my phone reporting a 5G connection?” Use a speed test to answer, “How fast is mobile data working right now?” Keeping those questions separate prevents the most common mistake: treating a 5G logo as a performance score.
| Check | What it tells you | What it cannot establish |
|---|---|---|
| 5G icon or network-status screen | The network state the handset and carrier are reporting, subject to the phone model, software, carrier and region. | A guaranteed download speed, upload speed, latency or bandwidth. |
| Cellular speed test | Observed download and upload throughput, and often latency, for that test. | A constant rate everywhere, a carrier-wide promise or proof that every 5G connection will perform the same way. |
Android Developers states the limitation directly: “While you can detect if you are connected to a 5G network, you cannot assume meteredness, connection speed, nor bandwidth from this signal.” See Android’s 5G documentation.
How to check 5G on an iPhone
Read the status-area label
Look at the cellular status area near the signal bars. Apple’s iPhone status-icon guide lists several labels that can appear when a supported iPhone can connect through a carrier’s 5G network:
#1 Best Overall
- Valued Carpenter Pencil Set: You will get 2 pcs solid carpenter pencils with 26 piece 2.8 mm refills, 1 replaceable sharpener, 1 plastic storage box.The complete carpenter pencils combination allows you to finish your work faster and more easily
- Deep Hole Marker Pencil: The deep-hole construction pencils adopts 45mm elongated tip design, which is more convenient to mark in the small hole or in other tight areas that other carpenter markers cannot reach
- Carpenter Pencils with Sharpener: The sharpener is screwed into the top of the work pencil, which won't get lost either. Built-in pencil sharpener that keep the lead with pointed and smooth to Improves line of sight in fine work
- Stronger Solid Lead: This work pencil is matched with a 2.8 mm thick lead , which is much thicker and stronger during the drawing process of construction work, it will not break or damage easily
- Marks on Various Surfaces: 3 colors solid construction pencil can marks on various surfaces,such as metal, plastic, wood, paper etc. Ideals for woodworkers, contractors, craftsmen, builders, merchants and masons
- 5G indicates that the carrier’s 5G network is available to the iPhone.
- 5G UC, 5G+ and 5G UW are carrier-specific 5G labels. Their exact availability depends on the carrier, iPhone model and region.
- LTE indicates an LTE connection rather than a displayed 5G connection.
- 5G E is listed separately by Apple; do not automatically treat that label as equivalent to the 5G indicators above.
The label is a first check, not a speed measurement. Apple’s wording means the network is available and the supported phone can connect over it; it does not promise a particular rate or radio condition.
Check the line used for mobile data on a dual-SIM iPhone
If two cellular lines are installed, verify which line is selected for cellular data. The status display distinguishes the line being used for data, so a 5G-capable line may not be the line carrying your test. In Settings, open Cellular, select Cellular Data, and confirm the intended line before testing. Menu names can vary slightly by iOS release and carrier configuration.
How to check 5G on Android
Start with the status bar
Most Android phones show a 5G label near the signal indicator when the handset reports a 5G connection. The wording, icon design and conditions for displaying it differ by manufacturer, Android version, carrier and region. Android’s platform detection APIs can identify 5G New Radio (NR) standalone and non-standalone states, but detection itself does not reveal speed, bandwidth or whether data is metered.
Standalone and non-standalone describe how the 5G radio is deployed with the network; they are technical connection states, not grades such as “fast” and “slow.” A phone can detect either state without that detection supplying a guaranteed throughput figure. The only way to learn the delivered rate is to measure the active mobile connection.
Use the phone’s network-status screen when the icon is missing
There is no single settings path shared by every Android manufacturer. Xiaomi documents this route on its phones:
- Open Settings.
- Tap About phone.
- Open Detailed info and specs.
- Tap Status.
- Choose SIM status.
On Xiaomi software, the 5G icon may be hidden while the phone is connected to Wi‑Fi even though the handset can still use 5G. Xiaomi says HyperOS 2.2 and later displays the icon in that situation. This is a Xiaomi-specific software behavior, not a rule for all Android phones. If your manufacturer uses different labels, search its support documentation for “SIM status,” “mobile network type” or “preferred network type.”
What the different indicators can and cannot tell you
A status icon is a report from the handset’s software about the network state it recognizes. It is useful for confirming that the phone is not merely showing an old assumption about the connection, but it is not a radio-analysis report. The icon does not show the amount of spectrum available, how many other subscribers are using the cell, or the capacity of the network connection behind the cell site.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteCarrier-branded labels also should not be compared as if they were a universal speed scale. Apple documents 5G UC, 5G+, and 5G UW as labels used by particular carriers. Their presence tells you that the carrier has supplied that label for a supported combination of network, model and region. It does not establish that one label will always outperform another, or that the same label represents identical conditions in every market.

Likewise, seeing LTE is not a diagnosis of a broken phone. It can mean that LTE is the network currently reported at that location or moment. If you expected 5G, check the model, carrier, region, selected data line and software behavior before concluding that the service is unavailable.
Prepare a test that measures cellular data, not Wi‑Fi
Before starting, disconnect from Wi‑Fi. Leave cellular data enabled and make sure the intended SIM or data line is selected. A test that remains on Wi‑Fi measures the Wi‑Fi connection to your router and internet service, not the phone’s 5G or other mobile network.
- Turn Wi‑Fi off from Quick Settings or Control Center.
- Confirm the cellular-data indicator is active and the correct SIM is the data line.
- Stay in the place you want to evaluate. Moving between rooms, buildings or streets changes the radio conditions.
- Pause large downloads, cloud backups and video streams that could compete for capacity.
- Note the phone model, network label, location, time and whether you are indoors or outdoors.
Mobile tests use your plan’s cellular data. Check the test app’s data-use controls before running several tests. A test can consume substantially more data than ordinary status checking, so do not assume that installing an app or running repeated tests is free of data-allowance consequences.

Run a cellular speed test
Using the FCC Mobile Speed Test app
The FCC documents a Mobile Speed Test app for iOS and Android. Its tests use the mobile network and count toward the phone plan’s data allowance. The app requests location permission because the result is associated with where the test ran.
- Install and open the FCC Mobile Speed Test app on your iPhone or Android phone.
- Grant the requested location permission if you want the result associated with your test location.
- Confirm Wi‑Fi is off and cellular data is on.
- Review the app’s data-use limit before testing. The FCC documentation describes a 1 GB default limit that the user can adjust; verify the current setting in the app rather than assuming it is unchanged.
- Start the test and wait for it to finish without switching networks or closing the app.
- Record the displayed download, upload and latency values, along with the time, location and network label.
The FCC’s instructions say its coverage-challenge test “must be run on the mobile network, not over Wi‑Fi.” That requirement is essential if you want the result to describe mobile service.
What the result means
Download throughput describes how quickly data arrived during the test, which matters for web pages, app downloads and video delivery. Upload throughput describes how quickly the phone sent data, affecting photo backups, live video and file transfers. Latency, when shown, is the response delay measured by the app. These are observations for that run, not fixed properties of every 5G connection.
There is no universal “good 5G speed” threshold established for every country, plan, device and use. A result should be judged against the task you are trying to perform and against comparable tests on the same setup, rather than against the 5G label alone. A number from one app should also be compared with later readings from that same app when you are looking for a trend; changing apps can change test behavior and make comparisons less direct.
Why a phone can show 5G and still feel slow
A 5G indication and a slow experience are not contradictory. The FCC’s 2024 Communications Marketplace Report identifies several variables that change experienced mobile speed:

- Signal quality: Obstructions, distance from the serving site and indoor construction can weaken the received signal.
- Cell loading: Many users sharing the same cell can reduce the capacity available to each connection.
- Local network capacity: Backhaul and other capacity limits at a particular location can constrain performance even when the phone reports 5G.
- Device capabilities: The handset’s supported bands, radio implementation and other hardware limits affect what it can use.
The time and place of a test therefore matter. A result taken at a quiet outdoor location may differ substantially from one taken indoors during a busy period. Crowdsourced measurements and structured measurements can also produce different pictures because structured tests control factors such as location, time and device.
“Feels slow” can also describe different problems. A low download result points to limited data throughput during the test, while a high delay can make taps and page starts feel sluggish even when the eventual download rate is reasonable. Record both values when the app provides them instead of describing every poor experience simply as “slow 5G.”
What to do when the 5G icon does not appear
Confirm that the icon is actually the right diagnostic
First turn Wi‑Fi off and look again. On Xiaomi phones, Wi‑Fi can suppress the 5G icon in documented software versions, so inspect Settings > About phone > Detailed info and specs > Status > SIM status as well. Other manufacturers may have their own status screen.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Check the active data line
On a dual-SIM phone, verify that the 5G-capable SIM is selected for mobile data. A different line may be handling data while the other line has the compatible service.
Account for model, carrier, region and software
Whether a phone reports 5G depends on the supported model, the carrier’s network, local availability and the phone’s software behavior. The same handset can show different labels in different regions or on different carrier configurations. If it never reports 5G, check the device maker’s and carrier’s compatibility and coverage information for your exact model and account. The available documentation does not diagnose an individual plan, band configuration or provisioning problem.
Do not diagnose from one missing or low result
Repeat the test with Wi‑Fi disabled, then compare another time or nearby location. A single reading can reflect a temporary load spike, a poor indoor signal or another local condition. If repeated tests under comparable conditions remain poor, provide the carrier or manufacturer with the recorded times, locations, network labels and results.
Make tests comparable so the numbers are useful
To check consistency at one location, run several readings without changing the phone, SIM, test app or general position. Keep Wi‑Fi off and cellular data active for every run. Record:
- date and local time;
- exact or approximate location;
- indoors, outdoors or in a vehicle;
- phone model and software version;
- carrier and active data SIM;
- status label shown by the phone;
- download, upload and latency values;
- anything unusual, such as a crowded venue or an active large download.
For changes over time, repeat at similar times and in the same place. Comparing a morning indoor test with an evening outdoor test does not isolate a network change because several conditions changed at once.

For a simple personal log, put each reading on its own line and preserve the original units shown by the app. Mark whether the phone showed 5G, a carrier-specific 5G label or LTE. After several readings, look for a pattern: consistently lower results indoors, a drop during busy periods, or similar results across different labels. This does not prove the cause, but it gives the carrier or manufacturer a clearer description than a single screenshot.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.When an FCC test is a formal coverage challenge
In the United States, the FCC’s Mobile Speed Test app supports a specific process for challenging mobile-broadband coverage maps. That process is narrower than an ordinary personal speed check.
- The challenge test must use cellular data, not Wi‑Fi.
- Testing must be outdoors or in a vehicle.
- The permitted testing window is 6:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. local time.
- The app uses location information and tests consume mobile-data allowance.
- FCC QuickCheck tests do not challenge the coverage map.
An indoor speed test can still help you understand your own service, but it does not meet the stated conditions for a formal FCC coverage challenge. Consult the FCC instructions for the current submission workflow and requirements. The challenge rules are specific to the FCC process in the United States; they are not a universal requirement for ordinary speed testing in other countries.

When a phone upgrade is, and is not, relevant
A missing 5G icon alone is not enough reason to replace a phone. First establish whether the current model is supported by the carrier in the region, whether the correct SIM is carrying data, and whether software is affecting the displayed icon. If the phone is compatible and repeated tests are still slow, the limiting factor may be signal quality, cell loading or local capacity rather than the handset.
Hardware becomes a relevant question only after those checks. Different devices have different capabilities, but a status label still cannot tell you how much performance a replacement would deliver at your location. Compare measured results and the exact compatibility information for the model and carrier before treating new hardware as the solution.
A practical decision path
- Read the label: Check whether the phone shows 5G, a carrier-specific 5G variant, LTE or another status.
- Verify the status screen: If the icon is absent or affected by Wi‑Fi, inspect the manufacturer’s SIM or network-status page.
- Prepare the connection: Turn Wi‑Fi off, enable cellular data and select the correct data SIM.
- Measure: Run a cellular speed test and record download, upload and latency if available.
- Repeat: Take additional readings under similar conditions before deciding that the network or phone is consistently slow.
- Escalate with evidence: If the pattern persists, contact the carrier or device maker with your model, software, location, times, status labels and test results.
The reliable conclusion comes from combining the status report with repeatable measurements. The icon answers whether the phone is reporting a 5G network; only a cellular test shows what that connection delivered at the moment you measured it.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does the 5G icon prove my phone is getting fast internet?
No. It indicates a reported 5G network state. Android explicitly warns that detecting 5G does not establish connection speed or bandwidth. Turn off Wi‑Fi and run a cellular test to measure delivered performance.

Why does 5G disappear when I connect to Wi‑Fi?
On documented Xiaomi software, Wi‑Fi can suppress the 5G icon even while the phone can use 5G. Check Settings > About phone > Detailed info and specs > Status > SIM status. Other manufacturers may behave differently.
How do I test 5G instead of my home Wi‑Fi?
Disable Wi‑Fi, leave cellular data enabled, confirm the intended SIM is selected for mobile data, then run the speed-test app. A test performed over Wi‑Fi does not measure the mobile network.
What do 5G UC, 5G+, and 5G UW mean?
They are carrier-specific 5G labels listed by Apple. Availability depends on the carrier, iPhone model and region. They are not universal speed ratings and do not guarantee identical radio conditions.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Can a dual-SIM phone test the wrong network?
Yes. The line selected for cellular data carries the test. Check Cellular > Cellular Data on an iPhone, or the equivalent mobile-data setting on Android, before measuring.
How many speed tests should I run?
There is no single universal count. Run several readings without changing the phone, app or general position, then repeat at comparable times or locations. A pattern is more useful than one unusually high or low result.
Does an FCC QuickCheck result challenge the coverage map?
No. The FCC distinguishes QuickCheck tests from formal challenge tests. In the United States, a challenge test must use cellular data, run outdoors or in a vehicle, and occur between 6:00 a.m. and 10:00 p.m. local time.
Will a speed test use my mobile-data allowance?
Yes. The FCC Mobile Speed Test app’s tests use mobile data and count toward the plan’s allowance. Review its data-use limit; the FCC documentation describes a user-adjustable 1 GB default setting, which should be verified in the current app.
Is there one speed that counts as “good 5G”?
No universal threshold applies to every country, plan, device and use. Judge the result against the task you need and comparable tests made under similar conditions.
The Bottom Line
A 5G label answers a status question, not a speed question. Check the phone’s network indicator or status screen, turn Wi‑Fi off, confirm the correct cellular-data line, and run several mobile speed tests. Record the conditions so you can tell a temporary result from a consistent problem.
