To check a phone for Mint Mobile, run the exact model or IMEI through Mint’s Bring Your Own Phone checker, then separately confirm that the handset is unlocked and that Mint service covers the places you use it. A phone can pass one of those checks and fail another.
What “compatible” means for Mint Mobile
Mint’s compatibility decision has several independent parts:
- Device and network support: The exact handset must support the network features Mint checks, including 4G LTE, 5G and VoLTE where applicable.
- Carrier-unlock status: A device that is restricted to another carrier cannot normally be brought to Mint until that carrier removes the restriction.
- SIM or eSIM support: You need either a physical SIM slot that works with Mint’s activation process or compatible eSIM support.
- Local coverage: A technically compatible phone does not guarantee a strong signal at your home, workplace or travel destinations.
Mint Mobile’s Help Center summarizes the hardware requirement this way: “Essentially any 5G or 4G LTE-supported phone that accepts a physical SIM card (or supports eSIM) will work on Mint.” That is general guidance, not a substitute for checking your exact model or IMEI.

Mint describes an IMEI search as the option that gives the best results, because it identifies the individual handset rather than relying only on a model name. Start at Mint’s Bring Your Own Phone page.

- Open the Bring Your Own Phone page.
- Choose the quick search by phone provider, brand and model, or select the IMEI option for Mint’s recommended, more precise check.
- Enter the requested information exactly as it appears on the phone. An IMEI is typically 15 to 17 digits according to Mint’s BYOP instructions.
- Read the result for that exact device before ordering a plan or SIM.
| Checker method | What you enter | When to use it | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Brand and model | Phone provider, manufacturer and model | Fast initial screening when you do not have the handset in hand | Closely related models, regional variants and storage versions can differ |
| IMEI | The phone’s 15–17 digit IMEI | Best-results check recommended by Mint | Use the IMEI from the actual phone you plan to activate |
Do not post your IMEI publicly or send it to an unrelated person. It is an identifier to enter into Mint’s checker or provide privately to a carrier when support asks for it.
Find your phone’s IMEI
Use the dialer code
On many phones, open the phone app and dial *#06#. The IMEI should appear on screen. Dual-SIM phones may show more than one IMEI; use the one associated with the SIM slot or eSIM line you intend to activate, and check both if Mint asks for clarification.
Find it in Android settings
Mint lists this general route: Settings > About device > Status. Android manufacturers change menu names and placement, so you may instead see “About phone,” “Device information” or an IMEI entry directly under the About section. If the menu differs, search Settings for “IMEI.”
Find it on an iPhone
Open Settings > General > About and scroll to IMEI. The same page also contains the carrier-lock information described below.
Check the device label or packaging
If the phone will not power on, the IMEI may be printed on the original box, a SIM tray or a label supplied with the device. Confirm that the number belongs to the handset you will actually use; a box from another phone can produce a misleading checker result.
Confirm that the phone is unlocked
Compatibility and unlocking are separate conditions. Mint says a phone must be both compatible and unlocked for bring-your-own-phone activation. A positive checker result therefore does not finish the process.
Check an iPhone
- Open Settings.
- Tap General, then About.
- Find Carrier Lock.
- No SIM restrictions means the iPhone is unlocked. Any wording that names a carrier or indicates a restriction means you need to resolve the lock first.
Check an Android phone
Android does not use one universal menu. Depending on the manufacturer and software version, look under network, mobile-network, SIM or About-phone settings for a carrier or network-lock status. Mint notes that Android steps vary, so an inconclusive menu should not be treated as proof that the phone is unlocked.

Ask the current carrier for a definitive answer
Contact the carrier that sold or financed the phone and ask it to confirm the unlock status for the IMEI. If the phone is locked, ask for its network-unlock procedure and eligibility requirements. This is more reliable than inferring status from the phone’s past SIM card or from whether another SIM happens to connect.
What to do if the phone is locked
A carrier may keep a handset locked because it has not been paid off or because it remains under a contract. Mint also describes “Reseller Flex” retail arrangements in which a phone sold as unlocked can lock to the first network used during activation. Those circumstances mean that paying a balance does not automatically promise an immediate unlock; the original carrier must confirm eligibility and complete its process.
- Identify the carrier that applied the lock, not merely the carrier whose SIM is currently installed.
- Ask that carrier whether the device meets its unlock requirements.
- Complete any required payoff, account, identity or waiting-period steps.
- Request confirmation that the IMEI is unlocked before buying a Mint plan.
- Run the Mint checker again if the carrier supplies a replacement device or changes the handset record.
If the carrier will not unlock the phone, you must keep using it on an allowed network or choose an unlocked replacement. Do not assume that a factory reset, software update or new SIM removes a carrier lock.
Check physical SIM and eSIM options
Mint supports compatible phones with either a physical SIM or eSIM. eSIM is not a workaround for a locked device: Mint says the phone must be unlocked for eSIM activation.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches| Activation route | What the phone needs | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Physical SIM | A compatible, unlocked phone with a working physical SIM slot | Use Mint’s compatibility result for the exact model or IMEI |
| eSIM | A compatible, unlocked phone with eSIM hardware and software support | Use Mint’s separate eSIM checker for an eSIM-specific answer |
If your phone cannot use eSIM, that does not automatically disqualify it. Mint’s Help Center says a compatible phone that uses a physical SIM can still be activated. Conversely, an eSIM-capable phone can still fail if it is locked or incompatible with Mint’s network requirements.
Look for 4G LTE, 5G and VoLTE support
Mint’s BYOP information says its checker tests whether a phone is friendly to 5G, 4G LTE and VoLTE. These checks matter because a generic label such as “GSM phone” does not identify the bands, software support or voice technology needed by a particular handset.
- 4G LTE: The phone needs compatible LTE support for ordinary data service.
- 5G: A 5G label alone is not enough; the exact model and regional version must pass Mint’s checker.
- VoLTE: Voice-over-LTE support is part of Mint’s compatibility assessment and should not be inferred from the phone’s age or carrier history.
Do not rely on a model name copied from a listing if the phone was imported, sold for another region or modified by a carrier. Enter the handset’s IMEI whenever possible so Mint can evaluate the specific unit.

Use the previous carrier only as a clue
Mint says unlocked phones previously used with AT&T, Verizon, T-Mobile, Cricket Wireless, Simple Mobile or Straight Talk will probably work, and that most unlocked phones designed for GSM networks are likely BYOP candidates. “Probably” is important: this is a probability, not a guarantee for every model or regional variant.
Recommended Free Tools
| Previous phone situation | What it tells you | What it does not prove |
|---|---|---|
| Unlocked phone from one of the carriers Mint lists | The device may be a good candidate | That the exact IMEI passes Mint’s compatibility check |
| Unlocked GSM-network phone | It may have a suitable network design | That it supports every required LTE, 5G or VoLTE feature |
| Phone that currently accepts another carrier’s SIM | It may be unlocked, depending on the test and carrier | That Mint coverage or all network features will work |
| Phone sold as “unlocked” by a retailer | It may have been intended for multiple networks | That a Reseller Flex lock was not triggered during activation |
Use the history to decide which check to run, then rely on Mint’s result and the carrier’s unlock confirmation rather than the old carrier name.
Check Mint coverage separately
Device compatibility says whether the handset can use Mint’s network; it does not predict the signal inside your house or at a particular address. Mint recommends checking its coverage map for the places where you actually need service.
- Open Mint’s coverage map from its service information.
- Inspect your home, workplace, school and regular travel routes rather than checking only a city name.
- Consider indoor locations, rural stretches and destinations where you need calls or data.
- Treat the map as an estimate. Mint notes that terrain, buildings, weather and other conditions can change real-world service.
Coverage and compatibility should be treated as two separate yes-or-no gates: a compatible phone may have weak service in a particular location, while a strong local signal cannot make an incompatible phone work.
Compare keeping your phone with replacing it
Once you have the checker result, unlock answer and coverage information, the decision is straightforward. Keeping the current handset avoids moving your data and settings to a new device, but only makes sense when the exact phone qualifies and the carrier can unlock it. Replacing the handset is the alternative when the model fails Mint’s check or the original carrier will not remove its lock.
| Question | Keep the current phone | Choose an unlocked replacement |
|---|---|---|
| Mint device result | Must pass by model or, preferably, IMEI | Verify the exact replacement model or IMEI before buying |
| Unlock status | Already unlocked or eligible for the prior carrier’s process | Confirm the unit is unlocked, not merely advertised that way |
| SIM choice | Use physical SIM or eSIM supported by that handset | Choose a model with the SIM type you intend to activate |
| Service expectations | Check Mint coverage at your locations | Coverage still needs a separate check; a new phone does not change the map |
For a third-party or manufacturer phone, retain the model and IMEI information until activation is complete. A listing can describe a family of phones while the delivered unit is a different regional variant. If the seller’s return policy matters to your decision, review it before ordering rather than assuming every version is interchangeable.

- Identify the handset: Record the model and IMEI from the phone you intend to activate.
- Run Mint’s checker: Use the model search for a quick answer, then use the IMEI search for Mint’s best-results check.
- Confirm network features: Make sure the result covers the phone’s 4G LTE, 5G and VoLTE capability as applicable.
- Confirm unlock status: Check iPhone Carrier Lock, inspect Android network settings where available, and ask the current carrier if anything is unclear.
- Choose a SIM path: Select physical SIM if the phone has a compatible slot; select eSIM only if Mint’s eSIM check passes and the device is unlocked.
- Check local coverage: Examine the locations where you need service and account for buildings, terrain and weather.
- Activate only after all checks pass: Keep the current service active until you know the Mint activation succeeds if uninterrupted connectivity is important.
Common mistakes that produce a wrong answer
- Checking only the brand: Two phones with the same marketing name can have different regional hardware. Use the IMEI for the handset you will activate.
- Confusing unlocked with compatible: An unlocked phone can still lack required LTE, 5G or VoLTE support.
- Confusing a working SIM with an unlocked device: A phone may connect to its original carrier while remaining restricted to that carrier.
- Assuming eSIM bypasses a lock: Mint requires an unlocked device for eSIM activation.
- Checking coverage only after switching: A pass result does not predict indoor or rural performance at your actual locations.
- Entering the wrong IMEI: Packaging, a second SIM slot or a replacement handset can show a different identifier. Match the number to the device and line you intend to use.
How to troubleshoot a failed or unclear result
The model search says incompatible, but the phone seems modern
Check the exact regional and carrier variant, then submit the IMEI. Different versions sold under nearly identical names can have different network support. If the IMEI still fails, treat Mint’s result as the decision for that handset rather than assuming its age or 5G branding makes it suitable.
The phone passes, but activation reports a lock
Return to the carrier that sold or financed the device and request an unlock-status check for the IMEI. A successful compatibility result does not override a carrier restriction. After the carrier confirms the unlock, retry activation.

The phone supports eSIM but Mint will not activate it
Run Mint’s eSIM-specific check and verify that the phone is unlocked. If eSIM is unsupported for that handset, use a physical SIM when Mint’s main compatibility result says the device qualifies.
The phone passes the checker but service is poor
Review the coverage map at the exact problem location. Building materials, terrain, weather and other local conditions can affect service even when the phone and network are technically compatible.
You cannot obtain a usable IMEI
Try *#06#, the Android About-device or iPhone About menu, the SIM tray, or the original packaging. If the numbers do not match the handset, stop and verify the device identity before proceeding.
When replacing the phone makes sense
If the current handset fails Mint’s compatibility or unlock checks, Mint says you can consider an unlocked phone from a third-party seller or manufacturer. Verify the exact replacement model or IMEI with Mint before purchase, and confirm that the seller’s “unlocked” claim applies to the unit you will receive.
- Prefer a phone that supports 4G LTE and, if desired, 5G and VoLTE according to Mint’s checker.
- Decide whether you need a physical SIM, eSIM or both.
- Check the return policy in case the delivered regional variant differs from the advertised model.
- Do not treat a product description, carrier history or “GSM” label as a replacement for Mint’s exact-device check.
The practical rule is simple: keep the phone when it passes the device check, is confirmed unlocked and has acceptable coverage where you use it. Replace it only when one of those gates cannot be satisfied.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I bring my current phone to Mint Mobile?
Usually, if Mint’s BYOP checker approves the exact model or IMEI, the phone is unlocked, and it supports a physical SIM or compatible eSIM. Run the checker rather than relying only on the phone’s brand or previous carrier.
How do I find the IMEI Mint needs?
Dial *#06#, or look in Android Settings under About device or on an iPhone at Settings > General > About. Mint describes an IMEI as 15 to 17 digits. Use the identifier from the actual handset you plan to activate.
Does an unlocked AT&T, Verizon or T-Mobile phone work on Mint?
Mint says unlocked phones previously used with AT&T, Verizon, T-Mobile, Cricket Wireless, Simple Mobile or Straight Talk will probably work. That is only a likelihood; confirm the exact IMEI with Mint’s checker.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Can I use Mint eSIM if my phone is locked?
No. Mint says eSIM activation requires a compatible, unlocked phone. If eSIM is unavailable but the phone passes the main check and has a physical SIM slot, physical-SIM activation may still work.
What if Mint says my phone is compatible but the signal is weak?
Compatibility and coverage are different questions. Check Mint’s coverage map at your home, workplace and travel destinations, and remember that buildings, terrain, weather and other conditions can affect actual service.
Will paying off my phone automatically unlock it?
Not necessarily. Mint notes that unpaid balances, contracts and certain Reseller Flex arrangements can create locks. Ask the original carrier about eligibility and obtain confirmation that the IMEI is unlocked.
The Bottom Line
Run Mint’s BYOP check with your phone’s IMEI, confirm the device is unlocked, choose physical SIM or eSIM based on the handset’s support, and inspect coverage where you actually use service. Only after all four checks pass should you move your line to Mint.
