There is no symptom checklist that can prove a phone is free of sophisticated commercial spyware. Ordinary battery drain, heat, crashes or unfamiliar behavior are not reliable evidence. A genuine Apple threat notification is a high-confidence warning for a targeted person; forensic analysis such as Amnesty International’s Mobile Verification Toolkit (MVT) can find traces linked to known campaigns, but a scan can miss spyware and any hit needs expert interpretation.
The right approach depends on your risk. Verify platform alerts through official account pages, apply safeguards that reduce exposure, and obtain specialist help instead of treating a consumer scan as a certificate that the phone is clean.
What a phone check can—and cannot—tell you
Commercial spyware is generally deployed for targeted surveillance rather than broad, random infection. The people most likely to face this threat include journalists, activists, human-rights defenders, political figures and others with a specific reason to believe they are being watched. That does not make an ordinary user’s concern invalid; it does mean the useful test is determined by the threat model, the device data available for examination and the quality of the indicators being used.
A normal settings review or security app cannot rule out an advanced, targeted attack. Sophisticated spyware may leave no obvious visible symptom, and the evidence needed to identify it may not be present in routine user-accessible data. Conversely, a suspicious event such as a hot phone or a sudden battery change can have many harmless explanations. Treat symptoms as a reason to investigate, not as a diagnosis.

Apple describes its mercenary-spyware notifications as high-confidence alerts based on internal threat intelligence and investigations. Apple also says its investigations can never achieve absolute certainty. Since 2021, Apple says it has notified users in more than 150 countries; that is the number of countries in which notifications were issued, not a count of victims, infections or current cases. Read the current guidance at Apple’s threat-notification support page.
Start with your threat model
Before changing anything, decide what you are trying to establish and what could be lost by an improvised response. A person facing a credible, individualised threat should avoid actions that overwrite evidence, alert an attacker or lock investigators out of the device.
Questions that change the response
- Have you received an official platform warning, or only noticed general performance changes?
- Are you a journalist, activist, human-rights defender, political figure or civil-society worker whose work could motivate targeted surveillance?
- Is the phone personally owned, employer-managed or supplied by a government or other organisation?
- Would a factory reset, app removal or password change destroy information an investigator might need?
- Do you have a safe, separate device for contacting a security specialist?
If the risk is specific and consequential, contact a qualified responder before attempting a reset or deleting apps. An employer-managed or government device should also be escalated through its authorised security liaison, because local forensic and evidence-handling rules may apply.
If an Apple threat notification appears
An Apple threat notification is not an ordinary pop-up or a marketing message. Apple says the alert is a high-confidence indication that an individual account or device has been targeted by mercenary spyware. It may appear on the iPhone, arrive at the email address associated with the Apple Account and appear at the top of the account page. The exact presentation can vary with the device model and software version.

Verify the alert without trusting the message
- Open a browser yourself and type account.apple.com rather than tapping a link in an email, text or notification.
- Sign in and look at the top of the account page for the threat notification.
- Compare the account-page notice with the message you received. If it is absent, treat the message as unverified and contact Apple through an official support route.
- Do not open an attachment, install an app or configuration profile, or disclose a password or verification code in response to an alert message. Apple says it will never request those actions by email or phone.
- Save the notification details for a responder, including the date, device, account and any instructions shown. Avoid editing or deleting related messages until you have received advice.
Apple recommends that notified users contact Access Now’s Digital Security Helpline for assistance. A real alert warrants serious action even though Apple does not claim mathematical certainty; the absence of an alert is not evidence that no compromise occurred.
Apply Apple’s immediate protections
- Update the operating system. Install available security updates through the normal Apple update mechanism. Keeping software current removes known vulnerabilities, although it cannot undo a compromise that has already happened.
- Consider Lockdown Mode. Apple describes this as optional extreme protection for people facing highly sophisticated, targeted attacks. It reduces the attack surface by restricting some apps, websites and features, so review the trade-offs before enabling it. Details and supported-device information are in Apple’s Lockdown Mode security guide.
- Review App Privacy Report. Amnesty International recommends this review for iPhone users at heightened risk. It can show how apps use permissions and contact network domains, helping identify ordinary privacy problems; it is not a forensic finding that spyware is absent.
Do not assume that enabling Lockdown Mode or installing an update proves that the phone is clean. These measures reduce future exposure while a qualified person determines whether a deeper examination is needed.
Android checks: useful prevention, not proof of cleanliness
Android’s built-in checks can close common entry routes and reveal routine browser or account problems, but they do not provide a forensic verdict on advanced commercial spyware.

Disable installation from unknown sources
Amnesty International recommends disabling the ability to install apps from unknown sources. Android labels and menus vary by manufacturer and version, so use Settings search for terms such as Install unknown apps or Unknown sources, then turn the permission off for browsers, file managers and any other app that does not need it. This prevents a common class of sideloading, but it does not detect spyware delivered through an exploit, a compromised account or a legitimate application.

Run Chrome Safety Check
Open Chrome’s Safety Check feature and address warnings about browser updates, saved passwords, Safe Browsing or account security. Safety Check is designed for common browser and account hygiene. It does not inspect the phone’s full forensic record and cannot certify that commercial spyware is absent.
Keep Android and apps current
Install operating-system and application updates from the device’s normal update channels. Updates reduce exposure to known vulnerabilities, but a current version should not be presented as evidence that a targeted attack never occurred.

Forensic analysis with the Mobile Verification Toolkit
The Mobile Verification Toolkit (MVT) is an open-source, command-line toolkit developed by Amnesty International Security Lab for consensual forensic analysis of Android and iOS devices. It examines data that can be extracted or backed up and compares that data with indicators associated with known spyware campaigns. The project’s installation and analysis instructions are maintained at the MVT documentation.

What an MVT examination involves
- Obtain informed consent. Analyse only a device you own or have explicit permission to examine. If the phone belongs to an employer or another organisation, follow its authorised process.
- Prepare a safe analysis environment. Use a trusted computer, protect extracted data from unauthorised access and record who handled the device. A specialist can advise on evidence preservation before collection.
- Install the toolkit from its documentation. MVT is technical software, not a one-tap mobile app. Follow the documentation for your operating system and toolkit version rather than copying commands from an unrelated guide.
- Collect the records MVT can access. On iOS, an encrypted computer backup can contain a useful subset of device data. Android diagnostic data is more limited. These are extraction limits, not proof that Android cannot be investigated.
- Run the analysis against available indicators. The toolkit searches accessible records for traces associated with indicators known to its maintainers. Keep the original outputs and note the device, operating-system version, collection date and indicator set used.
- Have a qualified person interpret the result. A finding needs context, correlation and current threat intelligence. Do not publish or confront someone based only on an unreviewed line in a report.
Why MVT is not an all-clear button
An indicator-of-compromise scan can inspect only the data it receives and the indicators available to it. Public indicators may lag behind current campaigns or omit intelligence that is not publicly released. A recent attack may leave no accessible trace, while an old artifact or an unrelated file can produce a false positive. Therefore, a negative MVT result means that the examined data did not match the supplied indicators; it does not prove that the phone has never been compromised or is currently clean.
Privacy Guides explains these limitations in its device-integrity overview. Meaningful triage can require non-public indicators, specialist research and knowledge of the target’s circumstances. If the stakes are high, specialist analysis is more valuable than running the same public scan repeatedly.
Compare the available approaches
| Approach | What it examines | What a result can support | Skill and limits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Apple threat notification | Apple’s internal threat intelligence and investigation of a particular account or device | A high-confidence indication of targeted mercenary-spyware activity when the notice is genuine and verified at the account page | Only Apple can explain the underlying evidence; no notification does not prove absence |
| Settings and account hygiene | Security updates, app permissions, unknown-source installation and browser/account warnings | Reduced attack surface and discovery of common configuration problems | Low technical burden, but no forensic spyware verdict |
| MVT forensic analysis | Accessible Android or iOS records compared with known campaign indicators | Possible traces that merit investigation | Command-line work, platform extraction limits, incomplete indicators and possible false positives |
| Specialist triage | Device evidence plus contextual and, where available, non-public threat intelligence | A defensible assessment of suspicious artifacts and the next response step | Requires an appropriate responder; availability and scope depend on the case |
How to interpret a result
If the result is negative
A clean-looking settings review or a scan with no matches narrows what was found; it does not certify the device. Record which device data and indicators were examined, because a later specialist needs to know what the test actually covered. Continue software updates and risk-reduction measures while deciding whether the threat justifies expert review.
If the result contains a suspicious artifact
Do not call it a confirmed infection automatically. Preserve the report and the underlying data, avoid deleting the named file or resetting the phone, and ask a qualified responder to determine whether the artifact is current, stale, unrelated or a false positive. Taking the phone offline, changing accounts or removing an app may be sensible in some cases, but the right order depends on whether preserving evidence or stopping ongoing access is more urgent.

If Apple confirms a notification
Use the account-page notice as the anchor for escalation. Contact the Digital Security Helpline or another specialist, explain what devices and accounts are involved, and follow their instructions for updates, Lockdown Mode, account protection and evidence handling. Do not rely on a generic antivirus claim or a retail cable as a substitute for forensic analysis; neither is established as a detector for commercial spyware.
When to seek specialist help
Escalate promptly when any of these conditions apply:
- An Apple threat notification appears and is verified at account.apple.com.
- Your work, identity or location gives you a credible reason to expect individualised surveillance.
- MVT or another technical examination produces a suspicious match.
- The phone contains sensitive sources, client information, evidence or human-rights documentation.
- The device is managed by an employer, government body or other organisation with an incident-response process.
- You cannot preserve the device safely or do not understand what an extraction tool will change.
Apple directs notified users to Access Now’s Digital Security Helpline. Amnesty International Security Lab supports journalists, activists and civil-society organisations facing targeted digital attacks. These organisations provide safety referrals; contact them through the official pages rather than through links in an unsolicited message.
Mistakes that create false confidence
- Diagnosing from symptoms. Heat, battery drain, crashes and slow performance have many causes and do not identify commercial spyware.
- Trusting a notification link. Verify through the account page you open yourself. Never provide a password or verification code because a message requests it.
- Calling a public scan definitive. Public indicators are incomplete, accessible data is limited and artifacts need interpretation.
- Resetting before preserving evidence. A factory reset or app deletion can remove information an investigator needs and may not answer how the compromise occurred.
- Confusing prevention with detection. Lockdown Mode, updates, unknown-source restrictions and Chrome Safety Check reduce exposure or catch common issues; they are not proof of a clean phone.
- Assuming no alert means no attack. Apple’s alert is a high-confidence signal when issued, not a comprehensive sensor for every compromise.
- Using the wrong tool for the claim. A security key protects account sign-in, and a cable enables a connection; neither inspects a phone for spyware. General cleanup software should not be presented as forensic detection without evidence of that capability.
A practical decision path
- No specific warning and no high-risk context: install updates, review account security, disable unnecessary unknown-source installation on Android, and use normal privacy checks. Do not diagnose spyware from ordinary symptoms.
- Specific high-risk context but no Apple alert: apply protective settings, avoid amateur certainty claims and arrange specialist advice. The absence of an alert does not settle the question.
- Verified Apple notification: preserve the notice, enable appropriate protections such as Lockdown Mode after considering feature restrictions, and contact a specialist immediately.
- Suspicious MVT output: preserve the report and device state, stop making changes that could erase evidence, and obtain interpretation from someone with current threat intelligence.
- Managed or legally sensitive device: use the organisation’s authorised security and evidence-handling process before running tools or resetting hardware.
The most responsible conclusion is therefore conditional: Apple’s verified notification is a strong targeted-risk signal; MVT can reveal traces tied to known campaigns; platform hygiene lowers exposure; and no consumer check can guarantee that an advanced commercial-spyware infection is absent.
