Check three things: the Windows release and edition installed, whether that release is still in its servicing period, and whether your hardware has a supported upgrade path. A Windows 10 PC can keep working after support ends, but it will not receive the normal free security fixes unless it is upgraded to a supported Windows 11 release or enrolled in the applicable consumer Extended Security Updates (ESU) program. A PC that passes Windows 11 hardware checks may still wait for Microsoft to offer the upgrade.

The most reliable answer comes from the exact version on the computer, not from its age, speed, or the fact that Windows still starts. Support status, hardware eligibility, upgrade availability, and ESU enrollment are separate questions. Check them in that order, save the results, and back up important data before changing the operating system or firmware.

Start with the Windows release and edition

Hardware age, speed, and apparent condition do not show whether security updates are still available. Support is tied to the specific Windows release and edition installed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Find the installed version

  1. Press Windows + R, type winver, and press Enter. Record the Windows name, version, and OS build shown.
  2. Open Start > Settings > System > About. Record the Edition (such as Home, Pro, Enterprise, or Education), the system type, and the processor details.
  3. In Settings, open Windows Update and note whether Windows reports that the device is up to date, at the end of service, or not eligible for an offered upgrade.

Use those exact details when checking Microsoft’s lifecycle information. “Windows 11” is not one perpetual support period: servicing dates differ by release and edition. Microsoft’s servicing documentation and release notices show, for example, that Windows 11 version 23H2 has different end dates for Home/Pro and for Enterprise, Education, Enterprise N, and IoT Enterprise editions. Do not apply one edition’s date to another; check the release currently shown by winver. See Microsoft’s current Windows servicing notice at the Windows 11 release information page.

Write down the build as well as the marketing name. Two computers can both say Windows 11 while running different releases, and the one that is out of service may need a feature update even though Windows 11 itself remains a supported platform. Likewise, an Enterprise or Education installation may follow a different date from a Home or Pro installation on otherwise similar hardware.

What Windows 10’s end of support means

Microsoft states that general Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. After that date, a general Windows 10 installation continues to start and run, but Microsoft no longer provides the normal free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, or security fixes for that supported period. An unsupported system is therefore more exposed as newly discovered vulnerabilities are addressed only for supported products. Read Microsoft’s notice at Windows 10 support has ended.

“Will my Windows 10 computer stop working?” is therefore the wrong test. It may continue to open programs and access files, but normal operation is not evidence that newly discovered security problems will be fixed. A current browser or antivirus application cannot turn an out-of-support Windows release into a supported one. The operating-system support state must be checked separately.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

This date does not answer every Windows 10 question by itself. A device enrolled in the consumer ESU program can receive qualifying security updates for a limited period. Microsoft currently says consumer ESU can protect enrolled Windows 10 devices through October 12, 2027. ESU is not a restoration of full Windows 10 support: it is a time-limited security-update option, with its own enrollment terms and eligibility. Check the current program details at Microsoft’s Windows 10 ESU page.

Do not describe ESU as a permanent extension or as the same service a supported Windows installation receives. It is a bridge for an eligible enrolled device. Confirm the current terms on Microsoft’s page when you make the decision, and note the stated end date in your records so the temporary path does not become an unnoticed deadline.

Check whether this PC can run Windows 11

Use Microsoft’s own assessment rather than judging one component in isolation. Windows 11’s published minimums include all of the following:

Requirement Microsoft minimum What to understand
Processor Approved processor running at 1 GHz or faster, with at least two cores The speed and core count alone are not enough; the processor must also be on Microsoft’s approved list.
Memory 4 GB RAM This is a floor for installation, not a guarantee of good performance with every workload.
Storage 64 GB Updates, applications, recovery data, and personal files require additional space.
Firmware UEFI firmware with Secure Boot capability Capability and configuration both matter; a legacy-boot installation may need separate preparation.
Security chip TPM 2.0 A TPM module by itself does not establish eligibility; the other requirements must also pass.
Graphics DirectX 12-compatible graphics with a WDDM 2.0 driver The installed driver and graphics support are part of the assessment.
Display More than 9 inches, with 720p HD resolution or higher Individual Windows 11 features, applications, and accessories may require more.

These are minimum requirements from Microsoft’s Windows 11 system requirements. They are not a promise that Windows Update will offer the upgrade immediately, and they do not guarantee that every Windows 11 feature will work on minimum hardware.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Pay attention to the word approved. A processor can meet the listed clock speed and core count yet fail Microsoft’s supported-processor rule. Similarly, a computer may contain a TPM but have it disabled in firmware, use a boot configuration that does not meet the requirement, or fail another part of the assessment. The complete device result is more useful than a checklist assembled from a single specification page.

Run PC Health Check

PC Health Check is the clearest consumer check because it evaluates the device as a whole and explains a failure rather than merely reporting one specification.

  1. Search Windows for PC Health Check and open the app.
  2. Find the Windows 11 eligibility section and select Check now.
  3. Read the result and expand any explanation of an unmet requirement. Record the exact component or setting named.
  4. If the app is missing, use Microsoft’s PC Health Check instructions, which include the official download route.

Save a screenshot or write down the result, especially if you are comparing repair costs with replacement. “Eligible” means the hardware meets Microsoft’s assessment; it does not mean the upgrade has already been scheduled. “Not currently eligible” should be read with the listed reasons, because there may be several.

Do not treat a result such as “TPM not found” as proof that buying a TPM will solve the problem. The processor, firmware mode, Secure Boot capability, memory, storage, graphics, display, and approved-device rules still apply. Check the complete result before changing hardware or firmware.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Firmware changes deserve care. Changing boot settings can affect how Windows starts and can trigger an encryption-recovery request. Before changing a setting, make sure you have a separate backup and any BitLocker recovery information. If the computer is managed by an employer or school, ask the administrator instead of changing firmware or policy settings yourself.

Check whether Windows Update is actually offering the upgrade

Eligibility and availability are separate checks. A compatible computer may not receive an offer immediately because Microsoft stages the rollout or places a temporary compatibility safeguard hold on a device.

  1. On an unmanaged consumer PC, open Start > Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update.
  2. Select Check for updates.
  3. Read the entire page. An explicit Windows 11 upgrade offer, an eligibility message, and a statement that the device is up to date are different outcomes.

Microsoft’s upgrade FAQ explains this distinction at Upgrade to Windows 11: FAQ. If the computer belongs to an employer or school, policies can control feature updates and the upgrade offer. Ask the IT administrator rather than changing managed settings.

A safeguard hold is not the same as a failed hardware test. It can temporarily delay an offer while Microsoft addresses a compatibility issue. Avoid forcing an installation simply because the Health Check result is positive; first determine whether Windows Update is withholding the offer and whether your organization controls updates.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If you recently changed hardware

After replacing a motherboard, processor, storage device, or other relevant component, PC Health Check and Windows Update may still show the previous assessment. Microsoft says the eligibility assessment can take up to 24 hours to refresh.

  1. Finish the hardware installation and confirm that Windows starts normally.
  2. Install current device drivers and run Windows Update.
  3. Restart the computer, then run PC Health Check again.
  4. Allow up to 24 hours for Microsoft’s assessment to refresh before concluding that the new hardware is not recognized.

Microsoft also cautions that changing a device to supported hardware does not necessarily make Windows 11 appear immediately. The hardware-change guidance is at Check requirements after changing device hardware. If the app passes but Windows Update still has no offer after the refresh period, a staged rollout or safeguard hold may be the reason.

Do not use the 24-hour interval as a guarantee that an offer will arrive. It is the possible refresh time for the assessment after a hardware change. Eligibility can be updated while availability remains separately controlled by rollout and compatibility checks.

Choose a supported path from the result

Path Security-fix outcome What you keep What it requires
Upgrade the current PC to Windows 11 Moves the device to a supported Windows 11 release, subject to that release’s edition-specific lifecycle. The existing computer and, when the upgrade is performed normally, its installed environment. All Windows 11 requirements must pass, the offer must be available, and compatibility holds must not block it.
Enroll in consumer Windows 10 ESU Adds time-limited security updates through October 12, 2027 under Microsoft’s current guidance; it is not full Windows 10 support. The existing Windows 10 PC. Applicable consumer enrollment terms and an eligible installation. Verify the current terms before enrolling.
Move to a Windows 11-capable PC Provides a supported Windows installation when the old device cannot qualify or replacement is preferred. Your data, after you back it up and migrate it; not the old hardware itself. A new device and a plan to transfer files, applications, accounts, and accessibility settings.

These are transition choices, not interchangeable labels. A Windows 10 computer does not become supported merely because it is fast, recently repaired, or fitted with one new component. Conversely, passing PC Health Check does not mean you must upgrade immediately; it means the device has a possible supported route once Windows offers it and your edition’s servicing period is confirmed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Compare the choices on four practical questions: Will security fixes continue? How long does the route last? Can you keep the current computer? Does it require enrollment or a new purchase? An upgrade keeps the existing hardware but depends on eligibility, rollout, and the lifecycle of the resulting Windows 11 release. ESU keeps the current hardware and Windows 10 installation but is temporary. Replacement avoids an ineligible device’s hardware limits but requires migration work and a new PC.

There is no general basis for assuming that adding a TPM, changing one component, or buying a faster drive alone will qualify an otherwise unsupported computer. Microsoft evaluates the complete set of requirements. If replacement is the practical choice, select a device that is explicitly Windows 11-capable rather than relying on one advertised component.

Back up before upgrading or replacing the PC

Before an operating-system upgrade, firmware change, or migration, make a separate copy of documents, photos, browser data, password-manager recovery information, license keys, and any files stored outside your normal sync service. Confirm that the backup opens from another device or recovery environment. Keep the old computer available until you have verified that the replacement or upgraded installation contains the files and applications you need.

  • Record the Microsoft account used for Windows and any local administrator credentials.
  • Export application-specific data that is not automatically synchronized.
  • Save BitLocker recovery information if device encryption is enabled.
  • Make sure the backup is not only on the same internal drive that could fail during the change.

Also list printers, accessibility tools, specialist applications, and browser extensions that must be restored. A normal in-place upgrade is intended to preserve the installed environment, but a replacement requires a deliberate transfer of files, accounts, licenses, and settings. Do not wipe the old device until sign-in, documents, and essential applications have all been verified.

Verify that updates are still arriving after the decision

After upgrading to Windows 11, or after enrolling in ESU, open Settings > Windows Update and select Check for updates. Review Update history for successful cumulative updates, then run winver again to record the release and build. A current “up to date” message is a snapshot, not a lifetime guarantee; repeat the version-and-edition check when Windows moves to a new release.

Keep the release, edition, build, and date of your last successful update together. That record makes an end-of-service notice easier to diagnose and helps distinguish a temporary update failure from a release that has reached its servicing limit. If Windows reports that the device has reached the end of service, identify the release and edition before trying random fixes. The remedy is normally a supported feature update, an eligible ESU enrollment, or replacement—not simply reinstalling the same out-of-support release.

Common results and what they mean

“This PC doesn’t currently meet Windows 11 requirements”

Use the explanation in PC Health Check to identify the failing requirement. If more than one item is listed, address the complete set; satisfying one item does not make the computer eligible. Confirm firmware settings and data safety before making changes, because firmware changes can affect boot configuration and encryption recovery.

PC Health Check passes, but no upgrade appears

Wait for staged availability, check Windows Update again, and look for a compatibility safeguard message. If hardware was recently changed, allow the assessment refresh period. On a managed device, ask IT whether policy controls the offer.

The PC runs Windows 10 normally, so is it safe?

Normal operation only means the installed software still runs. It does not indicate that security fixes continue. Check the support date, the Windows release and edition, and whether the device is enrolled in a currently applicable ESU program.

Windows 11 is installed, but updates stop

Run winver, note the edition and release, and compare them with Microsoft’s servicing information. Windows 11 releases have different lifecycles, so an end-of-service message can require a feature update even though the computer remains eligible for Windows 11 generally.

Windows Update says “up to date,” but the release is old

“Up to date” describes the updates Windows currently offers that installation; it is not a promise that the release is supported forever. Compare the recorded release and edition with Microsoft’s lifecycle information and look for an end-of-service message or feature-update offer.

A work or school PC shows different choices

Managed devices can have policies that control feature updates and upgrade offers. Do not bypass those controls or alter organizational settings. Give the administrator the exact winver result and the PC Health Check outcome so the organization can determine the supported path.

Questions readers commonly ask

Does a Windows 10 PC stop working on October 14, 2025?

No. Microsoft says Windows 10 continues to function, but general support and the normal free security fixes ended on that date. Check ESU, upgrade eligibility, or replacement instead of assuming continued operation means continued protection.

How do I know whether my device qualifies for Windows 11?

Run Microsoft’s PC Health Check, select Check now, and read the explanation for every unmet requirement. Then check Windows Update separately for an actual offer.

Why does PC Health Check say eligible while Windows Update offers nothing?

Microsoft stages upgrades and may place a compatibility safeguard hold on a device. A hardware change can also leave the assessment waiting for a refresh of up to 24 hours. Eligibility is not the same as immediate availability.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is Windows 10 ESU the same as normal support?

No. Consumer ESU is a time-limited security-update option for enrolled eligible devices. Microsoft’s current guidance says it can protect a Windows 10 device through October 12, 2027; it does not restore full Windows 10 support.

Does adding TPM 2.0 guarantee Windows 11 support?

No. Windows 11 also requires an approved processor, UEFI firmware with Secure Boot capability, memory, storage, graphics and driver support, and a suitable display. PC Health Check evaluates the whole device.

Should I force Windows 11 onto an unsupported PC?

The supported workflow is to use Microsoft’s eligibility assessment and Windows Update offer. If the device fails requirements, choose an applicable ESU path or a Windows 11-capable replacement rather than treating one component change as proof of support.

How often should I check support status?

Recheck after a feature update, hardware change, or end-of-service message. Keep the release and edition from winver and compare them with Microsoft’s current lifecycle information, because Windows 11 servicing dates vary by release and edition.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A repeatable support check

  1. Record the Windows release, build, and edition with winver and Settings.
  2. Compare that exact release and edition with Microsoft’s lifecycle information.
  3. If using Windows 10, run PC Health Check before deciding whether an upgrade is possible.
  4. Check Windows Update separately for an actual offer or a safeguard notice.
  5. After hardware changes, allow the assessment to refresh for up to 24 hours.
  6. Back up your files, then choose an eligible Windows 11 upgrade, consumer ESU enrollment, or a Windows 11-capable replacement.
  7. Recheck the release and Update history periodically so an end-of-service notice does not go unnoticed.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will my Windows 10 computer stop working after support ends?

No. It can continue to run, but general Windows 10 support and the normal free security fixes ended October 14, 2025. Check Windows 11 eligibility or current consumer ESU terms.

Why is my PC Health Check result different from Windows Update?

PC Health Check measures eligibility. Windows Update controls availability, which can be delayed by staged rollout, a compatibility safeguard hold, management policy, or a hardware assessment that has not refreshed yet.

How long can a hardware-change assessment take?

Microsoft says eligibility information may take up to 24 hours to refresh after supported hardware is installed.

Does Windows 11 have one support end date?

No. Servicing dates vary by Windows 11 release and edition. Use the exact version and edition shown by winver when checking Microsoft’s lifecycle information.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I buy a TPM to make my computer eligible?

Not necessarily. TPM 2.0 is only one requirement; the approved processor, firmware, Secure Boot capability, memory, storage, graphics, driver, and display requirements also matter.

What are my choices if the PC fails Windows 11 requirements?

You can check whether consumer Windows 10 ESU applies, keep the device only for a limited supported period if enrolled, or move to a Windows 11-capable PC. Back up data before any change.

The Bottom Line

Use winver and Settings to identify the exact Windows release and edition, compare it with Microsoft’s lifecycle information, then run PC Health Check and inspect Windows Update separately. Windows 10 general support ended October 14, 2025; consumer ESU is a limited option currently stated to run through October 12, 2027. If the current PC is eligible and an offer is available, upgrade after backing up. Otherwise, verify ESU eligibility or plan a Windows 11-capable replacement.
