Compare your Windows PC’s operating system, processor, memory, graphics card and storage with Rockstar Games’ current published requirements for the Windows version of Red Dead Redemption 2 (RDR2). If every component meets the minimum tier, your PC meets Rockstar’s listed minimum; that does not guarantee a particular resolution, graphics setting or frame rate. If a component is below the minimum, unlisted or difficult to match—especially a laptop or integrated graphics chip—don’t treat the game as a confirmed fit.
This guide shows how to find each specification in Windows, how to compare it, and what the result does and does not tell you. Rockstar Games Customer Support’s requirements article was last updated April 30, 2024. Check that article again before installing, because Rockstar says requirements can change.
What PC specifications does Red Dead Redemption 2 require?
Rockstar’s current Windows PC requirements list a minimum tier and a recommended tier. The specifications below are the publisher’s named examples and thresholds, not results from performance tests. The table does not promise performance at a specific resolution, graphics preset or frame rate.

These figures and model examples are from Rockstar Games Customer Support’s PC system requirements article, last updated April 30, 2024. “Minimum” and “recommended” are the publisher’s tiers; they are not a measured FPS scale. Rockstar does not specify in this table how many frames per second a matching computer should deliver, which visual preset to expect, or whether a given system will suit a particular monitor.

How to find your PC’s specifications in Windows
Record the specifications of the computer you will actually use to play. If you are checking a laptop, keep its exact model and graphics adapter in view: the processor name alone is not enough to identify its graphics capability.
1. Find your Windows edition, processor and installed memory
- Open Settings > System > About.
- Note the Windows edition and version, processor model, and installed RAM. The page identifies the processor and installed memory; compare the actual values and names rather than relying on a general description such as “gaming PC.”
- Check whether Windows is 64-bit. Rockstar lists Windows 10 64-bit in both tiers. A different Windows edition or architecture is not an exact match to that row.
Installed RAM is the amount of system memory, not the graphics card’s dedicated video memory. They are separate entries in Rockstar’s list and must be checked separately.
2. Identify the graphics adapter and its memory
- Open Task Manager > Performance > GPU. If Task Manager is in its compact view, choose the option to show more details first.
- Record the GPU model shown. If more than one GPU is listed, check whether the PC has a discrete graphics adapter as well as integrated graphics. On a laptop, note the discrete adapter’s model if present.
- Look for dedicated GPU memory, sometimes shown as dedicated GPU memory or dedicated video memory. Do not mistake shared GPU memory—which uses system RAM—for the dedicated memory figures in Rockstar’s examples.
If Task Manager does not clearly identify the adapter or its memory, search for dxdiag from Start and open the DirectX Diagnostic Tool. Review the display information for the adapter name and available memory details. Windows may show multiple display devices; make sure you record the adapter relevant to the PC rather than assuming the first name you see is the only one.
Graphics names are specific. “Nvidia,” “Radeon,” “GTX,” “RTX” or “gaming graphics” by itself is not enough to match a model in the requirements. Record the full model number and its memory where available. The same general brand or product family can include substantially different hardware.

3. Check available storage on the installation drive
- Open File Explorer > This PC.
- Find the drive where you plan to install the game and check its free space.
- Compare that free space with Rockstar’s 150 GB storage listing. The minimum row specifies an HDD; the recommended row lists 150 GB without naming a different drive type.
Check the intended drive, not merely the combined capacity of every drive in the computer. A PC can have enough total storage across multiple drives but insufficient free space on the drive selected for installation.
4. Note the sound hardware
Rockstar lists a DirectX-compatible sound card for both tiers. If your PC uses its normal built-in audio hardware, note the configuration rather than treating the sound row as a substitute for checking the main components. The published table does not name a specific sound-card model.
How to compare your PC with the requirements
Make a component-by-component comparison. First assess the minimum column; then, separately, assess whether your PC matches the recommended examples. Do not average the results. A stronger processor does not cancel out a graphics card that falls below or cannot be matched to the graphics requirement.
- Operating system: Compare the edition and architecture. The listed operating system is Windows 10 64-bit for both tiers.
- Processor: Compare your exact Intel or AMD processor model with the named minimum and recommended examples. A brand match alone is not a model match.
- Memory: Compare installed system RAM with 8 GB minimum and 12 GB recommended.
- Graphics: Compare the exact adapter and its dedicated memory with one of the named GPU examples in the relevant tier. Do not use system RAM or a GPU family label as a stand-in for dedicated video memory or a full model match.
- Storage: Compare free space on the intended installation drive with the listed 150 GB.
- Sound: Compare with the listed DirectX-compatible sound requirement.
Rockstar’s CPU and GPU entries name examples rather than supplying a cross-brand conversion chart. If your processor or graphics adapter is not one of the named models, the table alone may not establish whether it is equivalent. Avoid declaring a definite match based only on a model’s branding, generation, clock speed or a comparison with a different component.

What your result means
- Every component matches the minimum examples: Your PC meets the listed minimum specifications. This is a compatibility check against the publisher’s table, not a prediction of how well the game will run.
- Every component matches the recommended examples: Your PC matches the listed recommended tier. Rockstar’s table still does not specify a target frame rate, resolution or preset for that tier.
- One or more components are below the minimum examples: Your PC does not meet the listed minimum as written. Do not assume the other components make up for the shortfall.
- A component is unlisted or unclear: The requirements table does not establish a confident match for that configuration. This matters especially for integrated or mobile graphics, which may not correspond directly to the desktop examples.
What the minimum and recommended tiers cannot tell you
A requirements list is a screening tool, not a benchmark. Rockstar’s current table does not give named FPS results for the listed graphics cards, nor does it tie either tier to a resolution, display refresh rate or graphics preset. It therefore cannot answer a more specific question such as whether a particular PC will hold a chosen frame rate at a chosen setting.
Two computers that appear to match a listed component can still differ in their complete configuration. The table does not provide a performance estimate for every possible combination of processor, graphics adapter and memory. Meeting the minimum should be reported as “meets the listed minimum,” not “will run smoothly,” “will run at 1080p” or “will reach 60 FPS.” Those stronger claims are not established by the publisher’s specification table.
Likewise, the recommended column is not a promise of a particular experience. It identifies Rockstar’s stronger named tier, but it does not specify the settings or performance outcome a player should expect. If you have a specific target, the requirements table alone is not sufficient to confirm it.
Integrated graphics, laptop GPUs and unlisted hardware
Rockstar cautions that some mobile chipsets, integrated graphics and AGP graphics cards may be incompatible, and that unlisted specifications may not be supported. That warning is important when checking a laptop or a PC that relies on graphics built into its processor.
Rank #4
A laptop’s GPU name may resemble a desktop name without being an exact equivalent. Record the full adapter model as Windows reports it, including any mobile designation, and compare it cautiously. Do not infer compatibility from the fact that the laptop has a recent processor or that its GPU shares a product-family name with one of Rockstar’s examples.
If Windows lists both an integrated GPU and a discrete GPU, write down both rather than assuming the discrete adapter is active in every context. If the discrete GPU’s identity or memory cannot be confirmed, mark the graphics result as uncertain. Rockstar’s warning means an unlisted or integrated configuration should not be presented as a confirmed pass simply because the other rows meet the minimum.

Hardware requirements are only one part of readiness. Rockstar says that installation and online play require a Rockstar Games account. An internet connection is required for activation, online play and periodic entitlement verification. Rockstar also lists the Rockstar platform and other software components as requirements. These are account, connectivity and software prerequisites—not extra GPU or CPU performance thresholds.

The store confirms the PC game is offered for purchase, but a purchase or account does not establish that a particular computer meets the hardware table.
Why older requirement lists may disagree
Rockstar’s 2019 launch announcement used a different operating-system row: Windows 7 SP1 appeared as the minimum, while an early Windows 10 build appeared in the recommended row. The newer Customer Support article, last updated April 30, 2024, lists Windows 10 64-bit for both tiers. For a current compatibility check, use the newer support article rather than carrying forward the launch-era OS entries.
Rockstar’s support article also warns: “Over time downloadable content and programming changes will change the system requirements for this game.” Because the publisher explicitly notes that requirements may change, revisit its current support page if you are checking well after the listed update date. Do not treat an older launch announcement or an undated third-party requirements list as more current than the publisher’s updated support information.
What to do if your PC falls short
Start by identifying the exact row that fails or cannot be confirmed. A generic recommendation to “upgrade your PC” is not useful: the right next step depends on the specific shortfall, the rest of the computer, compatibility and what performance you want.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- Write down the shortfall. Record the exact processor, RAM, graphics adapter and dedicated memory, operating system, or available drive space that differs from the minimum row.
- Separate compatibility from performance goals. The published table can show whether named minimum examples match your system. It cannot tell you what upgrade will deliver a desired resolution, preset or frame rate.
- Check the whole PC before considering a component change. An upgrade must be compatible with the computer and make sense alongside its other components. The requirements table does not establish compatibility, cost or value for a proposed part.
- Compare total cost with your target. Decide what result you need before spending money. No specific CPU, GPU, memory kit or drive can be recommended responsibly from the requirements table alone.
- Recheck the publisher’s current requirements. Rockstar says downloadable content and programming changes can change requirements, so base a later purchase or upgrade decision on current publisher information.
For storage specifically, Rockstar’s table lists 150 GB and identifies an HDD in the minimum row; it does not require an SSD. Do not buy a drive on the assumption that the published requirement demands one. Whether another drive would be useful for your setup is a separate question that the requirements table does not answer.
