If by “the new Harry Potter RPG” you mean Hogwarts Legacy, compare your Windows version, processor, memory, graphics card and VRAM, DirectX support, and available storage with the game’s official PC specification tiers. The minimum/Low tier targets 720p at 30 frames per second on Low settings; Recommended/High targets 1080p at 60 fps; Ultra targets 1440p at 60 fps; and Ultra 4K targets 2160p at 60 fps.

The title is ambiguous, however. Those figures apply to Hogwarts Legacy, the most plausible match, not to every Harry Potter game or a future RPG. If you mean another game, use that game’s own official requirements instead.

First, confirm which Harry Potter game you mean

“A new Harry Potter RPG” is not a unique product name. The available official specification page is for Hogwarts Legacy, so this guide uses it as the likely reference. Treat that identification as an inference. A different Harry Potter title can require substantially different hardware, even if it runs on the same Windows PC.

Official Hogwarts Legacy PC requirements

Every displayed tier lists 64-bit Windows 10 and DirectX 12. The tiers are performance targets, not guarantees: frame rate can vary with drivers, background programs, game updates, resolution scaling, and the particular PC configuration.

Tier and publisher target Processor Memory Graphics card Storage
Minimum/Low
720p, 30 fps, Low quality
Intel Core i5-6600 (3.3 GHz) or AMD Ryzen 5 1400 (3.2 GHz) 16 GB NVIDIA GeForce GTX 960 4GB or AMD Radeon RX 470 4GB 85 GB; HDD supported, SSD preferred
Recommended/High
1080p, 60 fps, High quality
Intel Core i7-8700 (3.2 GHz) or AMD Ryzen 5 3600 (3.6 GHz) 16 GB NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1080 Ti, AMD Radeon RX 5700 XT, or Intel Arc A770 85 GB SSD
Ultra
1440p, 60 fps, Ultra quality
Intel Core i7-10700K (3.80 GHz) or AMD Ryzen 7 5800X (3.80 GHz) 32 GB NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2080 Ti or AMD Radeon RX 6800 XT 85 GB SSD

2160p, 60 fps, Ultra quality
Intel Core i7-10700K (3.80 GHz) or AMD Ryzen 7 5800X (3.80 GHz) 32 GB NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3090 Ti or AMD Radeon RX 7900 XT 85 GB SSD

The processor and graphics examples in the table are the models named by the publisher. They are not a built-in equivalency calculator. An unlisted chip or card cannot be declared a match merely from its model number; use current independent benchmarks or the game’s own support information for an informed comparison.

What the four tiers actually mean

Minimum/Low is a baseline, not a 60-fps promise

A PC meeting every Minimum/Low item is intended for 720p at 30 fps with Low quality. “Meeting” means the processor, RAM, graphics card, VRAM, operating system, DirectX support, and storage conditions all line up. A faster GPU does not compensate for insufficient RAM, and extra RAM does not make an underpowered GPU equivalent to the listed model.

Recommended/High is a different goal

The Recommended/High row is aimed at 1080p and 60 fps on High settings. A computer that only meets Minimum/Low may launch the game but still need lower resolution, lower settings, or a frame-rate cap. Do not describe a minimum match as a recommended match.

Ultra and Ultra 4K raise both image and hardware demands

Ultra targets 1440p at 60 fps and requires 32 GB of RAM plus substantially stronger graphics hardware. Ultra 4K targets 2160p (4K) at 60 fps and names still faster GPUs; it uses the same listed processor and RAM requirements as the Ultra row. These are the publisher’s stated targets under suitable conditions, not assurances that every system with the named parts will sustain 60 fps in every scene.

How to check your own PC in Windows

1. Confirm the Windows edition and processor

  1. Open Settings > System > About.
  2. Under Windows specifications, verify that you are running a 64-bit edition of Windows 10 or a later compatible Windows version supported by the game. The official table specifically lists Windows 10 64-bit.
  3. In Device specifications, record the processor name. Include the full model, such as “Intel Core i7-8700,” rather than only the brand or clock speed.

If Settings shows an ARM-based processor, a virtual machine, or an unusual mobile chip, do not assume it is equivalent to one of the listed desktop processors. The official table names example Intel and AMD models, and it does not provide cross-architecture conversion rules.

2. Check installed RAM

  1. Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager.
  2. Select Performance > Memory.
  3. Record the total installed memory. Compare it with 16 GB for Minimum/Low or Recommended/High, and 32 GB for Ultra or Ultra 4K.

Use the total installed amount, not the percentage currently free. Closing applications can reduce active usage, but it cannot turn an 8 GB system into a 16 GB system. If your PC has exactly the listed amount, leave additional headroom for Windows and other software rather than opening memory-heavy programs while playing.

3. Identify the graphics card and VRAM

  1. In Task Manager, open Performance > GPU. The panel shows the GPU model and dedicated GPU memory (VRAM) when Windows exposes it.
  2. Alternatively, press Win+R, enter dxdiag, and select the Display or Render tab. Record the card name and display memory.
  3. Compare the card model and VRAM with the tier you want. The Minimum/Low examples each specify 4 GB.

Do not confuse dedicated VRAM with shared system memory. Integrated graphics may borrow ordinary RAM and may not meet a requirement that names a discrete 4 GB card. If the PC has both integrated and discrete GPUs, record both and determine which one the game will use.

4. Check DirectX support

  1. Press Win+R, type dxdiag, and press Enter.
  2. On the System tab, read DirectX Version.
  3. Confirm that it reports DirectX 12, which is listed across all four official tiers.

DirectX version alone does not prove compatibility. It is one condition alongside the processor, GPU, memory, operating system, drivers, and storage.

5. Measure free storage and the drive type

  1. Open File Explorer > This PC.
  2. Read the free-space figure for the drive where you plan to install the game. The official listing specifies 85 GB in every tier.
  3. Right-click the drive, choose Properties, and note whether it is identified as an SSD or HDD. Windows 10’s Optimize Drives tool can also identify the media type.

Minimum/Low lists an HDD as supported but prefers an SSD. Recommended/High, Ultra, and Ultra 4K specify an SSD. Keep additional working space for Windows updates, shader caches, save files, and other applications; 85 GB is the game’s stated storage figure, not a recommendation to fill a drive to its last available gigabyte.

6. Check laptops and systems with multiple GPUs

A laptop can report an integrated GPU and a more powerful discrete GPU. In Settings > System > Display > Graphics, add the game after installation and select Options to choose the high-performance GPU when that control is available. Also connect the charger and use the laptop’s performance power mode while testing. The exact labels can vary by Windows version and manufacturer.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For desktops, connect the monitor to the intended graphics card rather than the motherboard video output when the system has a discrete card. A mismatch here can make a capable PC appear to run on weaker integrated graphics.

How to compare your results without overclaiming

Require every minimum item for a minimum verdict

Create a short checklist with one line for each category: Windows, CPU, RAM, GPU and VRAM, DirectX, and storage. You should call the PC a Minimum/Low match only when no line falls below the listed baseline. A match on five categories does not cancel a shortfall on the sixth.

  • Windows: 64-bit Windows 10 is the listed operating system.
  • CPU: at least the named i5-6600 or Ryzen 5 1400 class shown by the publisher.
  • RAM: 16 GB.
  • GPU: at least the listed GTX 960 4GB or RX 470 4GB examples, subject to real-world benchmark uncertainty for unlisted cards.
  • DirectX: version 12.
  • Storage: 85 GB available; HDD is allowed for this tier, with SSD preferred.

Choose the row that matches your desired experience

If your goal is 1080p/60 on High, compare against Recommended/High rather than stopping after the Minimum/Low check. For 1440p or 4K, compare against the corresponding Ultra row. This prevents a common mistake: declaring “can run” when the reader actually wants a resolution and frame rate the PC was never designed to deliver.

Handle borderline or unlisted parts cautiously

The official page supplies representative models, not a complete list of every generation. A newer low-end card can behave differently from an older high-end card despite a larger model number, and mobile versions of a GPU can perform differently from desktop versions. For a borderline result, look up independent benchmarks for the exact processor and GPU, preferably at the resolution you intend to use. Keep that evidence separate from the publisher’s official requirements; it is an estimate, not an official equivalency ruling.

If your PC falls short

Insufficient free space

First remove or relocate files you no longer need, then recheck the available space. If you add a drive, verify the PC’s interface and physical form factor before buying anything: a desktop may accept a 2.5-inch SATA SSD or an M.2 drive, while a laptop may support only one of those options. The official game listing establishes the 85 GB capacity requirement but does not establish which drive type your computer accepts.

If shopping for capacity, “1TB SSD” is a useful general search phrase, not a promise that every 1TB drive fits your computer. Check the motherboard or laptop manual for supported SATA or M.2 interfaces, drive length, and available bays. Also leave room for the operating system and other games instead of treating 85 GB as the total capacity you should purchase.

Not enough RAM

If Task Manager reports less than 16 GB, the system is below the listed Minimum/Low and Recommended/High memory figure. Check the motherboard or laptop’s maximum supported capacity, available slots, and whether existing modules must be replaced as a matched kit. Do not assume that adding memory is possible in a thin laptop with soldered RAM.

For an Ultra target, 16 GB is still short even if the processor and graphics card are strong enough. The official Ultra and Ultra 4K rows both call for 32 GB, so evaluate the cost and physical feasibility of a memory upgrade before buying other parts. A memory upgrade also does not turn a below-baseline graphics card into an Ultra card.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Weak graphics hardware

A GPU below the Minimum/Low examples is the most direct reason to expect trouble with the stated 720p/30 target. Integrated graphics and cards with less VRAM than the named 4 GB examples require particular caution. Lowering resolution and quality can reduce load, but it does not change the fact that the PC is outside the publisher’s listed baseline.

When comparing a replacement card, check the exact desktop or laptop model, VRAM, power-supply capacity, case clearance, and display outputs. The official requirements do not say which replacement card, power supply, or chassis will work in your computer, so those are separate compatibility checks.

Rank #4

Older processor or missing DirectX support

If the CPU is below the named models, or dxdiag does not report DirectX 12, the PC does not satisfy the official Minimum/Low checklist. Driver updates can fix software problems, but they cannot add missing CPU features or DirectX-capable hardware.

What to do when the game installs but performance is poor

  1. Confirm the game is using the intended discrete GPU, especially on a laptop.
  2. Close browsers, recording tools, launchers, and other applications that consume RAM or GPU time.
  3. Use the Low preset and a 720p output as a diagnostic baseline, then raise one setting at a time.
  4. Watch GPU utilization, dedicated VRAM, system memory, temperatures, and clock speeds in Task Manager or a trusted monitoring utility.
  5. Install current graphics drivers from the GPU manufacturer and restart Windows before retesting.
  6. If storage is an HDD and you are targeting a tier that specifies an SSD, move the installation to a compatible SSD before judging loading behavior.

These steps can improve a qualifying system, but they cannot guarantee the publisher’s target on hardware below the listed tier. Record the exact resolution, quality preset, frame-rate cap, driver version, and GPU in any support request so the result can be reproduced.

Common checking mistakes

  • Looking only at the CPU. The game’s rows require a combination of CPU, RAM, GPU, VRAM, DirectX, operating system, and storage. A strong processor cannot compensate for a graphics card below the baseline.
  • Reading “can run” as “runs at 60 fps.” The minimum row is explicitly a 720p/30 Low target. Sixty frames per second belongs to the Recommended, Ultra, and Ultra 4K targets at their respective resolutions.
  • Comparing brand names instead of full models. “Core i7” and “RTX” cover many generations and performance levels. Record the complete model and whether a GPU is a laptop version.
  • Counting shared memory as VRAM. Windows may show system memory available to an integrated GPU, but that is not the same as a discrete card with 4 GB dedicated VRAM.
  • Ignoring the active GPU. A monitor plugged into a motherboard output or a laptop set to an energy-saving GPU can make the game use weaker hardware than expected.
  • Leaving no storage margin. Eighty-five GB is the listed game figure. Updates, temporary files, shader caches, and Windows need additional free space.
  • Assuming an SSD is universal. Confirm the interface, physical size, slot availability, and installation procedure before ordering a drive.

A simple worksheet for your result

Write down the following before deciding whether to buy the game or upgrade:

  1. Windows edition and whether it is 64-bit.
  2. Full CPU model and advertised clock speed.
  3. Installed RAM in gigabytes.
  4. Exact active GPU model, dedicated VRAM, and whether it is desktop or mobile.
  5. DirectX version shown by dxdiag.
  6. Free space on the intended installation drive and whether it is an SSD or HDD.
  7. Your actual goal: 720p/30 Low, 1080p/60 High, 1440p/60 Ultra, or 2160p/60 Ultra.

Compare each line with the matching row rather than producing one vague “pass” or “fail” score. If one line is below the row, label the result as below that tier. If a part is unlisted, label it uncertain until an exact-model benchmark or current official support note gives you more confidence.

A quick decision checklist

  • Can it meet Minimum/Low? Every listed baseline is satisfied, including 16 GB RAM, a qualifying 4 GB graphics example or a well-supported equivalent, DirectX 12, and 85 GB available.
  • Can it target 1080p/60 High? Compare all components with Recommended/High; a Minimum/Low match is not enough.
  • Can it target 1440p/60 Ultra? Check the Ultra CPU, 32 GB RAM, RTX 2080 Ti or RX 6800 XT class GPU, and SSD requirement.
  • Can it target 4K/60 Ultra? Check the Ultra 4K GPU examples, while retaining the 32 GB RAM, processor, and SSD conditions.
  • Is the answer uncertain? The component is unlisted or borderline. Treat the result as unconfirmed and consult benchmarks for the exact model instead of guessing from the name.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can my PC run Hogwarts Legacy with only 8 GB of RAM?

The official Minimum/Low and Recommended/High rows list 16 GB, so an 8 GB system is below the stated baseline. Upgrading may help, but confirm that the motherboard or laptop supports additional memory.

Does meeting the minimum requirement mean 60 fps?

No. Minimum/Low is aimed at 720p and 30 fps on Low quality. The 60-fps targets are 1080p High, 1440p Ultra, and 2160p Ultra 4K tiers.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is an SSD required?

The Minimum/Low row supports an HDD but prefers an SSD. Recommended/High, Ultra, and Ultra 4K specify an 85 GB SSD.

How much storage should I reserve?

The official listing says 85 GB in every tier. Keep extra free space for Windows, updates, shader caches, saves, and other applications rather than filling the drive completely.

Can integrated graphics run the game?

The listed Minimum/Low examples are discrete 4 GB GTX 960 or RX 470 cards. Integrated graphics borrow system memory, so do not assume they meet that baseline without exact-model evidence.

What if my graphics card is not in the table?

The publisher lists representative models, not every card. Check independent benchmarks for the exact GPU, account for desktop versus mobile versions, and treat the result as an estimate rather than an official equivalency.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why does my laptop use the wrong GPU?

Laptops often have integrated and discrete graphics. In Windows Graphics settings, assign the game to the high-performance GPU when available, connect the charger, and use a performance power mode.

Will a 1TB SSD work in my PC?

Capacity alone does not establish compatibility. Check whether your desktop or laptop accepts a 2.5-inch SATA drive or an M.2 drive, including the correct interface, length, slot, and mounting hardware.

The Bottom Line

For Hogwarts Legacy, begin with the official row that matches the experience you want. Minimum/Low means 720p/30 on Low with 16 GB RAM, a GTX 960 4GB or RX 470 4GB class example, DirectX 12, and 85 GB available. Recommended/High, Ultra, and Ultra 4K demand progressively stronger GPUs, with 32 GB RAM for the two Ultra tiers and an SSD for every tier above Minimum/Low. Check every category on your own PC, and treat unlisted or borderline parts as uncertain rather than assuming a model-number match.
