Use Windows’ DirectX Diagnostic Tool (dxdiag) to record your operating system, processor, RAM, graphics card, video memory and driver details. Then compare those values with Rockstar Games’ separate PC requirements for Grand Theft Auto V Enhanced or Legacy—the edition you plan to play. Meeting every minimum is only a requirements check, not a promise of a particular resolution, frame rate or smooth experience.
What you need to check
GTA Online on PC is delivered through the PC edition of Grand Theft Auto V. Rockstar currently publishes two requirement sets: Enhanced and Legacy. They are not interchangeable. A computer can meet Legacy requirements yet fall below Enhanced requirements, so identify the edition installed in your launcher or the edition you intend to buy before judging the result.
Rockstar’s PC requirements page was updated on December 10, 2025. It also warns that downloadable content and programming changes can alter system requirements over time. Treat the table below as the current published baseline, then recheck Rockstar’s page if the game, launcher or edition changes.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind your exact PC specifications with dxdiag
dxdiag is built into Windows and gives you the component names needed for a meaningful comparison. Do not rely on a seller’s broad description such as NVIDIA graphics or AMD processor; record the complete model number.

- Enter
dxdiag, then select OK. - If Windows asks whether it should check WHQL digital signatures, choose Yes, following Rockstar’s compatibility instructions.
- On the System tab, record the operating system and version, processor name, and installed memory.
- Open the Display tab. Record the graphics-device name, chip information, approximate total memory or display memory, and driver version and date.
- If more than one Display tab appears, inspect each adapter. A laptop may list integrated graphics and a separate graphics processor; note which adapter the game is configured to use.
What each dxdiag field means
- Operating system: Write down the Windows edition and, for Enhanced, check the build number. Rockstar’s Enhanced minimum specifies Windows 10 build 1909 or newer; its recommended row specifies Windows 11.
- Processor: Copy the full Intel or AMD model. A family name such as Core i5 or Ryzen 5 is not enough because models within one family differ substantially.
- Memory: This is system RAM, not graphics memory. Record the installed amount and, where shown, whether the machine is operating in dual-channel mode.
- Display device: Record the exact GPU model, such as a particular GeForce or Radeon model. The brand alone cannot establish compatibility.
- Display memory: Note dedicated video memory separately from shared system memory. Onboard graphics can borrow ordinary RAM, and dxdiag may report that shared amount as part of approximate total memory.
- Driver details: Keep the driver version and date. They are useful when diagnosing launch or rendering problems, although Rockstar’s requirement rows do not specify a minimum driver version.
Check storage outside dxdiag
dxdiag does not tell you whether the game is installed on a suitable drive with enough free capacity. In File Explorer, open This PC, identify the drive that will hold the game, and check its free space and type. Windows’ Settings > System > Storage page can also show installed drives. Enhanced has an SSD requirement at minimum and a DirectStorage-compatible drive in the recommended row; Legacy’s published rows specify an HDD. The drive must satisfy the edition’s requirement as well as the capacity shown in the table.
Rockstar’s published PC requirements
| Edition and tier | Operating system | Processor | Memory | Graphics | Storage |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Enhanced minimum | Windows 10, build 1909 or above | Intel Core i7-4770 or AMD FX-9590 | 8GB RAM | NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1630, 4GB, or AMD Radeon RX 6400, 4GB | 105GB SSD required |
| Enhanced recommended | Windows 11 | Intel Core i5-9600K or AMD Ryzen 5 3600 | 16GB dual-channel RAM | NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3060, 8GB, or AMD Radeon RX 6600 XT, 8GB | 105GB DirectStorage-compatible drive |
| Legacy minimum | Windows 10 64-bit | Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 or AMD Phenom 9850 Quad-Core | 4GB RAM | NVIDIA 9800 GT, 1GB, or AMD HD 4870, 1GB | 125GB HDD |
| Legacy recommended | Windows 10 64-bit | Intel Core i5-3470 or AMD FX-8350 | 8GB RAM | NVIDIA GTX 660, 2GB, or AMD HD 7870, 2GB | 125GB HDD |
These are Rockstar Games’ published requirements for 2025, not independent benchmark measurements. The processor and graphics examples in a row are alternatives, not parts that must all be present. For example, a system with the listed Intel processor is being compared against the AMD processor in the same row, not against both.
Compare your results correctly
Use the row for the same edition first, then inspect every category. The weakest category determines whether your PC clears the published threshold.

1. Confirm the operating system
For Enhanced minimum, verify both Windows 10 and build 1909 or later. A Windows 10 installation that is older than that build does not satisfy the stated minimum even if its hardware does. Enhanced recommended names Windows 11. Legacy requires 64-bit Windows 10 in both tiers. You can view the edition, version and build under Settings > System > About or by running winver.
2. Compare the processor model
Match the complete CPU model from dxdiag with the appropriate row. Do not infer equivalence from clock speed, the number of advertised cores, or a generic label such as Core i7. If your model is not listed, Rockstar’s table does not establish a definitive pass or fail for it. Treat a newer or otherwise stronger processor as an informed comparison rather than a guaranteed result.
3. Compare system RAM
Use the memory value on the System tab, not the graphics-memory figure on the Display tab. Enhanced’s two rows distinguish ordinary 8GB system memory from 16GB in dual-channel configuration. Legacy’s rows distinguish 4GB from 8GB. A machine can have enough total RAM for one edition while its integrated graphics reserves part of that memory, leaving less available to Windows and the game.
4. Compare the exact GPU and video memory
Check the model and its dedicated memory together. A graphics card with the right brand but a different model is not automatically equivalent. The published rows call for 4GB graphics memory for Enhanced minimum and 8GB for Enhanced recommended, while the Legacy rows specify 1GB and 2GB respectively. Those figures describe Rockstar’s listed cards and are not a frame-rate forecast.

5. Confirm the drive type and capacity
Check both the amount of free space and the storage technology. Enhanced’s minimum row requires an SSD, and its recommended row adds DirectStorage compatibility. Legacy’s rows list an HDD. A drive that is large enough but has the wrong type does not satisfy the corresponding Enhanced storage requirement. Conversely, replacing a drive cannot compensate for an underpowered processor or graphics adapter.
What a match does—and does not—tell you
If every item in the minimum row matches the edition you selected, your PC meets Rockstar’s published minimum specification on paper. That is a screening result, not a guarantee that the game will run at a particular resolution, graphics preset, frame rate or level of smoothness. Rockstar publishes no benchmark result or performance promise with these rows.
The recommended row is a higher target, not merely another way to describe the minimum. A computer closer to that row has a specification profile nearer Rockstar’s recommended configuration, but the page still does not promise a measured frame rate. Background applications, thermal limits, driver state, laptop power settings and future game updates can affect actual behavior.
If one component falls below minimum, the table cannot certify the PC for that edition. If a component is newer or different but not named, use the listed models as comparison points and avoid claiming certainty from the brand name alone. An unlisted integrated or mobile chipset deserves extra caution because Rockstar specifically warns that some may be incompatible.

Integrated graphics and laptops need extra care
Integrated graphics share the computer’s system memory instead of using a separate pool of dedicated VRAM. Dxdiag can therefore show shared memory that looks larger than the adapter’s practical graphics capability. Compare the exact chip model, not the shared-memory total.
Rockstar’s compatibility guidance warns that some integrated graphics and mobile chipsets may be incompatible. Laptop specifications can also vary by power limit, cooling design and whether the discrete GPU is active. In Windows, check Settings > System > Display > Graphics and set the game to the high-performance GPU when a discrete adapter is available. This setting does not turn an under-spec adapter into a supported one; it only prevents Windows from selecting the lower-power adapter by default.
Online requirements beyond hardware
Passing the hardware comparison is not sufficient for GTA Online. Rockstar states that online play and activation require an internet connection and a Rockstar Games network login. The game also performs periodic entitlement verification. Make sure the account can sign in, the launcher is installed and updated, and the network permits the launcher and game to reach Rockstar’s services.

Storage upgrade for Enhanced
An SSD is the clearest hardware purchase path when a computer otherwise meets the Enhanced row but has no qualifying SSD. Rockstar does not identify a particular drive model or interface, so confirm that the computer has a compatible slot or connector, supports the chosen capacity, and can boot or install the game on that drive. The SSD alone cannot make an under-spec CPU, GPU, operating system or memory configuration compliant.
Memory, processor or graphics upgrades
Use the comparison table to identify the limiting category, then verify whether the computer actually permits that component to be replaced. Many laptops have soldered memory or non-upgradeable graphics, while desktop upgrades may require a compatible motherboard socket, power supply, case clearance and cooling. Do not buy based only on a higher RAM number: graphics memory, CPU model, operating-system version and storage type remain separate requirements.
Choosing between editions
If a PC does not meet Enhanced’s row but does meet Legacy’s row, the published requirements support considering Legacy rather than describing the machine as Enhanced-compatible. Confirm which edition your account and launcher provide before installing, because the two editions use different requirement sets and storage expectations.
Troubleshoot a failed or uncertain check
The operating system is too old
Install current Windows updates and recheck the build with winver. If the computer cannot move to the required Windows version or build, it does not satisfy that edition’s published operating-system requirement.
The wrong GPU appears in dxdiag
On a laptop, inspect every Display tab and Windows’ Graphics settings. Connect the charger, select the high-performance adapter for the game, and rerun the check. If only an integrated adapter is present, compare its exact chip and heed Rockstar’s warning about possible incompatibility.
Video memory is reported as shared
Do not count shared system memory as equivalent to dedicated VRAM without qualification. Record the adapter model and dedicated-memory field, then compare that information with the graphics row. If dxdiag reports no dedicated memory, the table does not establish that the adapter qualifies merely because the approximate total is high.

The drive has enough space but is the wrong type
Verify whether the installation drive is an SSD or HDD rather than checking capacity alone. For Enhanced, also investigate DirectStorage compatibility when targeting the recommended row. If the computer has multiple drives, confirm the launcher will install the game on the qualifying one.
Everything matches but the game still will not connect
Separate launch and network checks from hardware checks. Confirm the Rockstar Games account can authenticate, the internet connection is working, and security software or a network firewall is not blocking the launcher. A successful specification comparison cannot resolve an account or service-access problem.

Start by writing “Enhanced” or “Legacy” at the top of your notes. Then create one line each for Windows version, CPU, RAM, GPU model, graphics memory, storage capacity and storage type. Mark each line as meeting minimum, below minimum, or not directly comparable. This prevents a strong result in one category from hiding a shortfall in another.
For example, an 8GB system with a GTX 1630 4GB and a Windows 10 build at least 1909 can match the Enhanced minimum hardware entries only if the processor also reaches the listed Core i7-4770 or FX-9590 level and the game is on a qualifying 105GB SSD. The same machine would still be below Enhanced recommended because that row calls for Windows 11, 16GB dual-channel memory, an RTX 3060 or RX 6600 XT with 8GB, and a DirectStorage-compatible drive. Conversely, a PC with 4GB RAM and a GTX 660 2GB may align with Legacy recommended graphics but must also satisfy its CPU, 64-bit Windows 10 and 125GB HDD entries.
When comparing two computers, compare the same row in the same order. Do not compare one computer with Enhanced minimum and the other with Legacy recommended. Record exact models before deciding that one is stronger, and treat an unlisted part as uncertain rather than automatically equivalent.
Keep your check current
Rockstar’s requirements page was last updated December 10, 2025, while its compatibility instructions were last updated April 28, 2024. Requirements can change as downloadable content and programming changes are introduced. Save your dxdiag notes, but repeat the check after a major edition, launcher or operating-system change. A result that was valid for Legacy is not automatically valid after moving to Enhanced, and a hardware match never replaces the separate internet, account and entitlement checks.
A printable self-check
- Edition selected: Enhanced or Legacy.
- Operating-system edition, architecture and build recorded.
- Full processor model recorded.
- Total system RAM recorded, including dual-channel status where relevant.
- Every graphics adapter listed in dxdiag reviewed.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I check GTA Online compatibility without installing the game?
Yes. Use dxdiag to record Windows, CPU, RAM, GPU and video memory, then check storage separately and compare every item with Rockstar’s Enhanced or Legacy table. This establishes a requirements match, not a guaranteed frame rate.
What is the difference between GTA V Enhanced and Legacy requirements?
They are separate requirement sets. Enhanced minimum calls for Windows 10 build 1909 or newer, 8GB RAM, a listed 4GB GPU and a 105GB SSD. Legacy minimum calls for 64-bit Windows 10, 4GB RAM, a listed 1GB GPU and 125GB HDD. Use the row for the edition you will actually install.
Is meeting the minimum enough for smooth GTA Online performance?
No. Rockstar describes the minimum as a screening threshold and does not publish a benchmark, resolution target or frame-rate promise. The recommended row is a closer match to Rockstar’s higher target, but it also is not a measured performance guarantee.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Does shared graphics memory count as dedicated VRAM?
Do not treat it as equivalent without qualification. Integrated graphics can borrow system RAM, and dxdiag may include shared memory in approximate total memory. Compare the exact adapter and its dedicated-memory field with Rockstar’s listed GPU.
Can adding an SSD make an old PC compatible with Enhanced?
Only the storage category is addressed by that upgrade. Enhanced requires a 105GB SSD at minimum, but the computer must also meet the operating-system, processor, RAM and graphics requirements. Rockstar does not specify a drive model or interface, so confirm the computer accepts the chosen drive.
What if my CPU or GPU model is not listed?
Rockstar’s table does not certify an unlisted component as a pass or fail. Use the listed models as comparison points, record the exact model, and avoid deciding from a broad label such as NVIDIA, AMD, Core i5 or Ryzen 5 alone.
Do I need internet access and a Rockstar account?
Yes. Rockstar states that activation and online play require an internet connection and a Rockstar Games network login. Periodic entitlement verification also occurs, so hardware compatibility alone cannot guarantee that GTA Online will connect.

Open Settings > System > About or run winver. Enhanced minimum requires Windows 10 build 1909 or above, while Enhanced recommended specifies Windows 11. Legacy requires 64-bit Windows 10 in both published tiers.
The Bottom Line
Run dxdiag, check your drive, and compare the exact Windows version, CPU, RAM, GPU, video memory and storage type with the matching Rockstar Enhanced or Legacy row. A complete minimum match means the PC meets the published baseline on paper; it does not promise a frame rate, compatibility for every unlisted component or access to online services.
