To find out whether your PC can run an open-world action RPG, compare your computer with that game’s current official PC requirements—category by category. Check Windows edition and architecture, processor, installed RAM, graphics card and VRAM, DirectX, and free storage. Then read the resolution, frame-rate, and graphics-preset target attached to the minimum and recommended tiers. Meeting “minimum” is a screening result, not a promise of smooth play at high settings.

Because no particular game or PC is specified here, this guide gives you a repeatable check rather than a yes-or-no verdict. Requirements differ by title, edition, updates, and the performance target you want.

What “can run” should mean for your decision

A requirements page usually gives two thresholds. The minimum tier is the publisher’s lowest stated configuration for starting the game under specified conditions. The recommended tier is a higher target, often tied to a more useful resolution, frame rate, or quality preset. Neither tier is an individually tested benchmark for every PC.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For an open-world action RPG, the distinction matters because large areas, streaming data, combat effects, and busy cities can stress a system differently from a quiet interior scene. A computer can launch a game and still deliver an experience that is below your preferred frame rate or image quality. Treat the published figures as a compatibility screen, then interpret them against the target the listing actually names.

Define your own goal before you judge the result. A player using a 1080p display at 60 frames per second needs a different match from someone willing to play at 720p and 30 frames per second. If you care about a high-refresh monitor, ray tracing, a particular upscaling mode, or consistently smooth performance in crowded areas, those expectations may exceed the basic recommended tier unless the publisher explicitly says otherwise.

  • Recommended or above: your parts meet the publisher’s stated target more closely, but exact frame rates can still vary by scene, configuration, and software state.
  • Minimum but below recommended: the game may be intended for a lower resolution, frame rate, or quality level. Use the listing’s notes rather than assuming modern 1080p/high performance.
  • Below minimum: locate the specific mismatch. A shortfall in storage is a different problem from a processor or graphics shortfall, and the remedies are not interchangeable.

Start with the exact, current requirements

Open the official store or publisher page for the exact game and PC edition you plan to install. Requirements can differ between a PC release and a console version, and a later update can change what the publisher lists. Capture both the minimum and recommended columns, including any notes about resolution, frames per second, quality preset, storage type, or operating-system version.

Use the page tied to the edition you will actually buy. A deluxe or expanded PC release can have different storage or software notes from another release, and a launcher may publish separate requirements from a storefront. If two official pages disagree, keep both links and use the newer, edition-specific notice while checking the game’s support page for an explanation.

Compare every category shown, not only the CPU and GPU:

  • Supported Windows edition and version, including 64-bit or other architecture wording.
  • Processor model or class.
  • Installed system memory (RAM).
  • Graphics processor model and, when listed, dedicated video memory (VRAM).
  • DirectX version.
  • Required free storage and whether an SSD is required, preferred, or merely supported.

Write down the target attached to each tier. “Minimum” without its performance note is incomplete information. If the page does not state a resolution or frame rate, do not invent one; record the omission and look for a game-specific support note before promising a result.

Requirements are not interchangeable labels. A game that asks for DirectX 12 may also depend on graphics features that an older card lacks, while a matching DirectX number does not mean the GPU has the required rendering capability. Likewise, a processor with a similar brand name can be a different generation or mobile version, so compare the complete model designation.

Find your PC’s specifications in Windows

Windows edition, version, processor, RAM, and architecture

  1. Open Settings > System > About.
  2. Under Windows specifications, record the edition and version.
  3. Under Device specifications, record the processor name, installed RAM, and whether the system is 32-bit or 64-bit.
  4. Copy the full processor model rather than a marketing family name. A model number is necessary for a meaningful comparison.

Microsoft’s “Find information about your Windows device” support page identifies this About screen as the place to see the Windows edition and version, processor type, installed RAM, and system architecture. If your PC still runs Windows 10, note that Microsoft’s page says ordinary support ended on October 14, 2025; do not treat Windows 10 as if it were still receiving normal free support updates.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Architecture matters independently of raw speed. If a game requires a 64-bit operating system, a 32-bit installation is a compatibility mismatch even when the processor appears powerful enough. Record the installed system type, not merely whether the processor itself supports 64-bit operation. Also note whether the listed RAM is installed memory or a smaller amount currently available to applications; requirements normally refer to installed system memory.

Free disk space and the correct drive

  1. Open Settings > System > Storage.
  2. Check the free space on the drive where you will install the game.
  3. If the PC has more than one drive, open Advanced storage settings > Storage used on other drives and inspect each candidate drive.

Compare free space—not the drive’s total capacity—with the game’s required available space. Leave room for the operating system, patches, save files, and temporary installation data; a drive that barely clears the listed figure can run out during an update. If the requirement distinguishes SSD and HDD, record the type of the drive you will actually use.

Do not assume that a second drive solves the problem automatically. The launcher may install to a different volume from the one you first inspected, and a game can require free space during unpacking even when the final installed folder is smaller. Confirm the destination before starting the download and recheck free space after reserving room for updates.

DirectX version

  1. Search Windows for DxDiag and open the diagnostic tool.
  2. On the System tab, find the DirectX version.
  3. Record the result exactly, then compare it with the game listing.

Microsoft’s “Which version of DirectX is on your PC?” support page documents this DxDiag check. Windows 10 and Windows 11 already include the latest DirectX version available for their respective releases, but the game’s requirement still controls compatibility. A current DirectX number does not compensate for an underpowered GPU or CPU.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use the same tool’s display information for graphics details, but remember that a DirectX runtime version is not a complete feature-level test. If the game’s support page calls out a particular feature or a specific card family, use that wording as an additional condition rather than relying on the version number alone.

Graphics card and VRAM

Use DxDiag’s display information to identify the actual graphics processor, then record the dedicated VRAM amount if the tool reports it. You can also consult the computer maker’s documentation. On a laptop, distinguish the discrete GPU from integrated graphics; do not infer the chip from the laptop’s product name alone.

Compare the exact GPU model with the game’s listed graphics card. If the requirement includes VRAM, compare the dedicated amount, not the PC’s total shared memory. If the page names only a GPU category and gives no VRAM figure, record the model comparison and do not create a VRAM threshold yourself.

Hybrid-graphics laptops can show both an integrated adapter and a discrete adapter. Make sure the game is configured to use the adapter you are comparing, and note which one DxDiag identifies for each display. Shared system memory can help an integrated GPU function, but it is not equivalent to dedicated VRAM when a requirement specifies dedicated video memory.

How to compare the two sides

Create a short record for the game and your PC, keeping the qualification beside every number. For example, write “game: 16 GB RAM minimum; PC: 16 GB installed,” rather than a bare “passes.” Do this for both tiers so you can see where the system changes from a minimum match to a recommended match.

When a requirement gives a named processor or graphics card, compare the full model and generation. When it gives a broad class, describe your comparison as approximate unless the publisher supplies an equivalence list. Do not treat a higher product number, more cores, or a newer release year as automatic proof of superiority across every workload.

  • Operating system: confirm edition, version, and architecture are supported.
  • CPU: compare the complete processor model or the class specified by the publisher.
  • RAM: compare installed system memory with the stated amount.
  • GPU: compare the actual graphics model and any VRAM requirement.
  • DirectX: compare the DxDiag version with the listing.
  • Storage: compare free space on the intended drive and its SSD/HDD type.

Use the weakest category to explain the result. If five categories meet recommended and the GPU meets only minimum, describe the PC as “GPU-limited to the minimum tier,” not simply “recommended.” A single unmet requirement can be decisive even when the other components are stronger.

Separate hard mismatches from preferences. “SSD preferred” is not the same as “SSD required,” and a listed frame-rate target is not a guarantee that every scene will hold that rate. Keep those distinctions in your notes so your final answer does not overstate what the requirements page proves.

Reading a real listing: the Hogwarts Legacy example

A current Steam Support listing for the representative open-world RPG Hogwarts Legacy shows why the performance note matters. Its minimum entry is tied to 720p at 30 frames per second on Low Quality Settings. Its recommended entry is tied to 1080p at 60 frames per second on High Quality Settings.

Listing detail Minimum tier Recommended tier
Performance target 720p, 30 fps 1080p, 60 fps
Quality target Low Quality Settings High Quality Settings
System RAM 16 GB 16 GB
DirectX DirectX 12 DirectX 12
Available storage 85 GB 85 GB
Storage device note SSD preferred; HDD supported SSD

The same 16 GB RAM figure appears in both tiers, so adding RAM would not by itself move a system from the minimum target to the recommended target in this example. The tiers differ in their stated graphics and experience targets. The listing also treats storage differently: an HDD is supported in the minimum notes, while the recommended notes specify an SSD. These are claims for this game, not universal rules for every open-world RPG.

This example also shows why you should preserve the qualifiers. “85 GB” describes available space, not the total capacity of a drive, and “DirectX 12” does not erase the separate GPU requirement. A PC can match the RAM and DirectX rows yet remain limited by its graphics processor or storage device.

Decide which outcome applies

You meet or exceed recommended

Report the result as “matches the publisher’s recommended tier.” Keep the wording qualified: the requirement is not a guarantee of a fixed frame rate in every scene. Your chosen resolution, display refresh rate, graphics options, background workload, and the game’s own updates can affect the observed result.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You meet minimum but not recommended

Use the minimum notes to set expectations. In the Hogwarts Legacy example, that means the listing’s 720p/30-fps Low target, not the 1080p/60-fps High target. A system in this position may still be playable after selecting the specified or lower settings, but the listing alone cannot promise a particular result outside those conditions.

You fall below a requirement

Identify the exact category and the size of the gap. A storage deficit can sometimes be addressed by freeing space or adding compatible storage. A processor or graphics deficit is not repaired by installing an SSD. If the mismatch is architectural or operating-system related, verify the game’s support policy before spending on hardware.

If several categories are below minimum, address the clearest blocker first and reassess the whole configuration. Fixing storage can make installation possible, but it cannot establish that the game will render acceptably. Conversely, meeting every component requirement does not create free disk space, so check both compatibility and capacity.

What an upgrade can and cannot fix

Storage shortfall

If the only problem is available space, remove unnecessary files, install to another suitable drive, or consider an internal SSD only after checking the PC’s supported form factor and interface. The game listing must actually require or prefer the storage type for that purchase to be relevant. An SSD does not turn a below-minimum CPU or GPU into a recommended one.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Before buying, verify whether the computer accepts the intended internal drive size and interface and whether an open bay or connector exists. No specific drive model or price follows from the requirements alone. If the listing merely supports an HDD, an SSD is an optional experience or loading choice, not proof that every reader needs one.

RAM mismatch

Compare installed RAM with the requirement and check whether the PC can accept more memory before buying. In the Hogwarts Legacy example, both tiers list 16 GB, so increasing beyond that figure is not evidence that the system has reached the recommended graphics target.

CPU or GPU mismatch

First verify that you identified the exact chip, including a laptop’s integrated and discrete adapters. Then compare that model with the game’s listed part or class. Do not substitute an SSD or extra storage for missing processing or graphics capability. A purchase decision also requires checking the motherboard, power, cooling, physical clearance, and other compatibility details; the requirements page alone cannot establish those hardware constraints.

A practical check you can repeat for any game

  1. Open the current official requirements page for the exact PC edition.
  2. Copy the minimum and recommended entries, including resolution, frame-rate, quality, DirectX, and storage notes.
  3. Open Settings > System > About and record Windows edition/version, CPU, RAM, and architecture.
  4. Open Settings > System > Storage; inspect other drives through Advanced storage settings > Storage used on other drives.
  5. Run DxDiag; record DirectX on the System tab and the GPU/VRAM details in the display information.
  6. Compare each category separately with the minimum tier, then repeat for recommended.
  7. Attach the listing’s performance target to your conclusion: for example, “meets minimum for the stated 720p/30 Low target.”
  8. For every mismatch, decide whether it is a software/settings issue, a storage-capacity issue, or a component limitation before considering a purchase.

Save the notes with the date you checked them. A game update, Windows change, driver change, or new edition can alter the relevant page, while your hardware record remains useful for future comparisons.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them

  • Checking only the CPU: a capable processor does not offset an under-spec GPU, insufficient VRAM, unsupported DirectX feature level, or inadequate storage.
  • Using total disk capacity: installation uses free space on the destination drive, not the drive’s headline size.
  • Reading “minimum” as “1080p high”: the publisher may attach a much lower target, as the Hogwarts Legacy listing does.
  • Guessing a laptop GPU: the model name can hide a different integrated or discrete adapter. Confirm it in DxDiag.
  • Treating a threshold as a benchmark: a requirements table is a screening target, not a test of your exact scenes and settings.
  • Generalizing from one game: the Hogwarts Legacy figures demonstrate how to read a listing; they do not define requirements for the open-world action-RPG genre.
  • Buying before locating the mismatch: identify the failing category and verify hardware compatibility first.
  • Ignoring architecture: a 32-bit Windows installation can fail a 64-bit requirement even when the processor and RAM appear adequate.
  • Counting shared memory as dedicated VRAM: use the dedicated amount when the listing specifies VRAM.
  • Checking the wrong drive: free space on another volume does not help if the launcher is installing to a full drive.

When the answer remains uncertain

Sometimes your PC is close to a listed threshold, the publisher names a broad hardware class, or the page omits a performance target. In that case, give a bounded answer: state which categories meet the requirement, which are below it, and what the listing does not establish. Do not convert an untested comparison into a promise of frame rate.

For a definitive personal result, the missing inputs are the exact game and edition, your complete PC specification, and the resolution, frame rate, and quality level you want. Once those are recorded, the comparison above tells you whether you are targeting the minimum experience, the recommended experience, or a component upgrade that addresses a specific shortfall.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I tell whether my PC can run a game without naming the game?

No. Requirements vary by title, edition, updates, and performance target. Use the exact game’s current official PC requirements and compare your hardware category by category.

Is meeting minimum requirements enough for 1080p at high settings?

Not necessarily. Minimum requirements may describe a lower target. In the Hogwarts Legacy listing, minimum is 720p at 30 fps on Low settings, while recommended is 1080p at 60 fps on High settings.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Where do I find my CPU and RAM in Windows?

Open Settings > System > About. Windows specifications show the edition and version; Device specifications show the processor, installed RAM, and whether Windows is 32-bit or 64-bit.

How do I check free space on every drive?

Open Settings > System > Storage. For additional drives, use Advanced storage settings > Storage used on other drives. Compare free space on the drive that will receive the installation.

How do I check DirectX?

Search Windows for DxDiag, open it, and read the DirectX version on the System tab. Compare that result with the game’s listed requirement.

How do I identify my laptop’s graphics card and VRAM?

Use DxDiag’s display information or the computer maker’s documentation. Confirm whether the adapter is integrated or discrete and compare dedicated VRAM when the game specifies it; do not rely on the laptop’s marketing name.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Will installing an SSD fix a weak GPU or CPU?

No. An SSD addresses storage capacity or an explicit SSD requirement or preference. It does not replace missing processor or graphics capability.

What should I do if my PC is just below one requirement?

Identify the category and gap first. Free space can sometimes be recovered or moved to a compatible drive, but CPU, GPU, operating-system, architecture, and feature mismatches require separate compatibility checks. Published thresholds still do not guarantee a fixed frame rate.

Does Windows 10 still receive ordinary free support updates?

Microsoft’s device-information page states that Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. Check the game’s current operating-system policy rather than assuming normal support continues.

The Bottom Line

Check the exact game’s current requirements, record your Windows, CPU, RAM, architecture, DirectX, GPU/VRAM, and destination-drive details, then compare every row with the minimum and recommended tiers. State the associated resolution, frame rate, and quality target, and treat the result as a screening judgment—not a guarantee. Upgrade only after identifying a real mismatch and confirming that the proposed hardware fits your PC.
