Open the individual demo’s Steam Store page, find System Requirements, and compare its operating system, CPU, GPU, RAM, storage, and extra notes with your PC. Steam Next Fest has no single hardware requirement: every demo sets its own minimum and recommended specifications.
What you are actually checking
Steam Next Fest is a Valve event for trying upcoming games through playable demos, chatting with developers, and watching livestreams. Compatibility is decided at the demo level, not at the event level. A lightweight 2D demo and a demanding 3D demo can appear in the same festival while requiring completely different computers.
For the October 2026 edition, Valve says an eligible game must include a publicly playable demo by the time the festival begins. That eligibility rule explains why a demo is available; it does not create a shared CPU, GPU, memory, or operating-system standard for every participating game.
Steam Support’s guidance is to check each game’s Steam Store page by scrolling to its System Requirements section. Use that page as the starting point, and treat the publisher’s listed details as requirements for that particular demo build.

Quick compatibility check
- Open the intended demo’s Steam Store page from the Next Fest event page or a search result.
- Confirm that the page is for the correct game and demo. Some developers link a separate demo page from the base-game page.
- Scroll below the description to System Requirements.
- Record both Minimum and Recommended entries for your operating system.
- Compare your operating-system version, exact CPU model, exact GPU model, installed RAM, available storage, and every additional note.
- Interpret a match conservatively: meeting Minimum means the demo is worth trying, not that it will run smoothly or launch successfully on every system.
Step 1: Open the correct Store page
Start from the Next Fest event listing, your Steam library, or a Steam search. Select the game you intend to test, then open its Store page. Before comparing hardware, verify the title, developer, and whether the page represents the demo itself or only the unreleased base game.
A developer may publish a dedicated demo page and link it to the main game page. The dedicated page can contain different requirements, a different download, or notes that apply only to the festival build. If Steam shows a separate demo entry, use that entry’s requirements rather than assuming the base game’s specifications apply unchanged.
Check the platform shown on the page
Store pages can list Windows, macOS, SteamOS, Linux, or a combination of platforms. Select the requirements that correspond to the operating system on which you will run the demo. A Windows requirement does not establish compatibility with macOS or Linux, and a Linux or SteamOS entry does not automatically describe every distribution or compatibility layer.

Step 2: Locate and record System Requirements
On the demo’s Store page, scroll below the game description until you reach System Requirements. Record the complete Minimum and Recommended lines instead of looking only for a processor or graphics card. Requirements may be split into separate columns or tabs for different operating systems.
Copy model names and version numbers exactly. “Core i5,” “8 GB RAM,” or “DirectX-compatible graphics” without the rest of the line may not be enough to resolve a borderline case. Also capture footnotes, graphics API requirements, 64-bit limitations, controller notes, internet requirements, ultrawide or ray-tracing notes, and anti-cheat restrictions.

Step 3: Check the operating system first
An operating-system mismatch can prevent a demo from running even when the CPU and GPU appear powerful enough. Compare the installed Windows, macOS, or Linux/SteamOS version with the Store page’s supported version. Check whether the listing requires a 64-bit installation or names a specific platform edition.

On Windows, you can see the edition and version in Settings > System > About. On macOS, choose Apple menu > About This Mac. On Linux or SteamOS, open the system information panel or terminal tools supplied by your distribution to identify the distribution, release, kernel architecture, and desktop or handheld mode in use.

Do not treat an operating-system requirement as a suggestion. If the page supports only one platform and your installation is outside that support statement, mark the result as uncertain or incompatible instead of compensating with faster hardware.
Step 4: Compare the exact CPU
Use the full processor model, including its generation or series suffix. A processor from the same broad family is not automatically equivalent to the model named by the developer. Two chips carrying a similar “Core i5,” “Ryzen 5,” or other family label can differ substantially in architecture, core count, clock behavior, instruction support, and power limits.
On Windows, press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager, choose Performance, then CPU to see the model name. The processor information in Settings > System > About is also useful. On macOS, About This Mac identifies the Apple silicon or Intel processor. Linux and SteamOS users can use the system information view or a processor-information command provided by the operating system.
If your model is not listed, compare it using the exact model and generation rather than a marketing tier. For a borderline result, provide the complete model name when asking the developer or community for help.
Step 5: Compare the graphics hardware
Graphics requirements are often the most consequential part of a demo check. Record the exact GPU model, not merely the amount of video memory or the name of the computer. Also copy any required graphics API, feature level, ray-tracing, shader, or driver note.

Integrated graphics use part of system memory and can behave differently from a dedicated graphics card with its own memory. A computer that satisfies the listed RAM number can still struggle if its integrated GPU lacks the required feature or has insufficient graphics performance.
On Windows, Task Manager’s Performance tab lists available GPUs. Device Manager under Display adapters can confirm adapter names, while the graphics driver panel can show the installed driver version. macOS and Linux system-information tools similarly identify the active graphics adapter. If a laptop has both integrated and dedicated graphics, verify which adapter Steam and the demo will use.
When the Store page names a required API or feature, treat that note as part of the GPU requirement. A card that is faster in general terms may still fail if it lacks the specified capability or a supported driver.

Compare installed memory with the listed RAM requirement. “Installed” means the amount physically available to the operating system, not the maximum supported by the motherboard and not the size of a swap or paging file.
Storage is a separate check. Compare the demo’s required space with the free space on the drive where Steam will install it. Total drive capacity is not enough: an almost-full drive can fail the installation or leave too little room for temporary files, updates, shader caches, and the operating system.
Leave practical headroom beyond the number printed on the Store page. The listed figure normally describes the space needed for that build, while Steam, the operating system, shader caches, and later updates can require additional working room.

Step 7: Read every additional requirement
System Requirements sections often contain information that does not fit neatly into CPU, GPU, RAM, or storage fields. Read the notes below each tier before deciding that your machine passes.
- 64-bit systems: A 32-bit installation may be unsupported even if the hardware is otherwise adequate.
- Graphics APIs and features: DirectX, Vulkan, Metal, shader-model, ray-tracing, or similar requirements can rule out an otherwise fast adapter.
- Controllers: A demo may be designed for a controller or list controller support as an optional or preferred input method.
- Internet access: Online authentication, multiplayer, cloud features, or anti-cheat systems can require a connection.
- Ultrawide and high-resolution modes: A demo may run at a standard resolution while requiring more GPU power for ultrawide or high-resolution output.
- Anti-cheat limitations: Anti-cheat software can affect Linux, SteamOS, virtual machines, or compatibility layers even when the underlying game engine supports them.
How to interpret Minimum and Recommended
Minimum
Minimum is the publisher’s stated floor for attempting to launch and play under the conditions it chose. It is not a frame-rate guarantee, quality preset, resolution promise, or assurance that every driver and background workload will behave the same way.
If your computer falls below Minimum in a major category, expect a meaningful risk of a failed launch, severe stuttering, missing features, or unusable performance. A shortfall in the operating system or a required graphics feature is more serious than a small difference in a noncritical specification.
Recommended
Recommended is the publisher’s target for a better experience. It still does not guarantee a particular frame rate or settings combination across every resolution, driver, patch, laptop power mode, or background workload.
Use the two tiers as a decision range: clearing Recommended generally gives you more margin, landing between Minimum and Recommended calls for realistic settings expectations, and missing Minimum means you should treat the result as uncertain rather than buy or upgrade on the assumption that it will work.

Steam warns that a machine at or near a game’s listed requirements may experience performance or launch issues. If your PC is close to Minimum, close unnecessary background applications, install current graphics drivers, use the required power mode, and be prepared to lower resolution or graphics settings. These steps can remove avoidable bottlenecks, but they cannot turn unsupported hardware or an absent graphics feature into a supported configuration.

Ways to classify your result

When the Store page is unclear
Use the exact CPU and GPU model names, installed RAM, operating-system version, available storage, and relevant driver or API information when asking for help. “My laptop is four years old” or “I have 8 GB” is not enough to identify a compatibility issue.
The demo’s discussion hub and developer FAQ can reveal known launch problems, platform limitations, or fixes. Treat community reports as anecdotal evidence: one player’s result can be affected by drivers, laptop power limits, overlays, operating-system patches, or a different build.
If the page lists a broad processor family or omits a graphics feature, avoid declaring a definite pass. Mark that category as uncertain and look for a developer clarification rather than substituting a guess based on a similarly named component.

A Next Fest demo can be updated during or after the event. Developers may change the build, add a platform, alter performance, or revise the Store page’s requirements. If the download changes or your first result conflicts with the current listing, return to the demo’s Store page and compare the latest requirements again.
Keep the version or date visible in any support request. A community report about an earlier build may not describe the current demo, and a requirement shown on the base-game page may not apply to the separate festival demo.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Using one event-wide specification: Next Fest contains many demos, so there is no single Next Fest hardware floor.
- Checking only the GPU: An adequate graphics card cannot compensate for an unsupported operating system, insufficient RAM, an older CPU, or missing storage.
- Comparing family names instead of models: Exact generation and model matter, especially for borderline CPUs and GPUs.
- Confusing total and free storage: Steam needs available space on the installation drive, not merely a large total capacity.
- Treating Minimum as a performance promise: Minimum is a floor for attempting to run the demo, not a guaranteed smooth experience.
- Assuming the base game and demo are identical: Confirm whether the developer uses a separate demo page and read that page’s requirements.
- Relying on a single anecdote: Community results are useful clues but are not a substitute for the Store page and your exact configuration.
- Choosing an upgrade without the named demo: A responsible upgrade decision requires the specific demo’s requirement and your complete PC specification.
A practical pre-download checklist
- Have I opened the intended demo page rather than only the base-game page?
- Does my operating system and architecture match the listed platform?
- Have I recorded the exact CPU model and generation?
- Have I identified every GPU in the computer and the adapter the demo will use?
- Does the GPU support the listed API and features?
- Is my installed RAM sufficient?
- Is there enough free space on the target drive, with room for Steam files and updates?
- Have I read controller, internet, ultrawide, ray-tracing, and anti-cheat notes?
- Am I treating Minimum as a test threshold rather than a guarantee?
- If a result is unclear, can I provide exact models and versions when seeking help?
The bottom line
To find out whether your PC can run a Steam Next Fest demo, use that demo’s Steam Store System Requirements section and compare every listed category with your exact computer. Requirements belong to individual demos, not to Next Fest as a whole. Passing Minimum makes the demo worth trying, while a near-Minimum system can still encounter launch or performance problems. No hardware upgrade should be selected until the specific demo and the PC’s complete specifications are known.
