To check whether your PC can run a Bethesda game, identify the exact game and edition, open that title’s current Bethesda PC-requirements page, and compare every listed requirement with your computer. Use Windows DxDiag to collect your operating-system version, processor, memory, graphics hardware, DirectX information and available storage. Check minimum and recommended specifications separately: meeting minimum is only a compatibility screen, not a promise of smooth performance.
Bethesda publishes different requirements for games and editions. Original Skyrim, Skyrim Special Edition, Fallout 4 and Starfield each have their own lists, and Starfield additionally requires an SSD. Recheck the chosen title’s official page before installing because requirements and support details can change.
1. Start with the exact game and edition
“A Bethesda game” is not a single hardware target. The original Skyrim and Skyrim Special Edition have different specifications, while Fallout 4 and Starfield publish separate requirement lists. The edition shown in your library, store listing or installer must match the requirements page you use.
Bethesda’s pages reviewed on October 13, 2026 generally did not display an original publication year. Treat their figures as title-specific specifications, not as independent benchmark results or guarantees of a particular frame rate.

Why the edition matters
- Original Skyrim: Bethesda lists lower and otherwise different requirements from the Special Edition page.
- Skyrim Special Edition: Bethesda publishes its own minimum and recommended CPU and GPU examples, 8 GB of RAM, 12 GB of free disk space and a 64-bit Windows requirement.
- Fallout 4: Its page has separate minimum and recommended CPU and GPU examples, 8 GB of RAM, 30 GB of free disk space and a 64-bit Windows requirement. Bethesda’s installation guidance also says internet access and a free Steam account are required.
- Starfield: Its requirements include 16 GB of RAM, DirectX 12, 125 GB of available storage and an SSD at both minimum and recommended levels.
Do not copy a requirement from one title to another. For example, an 8 GB requirement on an older game does not establish what a newer game needs.
2. Find the official PC requirements
Search Bethesda Support for the exact title and edition, then open the current PC requirements page rather than a forum post, old launcher article or third-party system checker. Confirm that the page names the same edition you intend to play.
The old Bethesda.net launcher support article is not a current compatibility checker: Bethesda says that launcher ceased use on May 11, 2022. Use the game’s current support page instead.
Record both requirement levels
Copy the minimum and recommended lines into a note or spreadsheet. Keep each category separate:
- Supported Windows version or build
- Processor model
- Installed memory (RAM)
- Graphics processor and any stated video-memory detail
- DirectX version or other software requirement
- Free storage capacity and, when specified, storage type such as SSD
- Additional conditions such as broadband internet or an account needed for installation
If a page does not state a value for one of these categories, mark it as not stated instead of filling the gap with an assumption. Requirements for an older page may also list Windows versions that are no longer the current supported versions for other games; do not generalize them across the catalog.
Save the page or note its access date if you are checking before a later purchase. Publishers can revise support language, and a store’s automated “can I run it” badge may lag behind the official list. The official page remains the authority for the edition you own.
3. Use DxDiag to capture your PC’s specifications
Windows includes DxDiag, a diagnostic utility that displays system information and can save a report for comparison or support. Bethesda’s Skyrim Special Edition instructions use this procedure, and its Fallout 4 compatibility guidance also directs players to DxDiag.

- Press Windows+R to open the Run box.
- Type
DxDiagand press Enter. - Allow the diagnostic tool to finish checking your system if it displays a progress message.
- Read the operating-system, processor and memory information in the system details.
- Review the display information for the graphics processor, driver details and DirectX information shown by the tool.
- Click Save All Information and save the text report. Keep it available while you compare the Bethesda list, or attach it when Bethesda support asks for system details.
DxDiag tells you what Windows detects; it does not decide whether a specific game will perform well. You still have to compare the report with the exact title’s requirements and verify free space in File Explorer.
Read the report carefully
Use the processor’s complete model designation, including its generation or suffix, rather than comparing only “Intel” or “Ryzen.” In the Display tabs, note every adapter if the computer has integrated and discrete graphics. The adapter listed first is not automatically the one a game will use. Record the driver date and version as well, because an old driver can explain poor performance even when the model passes the specification check.
Check storage separately
Open File Explorer, select the drive where you plan to install the game, and check the available space rather than the drive’s advertised total capacity. Leave room for the installation process, updates and your operating system. If the requirement specifies an SSD, confirm that the installation location is an SSD, not merely that another drive in the computer is one. On a multi-drive PC, a game installed on a hard-disk drive does not satisfy an SSD-only requirement simply because the system also contains an SSD.
4. Compare your PC with Bethesda’s list
Compare like with like. A processor should be compared with the listed processor class, RAM with RAM, and the actual graphics processor with the listed graphics examples. Do not treat a newer-sounding product name as proof that it is faster; use the model detected by DxDiag and consult the manufacturer’s specifications if the match is unclear.
Recommended Free Tools
Use this comparison checklist
- Operating system: Your Windows edition and version must satisfy the game’s stated requirement. A 64-bit requirement is different from merely having a recent Windows release.
- CPU: Compare the exact processor model, not just the brand or clock speed.
- RAM: Installed memory must meet the listed amount; remember that Windows and other programs also consume memory.
- GPU: Compare the discrete or integrated graphics processor with the listed examples. Check video-memory information when Bethesda provides it.
- DirectX: Confirm the required DirectX version is available on your Windows installation.
- Storage: Confirm both the required free capacity and any required drive type.
- Internet or account: Follow installation requirements such as broadband access or a free Steam account where the page specifies them.
When Bethesda gives two alternatives joined by “or,” you need to meet one listed performance class, not both chips. When your model is not named, avoid guessing from its release year alone: check a reliable manufacturer specification or benchmark comparison, and mark the result uncertain if the comparison is still unclear.
Starfield example
Bethesda’s Starfield PC requirements give the following targets. The values below are Bethesda’s published specifications; they are not a benchmark or a promised frame rate.
| Category | Minimum | Recommended |
|---|---|---|
| Operating system | Windows 10 version 21H1 | Windows 10 or Windows 11 with updates |
| Processor | AMD Ryzen 5 2600X or Intel Core i7-6800K | AMD Ryzen 5 3600X or Intel Core i5-10600K |
| Memory | 16 GB RAM | 16 GB RAM |
| Graphics | AMD Radeon RX 5700 or NVIDIA GeForce 1070 Ti | AMD Radeon RX 6800 XT or NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2080 |
| DirectX | DirectX 12 | DirectX 12 |
| Storage | 125 GB available; SSD required | 125 GB available; SSD required |
| Other | Not stated in the minimum line | Broadband internet |
For this example, a computer with 16 GB of RAM can pass the memory check while still failing the graphics, operating-system, storage or SSD check. Passing every minimum row only indicates that the computer is within Bethesda’s minimum specification; it does not establish a stable frame rate at a chosen resolution or quality setting.

Fallout 4 and Skyrim comparisons
Fallout 4’s Bethesda page lists 8 GB of RAM, 30 GB of free disk space and 64-bit Windows, along with separate minimum and recommended CPU and GPU examples. Its installation support page adds internet access and a free Steam account. The exact processor and graphics models must be read from the current Fallout 4 page because those examples are title-specific.
Skyrim Special Edition lists 8 GB of RAM, 12 GB of free disk space, 64-bit Windows and separate minimum and recommended CPU and GPU examples. The original Skyrim page lists lower and different requirements. If you are comparing the two editions, create two rows in your notes rather than assuming the original game’s lower figures apply to Special Edition.
These figures should not be used to rank games as “light” or “heavy.” They use different release-era assumptions and do not share a standardized test scene, resolution, graphics preset or frame-rate target.
5. Interpret minimum versus recommended correctly
Minimum is the lower specification Bethesda identifies for launching or supporting the game under its stated conditions. It is not a frame-rate target. Bethesda cautions that a borderline system may still experience performance problems.
Recommended is a higher reference point supplied by Bethesda. It can provide more headroom than the minimum line, but it still is not an independent benchmark and does not promise a particular result on every monitor, resolution, graphics preset or driver version.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Classify the result
- Below minimum in one or more categories: Treat the PC as unsupported until you address that specific shortfall.
- Meets minimum but not recommended: The game may be compatible, but expect to evaluate settings and performance after installation.
- Meets recommended: The PC matches Bethesda’s higher listed specification; actual performance can still vary with software, thermals, drivers and settings.
- Requirement not verifiable: Find the missing model or version before buying hardware or installing.
Do not label a game “easy” or “demanding” solely by comparing isolated requirement labels. Bethesda’s pages do not provide a common benchmark or expected frame-rate figure across games.
6. What to do when a requirement is missing
Identify the exact component
A storage shortfall, unsupported Windows version, insufficient RAM and graphics shortfall require different remedies. Write down the failing category and the exact value shown by DxDiag or File Explorer before considering an upgrade. Do not buy extra RAM because a GPU is below minimum, or replace a GPU when the only problem is a full drive.

- Upgrade your laptop or desktop computer and feel the difference with super-fast OS boot times and application loads
- Exceptional performance offering up to 535MB/s seq. Read and 500MB/s seq. Write speeds
- Superior performance as compared to traditional hard drives (HDD)

Verify compatibility before upgrading
There is no universal upgrade that fixes every Bethesda game. Check whether the motherboard, power supply, case, cooling system and operating system support the replacement component. For laptops, the CPU and GPU are commonly not replaceable; an external or internal storage change may be the practical option, but the supported drive type and physical fit must be confirmed first.
Most readers do not need to purchase anything simply to perform this check. Upgrade only after measuring a shortfall and confirming that the replacement is supported. If the machine is several generations behind in both CPU and GPU, a single replacement may not be cost-effective; compare the complete upgrade requirements rather than assuming one part solves all failures.

Starfield SSD case
Bethesda requires an SSD for Starfield and lists 125 GB of available space, but its page does not specify a drive interface, exact capacity to purchase, brand or model. If your computer lacks an SSD, verify whether it accepts the relevant 2.5-inch, M.2 or other drive type before selecting storage. Do not treat an SSD as a requirement for every Bethesda game. Leave additional free capacity for updates instead of buying a drive whose usable space barely equals 125 GB.
7. If the PC meets requirements but the game runs poorly
First confirm that the comparison used the correct edition and that the game is installed on the drive type Bethesda requires. Then follow the title’s own troubleshooting page. Bethesda’s Starfield guidance includes the checks below; they are Starfield-specific steps, not universal fixes for every Bethesda title.
- Confirm SSD installation: Verify that Starfield is installed on an SSD with enough free space.
- Update graphics drivers: Install a current driver appropriate for the GPU detected by DxDiag.
- Disable or test overlays: Temporarily turn off game, recording or chat overlays to determine whether one is interfering.
- Verify game files: Use the platform’s file-verification function to repair missing or corrupted files.
- Check GPU selection: On a laptop with integrated and discrete graphics, confirm that the game is using the intended high-performance GPU. Bethesda specifically includes this check in its Starfield troubleshooting guidance.
- Review power settings: Connect the laptop to AC power and check the Windows power mode so the system is not limiting performance.
Also note the conditions under which the problem occurs: startup, loading, stuttering, crashes, low frame rate or visual errors. Record the game version, Windows version, GPU in use, graphics settings and symptoms before contacting support. A system can satisfy published requirements and still encounter a driver, configuration, thermal or game-file problem.

9. The practical answer
Your PC can be considered a match only after it passes every requirement listed for the exact Bethesda game and edition, including operating system, CPU, RAM, GPU, DirectX, storage capacity, storage type and any installation conditions. Use DxDiag and File Explorer to measure your side of the comparison, keep minimum and recommended targets distinct, and treat any borderline result as uncertain performance rather than a guarantee. If the game performs poorly despite a successful comparison, use that title’s troubleshooting guidance—such as Starfield’s SSD, driver, overlay, file, GPU-selection and power checks—instead of assuming that one hardware upgrade will solve the problem.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use one Bethesda game’s requirements for another?
No. Requirements are title- and edition-specific. Original Skyrim, Skyrim Special Edition, Fallout 4 and Starfield each have separate lists, so open the current page for the exact version in your library.
Does meeting minimum requirements guarantee smooth gameplay?
No. Minimum is a compatibility screen, not a frame-rate promise. Performance also varies with resolution, graphics settings, drivers, thermals, background software and the game’s current state.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →How do I find my GPU on a laptop with two graphics adapters?
Run DxDiag and inspect its Display information for every adapter. If performance is poor, confirm in Windows or the GPU control panel that the game is using the intended discrete, high-performance GPU rather than integrated graphics.
Is an SSD required for every Bethesda game?
No. Bethesda specifically lists an SSD for Starfield at both minimum and recommended levels. Do not generalize that requirement to Skyrim or Fallout 4 unless the current page for that title says so.
What should I upgrade if my PC fails?
Upgrade only the component that fails and only after checking motherboard, power-supply, case, cooling, operating-system and laptop limitations. A storage, Windows, RAM and graphics shortfall each has a different remedy; there is no universal upgrade.
Why can a game run badly when every row passes?
Check the title-specific troubleshooting guidance. For Starfield, Bethesda points to SSD installation, graphics drivers, overlays, game-file verification, GPU selection on multi-GPU laptops and power settings. These steps are not automatically applicable to every Bethesda title.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThe Bottom Line
Check the exact Bethesda game and edition, record your PC with DxDiag, verify storage in File Explorer, and compare every official minimum and recommended category. A pass means your hardware matches Bethesda’s stated specification; it does not guarantee a particular frame rate. Treat upgrades as conditional, and use the chosen title’s troubleshooting instructions when real-world performance does not match the checklist.
