Start on the phone itself: open Settings > About device, then tap the displayed version number. OnePlus documents this as the path for checking for available software updates and downloading one when offered.
That screen is only an availability check for your current device and software. It does not, by itself, prove that your model is included in OnePlus’s announced ColorOS upgrade scope. OnePlus has said that existing devices within the eligible scope may voluntarily move to ColorOS after its official release, but the notice does not publish a complete model list or rollout calendar.
What the OnePlus update check can—and cannot—tell you
The version screen answers a narrow question: whether OnePlus is currently offering an update to your phone, software build, and market. If an update is offered, you can normally download it from that screen. If nothing appears, the result may mean that no update is available to your device at that moment; it does not establish that the phone is excluded from a future ColorOS upgrade.

OnePlus’s notice describes ColorOS eligibility as a limited scope rather than an automatic conversion of every existing OnePlus phone. It says users with existing devices that fall within the eligible upgrade scope will have the option to voluntarily update to ColorOS after the official release. The notice does not identify the individual models, regional variants, carriers, or dates covered.

Check for an update from your phone
Use the documented settings path
- Open the Settings app.
- Tap About device.
- Tap the displayed version number.
- Allow the phone to check OnePlus’s update service.
- If an update is offered, review its description and follow the on-screen download and installation instructions.
The OxygenOS 14 user manual documents this path as the way to check for an update and download it when one is available. Labels and their exact placement can differ between software versions, so use the closest equivalent if your phone’s menu looks different.
Record what the screen reports
Before contacting support, note the phone model, the complete software version or build number, the country in which the phone is being used, and whether it was purchased through a carrier. These details help distinguish a device-specific rollout from a general announcement.
How to interpret each result
| What you see | What it establishes | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| An update is offered | OnePlus is currently offering that software package to your device and market. | It does not prove that the package is ColorOS or that every similar model is eligible. |
| No update is available | No update is being offered to your phone through that check at that time. | It does not prove that your model is outside the future ColorOS scope. |
| A notice mentions ColorOS | The phone or account may be receiving a ColorOS-related offer, subject to the notice’s conditions. | It does not establish that all regions, carriers, or storage variants receive the same offer. |
| The phone is receiving ordinary maintenance updates | Your model remains within its previously committed software-support period. | Support updates are not evidence that the phone will receive the ColorOS upgrade. |
Why an eligible ColorOS update may not be showing
The rollout may not have reached your device
OnePlus has not published a complete ColorOS model list or a universal rollout schedule in the notice described above. A later release can therefore be staged by device, market, or software build. A blank update screen is not a final eligibility decision.

Your country or carrier may be handled separately
OnePlus states for its separate OxygenOS 16 rollout that timing can vary by model, country, and carrier, and that carrier-exclusive schedules are set by the carrier. That statement is not proof that an OxygenOS 16-compatible phone qualifies for ColorOS, but it is a reason to check market-specific information rather than rely on another country’s announcement or a carrier’s general update page.
The available package may not be ColorOS
The settings screen can offer the next update for the software currently installed on your phone. An available OxygenOS maintenance or feature update should not be treated as a ColorOS eligibility list. Read the package name and release notes before assuming that it changes the operating system.
The official scope may exclude your model
OnePlus explicitly refers to devices “within the eligible upgrade scope” and separately says that legacy models outside that scope will continue software maintenance. Until OnePlus publishes a device-specific confirmation, do not infer eligibility from the phone’s age, processor, current OxygenOS version, or inclusion in another rollout.

What OnePlus has confirmed about the ColorOS change
The upgrade is described as optional
OnePlus’s notice says: “Following the official release of ColorOS 17, users with existing OnePlus devices that fall within the eligible upgrade scope will have the option to voluntarily update to the latest ColorOS.” The wording describes an option, not a forced conversion of every existing phone.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Rollback is planned, but the versions are not specified
OnePlus also says: “If users update to ColorOS, they will have the option to roll back to OxygenOS.” It adds that the specific rollback versions will be announced later. Do not assume that every previous OxygenOS build, or the build currently installed on your phone, will be immediately available for rollback.
Existing support commitments continue separately
OnePlus says existing devices will receive updates and security patches during the support periods originally committed for each model. Devices outside the ColorOS scope are described as continuing software maintenance. A maintenance commitment and a ColorOS upgrade are separate matters: receiving security patches does not imply eligibility for the new operating system.

How to verify eligibility when the screen is inconclusive
- Run the settings check and capture the exact message, including the software version and any rollout notice.
- Identify the precise model and regional or carrier variant shown under About device. Do not rely only on a product-family name.
- Check OnePlus’s current official announcements and support information for a notice that names your exact model and market.
- If the announcement is carrier-specific, check the carrier’s software-update information for that device. A carrier schedule can control when an update is released on a carrier-exclusive model.
- Contact official OnePlus support if the announcement covers your model but the offer is missing. Provide the model, country, carrier, software build, and the date and time of your check.
Use a named model and regional confirmation as the deciding evidence. Do not treat an unofficial compatibility list, a forum post, or an OxygenOS 16 list as confirmation of ColorOS eligibility.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What to do before accepting a ColorOS offer
Confirm that the offer is voluntary and identify the package
Read the update description carefully. Confirm that it names ColorOS, check the target version, and note whether the screen identifies a regional or carrier restriction. If it is an ordinary OxygenOS update, it does not answer the ColorOS question.
Protect your data
- Back up photos, contacts, messages, authenticator data, and other files that you cannot replace.
- Make sure you know the passwords and recovery methods for accounts used on the phone.
- Install the update with adequate battery charge and a reliable Wi-Fi connection.
- Keep enough free storage for the downloaded package and the installation process.
These are prudent preparation steps for any major operating-system change; the OnePlus notice does not state a special storage, battery, or backup requirement for the ColorOS option.

Plan for the stated rollback limitation
Because OnePlus has not yet specified which OxygenOS versions will be available for rollback, do not update on the assumption that you can immediately return to a particular build. Save essential data first and read the rollback instructions OnePlus publishes for your model before proceeding.
If no ColorOS update appears
First, rule out a normal checking problem
- Return to Settings > About device and tap the version number again.
- Use a stable connection and retry later if the check cannot contact the update service.
- Restart the phone, then check the complete software version and model information.
- Look for a carrier or regional restriction if the phone was bought through a network operator.
Then separate timing from eligibility
If your exact model and market have not been named in an official ColorOS announcement, there is no reliable public basis for calling the phone eligible or ineligible. If OnePlus has named the model but the update is absent, the likely issue is rollout timing, regional handling, or carrier approval; confirm those details through official support rather than installing an unrelated package.
Do not force an unconfirmed package
Installing firmware intended for another model, region, or carrier can create avoidable software and data problems. Wait for a package offered to your device or for model-specific instructions from OnePlus. The update screen’s absence is not a reason to use a package from a different variant.
A practical eligibility checklist
- Have you checked Settings > About device and tapped the version number?
- Did you record the exact model, software build, country, and carrier?
- Does the offered package explicitly identify ColorOS rather than a routine OxygenOS update?
- Has OnePlus published a notice naming your exact model and market?
- Have you checked whether a carrier controls the release schedule?
- Have you read the current rollback information instead of assuming a specific OxygenOS version will be available?
- Have you backed up important data before accepting a major system change?
The only definitive answer comes from a device-specific official offer or a later OnePlus announcement that names your model and market. Until then, use the settings check to monitor availability, not as a complete ColorOS eligibility database.
