Short answer: It is not. The current Dortania NVIDIA GPU Buyers Guide lists no NVIDIA GPUs as currently supported in macOS, including every RTX 20-series (Turing), RTX 30-series (Ampere), and RTX 40-series (Lovelace) card. An RTX 2060, 2070, 2080, 3060, 3070, 3080, 3090, 4060, 4070, 4080 or 4090 therefore should not be treated as a supported Hackintosh graphics card, regardless of its Windows performance or the features available in NVIDIA’s Windows drivers.

You can still check any card methodically: identify the exact model and GPU core, identify the macOS release you intend to install, and compare both with the generation-specific entries in Dortania’s guide. For an RTX card, that comparison ends with the same result: no listed macOS graphics support. If you need hardware-accelerated graphics, plan around a supported AMD family and verify the exact board against the target macOS version before buying.

What “compatible” means for a Hackintosh GPU

For this question, compatibility means that macOS can initialize the card with an appropriate driver and provide normal graphics acceleration. A card being detected electrically, displaying a basic boot image, or working well in Windows does not establish that it is supported for a Hackintosh. The relevant test is whether the GPU’s architecture has a supported macOS driver path for the release you plan to run.

Three details determine the answer:

  • Exact GPU identity: the complete model, not just a family label such as “GTX 600 series” or “RTX.” The underlying core can differ between cards that share a marketing name.
  • Architecture: Turing, Ampere, Lovelace, Kepler, Maxwell, Pascal or another generation. macOS support is tied to the architecture and driver era.
  • Target macOS release: support can end at a particular release. A card that worked on an older installation is not automatically usable after an upgrade.

The current NVIDIA guide, last updated December 8, 2025, is unambiguous for RTX hardware: it says that no NVIDIA GPUs are currently supported and lists RTX 20xx, 30xx and 40xx cards as unsupported. That is the controlling result for an RTX-based Hackintosh.

ASUS Dual GeForce RTX 5060 Ti 16GB GDDR7 OC Edition Gaming Graphics Card | PCIe 5.0, HDMI 2.1b, DisplayPort 2.1b, 2.5-slot, Axial-tech Fans, 0dB Technology, Dual BIOS
  • AI Performance: 767 AI TOPS
  • OC mode: 2632 MHz (OC mode)/ 2602 MHz (Default mode)
  • Powered by the NVIDIA Blackwell architecture and DLSS 4
  • Axial-tech fan design features a smaller fan hub that facilitates longer blades and a barrier ring that increases downward air pressure
  • A 2.5-slot design maximizes compatibility and cooling efficiency for superior performance in small chassis

Step 1: Identify the exact RTX card

Do not begin with a broad label. Write down the full model printed on the card, shown on its box, or reported by the operating system. Include the manufacturer suffix and memory variant when available. For example, record “GeForce RTX 3070 8 GB” rather than only “RTX 30-series.” If the card is already installed in a computer, use more than one identification method when possible.

Read the physical label

Look at the backplate, cooler shroud, retail label or the sticker on the circuit board. Board-part numbers are useful because two cards sold under the same GPU name can use different board designs. Keep a photograph or written copy of the complete designation before changing operating systems.

Use Windows hardware information

In Windows, open Device Manager, expand Display adapters, and record the complete NVIDIA GeForce name. The card’s properties can also expose a hardware ID. A hardware inventory utility may provide the GPU codename or core, which helps distinguish revisions that have the same consumer-facing name.

Use Linux hardware information

On Linux, a hardware inventory program or the PCI device list can identify the adapter and its device ID. The important output is the exact GPU model and, when available, its architecture or codename. Do not infer the core solely from a series number if the utility reports a more specific value.

Check an existing macOS installation

If the machine already boots macOS, choose Apple menu → About This Mac → System Report → Graphics/Displays. Record what macOS reports, but do not assume that a name appearing there proves acceleration is working. A Hackintosh configuration can expose a device in system information even when the operating system lacks a supported driver.

Step 2: Write down the macOS version you need

Compatibility is always relative to a release. Record the exact macOS version that the machine must run, including its major release and, where relevant, the point release. The target might be an existing installation you need to preserve or the release you intend to install on a new build.

This matters especially for older NVIDIA cards. Dortania gives different upper limits for Kepler, Maxwell and Pascal, so “it worked on my old Hackintosh” is not enough evidence for a newer system. For RTX cards, the release number does not change the current conclusion: the 20xx, 30xx and 40xx families are listed as unsupported across macOS versions in the guide.

Step 3: Compare the card with the current NVIDIA guide

Open Dortania’s NVIDIA GPUs | GPU Buyers Guide and use the generation-specific sections rather than searching only for the word “RTX.” Match the exact architecture and model you recorded with the guide’s entry, then check the operating-system ceiling or restriction shown there.

  1. Locate the architecture: Turing, Ampere or Lovelace for RTX 20, 30 or 40-series cards.
  2. Confirm that the model belongs to that architecture rather than relying on a similar-looking product name.
  3. Read the support status for the macOS release you wrote down.
  4. Treat “unsupported” as a stop condition for graphics acceleration. Do not assume a boot argument, injector, adapter or Windows driver can turn an unsupported RTX architecture into a supported macOS GPU.

For all three RTX generations, the guide’s status is the same: unsupported. The practical check is therefore useful for documenting what you own, but it will not produce a compatible RTX exception.

RTX compatibility by generation

RTX family Architecture macOS status in Dortania’s current NVIDIA guide What that means for a Hackintosh
RTX 20xx (for example, 2060, 2070 and 2080) Turing Unsupported No supported macOS graphics-acceleration path is listed.
RTX 30xx (for example, 3060, 3070, 3080 and 3090) Ampere Unsupported No supported macOS graphics-acceleration path is listed.
RTX 40xx (for example, 4060, 4070, 4080 and 4090) Lovelace Unsupported No supported macOS graphics-acceleration path is listed.

The table applies to the GPU families, not to one particular board partner. Changing the cooler, video outputs, memory capacity or board manufacturer does not change the underlying architecture’s macOS support status.

Can I use an RTX 3060, 3070, 3080 or another RTX card with macOS?

RTX 3060

No supported macOS graphics driver is listed for the RTX 3060. It is an Ampere card in the RTX 30xx family, which Dortania marks unsupported.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

RTX 3070 and RTX 3080

Both are also Ampere cards. Their strong Windows performance and CUDA or ray-tracing features do not provide a macOS driver path, so neither should be selected for accelerated Hackintosh graphics.

RTX 3090

The RTX 3090 remains in the same unsupported Ampere category. Its larger memory capacity does not alter compatibility.

RTX 4060, 4070, 4080 and 4090

These cards use Lovelace architecture and fall within the unsupported RTX 40xx group. No model-specific exception is listed in the current guide.

RTX 2060, 2070 and 2080

These are Turing cards in the unsupported RTX 20xx group. Their earlier release date does not make them equivalent to older supported GTX generations.

Why older GTX advice does not apply to RTX

Search results and older Hackintosh builds often mention NVIDIA support because some pre-RTX families had limited, version-dependent support. Those examples must not be generalized to RTX.

NVIDIA family Highest macOS ceiling stated by Dortania Driver requirement or qualification
Kepler Big Sur Monterey no longer supports Kepler.
Maxwell High Sierra 10.13.6 Requires NVIDIA Web Drivers.
Pascal High Sierra 10.13.6 Requires NVIDIA Web Drivers; the guide identifies a model-specific Pascal GTX 1060 exception.

Even within those older families, the model name can conceal an important difference. Dortania specifically calls out GTX 660 core variants and architecture distinctions among the GTX 745, GTX 750 and GTX 750 Ti. That is why a complete model and core matter. These legacy details explain why an old GTX may appear in a compatibility list; they do not imply support for Turing, Ampere or Lovelace.

How to handle a legacy NVIDIA card you already own

If your card is not an RTX model, use the same three-part check: exact core, target macOS release and driver dependency. A Kepler card may be usable only through Big Sur, while Maxwell and Pascal stop at High Sierra 10.13.6 and depend on separate NVIDIA Web Drivers. Before committing to an installation, confirm that the intended macOS release is below the family’s ceiling and that the required Web Driver exists for that release.

Do not upgrade macOS first and investigate afterward. Make a backup of the working installation, document the card’s exact identity, and verify the support ceiling before changing the operating system. A point release or major upgrade can remove the only driver path available to a legacy card.

Which graphics card should you use instead?

If macOS graphics acceleration is the priority, Dortania’s GPUs | Anti-Hackintosh Buyers Guide recommends looking at AMD families rather than current NVIDIA RTX hardware. The guide names AMD Polaris 10/20 (the RX 4xx and RX 5xx families), Vega and Navi 10 as potential Hackintosh choices.

AMD family named in the guide Examples of the family label How to evaluate a candidate
Polaris 10/20 Radeon RX 4xx and RX 5xx Check the exact GPU, board variant and target macOS release.
Vega Vega-family Radeon cards Check the exact model and target macOS release in the current guide.
Navi 10 Navi 10-family Radeon cards Check the exact model and target macOS release before purchase.

Family-level guidance is not an endorsement of every board carrying that label. A Radeon RX 580, for example, is a possible search phrase within the RX 5xx/Polaris family, but you still need to verify the exact board, GPU variant and macOS release. Treat the recommendation as a shortlist for further checking, not as a guarantee.

A practical decision path

If you already bought an RTX card

  1. Keep the RTX card for Windows if that is where you need its performance.
  2. Do not spend time looking for an RTX-specific macOS patch as a substitute for driver support; the current guide lists the architecture as unsupported.
  3. For a Hackintosh, select a separate supported GPU family and verify it against the target macOS release.
  4. Plan the physical configuration carefully if both operating systems must use the same computer. The compatibility decision concerns the GPU path used by macOS, not the card’s Windows capability.

If you are choosing parts for a new build

  1. Choose the macOS release first, because support ceilings are release-specific.
  2. Shortlist AMD Polaris, Vega or Navi 10 families from the current hardware guide.
  3. Record the exact model, board variant and GPU core for each candidate.
  4. Recheck the candidate in the generation-specific guide immediately before purchase, since compatibility guidance can change as macOS releases evolve.

If you need a specific NVIDIA feature

Decide whether that feature is required in macOS or only in Windows. RTX ray tracing, CUDA workloads and Windows driver features do not establish macOS compatibility. If the workload must run in macOS, an unsupported RTX card is the wrong foundation for the build; if it is Windows-only, keep that requirement separate from the Hackintosh GPU decision.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them

  • Using the series name as proof: “RTX” identifies a product family, not a supported macOS driver. Check the architecture and guide entry.
  • Copying an old success story: a Kepler, Maxwell or Pascal build may have used a different macOS release and a Web Driver. Its result cannot be transferred to RTX.
  • Ignoring the operating-system ceiling: support for an older card can end at Big Sur or High Sierra 10.13.6. Record the ceiling beside the card name.
  • Assuming a model number is unique: the guide’s GTX 660, GTX 745, GTX 750 and GTX 750 Ti notes show why core-level identification matters.
  • Expecting a board change to fix architecture support: a different cooler, vendor, output connector or memory size does not change Turing, Ampere or Lovelace into a supported generation.
  • Buying from a family label alone: even a recommended AMD family requires exact-model and macOS-version verification.
  • Confusing detection with acceleration: seeing a device in system information is not the same as having a supported, accelerated driver.

Final checklist before installing macOS

  1. Write down the complete card model and any reported GPU codename or core.
  2. Write down the exact macOS release you intend to run.
  3. Open Dortania’s current NVIDIA guide and locate the architecture-specific entry.
  4. If the card is RTX 20xx, 30xx or 40xx, record the result as unsupported and stop treating it as the macOS graphics solution.
  5. If the card is an older GTX, check its ceiling and whether NVIDIA Web Drivers are required.
  6. If replacing it, compare an exact AMD model from the Polaris 10/20, Vega or Navi 10 families with the target release in the current hardware guide.
  7. Keep the guide links and your model notes with the build documentation so a future macOS upgrade can be checked before installation.
