To check eligibility, use Motorola’s official software-update page for your country, select the exact phone model, and read its Android upgrade schedule and security-update end date separately. Then check the handset itself at Settings > About phone > Android version and Settings > System updates > Check for system update. The first check tells you what Motorola currently plans; the second tells you whether an update is available to install now.
Eligibility is not universal across a product family. Country, model variant, carrier or sales channel, certification, and rollout timing can change the result, so use the exact local listing rather than relying on a model name alone.
What “eligible for an Android update” actually means
Motorola publishes two different kinds of support information, and they answer different questions:

A phone can be scheduled for a future Android version but not have that release available yet. It can also remain eligible for security patches after its final major Android upgrade. Check both schedules before deciding that support has ended.

Information to collect before checking
Find the exact model name
Open Settings > About phone and record the model name exactly as shown. If the page displays additional device details, note those as well. A family label such as “moto g” is not precise enough when Motorola lists individual devices with different support plans.
Confirm the country or region
Motorola’s support site is organized by country or region. Open the version intended for the market where the phone was sold or activated, not a different country simply because its page is easier to find. Availability can differ by region.
Check whether a carrier or channel is involved
Carrier-sold and unlocked versions can follow different release paths. Motorola also cautions that channel, partner certification, testing, and software-release processes can affect timing. Keep the carrier or sales-channel information available if the listing is ambiguous.

- Open Motorola Support for your country. Find the official software-update or Android-upgrade-schedule page. Motorola directs owners to the country-specific site for the current plan, and its support agents use that source when answering update questions.
- Select the exact phone. Search for the complete model name from About phone. Do not select a similarly named device or assume every phone in the same family shares a schedule.
- Read the Android OS entry. Look for wording such as a next Android version, an upgrade plan, or a release date. This is the information that addresses whether Motorola currently plans a major Android upgrade for the model.
- Read the security-update entry separately. Record the stated security-support end date or status. Motorola describes these patches as fixes for the current Android version, separate from a new OS release.
- Record the region and variant shown on the page. Keep the country, model designation, and any carrier or channel qualification with the result. A schedule without those details can be misapplied.
- Check whether a date is actually published. If the page has no release date, do not convert that absence into a promised date. Motorola Support says: “If the website doesn’t have a update release date for your phone, then we don’t know the release date yet.”
A listed Android version means Motorola’s current plan for that listed device and market. It does not guarantee that every regional or carrier variant will receive the software on the same day.
Check the phone for an update that is available now
See the installed Android version
- Open Settings.
- Tap About phone.
- Tap Android version.
This screen identifies the Android release currently installed. It is a status check, not a forecast of the next release.
Run the update check
- Open Settings.
- Tap System updates.
- Tap Check for system update.
- If an update appears, follow the on-screen instructions to review and install it.
On some Motorola software versions, System updates is nested under System > Advanced. Menu wording can vary by device and Android version, so use Settings search if the label is not immediately visible.
The built-in check answers a narrower question than the support schedule: whether Motorola is offering an installable package to this phone at the time you check. A planned rollout may not yet be released to your device.

What each check can and cannot tell you

Use the checks in that order when helping someone remotely: identify the device, localize the support page, separate OS and security information, and then verify current availability on the phone. Mixing the checks can produce an apparently contradictory answer when the schedule is future-facing but the handset checker is present-focused.
How to interpret Motorola’s dates and statuses
A planned date is not an unconditional guarantee
Motorola describes published schedules as current plans. The company reserves the right to change release timing, and the schedule can move as testing, certification, carrier approval, or regional distribution progresses. Treat a date as the latest published plan for that model and market, not as a fixed promise.
A delay does not automatically mean ineligibility
Phones in the same region may receive software at different times. Compare the device’s exact listing with the handset’s own update check before concluding that support has been withdrawn.
No date means “not known yet”

An unlisted phone is a serious support signal
Motorola’s support page says that availability varies by region and that devices not listed will no longer receive OS or security updates. Check the correct local page and the exact variant first. If the model remains absent and you suspect a regional or carrier mismatch, ask Motorola Support to verify it before making a device-specific conclusion.
OS upgrades and security patches: check both

Common mistakes that lead to a wrong answer
- Using a global or foreign page: A schedule from another country may describe a different sales channel or regional software package. Start with the country where the phone was sold or activated.
- Searching only the family name: Similar names can hide different support commitments. Copy the complete model designation from About phone.
- Confusing launch software with the next OS: A listing can show the Android version installed at launch and a separate next-OS field. The launch version is not itself an upgrade promise.
- Treating security patches as an OS upgrade: A security end date tells you about patch support, not whether another major Android release is coming.

The June 2028 date is a security-support schedule for that India listing, not a universal promise for every moto g96 5G sold elsewhere. The page also cautions that launch dates and support cycles can vary by channel and region. Use the example as a model for separating the next OS from the security endpoint, not as a rule that applies to other Motorola phones.
What to do when the result is unclear
The model appears, but no Android version is listed
First confirm that you selected the exact country and model variant. Then read the security section. Motorola may publish security support separately from a major OS plan. If the page still does not state a release date, apply Motorola’s “we don’t know the release date yet” wording rather than assuming a date.
The schedule says an upgrade is planned, but the phone reports no update
Compare the phone’s region, carrier or channel, and exact model with the listing. A planned release can be delayed by testing, certification, partner approval, or staged distribution. Check again later and use Motorola Support if the listing and handset details do not align.
The phone is missing from the local list
Repeat the search on the support page for the country where the phone was sold. Check the full model name under About phone, including any variant information. Motorola says devices not listed on the relevant page will no longer receive OS or security updates; if you believe the variant is being classified incorrectly, request confirmation from Motorola Support.
The phone shows a different Android version than expected
Use Settings > About phone > Android version as the authoritative installed-version check for that handset. Then compare it with the support page’s launch software and next-OS fields. Do not infer eligibility solely from the Android version installed on another phone with a similar name.

You are checking a carrier model
Keep the carrier name and sales channel with your notes. Two phones with nearly identical retail names can follow different release paths because carrier or partner certification is involved. If the unlocked listing and the carrier handset do not line up, ask Motorola Support which entry applies instead of borrowing a date from the other channel.
You need a firm answer for a specific purchase
Gather the exact model, country, carrier or channel, installed Android version, and the URL or title of the Motorola listing you checked. Support can use those details to resolve a regional-variant question. Without the country, model, and channel, no universal eligibility answer is reliable.
