Sometimes. Metro says a SIM card can be moved between phones, but that does not guarantee that a particular new phone will work with your line after a simple swap. Before moving your MetroPCS (now Metro by T-Mobile) SIM, check that the phone is unlocked and compatible with Metro, and confirm whether it uses a physical SIM or eSIM. Your account’s activation instructions determine whether any additional setup is needed.
When can you just move your Metro SIM?
A physical Metro SIM may work when moved to another phone, provided the replacement phone is unlocked and compatible with Metro and the SIM fits the phone. Metro’s guidance says SIM cards come in different sizes and can be moved between phones; that describes a possibility, not a guarantee for every phone, SIM, or account.
Do not assume that inserting the card completes every required service or activation step. Metro’s activation guidance includes an option for an old Metro SIM as well as setup paths for a new Metro SIM and eSIM. Follow the instructions that apply to your device and account if Metro directs you to activate or update service.
Check the new phone before swapping the card
1. Confirm the phone is unlocked
Metro says a phone brought to its service from another carrier should be network-unlocked. If the phone is locked, or you are unsure whether it meets the previous carrier’s unlock requirements, contact that carrier before relying on the phone for Metro service.

- "Triple-cut" SIM Card can be punched out for the desired size. Universal, 3-in-1 SIM.
- GSM Technology. Compatible with 3G, 4G and 4G LTE devices.
- Compatible with postpaid cellular service.
- No annual contract.
- SIM card only.
2. Check compatibility using the phone’s IMEI
Run Metro’s compatibility check for the exact handset rather than relying on its brand or model family alone. Metro says you can find the IMEI by dialing *#06# or looking in the phone’s settings. Have the IMEI available when using Metro’s check or contacting support.
3. Identify the SIM type
Check whether the phone uses a physical SIM, eSIM, or supports both. A physical SIM is the removable card you insert into the phone. Metro describes eSIM as a digital SIM integrated into a compatible device; setting it up does not involve moving a physical card. Use the setup path for the SIM type your phone supports.

Choose the setup path that matches your situation
| Your situation | What to do |
|---|---|
| You already have Metro service and the new phone takes a physical SIM | After confirming unlock status and compatibility, move the existing SIM. If service does not work or Metro requests setup, follow the activation instructions for an old Metro SIM or contact Metro. |
| The new phone uses eSIM | Use Metro’s eSIM setup instructions for the compatible device and your account. A physical-card swap does not set up an eSIM. |
| You are bringing a phone to Metro as a new customer | Check compatibility and unlock status, then follow Metro’s BYOD activation instructions. The activation path may involve a Metro SIM or an eSIM-capable device, the phone’s IMEI, and plan selection. |
| You are moving your number from another carrier | Follow Metro’s number-transfer steps and keep the old service active until the number is fully active with Metro. |
If you are switching from another carrier and keeping your number
A SIM swap is not the same as transferring a phone number from another provider. For a number transfer, Metro asks for the current account number and a transfer PIN or password. Do not cancel the old carrier’s service before the transfer is complete; Metro advises waiting until the number is fully active.

- Check the basics: Make sure the SIM is seated correctly and that the new phone is the exact model you checked for compatibility.
- Recheck unlock status: A phone that remains locked to another carrier may not work as expected on Metro.
- Use the right activation path: If the phone uses eSIM, follow eSIM setup rather than trying to move a physical card. If Metro directs you to activate service, follow the instructions for your SIM and account.
- Contact Metro if service still does not work: Have the phone’s IMEI and your account details available so Metro can advise on the applicable setup.
What Metro’s guidance does—and does not—establish
Metro’s official BYOD and activation guidance supports moving a SIM in some cases and outlines other setup routes, including old-SIM activation, new-SIM BYOD activation, and eSIM. It does not establish that every existing customer must activate again after a swap, or that every compatible phone will work simply by inserting a card. Use the exact phone’s compatibility result and the instructions presented for your device and account.
