To find out whether Apple considers your MacBook vintage or obsolete, first identify its exact model, model identifier and serial number. Then compare that model with Apple’s current service list and model table. Apple calls a product vintage when it stopped distributing that model more than five but less than seven years ago, and obsolete when distribution ended more than seven years ago. Those categories are based on Apple’s last distribution date, not the day you bought your Mac.
The classification affects hardware service and parts. Vintage Macs may still receive service from Apple or authorized providers when parts are available; obsolete Macs generally lose hardware service, although Mac notebooks can sometimes receive battery-only repairs for up to 10 years after last distribution. The newest macOS listed for your model is a separate software-support signal.
1. Identify the exact MacBook model first
A model family and purchase year are not precise enough. Apple has released several MacBook, MacBook Air and MacBook Pro configurations in the same year, and service eligibility can differ by exact model. Record the information Apple displays before judging the machine’s age.

Use About This Mac
- Start the Mac and open the Apple menu in the upper-left corner.
- Choose About This Mac. Apple describes this as the easiest way to find the name of your Mac model.
- Write down the model name and year or period shown, such as “MacBook Pro (15-inch, 2019).”
- Record the serial number displayed in the same window. On some macOS versions you may need to select System Report or More Info to reveal additional details.
The model name is useful for a quick lookup, but the identifier and part number provide stronger confirmation when two configurations look similar.

Confirm details in System Information
- Open the Apple menu and choose System Information. On older macOS versions, choose About This Mac, then System Report.
- In the left column, select Hardware.
- Record Model Name, Model Identifier, Serial Number (system) and Part Number (system).
The model identifier has a format such as MacBook10,1 or MacBookPro15,1. Apple’s model table uses this identifier and the part number to distinguish revisions that share a marketing name.
Use Apple’s serial-number lookup
Enter the serial number at checkcoverage.apple.com. Apple’s lookup can return the specific model name associated with that serial. Compare that result with what About This Mac and System Information report rather than relying on a seller’s description or a handwritten label.
2. If the Mac will not start normally
You can still identify many Macs without booting macOS. Check these locations in order:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Chassis: Look on the underside for the printed serial number and regulatory text. Small text may require bright, angled light.
- Original packaging: The box label normally includes the serial number and configuration information.
- Apple Account: Sign in at account.apple.com, open the device list, and select the Mac to view its recorded serial and model.
- macOS Recovery: Start Recovery and use the documented Terminal route to display the serial number if the normal system will not load.
A logic-board replacement can make the serial printed on the chassis or packaging differ from the serial currently reported by the computer. In that situation, prefer the serial shown in About This Mac, System Information or your Apple Account because those sources reflect the installed board and Apple’s current record.
3. Understand Apple’s vintage and obsolete definitions
Vintage: more than five and less than seven years
Apple states that a product is vintage when Apple stopped distributing it for sale more than five and less than seven years ago. “Distribution” means the period when Apple last supplied that model for sale, not the date a particular owner purchased it, activated it or received it as a gift.
A Mac can therefore become vintage even if you bought it new from remaining inventory after Apple had already stopped distributing the model. Conversely, a lightly used Mac is not automatically current simply because its owner purchased it recently.

Obsolete: more than seven years
Apple states that a product is obsolete when it stopped distributing the product for sale more than seven years ago. The boundary is tied to Apple’s last distribution date. A model that is just past seven years can move from vintage to obsolete as Apple’s records and dates are updated.
What happens at the boundaries?
Apple’s wording is specific: the vintage window is after five years but before seven years, while obsolete status begins after seven years. The live list is the practical authority for a particular model, so do not infer status from the calendar year alone when the model’s final distribution date is uncertain.
4. What each classification means for repair
| Apple status | How Apple determines it | Typical hardware-service position | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Current or within normal service period | Apple last distributed the model less than five years ago, or a longer period applies under local law or parts availability. | Apple and service providers may offer hardware service and order parts. | Availability still depends on the specific failure, country and stock. |
| Vintage | More than five and less than seven years since last distribution. | Service and parts may remain available through Apple or Apple-authorized providers. | Availability is not guaranteed; providers can decline work when parts are no longer obtainable. |
| Obsolete | More than seven years since last distribution. | Apple discontinues hardware service, and service providers cannot order parts for obsolete products. | Mac laptops may qualify for battery-only repair for up to 10 years from last distribution, subject to parts availability. |
Apple says owners can generally obtain service and parts for at least five years from the date Apple last distributed a product, potentially longer when required by law or while parts remain available. That statement is a minimum service framework, not a promise that every component or repair will be stocked throughout the period.
Battery repairs are a special case
For Mac laptops, Apple may provide an extended battery-only repair period of up to 10 years after last distribution. This exception does not restore general hardware service. A battery replacement can still be refused if the required battery or related parts are unavailable, and it does not imply that Apple will repair the display, keyboard, logic board or storage in an obsolete Mac.
5. Match your identifier with Apple’s MacBook model table
After recording the identifier or part number, open Apple’s “Identify your MacBook model” table and match the exact entry. The table provides the introduction period, model identifier, part numbers and newest compatible operating system. Use the identifier as the primary match; screen size and release period are useful cross-checks.

The newest-compatible field is a software-support signal, not Apple’s definition of vintage or obsolete. A Mac can still run its newest listed macOS while being vintage, and an older model can be obsolete even if it continues to run an earlier operating system reliably.

6. Check Apple’s current vintage list for Mac laptops
Apple’s worldwide service list currently includes these Mac laptop examples as vintage:
- MacBook Air (Retina, 13-inch, 2019)
- MacBook Air (Retina, 13-inch, 2020)
- MacBook Pro (13-inch, 2019, 2 TBT3)
- MacBook Pro (13-inch, 2019, 4 TBT3)
- MacBook Pro (15-inch, 2019)
- MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Mid 2015)
- MacBook (Retina, 12-inch, 2017)
This list changes as Apple updates its records. Treat it as a live service classification rather than a permanent chart. A model may appear or disappear as Apple corrects distribution dates, updates regional records or moves products from vintage to obsolete.
Do not assume every MacBook released in the same year has the same status. For example, the two 13-inch 2019 MacBook Pro configurations above are identified separately by the number of Thunderbolt 3 ports, and other model families can have similar distinctions.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors7. A reliable decision process
- Capture the identity: Record the model name, screen size, introduction period, serial number, model identifier and part number.
- Resolve conflicts: If the printed serial conflicts with the current system serial, use System Information or the Apple Account record, especially after a logic-board replacement.
- Match Apple’s model table: Confirm the identifier and part number, then note the newest compatible macOS.
- Check the live service list: Look for the exact model, not just “MacBook Pro” or a year.
- Interpret the status: Vintage means the model is in Apple’s five-to-seven-year service window; obsolete means more than seven years since last distribution.
- Plan the repair: For a vintage Mac, ask an Apple service provider whether the needed part is currently orderable. For an obsolete Mac, assume general hardware service is unavailable and ask specifically whether battery-only service remains possible.
- Decide on software: Compare your installed system with Apple’s newest-compatible entry. If the Mac cannot run current security updates, include that limitation in your replacement or repair decision.
8. How to use the newest compatible macOS as an age signal
Software compatibility often matters more than the label on Apple’s service list. A Mac limited to macOS High Sierra 10.13.6 or OS X El Capitan 10.11.6, for example, cannot receive the same operating-system features and security support as a Mac that can run Monterey or a newer release.
Check the model table rather than relying on the operating system currently installed. An owner may have deliberately kept an older macOS for compatibility, while another Mac may be running a newer system through an unsupported workaround. Apple’s table describes the supported ceiling for the exact model.
- For routine work: Check whether the applications and browsers you need still support the Mac’s newest compatible system.
- For sensitive data: Consider the security-update status of that operating system, not just whether the Mac boots.
- For upgrades: Do not treat an unofficial installer as evidence that Apple supports the model; compare against Apple’s listed compatibility.
9. Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Using the purchase date
Buying a machine recently does not reset Apple’s service clock. Apple measures from last distribution of the model. Keep the purchase date for warranty or ownership records, but use Apple’s model and distribution records for vintage or obsolete status.

Assuming vintage means no service
Vintage is not the same as obsolete. Service may still be possible during the vintage period, but parts availability is decisive. Call before shipping the Mac or paying for diagnosis.
Assuming obsolete means every repair is impossible
Apple stops general hardware service and provider-ordered parts for obsolete products, but a Mac laptop may still qualify for battery-only repair for up to 10 years from last distribution. Ask about the specific battery and region rather than assuming either outcome.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.10. Troubleshooting identification problems
The Mac shows a different model than the label
Use System Information’s model identifier and part number as the tie-breaker. If the logic board was replaced, the current system serial can legitimately differ from the chassis or box serial. Verify the current serial through Apple’s system information or account record.
The serial-number lookup returns no useful result
Check each character carefully, especially zero versus the letter O and one versus the letter I. Try the serial shown in System Information rather than a label that may belong to a replaced board. If the Mac cannot start, use the underside, packaging, Apple Account or Recovery alternatives.

The model is absent from the current service list
Absence alone does not prove that a product is current or obsolete. Confirm the exact identifier, check whether Apple lists the product under a different family name, and ask an Apple service provider to verify parts ordering for the specific repair. Lists can change as Apple updates records.
A provider says a vintage repair is unavailable
Apple’s vintage category permits service only when parts and local support remain available. Ask whether the limitation is a missing part, a regional restriction or a repair type that Apple no longer offers. A different authorized provider may have access to the same policy but cannot bypass Apple’s parts supply.
11. What to gather before contacting Apple or a service provider
- Model name and screen size.
- Introduction period shown by Apple.
- Model identifier and part number.
- Current system serial number.
- Description of the fault, including whether the Mac powers on and charges.
- Current macOS version and the newest compatible version from Apple’s table.
- Country or region where the repair will take place.
- Any evidence of a logic-board, display or battery replacement.
Providing these details prevents a provider from quoting service for the wrong revision and makes it easier to distinguish a general hardware request from a battery-only request.
12. When replacement is more practical than repair
Apple’s status is one part of the decision. A vintage Mac with an available battery and a minor repair may remain useful, while an obsolete Mac with multiple failing components may cost more to restore than its capabilities justify. Compare the repair estimate with the machine’s software ceiling, application requirements, battery condition and data-protection needs.
Replacement deserves priority when the Mac cannot run the operating system or browser required for essential work, when security updates are no longer available for its supported system, or when several unrelated components are failing. If the Mac still meets your needs and the required part is available, vintage status alone is not a reason to discard it.
13. A concise checklist
- Open Apple menu > About This Mac.
- Record the model name and serial number.
- Open Apple menu > System Information > Hardware.
- Record the model identifier and part number.
- Verify the serial at checkcoverage.apple.com.
- If the Mac will not start, check its underside, packaging, Apple Account or macOS Recovery.
- Match the identifier with Apple’s “Identify your MacBook model” table.
- Note the newest compatible macOS.
- Check Apple’s current vintage and obsolete service list.
- For vintage models, confirm parts availability before authorizing work.
- For obsolete Mac laptops, ask specifically about battery-only service and its 10-year limit.
Bottom line
Apple’s answer depends on the exact MacBook model and Apple’s last distribution date. Identify the machine with About This Mac and System Information, verify the identifier and serial, then check Apple’s live service classification and newest-compatible-macOS entry. Vintage means more than five but less than seven years since last distribution; obsolete means more than seven years. Vintage service may still be available, while obsolete Macs generally lose hardware service, with a possible battery-only exception for Mac laptops for up to 10 years when parts remain available.
