To check your Mac’s Apple coverage, open Apple menu > System Settings > General > AppleCare & Warranty and select the Mac. You can also use Apple’s online coverage checker or sign in to My Support and choose the device. These checks show coverage and support eligibility, but they do not guarantee that a particular fault will be repaired for free—or that Apple still services an older model. If the purchase date or coverage expiry looks wrong, locate your original sales receipt before requesting a correction.
It helps to treat “eligible for hardware service” as three separate questions: whether a warranty or AppleCare plan is active, whether Apple still supports that model, and whether the specific damage or fault qualifies for covered repair. A coverage lookup answers the first question most directly. Apple or an authorised provider may need more information or an inspection to resolve the others.
Check coverage on your Mac, online, or in My Support
Use one of these routes to find the coverage record associated with your Mac. The on-device route is usually the quickest when you can sign in to the Mac; the browser routes are useful if the Mac is unavailable or you want to check its support details from another device.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute| Route | Where to go | What it can show |
|---|---|---|
| On the Mac | Apple menu > System Settings > General > AppleCare & Warranty | Select the Mac to see its coverage information. |
| Apple coverage checker | Open Apple’s online coverage checker and follow the prompts. | Whether the Mac is covered by Apple’s Limited Warranty or an AppleCare plan. |
| My Support | Sign in with the Apple Account associated with the Mac and select the device. | Support eligibility, including hardware repairs and technical support; proof of coverage may also be available. |
The best route depends on what you have access to. If the Mac is working and in front of you, System Settings offers a direct device-level lookup. If you are checking from a phone or another computer, use Apple’s online checker or My Support. My Support is particularly useful when you want to see the device associated with your Apple Account and review support eligibility or proof of coverage. None of these routes alone confirms that a particular repair will be free; they establish what Apple’s records say about coverage or support status.

Use AppleCare & Warranty in System Settings
- On the Mac, open the Apple menu.
- Choose System Settings, then General, then AppleCare & Warranty.
- Select the Mac to view its coverage information.
The wording above follows Apple’s current instructions. If you are checking a different Mac, make sure you select the right device rather than relying on the first item displayed. This matters if you use the same Apple Account for several devices: a coverage date for another device does not establish the status of the Mac you want serviced.
Record the coverage status and dates shown, then compare them with your purchase and AppleCare documents if anything looks unexpected. The information is useful for deciding what to ask next, but it is still Apple’s recorded coverage information rather than a final assessment of the fault or repair.
Check in a browser
Open Apple’s coverage checker and follow the prompts. Apple’s repair guidance points customers to this checker to find out whether a device is covered by the Limited Warranty or an AppleCare plan. If you have several devices on the same Apple Account, My Support is another option: sign in and select the Mac you want to check.

Apple also provides a route there to proof of coverage; two-factor authentication may be required to view that proof. Keep the proof with your purchase records if you need to discuss coverage with Apple or a service provider.
In practical terms, use the online checker when you want a coverage lookup, and use My Support when you also want to identify the device linked to your account or retrieve proof of coverage. If you cannot sign in to the associated Apple Account, or the Mac does not appear there, try the coverage checker and identify the Mac by its serial number. A missing device entry is an account or record issue to investigate; by itself it does not prove the Mac is uncovered.
Find the Mac’s serial number if needed
If you cannot identify the Mac in a coverage check, use Apple’s Mac identification guidance or System Information to locate its serial number. Be cautious about using a number printed on the computer’s case or packaging after a logic-board replacement: that number may no longer be active. In that situation, check the serial number shown by the Mac or consult the repair documentation.
This distinction is easy to miss when searching by serial number. A number printed on a box or enclosure can seem authoritative, but a logic-board replacement can mean that the Mac’s currently shown serial number is the relevant one for identification. If the Mac is unavailable or the displayed number and prior paperwork differ, keep the repair documentation and ask Apple which identifier it needs. Do not assume that a lookup failure with an old label settles either coverage or service eligibility.

Understand what an eligibility result does—and does not—tell you
“Eligible for service” can refer to different questions. A coverage check is useful for determining whether Apple’s system shows a Limited Warranty or AppleCare coverage. It is not, by itself, a final decision about the price or outcome of every repair. Separate these three checks:
- Is coverage active? Check the Mac’s current Limited Warranty or AppleCare status.
- Does Apple still service this model? If coverage has expired, check the model’s vintage or obsolete classification and ask about available service.
- Does this issue qualify for covered repair? The answer can depend on the fault, the applicable warranty or plan terms, the service region, inspection, and parts availability.
These questions can produce different answers. A Mac may have active coverage in Apple’s record, yet Apple or the provider still needs to assess whether the reported issue falls within the applicable terms. A Mac whose warranty has expired may still have some service options if the model is supported and parts are available. Conversely, a coverage result does not guarantee that a repair can be completed in a particular location or that the exact part is available.
Apple’s coverage information may not show every remedy available under local consumer law or every additional service program. Apple says its one-year Limited Warranty and AppleCare benefits are in addition to consumer-law rights; the duration and remedies can vary by jurisdiction. For that reason, an expired date in the coverage checker is not necessarily a complete statement of all rights or service options that may apply where you live.
A service provider may need to inspect the Mac before confirming the repair decision or estimate. Service choices depend on where you request service, and parts availability can affect whether a repair is offered. A coverage result is a starting point for checking, not a promise that a particular repair will be free or available.
Think of the lookup as a status check, not a repair quote. The status concerns Apple’s coverage record; the repair decision concerns a specific Mac, fault, applicable terms, location, and inspection. If the Mac has physical damage or a fault that developed after purchase, describe the issue accurately when contacting Apple rather than assuming that all service is covered simply because a plan appears active. The final treatment depends on the relevant terms and assessment.
Fix a missing or inaccurate coverage record
Coverage information can be misleading if Apple’s record has the wrong purchase date or has not yet reflected an update. Compare the result with the documents you have before treating an estimated expiry as definitive.
If the purchase date or expiry looks wrong
- Find the original sales receipt and any AppleCare proof of coverage.
- Compare the receipt’s purchase date and the plan details with the information shown in Apple’s coverage record.
- Contact Apple and request an update to the purchase-date information, providing the original receipt if asked.
- Allow for a delay: submitted updates or repair coverage may not appear immediately in Apple’s records.
Apple says its coverage system uses the purchase-date information available to Apple, so the date shown can be an incorrect estimate. A receipt is important evidence for asking Apple to correct the record. Product registration alone should not be treated as changing the warranty.

Keep the request focused on the discrepancy: identify the Mac, note the date Apple currently shows, and have the original receipt and any AppleCare proof ready. Apple may need the receipt to verify the purchase date. If you have already submitted an update or the Mac recently received repair coverage, the system may take time to reflect it, so a record that has not changed immediately is not necessarily the final status.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Do not substitute an approximate purchase month or a registration date for the original sales record when asking Apple to correct its information. The point of the receipt is to support a change to the purchase-date data Apple uses to estimate coverage. Once the information is reviewed, check the record again and retain any proof Apple provides.
If the Mac is missing from your device list
Confirm that you are signed in to the Apple Account associated with the Mac, then check the serial number shown by the Mac rather than a potentially outdated case or box label. If it still cannot be identified, contact Apple with the serial number and purchase documentation. These checks help resolve an account or record mismatch; they do not establish that coverage is active.
If you cannot use My Support, try another lookup route rather than treating the absent listing as a coverage decision. Apple’s online checker and the Mac’s own settings are separate ways to check. For a Mac that has had a logic-board replacement, use the serial number currently shown by the Mac or the identifier in the repair documentation, not automatically the serial number printed on the original packaging.
If the checker says coverage is expired
First verify the purchase date and plan record against your receipt. If the dates are correct, move on to the model’s service status and ask Apple or an Apple Authorised Service Provider what options remain. Also consider whether local consumer-law rights or an additional service program could apply, because they may not be represented in the coverage checker.
Do not jump straight from “expired” to “cannot be repaired.” Expired coverage means the listed warranty or plan period may have ended; it does not tell you whether the model is vintage or obsolete, whether a battery-only service option remains, or whether a local right or separate program applies. Check those questions independently and ask about the specific fault and location.
Check whether Apple still services an older Mac
When a Mac is out of warranty, its age alone does not settle whether hardware service is available. Apple classifies products by how long ago distribution ended, and classification is model-specific.

| Apple classification | Definition | What it means for service |
|---|---|---|
| Vintage | Apple stopped distributing the product for sale more than five and less than seven years ago. | Service may still be available, depending on the product, repair, location, and parts supply. |
| Obsolete | Apple stopped distributing the product for sale more than seven years ago. | Apple discontinues all hardware service for obsolete products, and service providers cannot order parts for them. |
Apple says service and parts may be available for at least five years after it last distributed a product, and possibly longer or up to seven years where required by law or subject to parts availability. This is not a guarantee that every model or repair will be supported. For Mac laptops, battery-only repair may be available for up to ten years after last distribution, also subject to parts availability; this is a conditional exception, not a promise of other repairs.
The key date is when Apple last distributed that product, not simply the year printed in a model name or the date a particular owner bought it. That is why checking a model against Apple’s current list is more reliable than estimating from the Mac’s age. A vintage classification does not promise that the repair you need is available: service still depends on the product, repair, location, and parts. An obsolete listing, by contrast, means Apple says it has discontinued hardware service and service providers cannot order parts for the product.
Recommended Free Tools
The possible battery-only window for Mac laptops is a narrow exception: Apple says such a repair may be available for up to ten years after last distribution, subject to parts availability. It should not be read as a general extension of hardware service for all faults, nor as a guarantee that a battery repair can be booked for every laptop.
Apple’s currently listed vintage Macs include select MacBook Air and MacBook Pro models from 2019 and 2020, MacBook models, iMacs, Mac mini, and Mac Pro. Do not infer a classification from the year on the computer or this example list: Apple’s lists change and classifications are specific to the model. Check Apple’s current vintage and obsolete Mac lists for the exact model.
If your Mac is near one of the five- or seven-year thresholds, do not calculate its status from the purchase date alone. Apple’s category is based on the end of distribution and its list identifies products model by model. Check the current list and ask about the exact service requested, since available parts and the type of repair matter even when a model is not obsolete.

For repairs represented as covered by Apple’s Limited Warranty or AppleCare, Apple says the work must be performed directly by Apple or an Apple Authorised Service Provider. Independent providers may use genuine parts, but their repairs are not Apple-authorised and are not backed by Apple except where law requires. Before contacting a service provider, gather the serial number currently shown by the Mac, the purchase receipt, AppleCare proof if you have it, a concise description of the fault, and the country or region where you want service. These details help distinguish an inaccurate record from an expired plan or a model-support limitation. Be prepared for the provider to inspect the computer before confirming coverage, repair availability, or an estimate.
Service options, repair estimates, and available parts vary by location and can depend on inspection. If you need a definite answer for a particular Mac, have its serial number, purchase record, plan status, issue description, and service region available when contacting Apple or a provider. Apple’s support guidance and model classifications can change; the instructions here reflect Apple Support information accessed October 9, 2026.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I check if my Mac is still under warranty or AppleCare?
On the Mac, open Apple menu > System Settings > General > AppleCare & Warranty and select the device. You can also use Apple’s online coverage checker or sign in to My Support and select the Mac. Compare an unexpected purchase or expiry date with your original receipt and AppleCare proof.
Can I check Apple coverage using my Mac’s serial number?
If you need to identify the Mac for a coverage check, find its serial number using Apple’s Mac identification guidance or System Information, then follow Apple’s coverage-check prompts. After a logic-board replacement, the number printed on the enclosure or box may no longer be active; use the number shown by the Mac or check repair documentation.
Does an active coverage result mean Apple will repair any problem for free?
No. The lookup indicates what Apple’s records show for Limited Warranty or AppleCare coverage. Whether a particular fault qualifies for covered repair depends on the applicable terms and assessment. Service options, region, inspection, and parts availability can also affect what is offered.
What should I do if Apple shows the wrong purchase date?
Find the original sales receipt and any AppleCare proof of coverage, then contact Apple to request an update to the purchase-date information. Apple says its system uses the purchase-date information available to it, which can produce an incorrect estimate. Updates may not appear immediately, so check again after allowing time for the record to change.
Can Apple repair an older Mac after its warranty expires?
Possibly, depending on the model, service requested, location, and parts availability. Apple defines vintage products as those whose distribution ended more than five and less than seven years ago, and obsolete products as those whose distribution ended more than seven years ago. Apple discontinues hardware service for obsolete products. Some Mac laptops may qualify for battery-only repair for up to ten years after last distribution, subject to parts availability.

Does the coverage checker show consumer-law rights?
Not necessarily. Apple says its Limited Warranty and AppleCare benefits are in addition to rights provided by consumer law, and the duration and remedies vary by jurisdiction. If the checker says coverage has expired, contact Apple and consult the consumer rules that apply where you live.
Who should perform a repair that I expect Apple to cover?
Apple says repairs represented as covered by its Limited Warranty or AppleCare must be performed directly by Apple or an Apple Authorised Service Provider. Independent providers may use genuine parts, but their repairs are not Apple-authorised or backed by Apple except where law requires.
The Bottom Line
Start with AppleCare & Warranty in System Settings, Apple’s online coverage checker, or My Support. Then verify any questionable date with the original receipt, check Apple’s current vintage or obsolete list if the Mac is older, and confirm whether the specific fault is covered with Apple or an Apple Authorised Service Provider. Coverage status, model support, and the outcome of a particular repair are related but separate decisions.
