Run two separate checks before moving an iPhone to Xfinity Mobile: read Carrier Lock in Settings > General > About, then submit the phone’s IMEI to Xfinity Mobile’s BYOD compatibility checker. “No SIM restrictions” means the iPhone is unlocked, but only the IMEI check can tell you whether that specific device is accepted for Xfinity Mobile’s network and activation.
What you need to check—and why one check is not enough
An iPhone can be unlocked yet incompatible with Xfinity Mobile, or compatible with Xfinity Mobile but still locked to another carrier. These are different conditions controlled by different systems:

Use the Carrier Lock field
- Open the Settings app.
- Tap General.
- Tap About.
- Scroll to Carrier Lock.
- Read the exact status shown beneath it.
The unlocked status is “No SIM restrictions.” Xfinity Mobile uses that wording in its eSIM guidance. If you see it, the iPhone is not restricted to a carrier and can pass the lock-status requirement for a compatible Xfinity Mobile activation.

This screen reports only the lock status. It does not test whether the hardware, software, or IMEI is compatible with Xfinity Mobile. An iPhone that says “No SIM restrictions” still needs the BYOD check described below.
If “No SIM restrictions” is not shown
If the Carrier Lock field shows a carrier name, says the phone may be locked, or does not display the expected message, treat the iPhone as locked or unresolved. Xfinity’s guidance is to contact Xfinity Mobile when the result is unknown. If another carrier supplied the phone, contact that carrier and ask whether the device has been unlocked and what requirements remain.
Do not assume that inserting an Xfinity SIM or adding an Xfinity eSIM will remove a lock. A carrier controls its own lock policy; the phone must be unlocked through that carrier before Xfinity Mobile can activate a compatible device.
Find the iPhone’s IMEI
The IMEI is the unique device identifier Xfinity uses for its compatibility decision. You can retrieve it without removing the SIM.
Find it in Settings
- Open Settings.
- Tap General, then About.
- Scroll to IMEI and copy or write down the number exactly as displayed.
Use the phone dialer
Open the Phone app and dial *#06#. The iPhone displays its IMEI on screen. If the device shows more than one IMEI, keep each identifier available; a dual-SIM phone may have separate identifiers for its SIM slots.
Use the IMEI from the iPhone you intend to activate. An IMEI from another phone, a mistyped digit, or a retail box that belongs to a different device can produce a result that does not apply to your iPhone.
Run Xfinity Mobile’s BYOD compatibility check
- Open Xfinity Mobile’s BYOD compatibility checker.
- Enter the iPhone’s IMEI exactly as shown in Settings > General > About > IMEI, or as displayed after dialing
*#06#. - Submit the check and read the result, including any instruction about an alternate IMEI or limited features.
- If the checker asks for another identifier and the iPhone has multiple IMEIs, enter the requested alternate IMEI.
The checker is the authoritative answer for that device at the time you run it. A model listed in a general compatibility list is not a substitute for an IMEI result, because eligibility can depend on the specific phone and its network configuration.
Understand every compatibility result

Keep a screenshot of the result if you are troubleshooting an activation. Include the exact wording when contacting support; “compatible,” “compatible but locked,” and “limited features” require different remedies.
What to do when the iPhone is compatible but locked
Contact the carrier that applied the lock
The carrier that locked the iPhone—not the iPhone manufacturer—controls the unlock decision. Ask that carrier to confirm the device’s eligibility, complete any payoff or account requirements, and process the unlock. Requirements vary, so do not apply Xfinity Mobile’s policy to a phone locked by another provider.

After the carrier says the unlock is complete, reconnect the iPhone to Wi-Fi or cellular data, install any requested software update, and return to Settings > General > About. Proceed only when Carrier Lock shows “No SIM restrictions.” If the message does not change, contact the carrier again rather than repeatedly attempting Xfinity activation.
Xfinity Mobile’s own unlock policy
If the iPhone is locked to Xfinity Mobile, Xfinity’s current policy, accessed October 13, 2026, says the phone must meet all of these conditions:
- It has been activated for at least 60 days.
- It is paid in full.
- The associated account has no past-due balance.
- It has not been reported lost, stolen, or involved in fraud.
Xfinity says an eligible phone usually unlocks automatically within 48 hours after payoff. These are Xfinity Mobile policy and process figures, not a guarantee for a phone locked by another carrier.
For Apple phones, Xfinity says the unlock is delivered through updates while the phone is connected to Wi-Fi or cellular data; there is no unlock code to type. Once the stated window has passed, check the Carrier Lock field again. If it still does not show “No SIM restrictions,” contact Xfinity support with the account and device details.
Update iOS before activation
Xfinity recommends updating the iPhone’s software before activation. Install the latest update offered for that device while connected to a reliable Wi-Fi network or cellular data, then restart the phone. Updating does not replace the unlock process and does not make an incompatible phone compatible; it ensures the device is running the software Xfinity expects when you start activation.
After updating, perform the two checks again if anything changed: verify Carrier Lock and, when necessary, rerun the IMEI checker. A software update can complete an already-authorized carrier unlock, but it cannot override a carrier’s eligibility decision.

eSIM versus a physical SIM
An eSIM is a digital SIM profile; a physical SIM is a removable card. Choosing one does not change the iPhone’s Carrier Lock status. A locked phone remains locked whether you try to activate it with an eSIM or a physical SIM.
Xfinity Mobile decides whether an eligible BYOD iPhone can activate through eSIM or needs a physical SIM. Follow the path shown during signup and activation rather than buying a generic SIM in advance. If the checker reports that the original IMEI is not compatible with eSIM but identifies an alternate IMEI, follow that alternate-IMEI instruction; it is a device-specific activation route, not a statement that every SIM slot has identical capabilities.

- Read Carrier Lock. If it says “No SIM restrictions,” record that the phone is unlocked. If not, identify the carrier that must process the unlock.
- Record the IMEI. Use Settings > General > About > IMEI or
*#06#. Preserve every digit. - Run the BYOD checker. Submit the IMEI and read the complete result.
- Resolve the specific blocker. Unlock a compatible-but-locked device; use the alternate IMEI when offered; review the limited-feature explanation; or accept that an incompatible result cannot be repaired by unlocking.
- Update iOS. Do this before activation, as Xfinity recommends.
- Activate using Xfinity’s assigned method. Xfinity will indicate whether the eligible device uses eSIM or a physical SIM.
Troubleshooting common failures
The Carrier Lock field is missing or unclear
Confirm that you are viewing Settings > General > About on the iPhone itself, not reading a listing or a box label. If the expected “No SIM restrictions” wording is absent, contact Xfinity Mobile or the carrier that supplied the phone. Treat an unclear result as unresolved rather than assuming the device is unlocked.

The checker says incompatible even though the phone is unlocked
That is possible because the checks answer different questions. “No SIM restrictions” confirms only that the phone is not carrier-locked. An Incompatible IMEI result means Xfinity does not accept that device for its network; unlocking cannot correct a network-technology mismatch. Contact Xfinity if you believe the IMEI was entered incorrectly, and verify the number directly on the phone before retrying.
The checker offers an alternate IMEI
Some iPhones expose more than one SIM-slot identifier. Xfinity says an alternate-IMEI result means the initially entered IMEI was not compatible with eSIM, while another identifier was found that can proceed. Enter the requested alternate identifier and follow the activation instructions. Do not substitute an IMEI copied from another device.
The result says limited features
Limited compatibility is not the same as full compatibility. Read Xfinity’s separate explanation for the exact restrictions before activating. If a particular calling, messaging, data, or roaming capability matters to you, obtain confirmation from Xfinity rather than assuming it will function normally.
You reached the maximum number of checks
Xfinity’s compatibility-results guidance says this condition may appear after three unsuccessful compatibility checks. Further random attempts are unlikely to clarify the issue. Use Xfinity Mobile’s support channel, provide the exact IMEI, and explain which result appeared on each attempt.

- Use the phone itself. Read the IMEI and Carrier Lock status from the iPhone you plan to activate, not from a seller’s advertisement, a different handset, or an unmatched box.
- Copy the entire identifier. A single transposed digit can make the checker evaluate another device or return an error.
- Keep both IMEIs available. A dual-SIM iPhone can expose separate identifiers. If Xfinity requests an alternate IMEI, use the one shown on that same phone.
- Record the exact result. Save the wording and any alternate-IMEI or limited-feature instruction so support can see what the checker actually reported.
- Resolve locks before activation. A compatibility result does not override a carrier restriction, and an activation attempt will not unlock the phone.
- Do not buy hardware to solve a status question. The checks require the iPhone and its IMEI; a generic cable or SIM cannot establish compatibility.
These steps also make support faster. Giving Xfinity the exact IMEI and result distinguishes an entry mistake from a genuine network incompatibility, an eSIM pathway, or an unresolved carrier lock.
How to compare the outcomes
When evaluating an iPhone for Xfinity Mobile, compare results along four separate axes:

If any item is unresolved, fix that item first. This prevents an activation attempt from obscuring whether the underlying problem is a carrier lock, an IMEI mismatch, a feature limitation, or network incompatibility.

What the two checks can—and cannot—tell you
The Carrier Lock screen gives a direct answer to “Is this iPhone unlocked?” The BYOD checker gives a device-specific answer to “Can this iPhone use Xfinity Mobile?” Neither check promises that every service feature will work when the result identifies limited compatibility, and neither replaces Xfinity’s activation instructions.
For a phone locked to another carrier, the correct order is to request the unlock, wait for the carrier’s process to complete, verify “No SIM restrictions,” and then activate only after the IMEI checker reports an acceptable result. For an IMEI marked incompatible, look for a different device rather than paying for an unlock that cannot change the network decision.
