Open Settings > General > Software Update to see the iOS version installed on your iPhone and whether Apple offers a newer one. Then check Apple’s current security-release list for your exact iPhone model. Install the newest supported update shown for that model.
There is no single “safe” iOS number for every iPhone. As of October 13, 2026, Apple’s list shows iOS 27.0.1 for iPhone 11 and later, while iOS 26.7.1 is listed for a separate, overlapping range of supported models. Those figures can change, and an iPhone that is out of date is not automatically infected with spyware.
What “vulnerable to spyware” means
“Vulnerable” and “infected” describe different things. An outdated iOS build may lack fixes for a published security flaw, but the version number alone cannot show whether anyone attacked your phone. Apple’s security advisories identify the impact of individual fixes and the iPhone models affected by a release; they do not provide a forensic diagnosis for a particular handset.
Recommended Free Tools
Spyware can also mean different threats. Criminals may exploit a broad web vulnerability, while highly capable operators may conduct a targeted, mercenary-spyware campaign against a specific person. Updating closes known software weaknesses, but a version check cannot independently confirm or rule out an infection.

Apple’s practical advice is straightforward: keep software current. In its April 14, 2026 support warning about web-based attacks, Apple said, “Keeping your software up to date is the single most important thing you can do to maintain the security of your Apple products.” That warning applies to the attacks described on that page; it is not a permanent list of every spyware risk.
Security status depends on two facts together: the build installed and whether Apple still supports your particular iPhone. A newer-looking number on one generation may not be a valid comparison for another generation. Treat the version check as a way to find available fixes, not as a pass-or-fail spyware test.
Check the iOS version installed on your iPhone
Use Software Update first
- Open Settings.
- Tap General, then Software Update.
- Read the line showing the installed iOS version. Record the complete number, including all digits after the decimal point.
- Look for the update status. If Apple offers an update, the screen shows its version and an option such as Download and Install or Update Now.
This screen is the fastest answer to “How do I check my iPhone iOS version?” It also tells you what Apple is currently offering to that device, which is more useful than comparing your number with a headline release intended for a different model.
Write down both the installed version and the offered version before starting. If you need help later, those details, the iPhone model, and the date you checked give a technician a useful snapshot of the device’s update state.
Install an offered update
Back up important data and connect the iPhone to power and a reliable Wi-Fi network before starting a major update. Follow the on-screen instructions, enter the passcode if requested, and leave the phone connected until the installation and restart finish. Return to Settings > General > Software Update afterward to confirm the installed version.
If the phone offers an update, installing it is normally the correct response to a security concern. Do not postpone a security update merely because your phone does not support the newest major iOS line; Apple can provide security releases for older supported lines.
Allow time for the download, verification and restart. Do not interrupt the process by powering off the phone or removing it from power. If the update fails, note the displayed error and check the update screen again rather than relying on a partially completed installation.

A message that your software is up to date means no newer package is currently being offered to that device through Apple’s update service. It does not prove that the phone is immune to every vulnerability. Identify the exact iPhone model and compare it with Apple’s current security-release list and the advisories linked there.
To identify the model, open Settings > General > About and note the model name and model number. Use the model name, not just the iOS number, when reading Apple’s eligibility ranges. Two iPhones can display similar version numbers while receiving different security branches.
If the screen says the device is current but Apple’s live list shows a newer release for that model, check the model identification again and retry later. Release availability can be staged or changed, and Apple’s list—not an old article or another person’s phone—is the reference for current eligibility.

| Release shown by Apple | Model scope stated in the list | How to use the entry | What to do |
|---|---|---|---|
| iOS 27.0.1 | iPhone 11 and later | This is the latest listed major-line release for that model range on the stated date. | If your iPhone is eligible and Software Update offers it, install it. |
| iOS 26.7.1 | A separate, overlapping set of supported models, including earlier iPhones | Some devices receive a later security release on an older iOS line rather than iOS 27. | Install it when it is the newest release Apple lists and offers for your exact model. |
| iOS 15 protections | Devices that cannot remain on iOS 13 or 14 but can move to iOS 15 | Apple’s April 14, 2026 web-attack warning says iOS 13 and 14 devices must update to iOS 15 to receive the protections described there. | Check whether Apple offers iOS 15 or a later supported release for your model. |
The two 2026 entries are not a contradiction. Apple maintains more than one supported branch, and the newest major version is not automatically available to every iPhone. Compare four items together: your exact model, installed iOS version, newest version offered in Software Update, and whether Apple lists that model as eligible.
Read the release date as well as the number. A security release on an older branch may be newer in time than a major release you see discussed online. Conversely, a high major number does not make an unsupported model secure if Apple no longer supplies fixes for it.
Recheck the live release list immediately before acting. Version availability and model ranges can change after the date above, and a later security release may supersede both entries.
Understand what Apple’s April 2026 warning does—and does not—say
Apple’s April 14, 2026 warning concerns specific web-based attacks against out-of-date iOS versions. Apple said that devices with updated software were not at risk from those reported attacks and directed users to update. It also described security-update availability for older iOS 15 and iOS 16 devices.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Read that statement as attack-specific guidance. It does not establish that every phone running an older version has spyware, nor does it establish that every phone on a newer version is free of all possible threats. Apple’s advisory for iOS 26.7, for example, documents particular fixes and affected iPhones; the advisory should be read alongside the release list rather than treated as a universal infection test.
If your phone is still on iOS 13 or iOS 14, Apple’s stated route for the protections in that warning is an update to iOS 15. Whether your particular model can go farther depends on Apple’s current compatibility information.
Do not turn one dated warning into a permanent vulnerability cutoff. Apple may issue additional fixes, retire older branches or publish new advisories. The useful habit is to check the current release list and install the newest supported package, not to memorize a number from a past alert.
Distinguish a software update from an Apple Threat Notification
A routine update recommendation is not the same as evidence that Apple believes you were individually targeted. Apple Threat Notifications are high-confidence alerts for possible mercenary-spyware targeting. Apple says a genuine notification appears in several places:
- On the iPhone’s Lock Screen.
- At the top of Settings after signing in.
- In email sent to addresses associated with the Apple Account.
- At the top of account.apple.com after you sign in directly.
Apple says it has notified users in more than 150 countries in total since 2021. That is a count of countries where notifications were sent, not a count of users, attacks or the prevalence of spyware.
A missing notification does not prove that a device is safe or compromised. Apple does not publish the criteria that trigger these alerts, explaining that disclosure could help mercenary-spyware operators adapt to evade detection. The notification system is therefore one signal, not a general-purpose scanner.
Recognize a fake notification
A genuine Apple Threat Notification does not ask you to click a link, open an attachment, install an app or configuration profile, or disclose a password or verification code. If a message asks for any of those actions, treat it as suspicious.

Do not use a link in an email or text to verify an alert. Instead, open a browser yourself, type account.apple.com, and sign in there. Check whether the alert appears at the top of your account page and whether a corresponding notice is present on the iPhone. If it is absent from Apple’s account site and device settings, do not assume the message is genuine.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Urgency, branding and technical language are not proof of authenticity. The independent sign-in check matters because a fraudulent message can imitate Apple’s colors, logos and wording while directing you to a site controlled by someone else.
What to do if Apple confirms a Threat Notification
- Sign in directly at account.apple.com and confirm that the alert is present. Avoid links, attachments and requests for credentials in the message that delivered the warning.
- Update every affected Apple device to the newest supported software offered for its model. Check each device separately; eligibility can differ.
- Read Apple’s alert guidance and follow its recommended account and device-security steps.
- Seek specialist help if you need to assess a targeted attack. Apple recommends the Access Now Digital Security Helpline for people who receive a threat notification.
- Preserve the notification and relevant device details for the specialist. Do not erase the phone or install an unverified “spyware remover” before receiving advice, because changing the device can destroy useful evidence.
An antivirus app, a version check or the absence of a notification cannot independently confirm or rule out mercenary spyware. A confirmed notification warrants expert assistance even after you have updated.
Update other Apple devices associated with the same person or account as Apple recommends, but do not assume that updating one iPhone addresses every possible device. Keep copies of the alert’s wording, date and the model and version information you recorded, and share them only through a trusted support channel.
Consider Lockdown Mode only for a credible high-risk situation
Lockdown Mode is an optional, restrictive protection for the small number of people who may face unusually sophisticated, targeted attacks. Apple says it limits some message content, web functions, services and connections to reduce the available attack surface. It is not routine advice for every iPhone owner and can interfere with normal features.
Apple says to update first for complete protections. On iPhone, open Settings > Privacy & Security > Lockdown Mode, read the explanation, turn it on, and restart the phone when prompted. Review the consequences before enabling it: some websites, attachments, invitations, calls or device connections may behave differently.
Use Lockdown Mode in response to a credible risk assessment, such as an Apple Threat Notification or guidance from a qualified security professional. Turning it on does not prove that spyware was present, and turning it off later does not substitute for investigating a confirmed alert.
Because the mode is intentionally restrictive, tell people who rely on the phone that some normal interactions may fail. If you are unsure whether its trade-offs fit your situation, obtain professional advice rather than enabling it solely because an iOS number looks old.
When an iPhone cannot receive a supported security update
If Apple’s current list does not include your model and Software Update offers nothing newer, the phone may have reached the end of supported security servicing. First confirm that you recorded the model correctly and checked the current list rather than relying on an old article or a comparison with a friend’s iPhone.

For a device that truly cannot receive a supported security release, replacement is a security decision, not a spyware-removal procedure. Buying a newer iPhone does not itself determine whether the old phone was infected or remove evidence of an attack. Choose a replacement only after checking Apple’s current compatibility and update policy for the model you are considering.
No accessory, repair tool, consumable or third-party scanner is required to perform this version check. If you suspect targeted compromise, prioritize Apple’s guidance and expert support over unverified scanning utilities.

Do not discard or wipe an old phone solely because it is outside the newest major line if you need it for an investigation. Ask a qualified adviser what to preserve first. A replacement can improve future update eligibility, but it cannot retrospectively prove what happened on the previous device.

Installing a random scanner or profile
Mistake: Believing an app, configuration profile or paid “spyware cleaner” can certify that an iPhone is clean.
Correction: Apple does not present the version screen or a consumer antivirus app as an independent mercenary-spyware diagnosis. Avoid unverified tools, especially when an alert asks you to install one.
Using another iPhone as the benchmark
Mistake: Assuming that a friend’s iPhone can install a release, so yours must be vulnerable or overdue.
Correction: Check your own model, installed version, offered version and Apple’s eligibility entry together. Update branches overlap across generations.

- Use Lockdown Mode only when the risk justifies its restrictions, and update before enabling it.
Frequently asked questions
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I check my iPhone iOS version?
Open Settings, tap General, then Software Update. The page shows the installed version and any newer version Apple offers. Record the complete number, including digits after the decimal point.
Is my iPhone safe if Software Update says it is up to date?
That means Apple is not currently offering a newer package to that device. It does not prove the phone is immune to every vulnerability or establish that it has not been compromised. Match the model and version with Apple’s live release list and advisories.
Does an outdated iOS version mean my iPhone has spyware?
No. An older build may lack a fix for a known flaw, but a version check cannot show whether anyone attacked the phone. Targeted-spyware concerns require Apple’s alert process and, when appropriate, specialist assistance.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
What are Apple Threat Notifications, and how can I verify one?
They are high-confidence alerts about possible mercenary-spyware targeting. Check the Lock Screen, Settings, Apple Account email and the top of account.apple.com. Sign in by typing that address yourself; genuine alerts do not ask you to click a message link, open a file, install a profile or provide a password or verification code.
Should every iPhone owner turn on Lockdown Mode?
No. Apple describes it as an optional, restrictive safeguard for the small number of people facing unusually sophisticated targeted attacks. Update first, review the limits on messages, web functions, services and connections, and use it when a credible alert or qualified adviser justifies the trade-offs.
What if Apple no longer lists my iPhone for security updates?
Confirm the model and recheck the current list. If the device truly cannot receive a supported security release, replacement may be a security decision, but buying another iPhone does not itself remove spyware or prove what happened on the old one.
The Bottom Line
Check Settings > General > Software Update, identify the exact iPhone model, and install the newest version Apple offers for it. Compare that result with Apple’s live security-release list rather than a universal “safe” number. An outdated version signals a need to update, not proof of spyware. Verify any Threat Notification directly at account.apple.com, seek specialist help for a confirmed alert, and reserve Lockdown Mode for a credible high-risk situation.
