To determine whether a helpdesk is exposed, match the exact product, edition, build, deployment model, components and configuration to the vendor’s current security advisory. Then use the CISA Known Exploited Vulnerabilities (KEV) catalog to prioritize urgency, verify the result with authenticated inventory or vulnerability tools, apply the vendor’s fix or mitigation, and investigate logs separately for evidence of compromise.
A product name or generic scanner alert is not enough. You need a documented conclusion—not affected, susceptible or compromised—for every instance that can process organizational data.
What “known zero-day” means in a helpdesk context
“Zero-day” is used inconsistently. NISTIR 8011 Volume 4 describes the zero-day interval as the period from discovery until the organization controlling the software learns of the vulnerability and provides a patch. The software remains exposed until that patch is released and applied. In public reporting, however, a vulnerability may be called a zero-day because it was disclosed publicly, exploited before a fix existed, or simply became known to defenders.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFor an operational decision, replace the label with precise facts: the CVE or vendor advisory identifier, whether exploitation has been confirmed, the affected version range, the fixed version, and whether your deployment meets the stated conditions. A vulnerability can be publicly known without being in use against your organization, and a vulnerability absent from a catalog can still apply to your system.

NIST lists four general defensive options during an exposure period: “whitelisting, applying common secure configurations, isolation, or removal.” These are choices to evaluate alongside the vendor’s instructions, not universal substitutes for a security update.
Information you need before checking
Collect the following for every production, staging and externally hosted helpdesk instance. Include systems that are not visible in your normal asset list but can receive support tickets, attachments, credentials or customer data.
| Information | What to record | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Product identity | Vendor, product, edition and major release | Advisories often distinguish editions or modules that share a product family name. |
| Exact release | Version, build number, installed hotfixes and release date where available | Applicability is normally defined by an exact range or fixed build. |
| Deployment model | Self-managed server, appliance, private cloud or vendor-hosted tenant; region and tenant identifier when relevant | A hosted service may be fixed by the provider, while a self-managed installation requires your change. |
| Components | Plugins, extensions, connectors, authentication modules, remote-support integrations and bundled libraries | A flaw may be in an included component rather than the helpdesk’s main code. |
| Exposure | Public URLs, listening services, reverse proxies, administrative interfaces and network paths | Exposure conditions can determine whether an affected build is reachable or exploitable. |
| Ownership | System owner, service owner, security contact and change approver | Someone must authorize containment, patching and risk acceptance. |
Keep evidence such as the software inventory record, screenshots or exported version data, deployment manifests, patch history and the advisory revision you used. NIST treats accurate software inventories as the foundation for verifying update status and targeting assessments. Where software identification supports it, a SWID tag can describe a particular release on a managed device.
Step 1: Identify every helpdesk deployment and its real components
Inventory production, staging and forgotten instances
List the primary service, test systems, disaster-recovery copies, old servers, internet-facing portals and temporary troubleshooting environments. Include instances operated by a business unit or regional team. A vulnerability in a staging system can still matter if it contains production credentials, synchronized tickets or a route into the production network.
Confirm the version from the system, not a purchase record
Read the version and build from the product’s administrative interface, package manager, container image digest, appliance console or deployment manifest. Compare that value with the operating system and runtime versions when the advisory names them. A license record or installer filename may identify a product family but not the patch level actually running.
Map integrations and bundled software
Record mail ingestion, single sign-on, directory synchronization, webhooks, telephony, remote-support tools, storage connectors and marketplace extensions. Check whether the vendor bundles a library that is separately named in the advisory. For containerized or appliance deployments, capture the image digest or firmware revision so a later rebuild does not silently restore a vulnerable component.

Handle hosted helpdesks correctly
For a vendor-hosted tenant, record the service name, tenant, region and provider status notices, but do not assume you can patch the underlying service. Ask the provider for the affected and fixed release status, mitigation, exposure window and any required customer action. You may still need to rotate credentials, disable an integration or restrict an endpoint under your control.
Step 2: Find the authoritative advisory and determine applicability
Start with the vendor’s security notice
Use the vendor’s official security-advisory, product-support and service-status channels. Confirm all of these fields:
- Advisory or CVE identifier and the publication and revision dates.
- Product editions, operating systems, deployment types and components covered.
- Exact affected versions, fixed version and any backport or long-term-support builds.
- Prerequisites and exposure conditions, such as a feature being enabled, an authenticated user being present or a public interface being reachable.
- Patch, configuration change, temporary workaround and validation instructions.
- Whether the provider is still investigating, has declared the product not affected, or has published a final fix.
Read revisions again before closing the case. An advisory may be updated after a component supplier clarifies affected versions or after a workaround is replaced by a patch.
Use SBOM and VEX information for included components
If the issue is in a library or service bundled with the helpdesk, consult the product’s software bill of materials (SBOM), if available, to establish whether that component and version are present. A supplier’s Vulnerability Exploitability eXchange (VEX) statement can say that a product is affected, not affected, fixed or still under investigation. CISA’s software-acquisition guidance describes supplier advisories and VEX as ways to communicate those determinations.
Do not infer safety merely because a generic scanner does not show the CVE. Vendors may backport a fix without changing the apparent upstream version, or may provide a managed-cloud fix that a scanner cannot see. Conversely, a product-family match without the exact build and conditions is not proof that your instance is vulnerable.

Search the CISA KEV catalog
Search the current CISA Known Exploited Vulnerabilities catalog by CVE and product, then open the related CVE record and vendor notice. CISA says KEV inclusion requires an assigned CVE, reliable evidence of active exploitation and a clear remediation action. This makes KEV useful for prioritizing work when several vulnerabilities compete for attention.

KEV is not a complete vulnerability list and does not decide whether your particular build is affected. CISA describes scanning, security research and proof-of-concept availability as events that do not, by themselves, establish active exploitation for catalog inclusion. A CVE absent from KEV may still be exploitable, may be newly disclosed, or may simply not meet the catalog’s selection criteria.
Apply the catalog’s scope correctly
CISA’s binding deadlines apply to specified U.S. federal civilian agencies. Other organizations can use KEV as a strong risk-prioritization input, but should not describe those federal requirements as universally binding. CISA’s July 2026 and September 2026 KEV bulletins illustrate why the catalog and due dates must be checked at the time you make the decision; entries and remediation guidance can change.
Separate exploitation evidence from disclosure noise
Internet scans, a published proof of concept or a news report can justify urgency without proving that your helpdesk was attacked. Look for credible exploitation reporting, the vendor’s indicators and activity in your own logs before labeling the system compromised.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Step 4: Verify whether your local deployment is susceptible
Compare the authoritative range with your recorded build
Make a side-by-side comparison of your version, edition, components, configuration and exposure with the advisory. Record the reasoning in plain language—for example, “self-managed edition, build X, affected range includes X, public portal enabled”—or “hosted tenant, provider states fixed on date Y, customer action not required.” If any required fact is unknown, mark the result unresolved rather than assuming either safety or exposure.
Use authenticated inventory and vulnerability tools
Run approved authenticated asset-inventory, patch-management and vulnerability scans against the relevant hosts, containers or appliances. Authenticated checks can read installed packages and configuration that an external probe cannot. Review patch records and deployment pipelines as independent evidence. CISA’s incident-response guidance notes that automated asset and patch tools detect most vulnerabilities, while rare cases such as one-off misconfigurations and zero-days can require manual scans.
Manually review exceptions
Manual review is appropriate when the product is end-of-life, heavily customized, installed from a vendor appliance, behind a managed service, or affected through a bundled dependency that scanners do not identify. Verify the actual running process or image, not only the intended configuration. Ask the provider to confirm cloud-side remediation when you cannot inspect the host.

A scanner finding is evidence to investigate, not proof of exploitation. A clean scan is not proof of safety if the check lacks credentials, cannot identify a backport, or does not cover the vulnerable feature.

Step 5: Remediate, reduce exposure and document the change
Apply the official fix
Follow the vendor’s current sequence for backup, testing, upgrade, restart and validation. Test integrations that receive or send tickets, authentication, attachment handling and automated workflows. Record the asset, old and new build, change owner, approval, implementation time and validation result.
Use a temporary mitigation when no patch exists
If the vendor provides a workaround, implement it exactly and monitor its effect. Depending on the advisory and your architecture, options may include disabling an affected feature, restricting administrative access, placing the service behind an allowlist or additional gateway, or isolating the instance from untrusted networks. Confirm that the mitigation does not break ticket intake, emergency support or evidence collection.
Remove systems that cannot be updated
When a product is end-of-life or cannot be patched, evaluate removing it from the network. CISA’s KEV guidance directs federal agencies to remove such products and recommends that broader organizations prioritize KEV remediation as well. If immediate removal is impossible, document the owner, deadline, compensating controls and residual risk; do not treat indefinite isolation as a completed fix.
Replace a workaround with the official patch
Temporary controls can age out or be bypassed. CISA advises transitioning from a workaround to the official update when it becomes available. Re-test the service after changing the control and close the exception only when the fixed build and validation evidence are recorded.
Step 6: Determine whether the helpdesk was hacked before patching
Exposure and compromise are separate states. Installing a patch removes the vulnerable condition going forward but does not explain what happened during the earlier exposure window.

Define the investigation window
Use the earliest time the vulnerable build or condition was present through the time the mitigation or patch took effect. Include relevant proxy, firewall, identity-provider, operating-system, database, application, mail-ingestion and cloud audit logs. Preserve originals with reliable timestamps before routine retention deletes them.
Look for indicators and abnormal behavior
Start with indicators published by the vendor, CISA or the applicable incident guidance. Review for anomalous requests to the vulnerable endpoint, unexpected administrative access, new accounts or tokens, unusual ticket exports, modified workflows, web-shell or scheduled-task activity, changed files, outbound connections and access from unfamiliar locations. Compare account and system behavior with known maintenance windows and legitimate integrations.
Escalate when evidence is present
If indicators appear, preserve evidence and invoke your incident-response process while continuing remediation. Assess credentials, tickets and attachments, connected identity systems, remote-support integrations, API keys and other systems reachable from the helpdesk. Do not wait for a scanner to confirm exploitation, and do not assume that a successful update erases evidence.
Classify the result
| Status | Evidence | Required action |
|---|---|---|
| Not affected | The deployment is outside the advisory’s affected conditions or is on a verified fixed release; the basis is documented. | Keep the evidence, watch for advisory revisions and reassess if the deployment changes. |
| Susceptible | The build and conditions match the affected range, with no observed signs of exploitation. | Prioritize the vendor fix or mitigation, reduce exposure where appropriate and continue monitoring for the relevant window. |
| Compromised | Indicators or credible evidence show exploitation or related unauthorized activity. | Begin incident response, preserve evidence, remediate the vulnerability and investigate credentials, data, integrations and connected systems. |
These categories follow CISA incident-response playbook language. They describe the current evidence, not an absolute guarantee that one scan can rule compromise in or out.
Evidence quality: how to resolve conflicting answers
| Question | Stronger evidence | Weaker evidence |
|---|---|---|
| Who defines applicability? | Current vendor advisory for the exact edition, build and deployment | Generic product-name match in a third-party database |
| What is the component status? | SBOM plus supplier VEX or advisory statement | Assumption that an optional library is installed or absent |
| Is exploitation prioritized? | KEV entry and credible indicators tied to the CVE | Disclosure, scan traffic or proof-of-concept availability alone |
| Is the system actually fixed? | Verified running build, patch record and post-change validation | Planned upgrade, installer download or an uncredentialed scan |
| Was it compromised? | Correlated logs, indicators and incident analysis | Vulnerability status by itself |
A repeatable helpdesk zero-day checklist
- Open an incident or vulnerability record and assign an owner.
- List every production, staging, recovery and hosted instance.
- Capture exact builds, editions, modules, integrations, exposure and deployment model.
- Locate the current vendor advisory and note its identifier, revision date, affected range, fixed release and mitigation.
- Check SBOM and VEX information for bundled components.
- Search the current CISA KEV catalog and related CVE record to set priority.
- Run approved authenticated checks and manually validate cloud, appliance, customized and zero-day cases.
- Classify each instance as not affected, susceptible or compromised.
- Apply the vendor patch; if unavailable, implement and monitor the documented mitigation.
- Review the exposure window for indicators, preserve evidence and escalate suspected compromise.
- Record the decision, owner, dates, affected assets, validation and residual risk.
- Recheck the vendor advisory and KEV entry after revisions, and replace temporary controls with the official patch.
What this process cannot tell you by itself
No published guidance establishes a general percentage of helpdesks that are exposed or compromised, and no single catalog or scan can provide that number for your environment. The result depends on your exact product, release, configuration, exposure and evidence. Keep those qualifications attached to the decision so that “not in KEV,” “no scanner finding” and “patched” are not mistakenly reported as identical conclusions.
