First identify the Cube generation and installed Fire OS build. Amazon uses AFTA for the first-generation Cube, AFTR for the second generation, and AFTGAZL for the third generation. Root checks and recovery options are model- and firmware-dependent. A factory reset erases accounts and downloaded content, but Amazon does not document it as a stock-firmware reflash, downgrade, or bootloader relock.

What you can prove—and what you cannot

There is no single documented root test that conclusively works on every Fire TV Cube generation and every modification method. You can establish the device identity and software context, look for indicators of privileged access, and determine whether access is temporary or persistent. Those are separate questions.

  • Identity and software context: Settings and ADB can show the model family, Fire OS properties, Android level, and enabled features.
  • Root availability: A trusted root-management utility or a shell that demonstrably grants superuser privileges is evidence that elevated access is available in that environment. Neither a management app alone nor an ADB connection proves that root is active or persistent.
  • Persistence: A temporary exploit can provide root until the next reboot. After restarting, the same Cube may no longer expose privileged access.

Treat every result as conditional on the current boot session, exact build, and modification history. Do not use custom launchers, sideloaded applications, Developer Options, or enabled ADB as proof of root; those can exist on an otherwise unmodified device.

  • 18 Month Warranty: When you get the micro usb data transfer cable, you will enjoy 18 months of after-sales service
Generation Amazon identifier Important context
First generation AFTA Different hardware and software context from later Cubes.
Second generation AFTR The generation covered by the documented raven-root temporary-root project.
Third generation AFTGAZL 2022 model; Amazon lists Fire OS 7 and Android level 28.

On a working Cube, open Settings > My Fire TV > About and record the model, serial information, software version, and build details shown there. Photograph or copy the screen before attempting a reset or recovery. A broad product name such as “Fire TV Cube” is not enough to select an image or exploit.

Record the software build

Fire OS updates are delivered over the air and do not arrive for every device at the same time. Write down the complete version and build string, not just the major Fire OS number. Eligibility for a root project can depend on an older, specific build, and a procedure for one generation may be unsafe on another.

If the interface is unavailable but ADB was already enabled and authorized, use a computer to collect non-destructive information:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Connect the Cube with a data-capable USB cable and confirm that the computer recognizes the authorized device.
  2. Run adb shell getprop to display Android system properties, including identifying and software fields.
  3. Run adb shell pm list features to list platform features.
  4. Save the output with the date and the Cube’s serial information.

These commands identify the environment. They do not certify that the shell is running as root.

How to check for root access without overstating the result

Use a root-management utility as an indicator, not a verdict

If the previous owner installed a root-management utility, note its name, version, and whether it reports an active superuser service. An installed utility can be leftover software, disabled, incompatible with the current build, or present without a working privileged daemon. Record what it reports during the current boot, then verify whether the result survives a normal restart.

Look for a demonstrably privileged shell

A shell opened by a model-specific, trusted procedure that can perform an operation requiring superuser privileges is stronger evidence than an app icon. Capture the exact command output and the conditions under which it worked. Do not assume that a shell prompt, an ADB connection, or the ability to read ordinary system properties means the session is privileged.

The available documentation does not establish one universal command that proves root on every Cube generation and root method. Avoid copying a generic phone-root tutorial or treating a failed command as proof that the device was never rooted; access may be temporary, blocked by the current build, or removed after reboot.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Test persistence across a controlled reboot

Only perform this test after saving the build information and any important data. If a project says its root is temporary, restart the Cube normally and repeat the same check. Root that disappears after reboot is a temporary session state, not persistent modification. Root that remains available still does not identify which partitions were changed or whether the bootloader is unlocked.

Temporary root versus persistent modification

The documented raven-root project targets the second-generation Cube. Its README describes access loaded from a connected computer, running in memory without modifying the Cube, and requiring the exploit to be loaded again after a reboot. That means a second-generation Cube can appear rooted during one session and return to an unprivileged state after restarting.

This distinction matters when diagnosing a device. A reboot can remove temporary access without restoring files that a different modification may have changed. Conversely, the absence of a root prompt after reboot does not prove that every partition is stock. Keep the project name, generation, build, boot state, and the date of each test together in your notes.

Factory reset, OTA update, and firmware recovery are different actions

Action What it addresses Data impact Is stock-firmware restoration established?
Settings or ADB inspection Identifies device and software context. No data erasure from the inspection itself. No. These are diagnostic checks.
Amazon factory reset Erases device settings, account information, and downloaded content. Yes; user data is removed. No. Amazon documents an erase/reset, not a reflash, downgrade, or relock.
Amazon OTA update Installs software when Amazon makes an update available to that device. Not specified as a factory reset. No. The update documentation does not say that OTA reverses root or repairs modified partitions.
Model-specific recovery or reflash May address altered or damaged firmware. Depends on the exact procedure. No universal procedure is established across Cube generations.

How to perform Amazon’s factory reset

Use this only when you want to erase the Cube and understand that it is not a guaranteed stock-firmware reinstall. Remove any needed account data or downloaded content first.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Reset from the Fire TV interface

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select My Fire TV.
  3. Choose Reset to Factory Defaults.
  4. Read the warning, then confirm the reset.
  5. Leave the Cube connected to power while it erases data and restarts.

Amazon says the process deletes account information and downloaded content. It does not promise to restore original system or recovery partitions, roll back the Fire OS build, or relock a modified bootloader.

Reset with the remote when the interface is unusable

  1. Power the Cube and keep the remote within range.
  2. Press and hold Volume Down and Mute together.
  3. Continue holding for about 40 seconds, until the Cube’s light flashes blue.
  4. Follow the on-screen confirmation and setup process if it appears.

If the Cube never reaches the reset screen, do not interpret that failure as evidence of root. It may indicate a boot, remote, power, or hardware problem.

Why an OTA update is not a root-removal plan

Amazon’s Fire OS overview explains that software updates roll out at different times to different devices. Availability of an update does not establish that installing it will undo a root modification, replace altered boot or recovery partitions, or repair a soft-bricked Cube. An OTA package may also refuse to install when expected system files or verification data no longer match.

Do not repeatedly force updates on a modified device in the hope that one will make it stock. First document the model identifier, complete build, boot behavior, and modification history. If the Cube still boots normally, preserve those details before experimenting.

When you need a model-specific reflash or repair

If the Cube has an unlocked bootloader, modified boot or recovery partitions, an authentication error, or no normal boot, a factory reset is not an adequate recovery prescription. The available official material does not provide one supported stock-image download and reflash path for every generation. Use instructions expressly written for the exact model and build, or contact Amazon support with the identifier and software history.

  • Do not flash an image merely because its filename contains “Fire TV” or “Cube.”
  • Do not cross-flash AFTA, AFTR, and AFTGAZL images.
  • Do not assume a third-generation Fire OS 7 image applies to a first- or second-generation Cube.
  • Do not erase a device before recording the build and modification details that a repair specialist may need.

Second-generation warning: the documented raven-root procedure

The raven-root repository is specifically for the Fire TV Cube 2nd generation, not a general recovery method for all Cubes. Its README describes a computer-assisted temporary unlock, a micro-USB cable, and DFU-entry hardware. It also lists compatibility with a stated older Fire OS condition; that eligibility may not match the build currently installed on your device.

The project maintainer, Pro-me3us, gives this warning in the README: “DO NOT FLASH ANY MODIFIED IMAGES, OR INSTALL MAGISK THROUGH TWRP! This will cause an authentication error / soft brick when rebooting without the exploit present.” That warning applies to the project’s temporary second-generation procedure. It is not evidence that every root method or every Cube generation behaves identically.

Do not turn the project’s boot-mode instructions into a generic stock-recovery recipe. If you are following that project, verify the model, build eligibility, required computer connection, cable, and DFU hardware exactly as its current instructions specify. A reboot without the exploit can remove temporary access and, according to the project warning, expose an authentication-error or soft-brick condition if prohibited modifications were made.

What equipment is actually relevant

Micro-USB data cable

The second-generation computer-assisted procedure lists a micro-USB cable. If you need one, verify that it supports data transfer, not charging only, and that the connector fits the Cube and your computer. A cable is a connection requirement; it is not a root checker, firmware image, or restoration solution. No particular product listing is validated here.

DFU-entry hardware

The project also mentions HDMI/I2C DFU-entry hardware. That is specialist equipment and may be DIY. A generic HDMI cable is not established as a substitute. Do not improvise hardware connections from an unverified diagram.

A safe decision path

  1. Stop and identify: Record AFTA, AFTR, or AFTGAZL, the complete Fire OS version/build, and whether the Cube boots normally.
  2. Preserve evidence: Photograph settings, save ADB output if authorized, and write down every known modification and prior owner action.
  3. Check the current session: Treat management-app status or a privileged shell as an indicator, then determine whether it survives a normal reboot.
  4. Choose the least destructive action: Use inspection when you only need identification; use factory reset only when erasing user data is acceptable; use an exact model/build recovery procedure for altered or damaged firmware.
  5. Refuse unsafe cross-flashing: If instructions do not name your exact generation and build, stop rather than guessing.
  6. Escalate when necessary: For authentication errors, soft bricks, or an unbootable device, provide Amazon support or a qualified repair specialist with the identifier, build, and modification history.

Troubleshooting common results

ADB sees the Cube, but no root app is present

ADB authorization confirms a debugging connection, not superuser access. Use getprop and pm list features to document the device, then look for a project-specific privileged result rather than assuming the shell is rooted.

A root utility reports access, but it disappears after reboot

That pattern is consistent with temporary root. Record the successful conditions and reload requirements; do not describe the device as permanently rooted.

The Cube was reset but still shows unusual behavior

A reset removed account information and downloaded content, but it was not documented as a system-partition reflash. Persistent boot or authentication problems require exact model/build recovery guidance.

The Cube will not boot far enough to open Settings

Do not guess the generation from the enclosure alone or apply a random image. Use the hardware identifier from prior records, labels, or a support diagnostic, and seek a procedure that explicitly matches that identifier and build.

An update is available after modification

An available OTA does not prove that the Cube is stock or that the update will repair modified partitions. Record the current state first and follow only verified, model-specific instructions.

Practical checklist before you proceed

  • Generation recorded as AFTA, AFTR, or AFTGAZL.
  • Complete Fire OS version and build recorded.
  • Boot behavior documented: normal interface, recovery loop, authentication error, or no display.
  • Known root or modification history written down.
  • ADB output saved, if ADB was already enabled and authorized.
  • Important account information and downloaded content backed up before a reset.
  • Any cable confirmed to support data transfer.
  • Recovery instructions verified for the exact model and build.
  • No cross-generation image, modified image, or Magisk-through-TWRP step accepted without explicit, matching documentation.

Bottom line

Check the model and build first, then distinguish device identification from privileged access and temporary root from persistent modification. ADB properties and features are useful context but are not proof of root. Amazon’s factory reset is an erase operation, not a documented stock-firmware reinstall. If partitions were modified or the Cube will not boot, avoid generic flashing advice and use only a recovery procedure written for the exact generation and build—or contact Amazon support.
