Before moving service, verify two separate compatibilities: your incoming iPhone must support eSIM in the region where it was sold, and your carrier must support the activation or transfer method you intend to use. An iPhone that accepts eSIM does not automatically mean your plan can move by Quick Transfer.
Start with Apple’s country-specific carrier directory, then confirm eligibility for your exact line and plan with the carrier if anything is unclear. Keep the old iPhone active until the new line makes a test call and reaches the cellular network.
What you need to verify
There are two independent checks. Treating either one as proof of the other is the most common cause of a failed switch.

1. The incoming iPhone supports eSIM
Apple’s general requirement is an iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max, iPhone XR, or later. That rule is not universal for every unit: regional model variations can affect eSIM capability. Confirm the exact model and the country or region where that model was sold before relying on the “XS or later” guideline.

2. Your carrier supports your chosen activation route
A carrier can support eSIM while not supporting every way of installing or transferring it. Apple’s directory separates carrier participation into methods such as eSIM Carrier Activation and eSIM Quick Transfer. A listing under one heading does not establish support under another, and a listing does not guarantee eligibility for every plan, prepaid account, business line, or market.
Step 1: Identify the exact iPhone model and sales region
Do this before checking the carrier. Write down the model you are about to use and where that particular device was purchased or intended for sale.
- Check the model identity. On the iPhone, open Settings > General > About and note the model name and model number. If you are buying the phone, use the seller’s full model description rather than only the generation name.
- Record the sales region. A phone bought in another country can have different cellular hardware or SIM arrangements from a phone sold in your home market. Keep the country of purchase or the device’s intended market with your notes.
- Confirm eSIM capability for that combination. Use Apple’s regional iPhone specifications and support information. Do not treat the broad XS/XR-and-newer statement as a guarantee for an imported or region-specific model.
- Check whether the phone is unlocked. Quick Transfer requires an unlocked previous iPhone. Unlock status of the new phone can also affect whether a different carrier’s line can be used, so ask the seller or current carrier if it is not clear.
If the model or region cannot be established, stop here and get that information before ordering a plan or starting a transfer. Carrier support cannot compensate for an iPhone variant that lacks the required eSIM hardware.
Step 2: Check Apple’s carrier directory by country and method
Open Apple’s carrier directory, choose the country or region in which the line will be used, and inspect the carrier under the heading for the route you want. The directory is the fastest way to distinguish Quick Transfer from other forms of eSIM activation.
Look for eSIM Quick Transfer
Choose this heading only if you want to move a number directly from one iPhone to another during setup or from the cellular settings afterward. If your carrier is absent from the Quick Transfer section, do not assume that its general eSIM support includes phone-to-phone transfer.
Look for eSIM Carrier Activation
This method lets the carrier assign an eSIM digitally, sometimes when you purchase the iPhone and sometimes after you contact the carrier. The carrier’s own instructions determine whether your particular account can use it.
Check other listed methods
Depending on the country, Apple may list QR-code activation, a carrier app or link, or another carrier-specific route. Select the method that matches what the carrier has told you it will provide. A QR-code listing, for example, does not promise Quick Transfer.

Step 3: Confirm your exact line and plan with the carrier
Contact the carrier when the directory is ambiguous, your account is unusual, or the carrier is missing from the method you want. Ask questions that identify the line rather than receiving a generic “we support eSIM” answer.
- Can this exact phone number and plan move to the identified iPhone model and sales region?
- Is eSIM Quick Transfer available for this line, or must the carrier activate the new phone another way?
- If Quick Transfer is unavailable, will the carrier issue a QR code, send an activation link, require its app, or provide manual eSIM details?
- Must the account owner complete identity verification, provide an account PIN, or approve the change?
- Will moving the line change the plan, multi-line group, billing arrangement, or international features?
- Does the carrier require the old SIM or old iPhone to remain active until activation is complete?
Request the instructions in writing or save the carrier’s support message. Activation artifacts can be one-time use, and a support representative may need to regenerate a QR code or link if the first attempt expires.
Understand the available eSIM methods
Choose by carrier support, account eligibility, the type of old phone, and whether you want to transfer during initial setup or later. If the old device is not an iPhone, Quick Transfer is not the relevant route; ask which carrier-issued method supports that device and line.

| Method | What it does | What you must verify |
|---|---|---|
| eSIM Quick Transfer | Moves a number from a previous iPhone to a new iPhone without contacting the carrier during the transfer. | The carrier lists Quick Transfer for your region and line; both phones meet Apple’s prerequisites; the old iPhone is nearby, unlocked, and signed in to the same Apple Account. |
| Carrier Activation | The carrier digitally assigns an eSIM, either at purchase or after a carrier request. | The carrier offers this route for your exact account and supplies its activation instructions. |
| QR code | Installs an eSIM profile from a carrier-issued QR code. | Obtain the code from the carrier and ask whether a confirmation code, identity check, or expiration limit applies. |
| Carrier app or link | Uses the carrier’s official app or web link to install an eSIM; some apps also handle transfers. | Use only the carrier’s official app or link and confirm that it supports your particular line. |
| Manual entry | Adds carrier-provided eSIM information in the iPhone’s cellular settings. | Enter only details supplied by the carrier. Do not substitute values found in forum posts or from another account. |
Compare methods before you start
The quickest route is not always the route your account can use. Quick Transfer is convenient when two iPhones meet Apple’s requirements and the carrier lists the feature. Carrier Activation can work when the carrier is involved at purchase or through support, but you may need account verification. A QR code or app is useful when the old phone cannot perform a phone-to-phone transfer, while manual entry is a fallback that depends entirely on accurate carrier-supplied details.
Also decide whether you are transferring during initial setup or adding the line after the new iPhone is already configured. The available prompt can differ by timing. If you postpone the transfer, keep the activation instructions and any carrier-issued code accessible rather than assuming the setup assistant will show the same option later.
Prepare both iPhones for Quick Transfer
Apple’s current setup instructions specify all of the following for Quick Transfer:
- Both iPhones are signed in to the same Apple Account.
- The previous iPhone is unlocked.
- The devices are near each other.
- Bluetooth is enabled on both devices.
- Both devices run iOS 18.4 or later.
Before beginning, connect the new iPhone to Wi‑Fi or a personal hotspot and install appropriate software updates on both phones. Keep the old iPhone charged and within reach. If the old phone is unavailable, locked, damaged, or running an older iOS release, plan on a carrier activation, QR code, app/link, or manual setup instead.

How to use eSIM Quick Transfer
- Start iPhone setup or open cellular settings. During initial setup, follow the cellular transfer prompt. On an already configured iPhone, open Settings > Cellular (called Mobile Data in some regions), choose Add eSIM, and select the option to transfer from a nearby iPhone if it appears.
- Keep the old iPhone unlocked and nearby. Follow the on-screen request on the previous phone and confirm that you want to transfer the line.
- Authenticate when prompted. The iPhones may request the old device passcode or another Apple Account confirmation. Complete the prompt on the device that displays it.
- Wait for carrier activation. Do not remove the old SIM, erase the old phone, or move it away while the new eSIM is being installed.
- Verify the result. Check that the new iPhone shows the intended line under its cellular settings, place a call, send a message, and test cellular data with Wi‑Fi temporarily off.
Apple states: “If your carrier supports eSIM Quick Transfer, you can transfer the SIM from your previous iPhone to your new iPhone without contacting them.” The same process has an important consequence: “When the cellular plan on your new iPhone activates, it deactivates your previous SIM.” Keep the old iPhone available until you have completed the tests and know how to reach the carrier if something fails.
If Quick Transfer is not available
Lack of Quick Transfer does not necessarily mean the carrier cannot use eSIM. It means you need the route that the carrier supports.
Carrier activation
Follow the carrier’s activation prompt when it appears during setup, or request activation through the carrier’s support channel. The carrier may need to validate the account before assigning the new eSIM.

QR-code setup
Ask the carrier for a QR code intended for your line. On the new iPhone, use the cellular settings’ Add eSIM flow to scan it. Keep any confirmation code or account credentials the carrier supplied. If the code has already been scanned or has expired, ask the carrier for a replacement rather than reusing it.
Carrier app or link
Install or open the official carrier app, or use the activation link sent by the carrier. Confirm that the app or link is for eSIM installation or transfer, not merely account management. Follow the identity checks and keep the old line active until the new one works.
Manual eSIM information
Choose manual entry only when the carrier gives you the required details. Enter them exactly as supplied in the iPhone’s Add eSIM settings. Carrier-specific server addresses, activation codes, and confirmation values are not interchangeable between customers.
What changes when the new eSIM activates
Activation is not a duplicate copy of the old SIM. When the new iPhone’s cellular plan activates through Quick Transfer, the previous SIM is deactivated. That is why a successful-looking setup still requires testing on the new device before you disconnect from the old one.

Troubleshoot a failed check or activation
The iPhone has no eSIM option
Recheck the model number and sales region. A generation name alone is insufficient because regional variants differ. If the device is confirmed to support eSIM, update iOS and restart it before contacting the carrier.
The carrier supports eSIM but not Quick Transfer
Use the carrier’s supported alternative: activation, QR code, app/link, or manual details. Do not keep retrying Quick Transfer or erase the old phone; method support is carrier-specific.
The transfer prompt does not appear
Confirm that both iPhones use the same Apple Account, the previous phone is unlocked, Bluetooth is enabled, the devices are close together, and both run iOS 18.4 or later. Connect the new phone to Wi‑Fi or a hotspot. If all prerequisites are met and the prompt is still absent, ask the carrier whether your line is excluded from Quick Transfer.
The new iPhone shows no service after transfer
Wait for the activation process to finish, then restart the new iPhone and check the cellular line in Settings. Test with Wi‑Fi off. If the old SIM has already been deactivated and the new line remains inactive, contact the carrier from another phone or over Wi‑Fi; do not erase either iPhone until the carrier confirms the next step.
The QR code or link fails
Verify that it was issued for this line and has not been used or expired. Ask the carrier whether a confirmation code is required and request a new activation artifact if necessary.
The carrier says eSIM is supported but cannot find your line
Ask the representative to check the exact phone number, plan type, account status, and destination model. A broad carrier statement may cover consumer lines while excluding prepaid, business, managed, suspended, or recently changed accounts. Request the supported route in writing before trying again.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.A practical pre-switch checklist
- Exact incoming iPhone model recorded.
- Sales region verified, including any imported-device status.
- eSIM capability confirmed for that model and region.
- Country or region selected in Apple’s carrier directory.
- Carrier found under the specific method you intend to use.
- Plan and line eligibility confirmed with the carrier when needed.
- Alternative activation materials obtained if Quick Transfer is not supported.
- Both iPhones updated as appropriate, signed in to the same Apple Account, nearby, and connected as required.
- Old iPhone remains available until calls and cellular data work on the new one.
When to delay the switch
Delay moving the number if you cannot identify the new phone’s regional model, the carrier will not confirm eligibility, the only available activation artifact is missing, or the old phone is your sole way to receive account verification codes. Resolve those dependencies first. A few minutes of preparation is safer than deactivating the old SIM while you are unable to authenticate or contact support.

Which iPhones generally support eSIM?
Apple’s general requirement is iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max, iPhone XR, or later. Regional models can differ, so verify the exact model number and sales region instead of relying only on the generation name.
Can I transfer an eSIM from an Android phone with Quick Transfer?
Quick Transfer is the phone-to-phone route Apple documents for a previous iPhone and a new iPhone. If the old device is not an iPhone, ask the carrier whether it offers activation, a QR code, an app or link, or manual eSIM details for your line.
What iOS version does Quick Transfer require?
Apple’s current instructions specify iOS 18.4 or later on both iPhones. The devices also need to be nearby, use the same Apple Account, have Bluetooth enabled, and have the previous iPhone unlocked.
Will my old SIM keep working during Quick Transfer?
No. When the cellular plan on the new iPhone activates, the previous SIM is deactivated. Keep the old iPhone available until the new phone can make a call and use cellular data.
What should I do if my carrier is not listed under Quick Transfer?
Do not assume general eSIM support includes Quick Transfer. Contact the carrier and ask whether your exact number and plan can move by another route, such as carrier activation, a QR code, an official app or link, or manual eSIM information.
Do prepaid and business plans support the same eSIM methods as consumer plans?
Not necessarily. Apple’s directory shows method participation, not eligibility for every account. Ask the carrier to check the exact prepaid, business, family, managed, or otherwise unusual line before you begin.
Can I erase or trade in my old iPhone immediately after starting the transfer?
Wait. The old phone may be needed for approval, account verification, or carrier troubleshooting, and Quick Transfer deactivates its SIM when the new plan activates. Erase or trade it in only after calls and cellular data work on the new iPhone.
The Bottom Line
Check the incoming iPhone’s exact regional eSIM capability first, then use Apple’s country-specific carrier directory to match your carrier with the method you actually want. Confirm plan-level eligibility with the carrier, prepare both devices for the stated Quick Transfer requirements, and keep the old iPhone available until the new line passes call and cellular-data tests.
