Short answer: check apps and accessories separately. Confirm that the laptop is running Windows 11 on an ARM-based processor, then check the exact app version or accessory model with its publisher or manufacturer. Native Arm64 support is the clearest signal, but many x86 and x64 apps run through Windows emulation. Hardware features are different: they work only when Windows includes the required driver or the device maker supplies an Arm64 driver. An app installing successfully does not prove that every connected device or advanced feature will work.
Start with the five checks that decide compatibility
Use this sequence before you install software, connect a peripheral, or rely on a device for work:
- Identify the platform. Open Start > Settings > System > About. Record the processor description, Windows edition, Windows version and build, and the exact Snapdragon laptop model. Microsoft’s printer guidance says an ARM PC shows ARM based processor beside System type. See Microsoft’s ARM printer guidance.
- Check the app at its source. Search the publisher’s support or download page for the exact product and version plus “Windows on Arm” or “Arm64.” Prefer a native Arm64 release when one is offered.
- List system-level dependencies. Find out whether the app installs a kernel or hardware driver, anti-cheat component, virtualization module, security product, accessibility component, input method editor, or cloud-storage integration. Those parts can fail even when the main program opens.
- Check each accessory by exact model. On the hardware maker’s support site, look for Windows 11 on Arm or Arm64 driver information. A generic Windows installer is not proof of ARM support.
- Test the workflow you actually need. Print duplex, scan, use the camera or microphone, sign in through the security component, or launch the game with anti-cheat enabled. Compatibility is feature-specific, not just an install/no-install result.
Microsoft’s Windows Arm-based PCs FAQ is the governing platform reference. It says most Windows apps run on Windows 11 Arm PCs, while also documenting important driver and feature exceptions.

Verify that the processor is ARM-based
Open Settings > System > About and check System type. If it says ARM based processor, use Windows on Arm compatibility guidance rather than ordinary Intel- or AMD-only advice. Also note the laptop’s processor generation and model; two Snapdragon systems can receive different firmware, drivers, and Windows updates.

Record the Windows release and build
Windows 11 and Windows 10 on Arm do not have identical capabilities. Microsoft’s current Windows 11 guidance describes x86 and x64 emulation and says Windows 11 version 24H2 includes the Prism emulator for improved emulated-app performance. The same FAQ states that x64 apps do not work on Windows 10 Arm. Do not apply an old Windows 10 statement to a Windows 11 machine, or vice versa. Record the build before comparing a vendor’s support statement.
Check whether S mode is enabled
S mode limits installations to Microsoft Store apps unless you permanently switch out of S mode. That is a separate restriction from ARM compatibility. Check Settings > System > Activation for the laptop’s S-mode status, and consult Microsoft’s Windows 10 and Windows 11 in S mode FAQ. A program can be unavailable because of S mode, because it lacks ARM support, or both.
How to check an app
1. Find an explicit Arm64 or Windows-on-Arm statement
Use the publisher’s official support page, release notes, or download selector. Search for the exact product name, edition, and version together with Windows on Arm, Arm64, or Snapdragon. “Works with Windows” is too broad: ask whether the statement covers Windows 11 on Arm and your required version.
The Microsoft Store listing can be a useful starting point, but the publisher remains the best authority for licensing, plug-ins, supported versions, and unusual dependencies. Save the page or version number you checked; compatibility can change with an update.

2. Classify the app’s processor architecture

Emulation applies to application code. It does not turn an unsupported kernel or hardware driver into an Arm64 driver. That distinction is why the app’s dependency check is as important as its architecture label.
3. Inspect dependencies before installing
Look in the publisher’s requirements and troubleshooting pages for components that run outside the normal application process:
- Kernel, USB, camera, audio, storage, VPN, or other hardware drivers.
- Anti-cheat drivers used by games.
- Virtualization, sandboxing, or low-level security modules.
- Third-party antivirus software that adds a system filter.
- Assistive technology, input method editor, or Windows-customization hooks.
- Cloud-storage synchronization software with shell or file-system integration.
Microsoft specifically warns that unsupported drivers, some anti-cheat drivers, some assistive technologies, input method editors, cloud-storage apps, and some third-party antivirus products can have problems on Windows 11 Arm. If the vendor does not state ARM support for these components, treat the app as unconfirmed rather than assuming emulation will solve it.
4. Check the exact version and update channel
Compatibility can differ between a stable release, beta build, plug-in, and enterprise package. Check the version number in the publisher’s requirements, then compare it with the version you intend to install. After a major Windows update, re-check the vendor’s notice instead of relying on an old forum answer.

How to check an accessory or peripheral
Use the model number, not just the product category
Write down the complete model and revision printed on the device or its label. Search the manufacturer’s support site for that identifier plus Windows 11 Arm or Arm64 driver. Microsoft’s rule is straightforward: a peripheral works when the required driver is built into Windows 11 or the hardware developer has released an Arm64 driver. Read the driver notes for your Windows edition and build.
Do not treat any of these as proof by themselves:
- A Windows logo on the packaging.
- An installer that launches successfully.
- A driver download labeled only “Windows 10/11.”
- Basic USB detection in File Explorer or Device Manager.
Those signs can show that the device is seen by Windows while an advanced function still lacks its ARM-compatible driver.
Separate basic access from full feature support
Test the capability that matters. A webcam may appear in Windows but fail in the vendor’s effects utility; a headset may play audio but lose its control panel; a scanner may be visible but lack feeder or duplex support. Record which functions use a separate driver or utility and verify each one with the manufacturer.
Printers: use Windows’ installation route when the vendor installer fails
Microsoft says most printers work with Windows 11 Arm, including printers that support the Mopria standard. It also notes that HP and Xerox provide Printer Support Apps. Optional vendor utilities and every model-specific feature still need confirmation from the printer maker.

Microsoft warns: “Microsoft is aware of some ARM PCs not being able to add or install a printer when using an installer provided by the printer manufacturer.” If that happens, use Windows’ built-in route unless the printer maker gives different instructions:
- Open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners.
- Select Add device and wait for Windows to discover the printer.
- If it is not found, choose the option to add it manually and follow Windows’ prompts for its network address, USB connection, or driver.
- Print a test page, then test the functions you need, such as color, duplex, multiple trays, and scanning.

How to interpret Microsoft’s compatibility rules
Apps and drivers are different compatibility layers
Microsoft describes native Arm64 and Store apps as using the Arm processor directly, while many x86 and x64 apps can run through emulation. The same FAQ says peripherals work when their drivers are built into Windows 11 or supplied by the hardware developer as Arm64 drivers. In practice:
- A word processor can run under emulation while a scanner driver required by its plug-in cannot.
- A game can install while its anti-cheat driver blocks launch.
- A security suite can open its user interface while its system filter is unsupported.
When a vendor says “works with Windows,” ask for confirmation of the exact Windows 11 on Arm device class, driver, and feature. That question resolves more uncertainty than the Snapdragon name alone.

Use compatibility lists as leads, not certification
Microsoft points to an evolving third-party, open-source “Works on Windows on Arm” list to which it contributes compatibility data. Such a list can help you discover reports for an app or game, but it is not a substitute for the publisher’s current support statement. Verify important software against the exact version and dependencies.
Keep the system updated, but use the right update source
For the ARM Surface devices covered by Microsoft’s device guidance, the recommended check is Settings > Windows Update > Check for updates. On another Snapdragon laptop, follow that laptop maker’s firmware and driver instructions; Surface-specific packages are not universal.

A practical test plan for an essential app or device
Use this controlled process when failure would interrupt work, school, accessibility, security, or production:

- Collect authoritative evidence: the publisher’s app requirements or the hardware maker’s driver page. Prefer a dated release note that names Windows on Arm or Arm64.
- Install updates first: apply Windows Update and the laptop maker’s firmware guidance. Do not install a driver intended for a different architecture just because its filename contains “Windows 11.”
- Install the least complex supported path: for an app, use the publisher’s Arm64 or Store package when available; for a printer, try Windows’ built-in setup before a vendor installer if Microsoft’s ARM guidance applies.
- Test the core workflow: open and save a real file, connect the required account, print or scan a representative document, record audio, use the camera, or launch the game through its normal anti-cheat process.
- Test advanced functions separately: duplex printing, color profiles, device buttons, encryption, plug-ins, accessibility controls, synchronization, and sleep/wake behavior.
- Document the result: note the working version, driver, Windows build, and any failed feature so a future update can be compared accurately.
This process follows Microsoft’s model-specific and driver-specific limits: the platform rules narrow the possibilities, but only the exact product and feature test establishes whether your workflow is usable.

What you should conclude before buying or depending on the laptop
A Snapdragon label is a starting point, not a compatibility guarantee. Windows 11 Arm can run most Windows applications and many x86/x64 programs through emulation, with Prism included in Windows 11 version 24H2. The decisive questions are whether the exact app version has an Arm64 build or reliable emulation path, whether it installs a system-level component, and whether each accessory’s required driver is built into Windows or supplied as Arm64 by its maker.
For an occasional app or ordinary printer, checking the official support page and testing the real task is usually enough. For a device or program that controls security, accessibility, storage, gaming anti-cheat, scanning, audio, or other hardware, require explicit ARM confirmation and test every essential function before making it your primary setup.
