Start by checking the AirPods’ model number against Apple’s current model list, then use the serial number to review coverage or ask Apple Support about an unresolved concern. A serial-number lookup, successful pairing, or convincing packaging is not, by itself, proof that the physical earbuds are genuine. Apple’s published guides explain how to identify models and find serial numbers; they do not provide a complete physical counterfeit checklist or a single definitive consumer authentication test.
Check the model number against Apple’s reference
Apple says the model number identifies an AirPods generation. Find it in the connected device’s settings or on the product, then compare it with Apple’s live list of models and introduction years. The list can change as Apple adds products, so use the current page rather than relying on an old list copied elsewhere.
- In settings: Open the AirPods’ device settings on the paired device and look for the model number. Apple’s AirPods guide also describes viewing model name, serial number, and firmware version in device settings.
- On the hardware: For AirPods and AirPods Pro, check the underside of each earbud. For AirPods Max, look behind the cushion on the left ear cup.
- Compare the number: Check the printed or settings-reported number against Apple’s AirPods model identification page. If the number is absent from the list or does not match the claimed product, treat that as a reason to investigate—not as a verdict on its own.
If you are comparing a claimed model with its charging case, Apple’s identification information also lists case models. Confirm that the case model and stated compatibility fit the AirPods generation you were told you were buying.

Find the correct serial number
Apple provides several ways to locate serial information: device settings, the product itself, and sometimes the original packaging or purchase paperwork. Use Apple’s serial-number instructions for the exact location and guidance for your product.

- AirPods and AirPods Pro: The primary serial number used for service is printed inside the charging-case lid. Apple notes that some individual earbuds also have their own serial numbers; for service, use the case-lid serial rather than an individual earbud’s number.
- AirPods Max: Remove the left magnetic ear cushion to find the serial number.
- Settings and paperwork: The paired device’s settings may show serial information. The original packaging, receipt, or invoice may also display a serial number.
Where possible, compare the number shown in settings with the number on the relevant hardware and purchase records. A discrepancy is worth raising with the seller or Apple, but the published guidance does not make a serial match a conclusive physical authentication test.
Use Apple’s coverage checker for coverage—not proof
Apple’s View Coverage page asks for a serial number to show device coverage and benefits, including AppleCare information. Use it to answer coverage questions. Apple does not describe a successful lookup as verification that the physical AirPods carrying that number are genuine, so do not treat a result as authentication.

What to do if something does not match
- Recheck the model and serial locations. Make sure you are comparing the correct product and, for service questions, the case-lid serial for AirPods or AirPods Pro.
- Review Apple’s identification and support options. Apple’s AirPods Support page provides model-identification help and routes to support.
- Ask Apple about service or inspection options. Apple’s service and repair page covers troubleshooting, repair, and replacement. Available options can depend on your location and parts availability.
- Report a suspected counterfeit. Apple provides an official counterfeit reporting form for suspected counterfeit or knockoff products.
How much certainty can these checks provide?
A model number that does not fit Apple’s reference, conflicting serial information, or an unresolved mismatch gives you a concrete reason to seek help. But Apple’s reviewed consumer guidance does not publish a comprehensive checklist of physical counterfeit clues or a single test that conclusively authenticates every pair. Keep the conclusion proportional to the evidence: model and serial checks help you identify the product and investigate concerns; coverage results tell you about coverage, not whether the hardware is genuine.
