Yes, XWorm can be built to steal credentials and other data, but a detection does not prove what it copied from your computer. XWorm is a changing family of remote-access malware. Documented variants include browser-credential and Discord-token theft, keylogging, clipboard monitoring and remote control; those are capabilities, not evidence that every variant used every feature on your device. The public evidence also does not establish that every XWorm variant steals browser cookies.

If you suspect an infection, contain the computer first, protect accounts from a separate clean device, then investigate. A local antivirus scan can find active malware or remnants, but it cannot tell a home user with certainty whether credentials, cookies or files were sent before the malware was discovered.

What XWorm can steal—and what that does not prove

XWorm is a family rather than one unchanging program. Operators can use different builds and modules, so behavior varies by sample. Malwarebytes describes Backdoor.XWorm as capable of data theft, spying, keylogging, silent operation and interference with security settings. Microsoft’s analysis of Trojan:MSIL/XWormRAT!MTB documents browser-credential and Discord-token stealer modules, keylogging, clipboard monitoring and remote-access functions.

Those descriptions answer “could XWorm steal this?” They do not answer “did this copy leave my computer?” A module may be absent, disabled, fail to run, find no useful data, or be used only for remote control. Conversely, an attacker could use a capability before you notice the infection. Treat passwords and sessions used on the computer as potentially exposed even when you cannot prove a transfer.

How to interpret the word “cookies”

The cited Microsoft MSIL description explicitly names browser credentials and Discord tokens. It does not establish that every XWorm variant steals browser cookies, so do not treat a cookie-stealer claim as universal. Browser cookies can nevertheless represent valuable sessions in many malware incidents; changing passwords, signing out other sessions and enabling multifactor authentication reduces the value of anything an attacker may have obtained.

Do this before investigating the computer

Investigation is less important than stopping further access. Microsoft Security Intelligence says under “What to do now”: Immediately disconnect the infected device from all networks, including Ethernet, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth. Follow that instruction for an actively suspected device.

  1. Isolate it. Turn off Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, unplug Ethernet and remove other network adapters. Do not reconnect merely to download a scanner.
  2. Stop using it for account access. Do not sign in, enter a password, approve a login prompt or open sensitive files on the suspected computer.
  3. Use a known-clean device. A phone or computer that is up to date and not showing signs of compromise is preferable. From it, change passwords for accounts used on the affected Windows device.
  4. Prioritize high-impact accounts. Secure your primary email first, then banking and payment services, password managers, work accounts and any account that can reset other accounts. Review sign-in history where the service provides it.
  5. Turn on multifactor authentication. Enable MFA for critical accounts. A FIDO2 security key can be one MFA method where the service supports it; it authenticates a login but does not detect or remove malware.
  6. Tell the organization if it is a work device. Contact IT or the security team before deleting files, reinstalling Windows or attempting extensive cleanup. They may need the device and its evidence for incident response.

Microsoft’s MSIL guidance specifically recommends changing passwords for accounts accessed from the infected system and enabling MFA on critical accounts. Its VBS guidance also recommends updated security definitions and a full scan. These actions protect accounts while you determine what happened; they are not proof that data was or was not stolen.

Can a scan tell whether XWorm already sent your data?

Usually, no. A scan reports what the security tool can identify at scan time: an active file, a remnant, a changed setting or another detectable artifact. It does not provide a receipt showing which passwords, cookie databases or personal files were copied earlier. Microsoft’s public XWorm descriptions provide capabilities, sample indicators and response steps, not a consumer method for proving the exact scope of a past transfer.

A negative result therefore has a narrow meaning: that particular tool did not find a detectable threat during that scan. It does not establish that the machine was never infected, that a removed sample did not run, or that no information left the device. If you need a defensible answer—especially for a business, legal matter or high-value account—preserve evidence and ask qualified incident responders to examine endpoint and network records.

Run a safe Windows security check

1. Review Microsoft Defender Protection history

On Windows, open Windows Security from the Start menu and select Virus & threat protection, then Protection history. Record the detection name, date, affected path and action taken. A quarantine or removal entry is useful evidence; do not assume that an entry means every component or persistence mechanism was removed.

Do not clear Protection history before noting the details. If the computer is managed, provide screenshots or exported information to IT rather than experimenting with files identified in the alert.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2. Update definitions and run a full scan

Still in Virus & threat protection, install available security-intelligence updates, then choose Scan options and Full scan. Let it finish. Microsoft notes that Defender may automatically remove an XWorm detection, while remnants or system changes can remain; its guidance recommends current definitions and a full scan. Keep the result with the detection details.

If Defender cannot start, repeatedly turns off, or reports that settings are controlled by an unknown policy, leave the computer isolated and involve IT or a reputable incident-response professional. Do not download a supposed “XWorm removal” utility from an advertisement, forum attachment or unsolicited message.

3. Check security settings for unauthorized changes

Open Windows Security and inspect Virus & threat protection settings, including Manage settings and Exclusions. Look for exclusions, disabled real-time protection, altered cloud-delivered protection or other changes you did not make. Microsoft’s XWorm analyses describe attempts to impair Defender and add exclusions.

A suspicious setting is an investigation lead, not attribution by itself. Administrators, legitimate software and corporate policies can change Defender settings. Photograph or record an unfamiliar change before restoring it, and ask the system owner or IT team if you are unsure.

Look for persistence and suspicious activity

XWorm variants analyzed by Microsoft use several ways to start again after a reboot. The exact names, paths and network indicators in vendor reports belong to analyzed samples and can change; they are not universal signatures. Use them to guide a review, not as a checklist that clears the computer when nothing matches.

Scheduled tasks

Press Start, type Task Scheduler and open it. In Task Scheduler Library, inspect recently created or modified tasks and their Actions. Pay attention to actions launching an unfamiliar executable, script interpreter or file from a user-writable directory. Microsoft’s Trojan:VBS/XWormRAT!rfn and Trojan:Win32/XWormRAT!AMTB pages describe scheduled-task persistence in analyzed samples.

Do not delete a task solely because its name looks random or unfamiliar. Record the task name, author, trigger and action, then have IT or a qualified technician validate it. Deleting a legitimate task can break software; deleting only one malicious task may leave other persistence behind.

Startup folders and startup entries

Open Settings > Apps > Startup and review entries you do not recognize. You can also inspect the per-user and all-users Startup folders by pressing Windows key + R and entering shell:startup or shell:common startup. Treat an unfamiliar script or executable as evidence to preserve, not an automatic deletion target.

Run keys in the registry

Microsoft’s variant reports include Windows Run keys as persistence locations. Registry edits can make Windows unbootable or remove legitimate startup software, so do not delete a value based only on a name. If you are competent with registry inspection, export the relevant key for evidence first; otherwise ask IT to examine it.

Files, processes and network behavior

Note recently created files in user-writable or public directories, scripts launched by unusual processes, and programs that continue running after Defender reports a removal. Microsoft’s pages describe hidden or unfamiliar files, scripts and unexpected network activity for particular VBS, MSIL and Win32 samples. A path or filename copied from one report is not a universal XWorm indicator, and a device can be compromised without matching a published sample.

With the device still isolated, you can open Task Manager and record unfamiliar processes, publishers and file locations. Do not upload suspected files to random online scanners if they may contain confidential information. For a managed device, let the security team collect process and network telemetry using approved tools.

How to judge an indicator without jumping to a conclusion

What you observe What it may mean What it cannot prove Safer next action
Defender detects an XWorm variant An identified file or behavior matches that detection. It does not show which accounts or files were copied. Keep the alert details, isolate the device and begin account recovery from a clean device.
An unfamiliar scheduled task, Startup item or Run value Possible persistence or a legitimate program you do not recognize. It is not conclusive attribution without examining its action, file and context. Record it and have IT or a qualified technician assess it before removal.
Defender exclusions or protection disabled Possible security tampering; some XWorm samples attempt this. It does not identify the responsible malware or prove exfiltration. Preserve the setting, keep the device offline and restore protection with professional guidance.
No alert, suspicious task or published IP/domain match The tool or review found nothing it recognizes. It does not clear the device or prove no past theft. Continue password rotation and consider a deeper examination if risk is high.

Recover accounts after possible credential or session theft

Use the clean device for every recovery action. Change each password to a unique value that was not used on the suspected computer. Start with the email account that receives password-reset messages, then work through financial, work, cloud-storage, social and shopping accounts. If you reused a password, change it anywhere it was used.

Use each service’s security page to sign out other sessions, revoke remembered devices or reset active tokens when those controls are available. Review recent sign-ins, forwarding rules, new recovery addresses, payment changes and newly created app passwords. These are general incident-response precautions; the XWorm pages do not provide a service-by-service recovery procedure.

If an attacker may have accessed your email, inspect mail-forwarding and delegate-access settings because those can preserve access even after a password change.

Decide whether to clean, rebuild or escalate

Situation Appropriate response Confidence provided
One alert on a personal computer, Defender removed it, and no sensitive accounts were used afterward Keep the device offline while reviewing the alert, update definitions, run a full scan, inspect persistence and rotate credentials from a clean device. Reasonable remediation steps, but not proof of no earlier theft.
Repeated detections, disabled security tools, unknown persistence or continuing suspicious behavior Stop self-cleaning, preserve evidence and obtain qualified malware-remediation help. A full Windows rebuild with trusted installation media may be appropriate after evidence is preserved. Higher confidence after a verified rebuild, but account recovery is still required.
Work, school or business-managed device Disconnect it and contact the organization’s IT/security team immediately. Follow its evidence-preservation and reimage process. Depends on the organization’s endpoint, identity and network logs.
High-value accounts, regulated data or suspected targeted access Use professional incident responders to review endpoint and network evidence before wiping the system. Only an evidence-based investigation can estimate scope; a consumer scan cannot.

A rebuild is a general incident-response option when system integrity is uncertain, not a guarantee that stolen information can be recovered. Before reinstalling, ask the system owner or responder whether logs, disk images or other evidence must be preserved. Afterward, install Windows and applications from trusted media, apply updates, restore only known-clean data and change credentials again if the original recovery occurred before the rebuild.

What the Microsoft sample indicators mean

Microsoft’s VBS, MSIL and Win32 pages include sample filenames, task labels, registry locations, domains, IP addresses and ports. Those values can help a security professional correlate telemetry with a particular analyzed sample, but they are volatile. Attackers can change infrastructure; legitimate software can share a path or port; and a different XWorm build may use none of the listed indicators. Never treat a single matching string as conclusive attribution, and never treat the absence of a match as a clean bill of health.

For the same reason, do not publish or circulate a static “XWorm checklist” as if it covered every build. Keep security software and vendor guidance current, and let an investigator correlate multiple facts: the detection metadata, file behavior, persistence, account activity and network records.

When you need an incident-response investigation

Escalate when the device contains business secrets, financial records, administrator credentials, regulated information or evidence of account takeover; when detections recur; or when you need to know what may have left the computer. Keep the device powered and isolated if responders instruct you to preserve volatile evidence, or shut it down if they instruct otherwise. Do not run cleaners, delete tasks or reinstall Windows before asking, because those actions can remove the evidence needed to determine scope.

An investigator may compare endpoint artifacts with firewall, DNS, proxy, identity-provider and cloud-service logs. Even then, the result may be an evidence-based assessment rather than a perfect list of every copied file. The public XWorm descriptions do not promise a consumer tool that reconstructs historical theft.

Practical checklist

  • Disconnect Wi-Fi, Ethernet and Bluetooth on the suspected device.
  • Do not sign in or change passwords on it.
  • From a clean device, change email, financial, work and reused passwords.
  • Enable MFA and revoke other sessions where services allow it.
  • Record Defender detection names, paths, dates and actions.
  • Update definitions and run a full Defender scan while keeping the device isolated.
  • Review Defender exclusions, protection changes, scheduled tasks, Startup entries, Run keys and unfamiliar files without deleting uncertain items.
  • Give managed devices to IT/security before wiping or reinstalling.
  • Escalate to qualified responders when exact scope or evidence matters.

XWorm’s documented capabilities make precaution appropriate, but capability is not a receipt for stolen data. Containment, clean-device account recovery and a careful, evidence-aware examination are the only responsible way to reduce risk without claiming certainty a home scan cannot provide.
