The quickest check is Start > Settings > System > Activation. On that page, confirm the edition is Windows 11 Pro and read the activation message. The exact message “Windows is activated with a digital license linked to your Microsoft account.” confirms both that Windows is activated and that the digital license is associated with your Microsoft account.
If the page says “Windows is activated with a digital license” without the linked-to-your-account wording, activation succeeded but the license is not linked to the account. “Windows is not activated” means activation has not succeeded and requires separate troubleshooting. Microsoft documents these status distinctions in its Windows activation guidance.
What this check tells you
Windows activation and Microsoft-account association are related but separate facts. A PC can be activated with a digital license while that license remains unlinked to your Microsoft account. Conversely, signing in to an account does not by itself prove that the installed copy of Windows is activated.
The Activation page combines both checks in one place. Its status wording identifies whether activation succeeded and, when applicable, whether the digital license is linked to the account currently used for Windows.

This is a status check, not a purchase step. You do not need to buy a key, download installation media, or install a separate utility to read the result. Windows reports the relevant information in Settings, and the exact sentence matters more than an icon, color, notification, or whether the computer has recently restarted.
Before you start
Use an administrator account if you expect to change the account association or run the Activation troubleshooter. You can still open the Activation page to read status in ordinary use, but Microsoft requires administrator access for the troubleshooter and for the account-linking process described in its activation instructions.
Have the Microsoft account you want to associate with this computer available. If several people use the PC, decide which account should remain available for future reactivation before selecting Add an account. The account choice is an explicit license-association step, not simply a preference for which profile appears on the sign-in screen.

- Open Start and select Settings.
- In Settings, select System.
- Select Activation.
- Check the edition shown on the page. For this guide, it should say Windows 11 Pro.
- Read the complete activation message, not just the color, icon or heading.
The wording on this page is the authoritative answer for the installed Windows copy. If the edition is Windows 11 Home, a Windows 11 Pro license cannot be assumed to activate it; edition compatibility must be corrected separately.
Take note of the edition and the entire sentence before changing anything. That record helps you distinguish an account-linking issue from an activation failure and gives you the exact wording to use when following Microsoft’s error-specific instructions.
Interpret the message you see
| Activation-page message | What it means | What to do next |
|---|---|---|
| Windows is activated with a digital license linked to your Microsoft account | Windows is activated, and the digital license is associated with the Microsoft account. | No account-linking action is needed. Keep the account available if you later need to reactivate after a significant hardware change. |
| Windows is activated with a digital license | Activation succeeded, but Microsoft does not report the license as linked to the Microsoft account. | Use the account-linking procedure below while signed in as an administrator. |
| Windows is not activated | Activation has not succeeded. | Read the displayed error, verify the edition and Windows version, then use the Activation troubleshooter and Microsoft’s error guidance. |
Do not treat the second message as proof that account linkage already exists. The absence of the phrase linked to your Microsoft account is the important distinction.
Likewise, the linked sentence confirms two things at once: the installed copy is activated, and Microsoft associates the digital license with the account. It does not mean every future hardware configuration will activate automatically, nor does it make a Home installation equivalent to Pro. Edition and device issues still have to be resolved on their own terms.

Link an activated Windows 11 Pro license to your Microsoft account
Use this procedure when the Activation page says Windows is activated but does not include the linked-license wording.
- Sign in to Windows with an account that has administrator rights.
- Open Settings > Accounts > Your info.
- Check the account type. Microsoft indicates that a Microsoft account displays an email address above the word Administrator. A local account does not use that Microsoft-account sign-in.
- If you are using a local administrator account, choose the option in Your info to sign in with a Microsoft account and complete the sign-in process.
- Return to Settings > System > Activation.
- Select Add an account and sign in with the Microsoft account you want associated with the digital license.
- After the account is added, read the status again. The page should show Windows is activated with a digital license linked to your Microsoft account.
These steps and the required administrator context are described in Microsoft’s activation instructions. If the linked wording does not appear, record any message shown on the Activation page before trying other changes; the account may not have administrator rights, the sign-in may not have completed, or the installed edition may not match the license.

Do not infer success merely because the Microsoft account appears under Your info. Return to Activation and verify the full linked-license sentence. That second check confirms that the account association was recognized for the digital license, rather than only confirming that Windows has a Microsoft-account profile.
Why linking matters after a hardware change
A digital license is associated with the device’s hardware configuration. Microsoft says that associating the license with a Microsoft account can help you reactivate Windows after a significant hardware change, such as replacing a major component. The association does not make an incompatible edition valid, and it does not eliminate the need to resolve an activation error.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →If activation stopped after hardware was changed, first make sure you are signed in to the same Microsoft account that was linked to the device. Then open Settings > System > Activation and use the Activation troubleshooter when Windows reports that it is not activated. Microsoft’s hardware-change instructions are available at Reactivating Windows after a hardware change.
The account association is therefore useful preparation, not a guarantee. A license that was linked before the change gives the troubleshooter an account association to work with, but the current device still has to pass Microsoft’s activation checks. If Windows remains activated, there is no need to run the troubleshooter simply to verify the account; read the status sentence instead.
What to do when Windows says it is not activated
Do not start by searching for a product key. First identify the installed edition, the exact error and whether the PC is running Windows 11. Microsoft’s recommended sequence is:
- Confirm that the device is running Windows 11 and that the installed edition is the one you are licensed to use, such as Windows 11 Pro.
- Open Settings > System > Activation and note the complete error message or code.
- Run the Activation troubleshooter from the Activation page. It requires administrator access and is available only while Windows is not activated.
- Apply the action suggested for the displayed error. Microsoft’s error-specific guidance is at Get help with Windows activation errors.
- Recheck the Activation page after each correction so you can see whether the status changed.
The troubleshooter is not a general account-verification tool. If Windows already reports an activated digital license, its purpose is not to add the Microsoft-account association; use Add an account for that situation instead.
Because the troubleshooter is offered only when Windows is not activated, do not expect to find it as a routine replacement for the status check. If the page shows an activated license, follow the account-linking steps. If it shows an error, preserve the code and use the error guidance rather than repeatedly entering random keys.
Edition mismatch: Windows 11 Home installed, Pro license owned
A Windows 11 Pro license does not activate an installation of Windows 11 Home. This is an edition mismatch, not an account-linking failure. Check the edition at Settings > System > Activation and follow Microsoft’s activation or edition-correction guidance for the error shown. Linking the account cannot convert an activated Home installation into Pro.
This distinction prevents a common wrong turn: adding the Microsoft account may correctly associate a qualifying Pro digital license, but it cannot change the edition currently installed. Confirm the edition first, then follow the instructions tied to the activation error or edition correction.

Activation stopped after replacing hardware
A significant hardware change can cause the digital license to stop matching the device. Use the Microsoft account that was associated with the license, then launch the Activation troubleshooter from the not-activated Activation page. The account association is useful in this recovery scenario, but the troubleshooter still requires administrator access and Windows must currently be reporting that it is not activated.
If the computer still reports an activated license after the hardware work, there is no activation failure to troubleshoot. You can simply confirm whether the linked wording remains present. If it reports that Windows is not activated, work from the displayed error and use the previously associated account when Microsoft’s reactivation steps request it.
Digital license versus product key
These are two different activation methods:
| Method | What it is | What you should expect |
|---|---|---|
| Digital license | An activation entitlement associated with the device; activation can occur without typing a code. | The Activation page reports activation status. If associated with an account, it explicitly says the digital license is linked to your Microsoft account. |
| Product key | A 25-character code used for a qualifying Windows edition and license. | You may need the key only when your purchase or the displayed activation error calls for it. |
Buying a Windows 11 Pro upgrade through Microsoft Store can provide a digital license rather than a product key. The status check itself does not require you to purchase anything or locate a key. Microsoft explains the distinction in Find your Windows product key.
Do not assume that owning a 25-character key is the only proof of a valid license. A digital license is specifically designed to activate without typing a code, and the Activation page identifies that method. Conversely, do not assume that finding a key will solve an edition mismatch or a hardware-change error; use the error and edition information to choose the relevant procedure.
Common cases and the correct next action
| What you observe | Correct interpretation | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| Windows 11 Pro and the full linked-license message | Both activation and account association are confirmed. | Use Windows normally. Keep access to that Microsoft account for possible hardware-change reactivation. |
| Windows 11 Pro, activated digital license, no linked wording | Activation works, but the license is not associated with the account. | Verify the administrator Microsoft-account sign-in under Accounts > Your info, then choose Add an account under Activation. |
| Windows is not activated, but the user expects a Pro license | Activation failed; the cause could be an error, edition mismatch or hardware change. | Record the error, confirm Windows 11 and the edition, then run the administrator-only Activation troubleshooter. |
| Windows 11 Home is installed and a Pro license is available | The license and installed edition do not match. | Resolve the edition mismatch using the instructions associated with the Activation error; account linking alone will not activate Home as Pro. |
| Activation failed immediately after a major hardware replacement | The digital license may no longer match the device. | Sign in with the previously associated Microsoft account and use the Activation troubleshooter. |
How to verify the result
After linking an account or completing troubleshooting, return to Settings > System > Activation rather than relying on a notification or a restart alone. Confirm all three relevant details:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute- The installed edition is Windows 11 Pro.
- The page reports that Windows is activated.
- When account association is required, the message explicitly includes linked to your Microsoft account.
If any of these details is missing, the original issue is not fully resolved. Use the exact message shown on the page to choose the next Microsoft support procedure instead of trying unrelated key-recovery steps.
For example, an activated Pro edition with no linked wording needs account association, not the troubleshooter. A not-activated Pro edition needs error troubleshooting, not merely a profile change. A Home edition needs edition correction, even if a Pro license exists in the purchaser’s account.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When you should look for a product key
Look for a product key only when your purchase method supplied one or the activation error specifically requests it. A digital-license activation normally does not require entering a 25-character code. Microsoft’s product-key guidance explains where a key may be found for different purchase routes, but finding a key is not part of the routine Activation-page check.
This order of operations saves time: read the status, confirm the edition, and capture the error before looking for a code. A key search is relevant only when the actual license route or Microsoft’s instructions make it relevant.

Privacy and account choice
Link the license to the Microsoft account you intend to keep using for this PC. The account association is intended to help identify the license during later reactivation, particularly after a significant hardware change. If several people use the computer, confirm which administrator account is being used before selecting Add an account; adding an account is an explicit association step, not merely a display preference.
Do not share a product key or account password while asking someone to help with the check. The routine verification requires only the Settings pages and the exact status message. If assistance is needed, provide the edition, status wording, and error code rather than exposing credentials.
Quick decision guide
- Open Activation. Go to Start > Settings > System > Activation.
- Check the edition. Confirm it says Windows 11 Pro.
- Read the exact status. The linked-license sentence confirms both conditions; the shorter activated sentence confirms activation only.
- If activated but unlinked, verify a Microsoft administrator account under Settings > Accounts > Your info, then select Add an account on Activation.
- If not activated, note the error, confirm Windows 11 and the edition, and run the administrator-only Activation troubleshooter.
- If hardware changed, use the previously associated account and the troubleshooter to attempt reactivation.
- Verify again. Return to Activation and confirm the edition and the complete status sentence after every correction.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I check whether Windows 11 is activated?
Open Start > Settings > System > Activation. Read the status sentence. “Windows is activated with a digital license” or the longer linked-license sentence indicates activation; “Windows is not activated” means activation has not succeeded.
How can I tell whether my Windows license is linked to my Microsoft account?
On the Activation page, look for the exact wording “Windows is activated with a digital license linked to your Microsoft account.” The shorter activated message confirms activation but does not confirm account linkage.
What if Windows 11 Pro is activated but not linked?
Sign in as an administrator, check Settings > Accounts > Your info to ensure the administrator is using a Microsoft account, then return to Settings > System > Activation, choose Add an account, and sign in. Recheck the full status sentence.
Does signing in to a Microsoft account automatically activate Windows?
No. Activation and account association are separate. A Microsoft-account sign-in does not prove activation, and an activated digital license can remain unlinked until you use Add an account on the Activation page.
Can a Windows 11 Pro license activate Windows 11 Home?
No. Home and Pro are different editions for activation purposes. Check the installed edition on the Activation page and follow Microsoft’s edition-correction or error guidance; account linking alone cannot turn Home into Pro.
When should I run the Activation troubleshooter?
Use it when Windows reports that it is not activated, including after a significant hardware change. It requires administrator access and is available only while Windows is not activated. It is not the normal tool for linking an already activated license.
Recommended Free Tools
Will linking my license help after replacing hardware?
Microsoft says associating the digital license with a Microsoft account can help with reactivation after a significant hardware change. If activation stops, sign in with the previously associated account and use the Activation troubleshooter.
Do I need a 25-character product key for this check?
No. A digital license can activate Windows without entering a key, and a Microsoft Store Windows 11 Pro upgrade can provide a digital license. Look for a 25-character product key only when your purchase route or the displayed activation error calls for one.
The Bottom Line
Go to Start > Settings > System > Activation and verify three things: the edition is Windows 11 Pro, Windows reports that it is activated, and the message includes “linked to your Microsoft account”. If activation is confirmed without that wording, use Add an account as an administrator. If Windows is not activated, record the error, confirm the edition and Windows version, and run the administrator-only Activation troubleshooter. A Pro license cannot activate a Home installation, and a digital license does not normally require a product key.
