To verify Steam’s actual bitness, inspect the executable attached to its process—not just your Linux installation. Find the Steam PID, resolve /proc/PID/exe, and run file -L on that path. An ELF 64-bit result confirms that executable is 64-bit; ELF 32-bit confirms a 32-bit process.
The definitive check: inspect Steam’s process executable
Linux can run more than one Steam-related executable at once. A launcher, the main client, the web helper, and game-runtime components may have different files and, in some installations, different architectures. Therefore, check the PID belonging to the component you want to diagnose.
1. List Steam-related processes
pgrep -a -f 'steam|steamwebhelper'The -a option prints each matching PID and its command line. The broader pattern is intentional: an exact steam match can miss a helper, wrapper, or launcher process. Read the output and identify the main client or the particular helper involved in your problem.

readlink -f /proc/$pid/exe
file -L /proc/$pid/exeReplace 12345 with the PID you found. Linux exposes /proc/PID/exe as a symbolic link containing the pathname of the executable run by that process. readlink -f resolves that link to the underlying path. The -L option tells file to follow the procfs link and inspect the target instead of merely describing the link itself.

Interpret the final line this way:
- ELF 64-bit: the selected executable is a 64-bit application.
- ELF 32-bit: the selected executable is a 32-bit application.
The ELF class is the direct answer for that process. It is more reliable than inferring Steam’s architecture from the operating system, a package name, or a startup message.
A one-process command for the normal native client
If the process name is exactly steam, this compact check finds the newest matching PID and inspects it immediately:

file -L "/proc/$pid/exe"pgrep -n selects the newest match, while -x requires the process name to be exactly steam. The error branch prevents the remaining commands from running with an empty PID.

If it prints Steam process not found, do not conclude that Steam is absent. The launcher may be represented by a shell script, a child process, a Flatpak wrapper, or a differently named helper. Run the broader listing:

pgrep -a -f 'steam|steamwebhelper'Then run readlink -f and file -L once for each relevant PID. A wrapper can be the first match without being the executable whose architecture matters.
Why checking Linux’s architecture is not enough
A 64-bit kernel, the output of uname -m, or a Steam startup line that says the host is 64-bit describes the environment in which programs run. None of those observations proves that the selected Steam executable is a 64-bit ELF file.
The reverse is also important. A 64-bit Linux installation can execute a 32-bit ELF program when the required compatibility libraries and drivers are installed. Finding ELF 32-bit therefore does not mean that the entire operating system was installed as 32-bit.

Valve’s Linux requirements explain why both architectures can appear on a 64-bit system. Steam requires a 64-bit x86_64/AMD64 kernel, but it also requires 32-bit and 64-bit glibc and graphics-driver support. Valve’s package instructions enable both the amd64 and i386 architectures. Steam’s own client, a helper, and a game runtime can consequently use different binaries while sharing the same 64-bit host.

Which Steam process should you inspect?

When comparing several candidates, record the PID, resolved executable path, ELF class, packaging source, and role. This avoids attributing a helper’s result to the main client.
Alternative commands that show the ELF class
file -L is the simplest test, but standard ELF inspection tools can provide a second view of the same executable:
readelf -h /proc/$pid/exe | grep -E 'Class|Machine'
objdump -f /proc/$pid/exe | grep -E 'file format|architecture'readelf should show Class: ELF64 or Class: ELF32. The machine field adds processor information, such as the target architecture, but the class is the bitness you are checking. objdump reports the file format and architecture in its header summary.

These alternatives do not replace the PID-specific part of the procedure. Running them against a Steam installation directory, a desktop shortcut, or a different binary can answer a different question. Keep /proc/$pid/exe in the command when you need the architecture of the currently running process.

Reading unusual output
The result says it is a shell script
A shell-script launcher is not an ELF executable, so it has no ELF32 or ELF64 class. Use the process list to find the child process it started, then inspect that child’s /proc/PID/exe. The script may select a different binary based on the installation method or system libraries.
The path ends with (deleted)
If an executable was replaced or unlinked while Steam continued running, readlink can display a path ending in (deleted). Run file -L /proc/$pid/exe while the process still exists; the kernel may still expose the mapped executable through procfs. If that fails, restart Steam and inspect the new PID, or inspect the matching Steam installation path on disk after confirming which file the launcher uses.
The executable path is inside a sandbox
A Flatpak installation can show a wrapper or a sandbox-specific path. That path is not itself evidence of 32-bit or 64-bit operation. Use pgrep -a -f to enumerate candidates and inspect the actual client and helper PIDs individually. The ELF result, not the packaging path, determines the architecture of each process.
The PID disappears
Steam can restart during an update or when a component crashes. A procfs entry disappears as soon as the process exits, so a command that worked moments earlier can return a missing-file error. Re-run the process listing, select a fresh PID, and perform the two inspections immediately. Do not reuse a stale PID number, because Linux can later assign that number to another process.

Permission and procfs problems
Reading another user’s process executable can be restricted by procfs ptrace permissions. Run the commands as the same user who launched Steam. On a machine you administer, use the appropriate administrative access according to your distribution’s policy; elevated access should be limited to systems you are authorized to manage.
If readlink or file reports permission denied, first verify that the PID belongs to your user and that Steam is still running. A permission error does not indicate a 32-bit executable. It means the kernel did not allow the inspection.
Architecture requirements around Steam on Linux
The bitness test answers one narrow question, but Steam’s Linux compatibility requirements explain common mixed-architecture installations.

The glibc cutoff is a support requirement, not an ELF-bitness test. A process can be visibly 64-bit and still fail to start if its host lacks a supported glibc, graphics stack, or other runtime dependency.
A repeatable diagnostic workflow
- Start Steam and reproduce the situation. Keep the client or helper running so its procfs entry exists while you inspect it.
- Enumerate candidates. Run
pgrep -a -f 'steam|steamwebhelper'and note every PID and command line. - Classify each role. Distinguish launcher, main client, web helper, wrapper, and any game or runtime process relevant to the issue.
- Resolve each executable. For each selected PID, run
readlink -f /proc/PID/exe. - Check the ELF class. Run
file -L /proc/PID/exe. Record whether the output says ELF 64-bit or ELF 32-bit. - Cross-check if needed. Use
readelf -horobjdump -fagainst the same procfs path. - Interpret the result in context. Compare the architecture with the process role and packaging source; do not generalize one helper’s result to every Steam executable.
- Investigate failures separately. Handle stale PIDs, permissions, deleted files, and wrappers before drawing a conclusion.
Common mistakes and their fixes
- Checking only
uname -m: this reports the kernel’s machine architecture, not the ELF class of Steam. Inspect/proc/PID/exeinstead. - Inspecting a downloaded installer: an installer or launcher may differ from the running client. Use the executable link for the live PID.
- Using the first matching PID: process order is not a role guarantee. List all candidates and identify the client or helper you actually need.
- Omitting
-Lfromfile: without link following, the command can describe the procfs symbolic link instead of the target executable. - Assuming 32-bit means a 32-bit Linux installation: 64-bit Linux can run 32-bit programs when compatibility libraries are installed.
- Assuming one Steam architecture: architecture belongs to each executable. A launcher, client, web helper, and game runtime can produce different results.
- Continuing after a restart: if the process exits, its procfs path is gone. Refresh the PID and repeat the check.
What a correct conclusion looks like
A precise report names the process and the evidence: for example, “PID 12345 resolves to the client executable, and file -L /proc/12345/exe reports ELF 64-bit.” If another PID reports ELF 32-bit, describe that result as belonging to that specific helper or runtime. Include the executable path and role when troubleshooting with someone else.
This wording separates three facts that are often confused: the host kernel’s architecture, the architecture of a particular running executable, and the availability of 32-bit compatibility libraries. Only the second is established by the procfs ELF check.
