To tell whether Steam is down or the problem is local, check Steam’s own status guidance first, then narrow the failure: try more than one game server, check Steam Friends, and test your connection and network settings. A third-party dashboard can add useful detail, but it is not an official Valve confirmation. These checks identify likely causes; a status signal alone cannot prove that every Steam service or region is affected.
Start with Steam’s status guidance
Before changing settings on your computer or router, look for evidence of a broader Steam problem. Steam Support recommends checking the Steam Server Status page to rule out system-wide downtime. Its Server Verification Failed guidance also says that if you cannot connect to any game servers, the Concurrent Steam Users graph may help: a very sharp decline in users can indicate a temporary outage.
Steam Support describes this as a process for working out whether the error comes from a Steam outage, a game server’s connection to Steam Authentication Servers, or your internet connection. That distinction matters: not every connection error has the same cause, and a failed sign-in or game connection by itself does not establish that Steam is down.

These are clues, not an all-clear or a guarantee. An outage indicator does not mean every Steam feature, game, or region is affected equally. Likewise, a normal-looking status signal does not rule out an issue limited to a particular service, game server, region, or account connection. Steam Support notes that timeouts when accessing Steam sites make a system-wide issue more likely, but a timeout on its own does not identify the exact failure.

How to read a status check
- Several unrelated Steam functions fail at once: A broader Steam issue becomes more plausible, especially if Steam sites also time out.
- Only one game or server fails: Test another server before treating it as a Steam-wide outage.
- Steam’s status signals look normal: Continue with the local checks below. Status information is diagnostic evidence, not proof that your setup is at fault.
The Concurrent Steam Users graph is useful as a clue when you cannot connect to any game servers, not as a direct test of every service. A sharp decline can be consistent with a temporary outage, but it does not tell you which feature, region, or game is affected. Treat the graph as one signal to compare with your own symptoms and the Steam Server Status guidance.
Use third-party status information as a cross-check
SteamDB’s SteamStat.us is an unofficial live dashboard. It breaks information into service categories and regional connection-manager data, and its readings refresh dynamically. That extra detail can help you see whether an apparent problem is concentrated in one service or region. Its displayed states and counts are snapshots that can change, not a statement from Valve.
| Check | Authority | What it can help show | How to interpret its freshness |
|---|---|---|---|
| Steam Support status guidance | Official Steam guidance | Whether system-wide downtime is plausible; its support guidance also points to the Concurrent Steam Users graph as a clue when no game servers are reachable. | The guidance explains what to check; it is not itself a live, detailed service-and-region dashboard. |
| SteamDB SteamStat.us | Unofficial third-party reporting | Service categories and regional connection-manager readings. | Readings refresh dynamically and can change; treat them as a current snapshot, not a durable statistic or Valve confirmation. |
Use the two approaches together rather than treating either as a definitive test. Official guidance is the better starting point for Steam’s recommended troubleshooting process; an unofficial dashboard can provide a more granular cross-check. Neither one can establish that every feature and location has the same status.
There is a practical difference between the two checks. Steam Support tells you which diagnostic steps Steam recommends, including what to do when game servers or Steam Friends cannot connect. SteamStat.us can show a more detailed, rapidly changing view across service categories and regional connection managers. The former is authoritative guidance; the latter can help you compare patterns. A momentary user counter or service state should not be turned into a lasting statistic, and neither check replaces testing the specific connection that is failing.
If the dashboard appears normal while your client still fails, do not assume the problem is imaginary or that your device must be at fault. The signal may not capture a localized, account-specific, game-specific, or very recent problem. If the dashboard shows an issue, that also does not prove every Steam feature is unavailable. Match the status information to what you can and cannot reach.
Find out whether the failure is limited to a game server
If Steam opens but you cannot join a game, test more than one server for that game when possible. Steam Support’s Server Verification Failed guidance distinguishes a problem with a particular game server from an inability to connect across servers. If a different server works, the original server is a more likely source of the trouble than a general Steam outage.

- Try connecting to another server for the same game.
- If that works, focus on the original server or game-specific connection rather than assuming all of Steam is down.
- If you cannot connect to any game servers, check Steam’s status guidance and then check whether Steam Friends is connected.
Trying another server is a comparison, not a guarantee: success elsewhere points toward the original server as the source, but it does not diagnose that server or explain why it failed. Conversely, failure across multiple servers makes a broader issue worth checking, but it still leaves local internet trouble and network restrictions in the picture. Keep the test narrow: compare different servers before making changes to your computer or router.

Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Also separate the game connection from the rest of Steam. If you can use other Steam functions but cannot reach one game server, the failure is narrower than a situation where Steam sites time out, the client cannot sign in, Friends is disconnected, and multiple game servers fail. The more independent functions fail together, the more reason there is to check for a broader Steam problem; it is still a likelihood, not proof.
Check Steam Friends and restart the client if needed
Look at Steam Friends for signs that the client has lost its network connection. Make sure your status is not set to Offline, and note any message that the Steam Friends network connection has been lost. Steam Support recommends exiting and restarting Steam when the Friends connection is lost.
- Check whether your Steam status is set to Offline; change it if that was not intentional.
- Look for a message that the Steam Friends network connection has been lost.
- If it has, exit Steam fully and start it again.
- If the problem remains and status checks do not point to an outage, continue with the network tests below.
Restarting is especially relevant when Steam reports that Friends has lost its connection. It is a recommended troubleshooting step, not a promise that a restart will solve every connection failure. If the same message returns after Steam starts again, use the status and network checks to determine whether the cause may be broader or local.
A browser that can open a Steam webpage does not prove that the Steam client is connected. Steam Support says the client accesses your account differently, so treat the browser and client as separate tests. If the browser works but the client does not, keep troubleshooting the client connection rather than concluding that everything is healthy.

Test your router and connection
If Steam’s status signals do not suggest a wider outage and restarting the client did not help, check the connection between your device and the internet. Restarting the modem or router may help with a local network fault. If practical, test over a direct wired connection: this can help distinguish a wireless or powerline interference problem from a wider connectivity issue.
- Restart your modem or router as appropriate for your setup.
- Try Steam again once the network equipment has reconnected.
- If you normally use Wi-Fi or powerline networking, test with a direct Ethernet connection if possible.
- Compare the result: if the wired test works while the usual connection does not, investigate the wireless or powerline path rather than treating the result as evidence of a Steam outage.
Change one thing at a time where practical. For example, test after the router reconnects before switching connection types. If you restart equipment and change several settings at once, it becomes harder to tell which change affected the result. Keep track of what works: the usual wireless or powerline connection, a wired test, Steam in a browser, and the client are different comparisons.
A wired test is a way to isolate the network path, not a fix for a Steam service outage. Steam Deck users may need additional USB-C-to-Ethernet hardware to make this test. If you do not have a wired option, continue with the other checks instead of treating the missing test as evidence one way or the other.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsAn Ethernet cable is only relevant if you want to perform this optional comparison. It cannot restore a Steam service that is unavailable, and buying one is not a required troubleshooting step. If you use a Steam Deck, the wired test may also require a compatible USB-C-to-Ethernet adapter. If you do not already have the equipment, you can still continue with the status, client, and network checks.
Review firewall permissions and interfering software
A firewall can block Steam, including after a Steam client update. Check whether Steam is allowed through your firewall and whether other security or network-filtering software could be interfering. Malware can also interfere with connectivity.
- Review firewall permissions for Steam, especially if the problem began after a client update.
- Check whether security software or network filtering is blocking Steam’s connection.
- Do not leave your firewall disabled as a routine workaround. Restore its protection and correct the relevant permission or rule instead.
The timing of the problem can help prioritize this check. If Steam stopped connecting after the client updated, review whether the firewall still permits the client. If a security or filtering application reports a block, investigate its Steam-related rule rather than disabling protection as a standing fix. Avoid treating “turn off the firewall” as a diagnosis: it removes protection and does not establish whether Valve’s services are available.

Changing firewall settings is not a way to confirm a Steam outage. If the same failure persists after checking permissions, continue by considering restrictions imposed by the network you use.

Consider workplace, campus, proxy, or ISP restrictions
University and business networks, as well as proxies, may block ports Steam requires. If Steam works on another network but not on a campus or workplace connection, network policy or filtering is a plausible cause. Use only networks and settings you are authorized to use; do not try to bypass an organization’s access controls.
A comparison with another authorized network can help isolate the restriction. If Steam works elsewhere but not on your campus or workplace connection, that points toward the network environment rather than establishing a Steam outage. Ask the network administrator whether Steam connections are restricted. Steam Support notes that required ports may be blocked; the issue may therefore be a policy or proxy setting rather than a fault in your computer.
A problem that happens only at certain times of day may point to ISP traffic shaping, according to Steam Support. Compare the connection at other times. If the timing pattern persists, contact your ISP and describe when the problem occurs and what you have already tested.
Keep the time pattern specific when you explain the issue: note whether the connection fails at particular hours and whether it works at other times. This gives the ISP a useful pattern to investigate. A time-of-day correlation is a clue, not proof of traffic shaping; Steam Support presents it as a possible explanation, so do not rule out other causes solely on that basis.
Choose the next step based on what failed
- Steam sites time out and several Steam functions are unavailable: Check official Steam status guidance and use a third-party dashboard only as corroboration.
- One game server fails but another works: The failure appears server-specific; do not assume all of Steam is down.
- Friends reports a lost connection: Exit and restart Steam, then reassess the connection.
- The client fails while a Steam webpage loads: Keep investigating the Steam client connection; a working browser page is not a client connectivity test.
- A wired connection works but Wi-Fi or powerline does not: Focus on the local wireless or powerline path.
- The problem occurs on a campus, business, or proxy network, or only at particular times: Consider network restrictions or an ISP pattern and contact the relevant administrator or provider where appropriate.
When asking for help, describe the scope rather than only the error. State whether Steam sites time out, whether the client signs in, whether Friends is connected, whether one or several game servers fail, and whether another network or a wired test changes the result. Include whether the issue began after a client update or follows a time-of-day pattern. These observations do not guarantee a diagnosis, but they make it easier to distinguish a likely service issue from a client, connection, or policy problem.

Frequently Asked Questions
How can I tell whether Steam is down or my connection is the problem?
Start with Steam Support’s status guidance. Then compare what fails: Steam sites, the client, Friends, and game servers. Steam site timeouts and failures across several unrelated functions make a broader issue more plausible, while a failure limited to one server or one network points you toward a narrower cause. None of those clues alone proves the cause.
What does a sharp drop in the Concurrent Steam Users graph mean?
Steam Support says that when you cannot connect to any game servers, a very sharp decline in Concurrent Steam Users may indicate a temporary outage. Treat it as a clue, not proof that every Steam service, game, or region is affected.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
If one Steam game server is unavailable, does that mean Steam is down?
Not necessarily. Try another server for the same game. If another works, Steam Support’s guidance says the original game server is a more likely source than a general Steam outage. If several servers fail, check Steam’s status guidance and your local connection.
Why does Steam work in my browser but not in the Steam client?
A working Steam webpage does not establish that the client is connected. Steam Support says the client accesses your account differently, so check the client connection separately and look for a Steam Friends connection-loss message.
Should I disable my firewall to see if Steam connects?
Do not leave the firewall disabled as a routine workaround. Review whether Steam is permitted, especially if the issue began after a client update, and check for interfering security or network-filtering software. A firewall change does not confirm whether Steam is down.
Do I need an Ethernet cable to troubleshoot Steam?
No. A direct wired connection is an optional test that can help distinguish Wi-Fi or powerline interference from a wider connection problem. It is not a remedy for a Steam service outage. Steam Deck users may need a USB-C-to-Ethernet adapter for this test.
The Tool Desk

University and business networks or proxies may block ports Steam requires. Steam Support also says problems that occur only at certain times of day may indicate ISP traffic shaping. The Bottom Line
Check Steam’s official status guidance, then narrow the problem by testing another game server, Steam Friends, the client, and your network. Use SteamDB’s SteamStat.us only as an unofficial cross-check. A wired connection, firewall review, or network comparison can help isolate a local issue, but none can prove that Steam is down or restore an unavailable service.
