“Starlink Mobile” can mean two different services. Starlink Roam uses a Starlink terminal, such as the portable Starlink Mini, to provide internet; Direct to Cell uses a participating mobile carrier to connect compatible LTE phones to satellites without a Starlink dish. The correct availability check depends on which service you mean.
For dish-based service, enter your exact address on Starlink’s availability map, then check the Roam order flow if you plan to travel. For Direct to Cell, ask your mobile carrier to confirm current local coverage, plan eligibility, phone compatibility and supported features. A country appearing on a map or a carrier appearing in an announcement does not guarantee service at your particular location.
First decide which Starlink mobile service you need
The word mobile is often used for two products that work very differently. Identifying the product first prevents a misleading coverage check.

Starlink Roam: portable internet from a terminal
Starlink Roam is dish-based satellite internet. You bring a Starlink terminal to a permitted location, power it, and connect your devices over Wi-Fi. Starlink Mini is the compact portable hardware option most closely associated with this use case. It is still a terminal: it does not turn an ordinary smartphone into a satellite phone.

- This is not Starlink. You will not receive a warranty with this bundle created by an outside seller.
Availability is checked through two Starlink tools. The availability map evaluates a specific service address and shows whether service is available or pending. The Roam order flow evaluates whether a country currently offers a Roam plan and displays the plans available there. A country can be eligible for Roam while a particular address has different capacity or plan conditions.
Direct to Cell: satellite connectivity through a mobile carrier
Direct to Cell is a carrier service. A participating operator uses the satellite network to connect compatible 4G LTE phones in areas where terrestrial coverage is unavailable or limited. You do not buy or aim a Starlink dish for this service.
SpaceX stated in February 2025 that commercial satellite messaging was available to T-Mobile customers in the United States and One NZ customers in New Zealand. That was a dated launch statement, not a complete worldwide list for 2026. Current availability, eligibility and features must be confirmed with the carrier that bills your phone.

How to check Starlink service at your exact address
- Open Starlink’s availability map. Use the service-address search rather than relying on a country name or a broad regional view.
- Enter the complete address. Include the street number, locality, postal code and country. If the map uses a pin, place it on the actual property or installation area.
- Read the status shown for that location. The map distinguishes locations that are available now from locations pending coverage or regulatory approval.
- Review the plan presented for the address. The plan shown is the practical offer for that location at that time; do not assume that a plan seen elsewhere is also orderable at your address.
- Check the order details before paying. Confirm the service address, shipping destination, recurring plan, equipment charges and any stated limitations. Save a copy of the displayed offer because availability and plan choices can change.
What an available result does and does not prove
An available result means Starlink is offering a service option for that address through the map and order process. It is not a guarantee of uninterrupted connectivity at every point on the property. Starlink’s own country-level service claims do not establish capacity or an identical plan at every address.
If the result is pending, the location may be waiting for additional satellite coverage, capacity or regulatory approval. A pending label is not the same as a rejection, but it also is not an orderable service promise. Recheck the map later rather than treating the pending date as guaranteed.
If the map cannot find your address
- Try the formal postal version of the address, including the country and postal code.
- Move the map pin to the proposed terminal location and check whether the status changes.
- Check that you are using the service address, not only a billing or parcel-delivery address.
- If the location remains unrecognized or pending, contact Starlink support with the exact coordinates and address format.
How to check Starlink Roam availability for travel
- Open the Roam ordering flow. Select the country where you intend to use the terminal.
- Look for an offered Roam plan. Starlink says that if a country is absent from the selector, Roam is not currently available there.
- Read the plan’s geographic and usage terms. Plans, permitted locations and in-motion permissions can differ by market.
- Repeat the check for every country on your route. A plan available in your home country does not automatically establish permission or service in another country.
- Recheck shortly before departure. Country eligibility, capacity, regulatory approvals and displayed plans are changeable.
Starlink’s availability map has recently described Roam travel service in over 150 markets. That figure refers to Roam travel markets, not Direct to Cell coverage, and it should be treated as a changing snapshot rather than a guarantee for every location within those markets.
Cross-border travel is not the same as local signal coverage
A Roam plan can be offered for a country while a specific campsite, vessel, border area or protected zone remains restricted. Confirm the country in the order selector, then check local rules for the exact place and type of use. Keep the plan confirmation available while travelling because a map listing alone does not describe every operational restriction.

How to check Direct to Cell availability with your phone carrier
- Identify the carrier that provides your mobile service. Direct to Cell eligibility is attached to the operator and account, not simply to the phone’s brand.
- Ask whether satellite messaging or another Direct to Cell feature is live in your area. Request a current answer for your town, travel route or intended region.
- Confirm plan eligibility. Ask whether the feature is included, requires a particular plan, has a separate charge or is limited to selected customers.
- Confirm phone compatibility. Ask whether your exact LTE model and software version are supported. A phone being LTE-capable does not by itself prove that the carrier enables satellite service on it.
- Ask which functions work. Messaging, emergency functions, data and voice are separate capabilities. Do not infer that one supported feature means all of them work.
- Ask about geographic and regulatory limits. Coverage may differ by country, territory, maritime area and local authorization.
- Test the feature using the carrier’s instructions. Follow its activation and visibility guidance, and ask how the phone indicates that it has switched to satellite connectivity.
What the dated launch statements establish
In February 2025, SpaceX described commercial satellite messaging for T-Mobile customers in the United States and One NZ customers in New Zealand. Its announcement used this wording:
“Starlink Direct to Cell service is now commercially available in the United States and New Zealand, enabling satellite messaging service for 4G LTE mobile phones.”
The statement establishes the scope of that announcement: two named markets, two named operators and messaging for 4G LTE phones at that time. It does not establish a current 2026 offer for every subscriber, every phone model or every feature.
A 2024 SpaceX progress report named additional operator partners, including Optus, Rogers, KDDI, Salt, Entel in Chile and Peru, and Kyivstar. Being named as a partner is not proof that a consumer service is live today, that every subscriber is eligible or that all partners provide the same functions. Ask the operator for the current offer instead of relying on a partner list.

What coverage should you expect?
For fixed or Roam terminals
- Address status matters most. Use the exact location rather than a national map label.
- Capacity can vary by location. A country or region shown as served does not confirm an available plan at every address.
- Plan terms control portability. Roam eligibility in one country does not automatically authorize use in another.
- Regulatory approval can change the result. A location may remain pending until the required approval or coverage is in place.
The map and order flow are therefore the best practical indicators for dish-based service. They answer whether Starlink is offering a product for the address or country, not whether a connection will be uninterrupted at every moment.
For Direct to Cell
- Carrier participation is required. A Starlink satellite overhead does not create a consumer service without a participating operator.
- Your account and phone matter. The carrier must support the feature for your plan and exact LTE handset.
- Features are not interchangeable. A messaging launch does not imply voice, broadband data or emergency access unless the carrier says so.
- Coverage claims are time-sensitive. Operator launches, approvals and supported areas can change independently of the Starlink map.
SpaceX’s 2025 progress reporting said Direct to Cell had connected more than 12 million people at least once. That is a company-reported cumulative figure, not a promise that 12 million people have continuous coverage or that the service is available to every customer in a named market.

In-motion use requires a separate check. Starlink says land and territorial-water in-motion operation depends on government approval and can be restricted. Before using a terminal in a vehicle or vessel:
- Read the applicable Starlink plan terms for in-motion operation.
- Check the rules in every country and territorial water where the terminal will operate.
- Confirm whether the permission covers the speed, vehicle or vessel type and route you intend to use.
- Do not assume that a stationary Roam plan permits operation while driving or sailing.
A terminal can be technically capable of connecting and still be unauthorized for a particular journey. Local regulation is part of the availability decision.
Starlink Mini versus Direct to Cell
| Question | Starlink Mini and other terminals | Direct to Cell |
|---|---|---|
| Does it need a Starlink dish or terminal? | Yes | No |
| Does it use a normal mobile phone? | The terminal provides Wi-Fi for connected devices | Yes, if the carrier supports the exact LTE phone |
| How is availability checked? | Address map or Roam country selector | Participating carrier’s current offer |
| What is the main use? | Portable broadband internet | Carrier-provided satellite features, beginning with messaging in the dated 2025 launch statement |
| Does Mini make Direct to Cell work? | No | No terminal is required |
Starlink describes Mini as compact portable hardware, but its help information says plan compatibility varies by market. Mini is relevant when you want dish-based portable internet; it is not a prerequisite for Direct to Cell. Starlink also lists Amazon among authorized United States retailers, although inventory and availability depend on location and can change.
Troubleshooting common availability results
The map says available, but the order shows no plan
Recheck the exact service address and the country selected during checkout. The map may show regional availability while the order flow applies a different plan, capacity or regulatory condition. If the discrepancy persists, ask Starlink support to reconcile the map result with the order screen before purchasing.
The map says pending
Pending means the location is not currently presented as fully orderable. It may be waiting for coverage, capacity or regulatory approval. Keep the address saved and check again; do not treat an estimated date as a firm activation promise.
Your country is missing from Roam
Starlink says a country absent from the Roam selector is not currently available for Roam. Do not substitute a nearby country’s plan unless Starlink’s terms explicitly permit that use.

Partner announcements can precede a consumer launch or apply only to selected plans, devices or regions. Ask the carrier for the live product name, activation path, supported phone list and current coverage area.
Direct to Cell works for someone else but not you
Compare the carrier, account plan, phone model, software version and location. Direct to Cell eligibility is not transferable between operators, and a feature available in one country may not be enabled in another.
A practical checklist before you rely on Starlink mobile coverage
- Have you identified whether you need Roam internet or Direct to Cell?
- For a terminal, did you enter the exact service address rather than rely on a country label?
- For travel, did you check every country in the Roam selector?
- For a phone, did your carrier confirm your account, exact LTE model and requested features?
- Did you distinguish messaging from voice and data?
- For vehicle or vessel use, did you verify the current plan and local government permissions?
- Did you record the date of the availability result and plan shown?
Because Starlink plans, map capacity, regulatory status and carrier offers change, repeat these checks when you move, change plans, replace your phone or plan a new trip. The most reliable answer is the current address result for a terminal or the current eligibility confirmation from your carrier for Direct to Cell.
