To check NBN 500 availability, enter your complete address in nbn’s official Check address tool. The result shows the network status for your specific premise. If it is ready to connect, ask a retail phone or internet provider to confirm that it can sell a 500 Mbps plan at that exact address. The nbn result and the provider’s plan qualification are separate checks.
What “NBN 500” actually means
“NBN 500” normally refers to a retail plan based on nbn’s Home Fast II wholesale speed tier. nbn lists this tier at 500 Mbps download and 50 Mbps upload on Fibre to the Premises (FTTP) and Hybrid Fibre Coaxial (HFC) connections. Those are the wholesale speed-plan figures, not a guarantee that every address, provider or household can order the tier.
| Item | What is established | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Wholesale tier | Home Fast II | This is the nbn speed tier associated with the 500 Mbps service. |
| Advertised wholesale speeds | 500 Mbps download / 50 Mbps upload | Download affects activities such as large file transfers and streaming; upload affects sending files, cloud backups and live publishing. |
| Access technologies listed by nbn | FTTP and HFC | Your premise must use a technology and service qualification that supports the tier. |
| Retail availability | Depends on participating providers and service qualification | A connected premise is not automatically eligible for a 500 Mbps retail plan from every provider. |
Use the figures as a way to identify the plan you want to ask for. Do not infer availability from the speed name alone: the address checker, the access technology at the premise and the provider’s qualification system determine what can actually be ordered.
Check the address in nbn’s official tool
- Open the official checker. Go to nbn’s Check address page.
- Enter the complete premise address. Use the street number, street name, suburb, state and postcode requested by the form. Select the matching address rather than a nearby property, unit or lot.
- Read the premise status. The checker may report that the address is ready to connect, more work is required, planned for the address, not currently available, or not available in the building.
- Use the map if there is no match. If the text search cannot find the address, use the map supplied by the checker and reposition the pin. A failed text lookup is not proof that nbn service is unavailable.
- Record the result. Note the exact address selected, the status wording and any technology or timing information shown. You will need those details when speaking with a provider.
nbn advises consumers to check an address before calling a home internet provider. Its guidance is available in A guide to getting connected and explains that the address result determines the appropriate next step.

Interpret the result before contacting a provider
The status describes network and premise readiness. It does not list every retail plan sold at the address. Use the status as a decision point rather than as a promise of a particular speed.
| Checker status | What it indicates | What to do next |
|---|---|---|
| Ready to connect | nbn records the premise as able to proceed with a connection. | Contact a participating phone or internet provider and ask it to qualify a 500 Mbps plan for the exact premise. |
| More work required | Additional network or premise work is still shown as necessary. | Follow the instructions shown by nbn and check again when the work status changes. Do not assume a provider can order Home Fast II immediately. |
| Planned for the address | The address is associated with a future rollout or planned work rather than an immediately orderable connection. | Use the timing or follow-up information displayed by the checker and recheck later. A planned status is not current 500 Mbps availability. |
| Not currently available | The checker does not show an orderable nbn connection at the time of the lookup. | Read any qualification or follow-up instructions and check again if nbn updates the premise status. |
| Not available in the building | The result indicates that the building is not currently shown as available for an nbn connection. | Use the building-specific guidance from the checker. A nearby house having nbn service does not establish eligibility for this building. |
Status labels can change as rollout and connection work progresses. Keep a copy of the result’s wording and date so you can explain the situation accurately if a provider’s system shows a different outcome.
Ask a provider to qualify a 500 Mbps plan
When the premise is ready to connect, the next check belongs to the retail provider. nbn states that availability is subject to participating providers and service qualification. Ask the provider to check the exact address, not merely the suburb or postcode.

- Is this exact premise eligible for a 500 Mbps download plan?
- What upload speed is included, and is the advertised service 500/50 Mbps?
- Which nbn access technology does your check show for this address?
- What typical busy-period download and upload speeds does the plan advertise?
- Are there any installation, activation, contract, data-use or other conditions?
- Is the quoted availability conditional on further nbn work or an on-site qualification?
Do not treat a provider’s generic “500 Mbps” advertising as confirmation until the provider has run its service-qualification check. Conversely, an nbn checker result that says the premise is ready does not mean every provider participates at that address or offers the same tier.
Compare provider offers without confusing them with nbn status
Once at least one provider confirms eligibility, compare the offers using the same address and the same service requirements. Current provider prices and named plan offers are not established here, so obtain those directly from providers at the time you order.

| Comparison point | What to verify |
|---|---|
| Address eligibility | The provider has accepted the complete premise address and confirmed that the 500 Mbps tier can be ordered there. |
| Access technology | The technology shown by the provider, such as FTTP or HFC, matches the service qualification for the premise. |
| Download speed | The plan’s advertised download rate, and whether it is described as a maximum, tier rate or typical busy-period result. |
| Upload speed | The advertised upload rate; nbn’s Home Fast II wholesale figure is 50 Mbps, but retail plan terms should be read separately. |
| Busy-period performance | The provider-reported typical evening or busy-period speeds, where supplied. |
| Price and conditions | Current monthly charge, introductory period, setup or activation fees, contract term, data policy and any equipment conditions. |
A provider may offer a different retail speed profile from the wholesale tier name you expected, so confirm both download and upload figures in the written plan details before accepting the order.
Understand the technology qualification
nbn’s residential speed-plan information lists Home Fast II for FTTP and HFC. That does not mean every FTTP or HFC address can obtain it, nor does it establish availability on other access technologies. The premise’s recorded technology, network configuration and service qualification all matter.
Ask the provider which technology it has on file and whether the qualification is complete. If the provider cannot confirm the technology or returns a lower maximum tier, ask whether the limitation is caused by the nbn premise record, a required upgrade, the provider’s network design or the plan range it sells. Those causes lead to different next steps, so a generic “not available” answer is not enough to explain the difference.
What speeds should you expect after ordering?
The 500/50 Mbps figures identify the plan tier, but actual performance can vary. nbn notes that results depend on network configuration, busy-period demand, the provider’s design, equipment and setup, and the devices used. Wi-Fi conditions and an older device can therefore produce a lower speed test even when the ordered service is correctly provisioned.
The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission’s Measuring Broadband Australia report for April 2026 recorded an average download speed of 482.9 Mbps for the 500 Mbps plan category, or 96.6% of plan speed. That is a measured category-level result across participating services, not a prediction for a particular address, provider, connection or household. It should not be used as a guarantee that your line will test at 482.9 Mbps.

Troubleshoot an address lookup that fails
The address is not found
Check spelling, street type, suburb, state and postcode, then try the map and move the pin to the premise. Select the exact unit or lot where the checker offers multiple matches. Because nbn provides the map alternative, a failed text search alone cannot establish that the network is absent.
The checker and provider disagree
Give the provider the exact premise selected in the checker and ask it to repeat the qualification. The checker describes nbn’s address and network status; the provider decides which retail services it can sell after its own service-qualification process. Ask what specific field or condition produced the provider’s result rather than assuming one system is a universal plan catalogue.
The result says more work is required or planned
Do not place an order on the assumption that the future status is already active. Follow the checker’s instructions, note any stated timing and recheck the address after the status changes. A planned or work-in-progress result can require a later provider qualification.
The building is marked unavailable
Check the result for building-specific instructions and use the exact building address in any later lookup. Service at a neighbouring property does not prove that the building itself can receive the same connection or speed tier.
What you do not need for the eligibility check
You do not need a router, modem-router, nbn connection box or Ethernet cable to run the online address lookup. Those items can affect installation and later service performance, but they are not prerequisites for checking whether the premise appears eligible for NBN 500. Wait for the provider to explain any equipment or installation requirements after it confirms the service.

Keep a simple record of your result
Save the checker’s result, the exact premise address, the date of the lookup and any status or technology wording. When you contact providers, use the same address formatting and ask each one to run its qualification before discussing plan features. Recording the answers makes it easier to distinguish an nbn rollout issue from a provider-specific limitation and to follow up if the status changes.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Checking only a postcode: neighbouring premises can have different technologies, rollout stages or building records.
- Assuming “ready” means 500 Mbps: readiness confirms a connection pathway, not every retail tier.
- Comparing speed names only: two plans called 500 Mbps may publish different upload rates, busy-period speeds, fees or conditions.
- Treating a speed test as an eligibility test: performance testing is relevant after activation and can be affected by Wi-Fi, devices and network demand.
- Buying equipment first: a router or cable cannot change the premise status shown by nbn.
A practical decision path
- Look up the exact premise with nbn’s Check address tool.
- Classify the result as ready, work required, planned or unavailable.
- If ready, request provider qualification for a 500 Mbps plan at that exact address.
- Verify technology and speeds, including both download and upload figures.
- Compare current provider terms using price, conditions and typical busy-period information.
- Keep expectations realistic: the 500/50 tier and the ACCC category result describe broad service performance, not a guaranteed household test result.
nbn’s consumer campaign also directs people to check their address before contacting a provider; see Connecting to community and Made for more speed for that guidance and the associated speed qualifications.
The bottom line
Start with the official address result, then get a provider to qualify the exact 500 Mbps retail plan. nbn’s Home Fast II specification is 500 Mbps down and 50 Mbps up on FTTP and HFC, but premise status, provider participation, service qualification and real-world conditions determine whether you can order it and what performance you experience.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I get NBN 500 at my address?
Check the exact premise on nbn’s official Check address page first. If it is ready to connect, a participating retail provider must still confirm that its 500 Mbps plan is available after running its service-qualification check.
Does a ready-to-connect result guarantee NBN 500?
No. It indicates that the premise can proceed with an nbn connection. It does not guarantee that every provider participates at the address or sells the Home Fast II-based 500 Mbps tier there.

What download and upload speeds does NBN 500 use?
nbn lists Home Fast II at 500 Mbps download and 50 Mbps upload on FTTP and HFC. Retail plans should be checked separately because providers may describe speeds and conditions differently.
What if nbn cannot find my address?
Check the full address details and use the map in the checker to reposition the pin on the premise. A failed text search alone is not proof that nbn service is unavailable.
Can I order NBN 500 if my status says planned or more work required?
Do not assume so. Follow the instructions and timing shown by nbn, then recheck after the status changes. Provider qualification generally needs an orderable premise.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWhy does my provider say no when nbn says ready?
The two systems answer different questions. nbn reports premise and network status, while the provider determines which retail services it can sell and must qualify the address in its own system. Ask the provider what specific condition limits the offer.
Is 482.9 Mbps guaranteed on a 500 Mbps plan?
No. The ACCC’s April 2026 report measured 482.9 Mbps as the average download speed for the 500 Mbps plan category, equal to 96.6% of plan speed. It is a category result, not a promise for an individual household.
Do I need a router or NBN connection box to check availability?
No. Eligibility is checked online with the address tool. Equipment can affect installation and later performance but is not needed for the lookup.
The Bottom Line
Use nbn’s official checker for the exact premise, then ask a provider to qualify its 500 Mbps plan. Home Fast II is listed at 500/50 Mbps on FTTP and HFC, but the address status, provider participation, service qualification and real-world conditions decide what you can order and experience.
