In most cases, keep magnets off a SMART Board’s interactive screen. SMART specifically warns against attaching magnets to M700/M700V screens, and its guidance for 800 and M600/M600V boards explains that magnets can obstruct optical touch sensing. The exception is a designed feature, not a general rule: SMART Board 6000/6000 Pro displays have magnetic pen holders on the bottom frame.
Can you put magnets on a SMART Board?
For the SMART Board M700/M700V, 800, and M600/M600V families covered by SMART’s guidance, do not treat the interactive surface like an ordinary magnetic whiteboard. Keep magnets off the screen and sensing area. The reason is functional: on optical systems, an attachment can block the cameras or interfere with touch detection.

Why a magnet can interfere with touch
These cited interactive whiteboards use optical sensing. Their cameras need an unobstructed view to detect touch. A magnet attached to the interactive area can block that view, so the board may fail to register touches consistently or may respond inaccurately. The concern is obstruction of the sensing system; SMART’s guidance does not establish a safe magnet strength or a general approval for magnetic accessories on the screen.
Does the 6000/6000 Pro pen holder mean magnets are safe?
No. SMART Board 6000/6000 Pro displays have magnetic holders on the bottom frame for their designed pens. SMART instructs users to use pens designed for those series and center each pen in its holder so it does not fall. What to do if touch or ink behaves erratically
If touch alignment becomes inaccurate, the pointer moves unpredictably, or digital ink has gaps, remove magnets, stickers, or adhesive tape that may be blocking the optical touch system on the cited models. This is a supported troubleshooting step, not proof that an attachment caused every touch problem. Follow the full troubleshooting procedure for your specific model. - Check whether touch and writing improve after the area is clear.

Check the exact model before attaching anything
SMART’s instructions vary by product family, so identify the model before using an accessory. Do not extend the 6000/6000 Pro frame pen-holder feature to other series, or interpret it as permission to put magnets on any interactive screen. For the SMART Board 480, the cited maintenance guidance addresses adhesive tape but does not give a magnet-specific warning; consult that model’s documentation rather than inferring a rule from another family.
