Start with the current AWS model card for the exact GPT-6 variant you plan to use, then verify your own account with GetFoundationModelAvailability. The GPT-6 Astra documentation currently lists openai.gpt-6-astra on the bedrock-mantle endpoint only in us-west-2 (Oregon). On bedrock-runtime, it uses cross-Region inference profiles—us.openai.gpt-6-astra or global.openai.gpt-6-astra—rather than an In-Region base-model invocation.
A model appearing in AWS documentation does not prove that your account can invoke it. The account API reports agreement, authorization, entitlement, and regional availability, while the model card explains whether a request stays in one Region or can be routed elsewhere.
What “available” means in Bedrock
There are several separate checks behind the word available:
- AWS must document the model for the Bedrock endpoint you intend to call.
- Your source Region must support that endpoint or inference profile.
- Your account must have the required agreement, authorization, and entitlement state.
- Your identity must have permission to discover and invoke the model.
- Your request must use the exact model or inference-profile ID for that endpoint.
These conditions are independent. A model can be documented for a Region while your account is not authorized, or your account can be authorized while the ID you used belongs to a different endpoint. Availability and entitlements can change, so perform the check immediately before deployment using the live account and the current AWS tables.

The current AWS documentation reviewed for this guide identifies GPT-6 Astra. Do not treat “GPT-6” as a single universal ID: another GPT-6 variant can have different Regions, profiles, or endpoint requirements.
Confirm the exact GPT-6 model and endpoint
Read the GPT-6 Astra model card first
Open AWS’s GPT-6 Astra model card and note the endpoint, model ID, supported source Regions, cross-Region mode, and service tier. The card is the authoritative starting point for the variant, not a third-party list or an old configuration file.
Choose between Bedrock Mantle and Bedrock Runtime

For Mantle, AWS documents the OpenAI-compatible base URL as https://bedrock-mantle.us-west-2.api.aws/openai/v1. For Runtime, the base URL pattern is https://bedrock-runtime.{region}.amazonaws.com/openai/v1; replace {region} with the source Region in which you are making the request.

The model card lists support for the standard service tier. It does not list Priority or Flex for this model, so do not select those tiers when planning a GPT-6 Astra deployment.
Is GPT-6 available in my AWS region?
Distinguish source Region from processing Region
Your AWS SDK or endpoint Region is the source Region. With In-Region inference, processing remains in that one Region. With cross-Region inference, the source Region is where you submit the request, not necessarily where the request is processed.

A source Region that appears in a Geo or Global table therefore means “you may submit from here,” not “the model will run here.” Select the mode that matches your contractual, regulatory, and data-residency obligations. AWS explains these distinctions in its regional availability by models documentation.
Regions shown for the Runtime profiles
The GPT-6 Astra card lists Geo and Global cross-Region support in us-east-1, us-east-2, us-west-1, us-west-2, and ca-central-1. It also lists Global support in the European and Asia-Pacific Regions shown in the card, plus São Paulo. Because AWS can add or remove entries, use the current regional table for the complete set rather than treating this list as permanent.
The special case of Bedrock Mantle
The Mantle entry is narrower: AWS lists openai.gpt-6-astra only for us-west-2 (Oregon). If your application requires Mantle’s API compatibility, a different source Region is not an alternative Mantle location for this model; you must use the documented Oregon endpoint or choose a Runtime profile that meets your residency requirements.
How to check GPT-6 access in the AWS console
The console check is useful for a quick human confirmation, but it does not replace the account API check for automation or deployment gates.
- Sign in to the target AWS account. Use the account, role, or organization member that will actually run the application. A check made from a different account can produce a misleading result.
- Open Amazon Bedrock in the intended source Region. Choose the Region in the console selector before opening the model catalog. For Mantle, select
us-west-2. For Runtime, select a source Region listed for the profile you intend to use. - Open Model catalog and find the exact variant. Search for GPT-6 Astra and open its model details. Confirm whether the page refers to
bedrock-mantle, a Geo profile, or a Global profile. - Open the model in a playground. AWS states that access to Bedrock foundation models is enabled by default. The playground is still a practical way to expose an account-specific access or configuration error before you integrate an application.
- Record the identifier shown by the console. Copy the exact model or inference-profile ID instead of typing a shortened name. Keep the ID with the endpoint and source Region in your deployment configuration.
- Run a minimal test only after checking residency. A successful Global-profile test can be technically valid while violating a requirement that data remain in a particular geography. Confirm the routing mode before sending sensitive prompts.
If the model does not appear, do not conclude immediately that GPT-6 is unavailable in the Region. The console may be showing a different endpoint, variant, or account context. Use the discovery APIs and account-availability operation below.

How to check Bedrock model access for your account with the API
Call GetFoundationModelAvailability
AWS’s GetFoundationModelAvailability API reference is the account-specific check. Query the exact model ID and the Region relevant to your planned call. The response exposes four decisions that public regional tables cannot establish for you:

Use the exact ID that matches your endpoint. For example, a Mantle check uses openai.gpt-6-astra in us-west-2; a Runtime check should use the Runtime model or profile ID exposed for the source Region, such as us.openai.gpt-6-astra or global.openai.gpt-6-astra.
Example CLI checks
If your AWS CLI version exposes this Bedrock operation, the following commands illustrate the two documented GPT-6 Astra ID choices. Run them with credentials for the account and Region you are evaluating:

--model-id us.openai.gpt-6-astraThe second command is an example of a Geo profile from a listed Runtime source Region. If your design uses Global routing, query global.openai.gpt-6-astra instead. AWS can change IDs or regional support, so copy the current value from discovery rather than hard-coding an older value.
Interpret the result as a set of gates
- Region gate: If
regionAvailabilityisNOT_AVAILABLE, the queried account-and-Region combination is not currently available for that ID. Check the current model card and regional table before changing code. - Authorization gate:
NOT_AUTHORIZEDmeans the account is not authorized, even if the model is publicly documented for that Region. - Entitlement gate:
NOT_AVAILABLEunderentitlementAvailabilityindicates that the account lacks an available entitlement for the query. - Agreement gate: A missing or incomplete agreement state must be resolved before invocation can succeed.
- Permission gate: A positive model-availability response does not grant IAM permissions. The calling principal still needs permission to discover or invoke the relevant Bedrock resource.
Store the complete response, including the model ID and Region you queried, with deployment diagnostics. That record makes it possible to tell an account change from a code or routing mistake.

How to discover the ID AWS exposes to your account
Use Runtime discovery APIs
For bedrock-runtime, AWS recommends ListFoundationModels and ListInferenceProfiles. Use the foundation-model list to see model metadata and the inference-profile list to find the profile IDs that can be invoked from your source Region. Discovery is safer than assuming that a human-readable name maps directly to an invocation ID.
AWS’s Get list of models guide describes these discovery paths. Filter the returned records for the GPT-6 Astra variant, then retain the ID, endpoint type, and supported Regions together. If the profile is not returned, check the account and Region used by the SDK before treating it as a service-wide absence.
Use Mantle’s OpenAI-compatible models endpoint
For bedrock-mantle, AWS directs clients to the OpenAI-compatible /models endpoint for discovery. The inference path uses /openai/v1, but discovery is still performed through /models. In the documented configuration, the base URL is https://bedrock-mantle.us-west-2.api.aws/openai/v1 and the model ID is openai.gpt-6-astra.
Keep discovery and invocation pointed at the same endpoint family. Finding an ID through Runtime and sending it to Mantle, or finding a Mantle ID and sending it as a Runtime profile, creates an endpoint/identifier mismatch even when the account is authorized.

The model is documented, but the account is not authorized
AWS documentation describes service availability; it does not certify every account. Query authorizationStatus, entitlementAvailability, and agreementAvailability for the account that owns the workload. A public model page and a NOT_AUTHORIZED response are not contradictory.

You used the wrong endpoint or ID
Use openai.gpt-6-astra only with the documented Mantle configuration. Use us.openai.gpt-6-astra or global.openai.gpt-6-astra for the corresponding Runtime cross-Region profile. Also verify that the hostname belongs to the same endpoint family as the ID.
You assumed cross-Region means In-Region processing
A Runtime request submitted in us-east-1 can be routed to another supported Region. Geo routing stays within its defined geography; Global routing can use supported commercial Regions worldwide. If your policy requires single-Region processing, a cross-Region profile is the wrong choice even if the API call succeeds.
You selected a source Region not listed for the profile
Check the current Runtime table for the exact profile and source Region. The list can change independently of your application release. Do not infer that every AWS Region supports every GPT-6 Astra profile.

IAM permissions or quotas block the request
After availability is positive, inspect the caller’s IAM permissions, request quotas, and service-tier settings. The model card notes that accounts have default quotas and that Region and other account factors can affect them. A quota or authorization error is not proof that the model is absent from the Region.
The console and SDK use different account contexts
Confirm the AWS account ID, assumed role, profile, and Region in both tests. A console session in one account and an SDK credential chain in another can produce different availability results without any service change.
Choosing the right GPT-6 Astra path

Make the endpoint decision before writing application code. It determines the model ID, hostname, source-Region test, and data-residency behavior that your deployment must document.
A repeatable pre-deployment checklist
- Identify the exact GPT-6 variant, currently GPT-6 Astra in the AWS material cited here.
- Open the current GPT-6 Astra model card and record the endpoint and ID.
- Check the current regional availability table for the source Region and routing mode.
- Decide whether In-Region, Geo Cross-Region, or Global Cross-Region processing satisfies your residency policy.
- Run
GetFoundationModelAvailabilityin the target account and inspect agreement, authorization, entitlement, and regional fields. - Discover Runtime IDs with
ListFoundationModelsandListInferenceProfiles, or use Mantle’s/modelsendpoint. - Verify that the hostname, endpoint family, source Region, and model/profile ID all match.
- Confirm IAM permissions and quotas for the principal that will invoke the model.
- Run a low-risk test from the same account, role, credentials, and Region used in production.
- Save the date, account, Region, endpoint, ID, and availability response so a later change can be diagnosed.
Where to recheck when availability changes
Use AWS’s Using models with Bedrock reference for current foundation-model access behavior, the model-discovery guide for IDs exposed to your account, and the availability API reference for account-level status. These checks are more reliable than a cached list because model entitlements, regional support, and account authorization are operationally changeable.
