There is no universal Samsung indicator that says “GOS caused this frame-rate drop.” You can still investigate systematically: record your Galaxy model and software, reproduce the same game scene, monitor frame and CPU/GPU behavior, compare Game Booster settings, and repeat the test as the phone heats. A repeatable FPS decline after sustained play is evidence of a performance problem and may fit thermal throttling, but it does not by itself identify Game Optimizing Service (GOS) as the cause.
What GOS does—and what throttling means
Game Optimizing Service is Samsung software that monitors the device while a game is running. Samsung describes it as an optimization service intended to reduce excessive lag, performance reduction and power consumption; its basic optimization can include maintaining frame rate. GOS is therefore a game-management component, not a name for every slowdown a phone can experience.
Throttling is a separate description of what the phone does when it limits performance. Samsung’s S22-specific support explanation says the phone controls itself when its temperature rises so the temperature does not continue above a certain threshold. That thermal control remains relevant even after software changes discussed in the 2022 S22 FAQ. The statement is historical and model-specific; it does not establish that every current Galaxy phone uses identical thresholds or behavior.
In practice, GOS settings, the game, system temperature, battery state, firmware, display settings and background activity can all affect frame rate. A useful test can show a correlation—such as performance falling after the device becomes hot—but it cannot automatically assign responsibility to GOS.

What your test can and cannot establish

Samsung’s published material does not provide a universal GOS event log, numerical cutoff or official pass/fail procedure that attributes an individual drop to GOS. Treat the result as troubleshooting evidence, not proof of causation.
Why benchmark results can mislead
GOS is designed around game workloads. Samsung’s S22 explanation distinguishes benchmark tools from games, so a synthetic benchmark may not receive the same treatment as the title you are investigating. A high benchmark score does not rule out a game-specific frame cap, and a low score does not prove GOS is limiting the game. Use a real, repeatable game scene for the primary comparison, and treat benchmarks only as a separate reference.
Prepare a repeatable comparison
Record the variables that matter
- Exact Galaxy model and storage or regional variant, if known.
- One UI version and Android version shown in the phone’s software information.
- The game version, graphics preset, resolution, refresh-rate option and frame-rate cap.
- Game Booster’s current overall performance mode and any per-game FPS or resolution setting.
- Whether the phone is charging, the battery percentage, and whether a case or other heat source is present.
- Where the slowdown occurs: immediately, after a fixed number of minutes, or only in a particular scene.
Do not change several settings between runs. If the game updates, One UI changes, or the phone is in a different power state, start a new comparison and note that break.
Choose a repeatable game segment
Use the same level, replay, training area or other scene that you can reach consistently. A busy fight, loading transition or network event can create a temporary drop unrelated to thermal control. Run the segment from a similar starting point and for a defined duration. A practical design is one short run from a relatively cool phone followed by a longer run that continues until the behavior appears.
Keep ordinary conditions consistent
Use the same display brightness, network connection and game settings. Avoid installing or updating apps during the test. If you normally play while charging, either keep the charger connected for every run or disconnect it for every run; charging can change heat and power behavior. Do not describe a single unusually good or bad run as a conclusion.
Step-by-step check for a possible GOS-related limit
- Capture a baseline. Write down the model, One UI version, game settings and Game Booster mode. Take a screenshot of the relevant Game Booster page if the labels are available on your phone.
- Start from a comparable state. Let the phone return to approximately the same idle condition before each run. Record whether it is warm, charging and near the same battery percentage. Exact laboratory temperature is not required for a home comparison, but large differences should be noted.
- Run the selected scene without changing settings. Record the frame behavior at the beginning and after sustained play. Note the elapsed time when a decline starts, whether it recovers, and whether the drop affects the whole game or one effect-heavy scene.
- Use an overlay when your model supports one. Samsung describes Perf Z as showing basic resource occupancy on screen in real time. Samsung’s developer documentation also describes GPUWatch as showing GPU and CPU activity and frame details. Record the values or capture video so you can compare runs. Neither tool is presented by Samsung as a GOS-causation detector.
- Check the available Game Booster controls. Open the performance mode and per-game FPS or resolution controls. Record the original values before changing anything. One UI 7 documentation says Game Booster can set overall performance and, per game, performance level, FPS, resolution and frame booster; the controls shown can vary by model and software version.
- Change one performance variable. If your phone offers a performance-oriented mode or an alternate management option, change only that item and repeat the same scene. Samsung warns that activating game performance management may increase heat or battery consumption while the game is running.
- Repeat each condition. Run the original condition and the changed condition more than once, preferably alternating them so the phone’s changing temperature does not line up with only one setting. Compare the start-of-run and end-of-run behavior rather than selecting the best result.
- Interpret the pattern conservatively. A consistent change is useful evidence that the setting or conditions matter. A decline that tracks rising heat is compatible with thermal throttling. Neither pattern alone proves that GOS generated the limit.
Use a simple test matrix
A small matrix makes the comparison easier to explain than a collection of unrelated screenshots. For example, record at least two runs in the original mode and two in the changed mode. For each run, note average or observed FPS at the start, FPS after sustained play, elapsed time to the first decline, phone temperature by touch or any available reading, and whether the game recovered after cooling.

Alternating conditions is preferable to running every original test first and every changed test later. Otherwise, room temperature, battery level or a software process could explain the difference. This is a practical troubleshooting design, not a Samsung-certified diagnostic protocol.

Game Booster performance modes
Samsung’s One UI 7 guide says Game Booster can set an overall performance level and, where supported, per-game performance level, FPS, resolution and frame booster. Samsung’s India support material describes three modes:

Labels and availability differ by Galaxy model, region and software version. If a mode is absent, record that fact rather than treating the absence as evidence that GOS is disabled.
Alternate game performance management on supported S23 software
Samsung’s Galaxy S23 guidance documents an “Alternate game performance management” option in Game Booster Labs. The documented route is Game Launcher > More options > Game Booster > Labs > Alternate game performance management. Samsung also shows an in-game route through the Game Booster panel. The exact route can differ after software updates or on another model.
Samsung warns that activating game performance management may increase heat or battery consumption while the game is in progress. Change this option only for a controlled comparison, and stop if the phone becomes uncomfortably hot or shows a temperature warning.

Opening the in-game panel
Start the game through Game Launcher when that is how your model exposes Game Booster. During play, open the Game Booster panel using the gesture or on-screen control shown on your phone. Look for performance mode, FPS, resolution, frame booster, Labs or monitoring entries. Menu names are not universal, so record the wording and software version with your results.

How software and model differences affect the result
Do not transfer an S22 result directly to an S23, a newer Galaxy or a different regional firmware. Samsung’s 2022 S22 explanation discusses software changes that adjusted early-game clock limits and added Game Performance Management, while the alternate-management path is documented specifically for S23 software. Samsung’s One UI 7 controls are newer still. These examples show why the exact model and software build belong in every report.
A missing menu can mean that the feature is unsupported, renamed, moved or controlled by a different Game Booster version. It does not establish that GOS is inactive. Conversely, seeing a performance option does not prove that every frame-rate change comes from that option.
How to read common outcomes
FPS falls gradually as the phone heats
This is the pattern most consistent with thermal management: the initial run is faster, the device becomes hotter, and sustained performance declines. Samsung’s S22 explanation explicitly says temperature control prevents the phone from continuing to heat above a threshold. That finding identifies a thermal relationship, not a unique GOS signature. The game’s own workload, ambient conditions and other system controls remain possible contributors.

FPS is low from the first minute
Check the selected Game Booster mode, per-game FPS cap, resolution, frame booster setting and the game’s own graphics preset. Also check whether Battery saver or another system power mode is active. An immediate cap is less suggestive of heat accumulated during the run, although a setting or firmware policy could still be intentional performance management.
The issue appears only in one game
Repeat the procedure in another demanding game using settings appropriate to that title. A game-specific result points you toward its renderer, scene complexity, update or configuration as well as GOS. Do not compare raw FPS values across different games; compare each game with itself under matched settings.
Changing Alternate game performance management helps, but heat rises
Record both the frame result and the new temperature or battery behavior. Samsung’s warning means a higher frame rate can come with greater heat or consumption. A setting that improves one short run may reduce sustained performance later if the additional heat triggers thermal control.

Perf Z or GPUWatch is unavailable
Availability depends on model, software and the installed Samsung gaming components. Continue with a fixed scene, elapsed time and visual frame behavior, and record the absence of an overlay as a limitation. Do not substitute a synthetic benchmark for a game-specific observation and call the result definitive.
The slowdown disappears after the phone rests
Cooling and recovery strengthen the case for a temperature-related pattern, but they still do not identify which Samsung service or hardware policy made the adjustment. Note how long recovery takes and whether the same sequence happens on every repeat.
Samsung figures that need careful qualification
Samsung Electronics Service reported an average improvement of “about 10 Frame” for an S22 software-update and Game Performance Management context using Genshin Impact. That is a reported result for that update, setting and example game—not a universal expected gain, and not a diagnostic threshold for deciding that GOS is throttling another phone.
In a Samsung Developer discussion of Adaptive Performance with Call of Duty Mobile, Samsung wrote: “With Adaptive Performance, the temperature is on average 2, and a maximum OF 3 degree celcius lower.” The wording refers to the described example. It should not be generalized into a guaranteed temperature reduction for every Galaxy model, game or environment.

- Game version, map or scene, graphics preset, resolution and FPS cap.
- Game Booster mode and any Labs or per-game setting.
- Starting and ending battery state, charging status and whether the case was installed.
- Approximate run duration and when a slowdown began.
- Overlay readings or screen recording, if available.
- Whether the phone was visibly or noticeably warmer and whether performance recovered after cooling.
Report the conclusion in terms of observations: for example, “FPS declined after sustained heat in both settings, with a larger decline in Standard mode.” Avoid writing “GOS throttled the phone” unless Samsung or another controlled diagnostic has directly established that attribution; the documented Samsung tools do not do so.

Safety and recovery when testing
- Stop a run if the phone displays a temperature warning, becomes too hot to handle comfortably or behaves abnormally.
- Restore the original Game Booster and per-game values after the comparison if you do not want the higher-heat or higher-consumption behavior.
- Allow the device to cool before starting another condition; otherwise, the next run measures leftover heat rather than the setting you intended to test.
- Do not treat a cooling accessory, external thermometer or benchmark result as proof of GOS causation. Those may alter conditions, but the documented Samsung material does not make them attribution tools.
The practical conclusion
You can check for a repeatable relationship between Game Booster settings, frame behavior and rising temperature, but Samsung does not publish a universal GOS-specific throttle indicator. The strongest home diagnosis is a controlled set of repeated game runs with matching settings, an available CPU/GPU or frame overlay, and a clear record of what changes when the phone becomes hot. Use the result to distinguish an immediate configuration cap from sustained thermal decline, while keeping GOS, the game and device-level thermal management as separate possible causes.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I prove that GOS caused a specific FPS drop?
Not with Samsung’s documented consumer tools. Repeated tests can show that a Game Booster setting, heat or sustained play correlates with the drop, but Samsung does not provide a universal GOS event log, threshold or pass/fail test that proves attribution.
Should I use a benchmark to test GOS?
Use the actual game first. Samsung’s S22 guidance distinguishes benchmark tools from games, so benchmark behavior may not represent how GOS handles a game workload.

Repeat the same game scene under matched conditions, compare Game Booster settings one at a time, and watch how FPS changes as the phone heats. That can reveal a repeatable performance pattern, but Samsung provides no universal indicator that proves GOS caused it.
