Enter your exact property address in an official broadband availability checker, then verify the result with the provider before ordering. In the United States, the FCC National Broadband Map shows providers, access technology and maximum advertised speeds for an individual location. In the United Kingdom, an Openreach fibre checker reports the broadband option currently recorded for an address in its network. A map result is a screening result—not proof that a particular retail plan can be ordered, what it will cost, or how fast it will perform in practice.
What you need to check
Have the complete address ready, including the building or unit number, street, town or city, postal or ZIP code and country. Address-level tools identify a specific location point; a nearby house, a neighborhood coverage color or a provider’s general service area does not establish that your premises can be connected.
- Use the address where the service would actually be installed.
- If you live in an apartment, try the unit or flat number as well as the building address if the checker presents both options.
- Keep the provider’s contact details available so you can confirm orderability after the map search.
- If several people share the property, decide whether you need service for one dwelling or for a separately addressed unit.
How to check a US address with the FCC National Broadband Map
The FCC map’s fixed-broadband view covers fibre, cable, DSL, satellite and fixed wireless. It uses information submitted by fixed-location internet providers through the FCC Broadband Data Collection. Follow this sequence to avoid treating a broad coverage result as a fibre confirmation.
1. Search the precise property
- Open the FCC National Broadband Map and choose the address-search function.
- Enter the complete street address.
- When the map offers one or more location points, select the point that represents your premises. Do not choose a nearby point merely because it is on the same street.
The map displays availability for the selected location, so selecting the wrong point can produce a misleading provider list.

2. Read the technology field
Inspect each provider entry and find the access-technology label. Select an entry identified as fibre. The presence of a broadband provider in the results is not enough: the same address may also show cable, DSL, satellite or fixed wireless.
Keep the technology distinction separate from the provider name. A provider can offer different technologies in different locations, and a result for the address does not mean every plan sold by that provider uses fibre.
3. Record the advertised speeds
For each fibre listing, note the maximum advertised download and upload speeds shown by the map. Record the provider name, technology and both speed figures before contacting the provider. Those figures are useful for comparing listings, but they are not a measurement of the speed you will experience.

4. Confirm the result with the provider
Use the provider’s own address checker or contact its sales or installation team. Ask whether the exact property can accept an order now, which fibre plans are available, whether an installation appointment is required and what download and upload rates the selected plan advertises. A provider must confirm the retail plan, price, contract terms, installation conditions and any property-specific limitation.
What “available” means on the FCC map
The FCC’s availability definition is broader than “a live fibre connection is already installed.” Service is considered available when a provider has, or previously had, a connection in service at the location, or when it could initiate service through a routine installation within 10 business days of a request.

That 10-business-day condition is an availability rule used for reporting. It does not promise that your appointment will occur within that period, that construction will never be required, or that the plan you want is currently orderable. Treat the result as a reason to ask the provider for a property-specific order decision.
How current the FCC information is
Fixed-location providers file location-level availability information twice a year. The FCC also says the map is updated continuously through verification work, new provider data, location updates and public information. Consequently, a listing can change after a provider’s latest filing or after a location record is corrected.
What the map does not establish
- Actual performance: Maximum advertised speeds are not a test of throughput, latency, congestion or reliability at your home.
- Affordability: The map does not establish the monthly price, equipment charges, installation fees, taxes or contract conditions.
- Adoption: A location marked available does not show that residents have subscribed.
- Immediate orderability: A provider may need to verify the address, check capacity or explain a property-specific constraint before accepting an order.
How to check a UK address on the Openreach network
For an address within the Openreach network footprint, use the Openreach fibre checker and enter the exact property address. The checker reports the broadband option it currently records for that address.
Run the address search
- Open the Openreach fibre checker.
- Enter the full address and select the matching property from the results.
- Read the fibre or broadband option shown for that exact address, including any qualification or ordering message.
Openreach’s result describes the network information it holds; retail service is ordered through a broadband provider. Contact the provider you intend to use and ask it to confirm that it can place an order against the same address.
If an order could not be placed
Openreach advises people who could not place an order with a broadband provider to run the fibre check before raising an issue. Save the checker result and the provider’s explanation. If the checker shows an option but the provider still cannot accept the order, ask the provider whether the problem is an address-record mismatch, a missing unit, a temporary ordering restriction or another property-specific condition.

How to compare multiple fibre results
When an address checker returns more than one provider or fibre entry, compare the items that affect whether you can actually buy and use the service.

Why a fibre result may not lead to an order
The map point is wrong
Address databases can contain a misplaced or missing location point. Recheck the selected point against the building, not just the street label. For multi-unit buildings, verify the unit information with the provider.
The technology is not actually fibre
Some tools display all fixed broadband technologies together. Read the technology field rather than inferring fibre from a high speed or from the provider’s name.
The provider’s records differ from the map
Map data are provider-submitted and can be updated at different times from a provider’s ordering system. Give the provider the exact address and ask it to reconcile the discrepancy.
Capacity or construction must be checked
An availability result can include a routine installation after a request. The provider may still need to verify network capacity, building access, a serviceable unit record or an installation route before accepting an order.

The requested plan is not offered
A location can support fibre while a particular speed tier, contract or promotional plan is unavailable. Ask which fibre plans are orderable at that property rather than assuming that every plan shown elsewhere is offered there.

The FCC map provides two different challenge paths. Choose the one that matches the problem.
Availability Challenge
Use an Availability Challenge when the provider or technology shown for the location is wrong—for example, when a listing says fibre is available but the provider cannot serve the property, or when the reported technology does not match what the provider offers. Keep evidence such as the provider’s written response or an order-screen message if available.
Location Challenge
Use a Location Challenge when the address point is missing, misplaced or otherwise incorrect. A location-record problem can prevent the map from showing the right providers even when the network reaches the building.

Checking addresses outside the US and UK
The FCC map is a US resource, and the Openreach checker applies to addresses within Openreach’s UK network footprint. Other countries may provide a national regulator’s broadband map, a network operator checker or an internet provider’s address tool.
Use the same method wherever you live:
- Find the official address-level checker for your country, regulator or network operator.
- Search the exact property and select the correct location or unit.
- Identify the access technology explicitly as fibre.
- Record the advertised download and upload speeds and any qualification message.
- Confirm orderability, price, installation and plan terms directly with the provider.
If no national map exists, use the local network operator and provider checkers together. A provider’s own address result is usually the final step before an order, but it still does not replace checking the exact unit and understanding the installation conditions.
A practical fibre-availability checklist
- Exact street address, building number and unit entered.
- Correct location point selected on the map.
- Technology label explicitly says fibre.
- Provider name recorded.
- Maximum advertised download and upload speeds recorded.
- Provider confirms the exact property is orderable.
- Plan price, contract, equipment, installation and taxes confirmed.
- Any required appointment, permission or construction explained.
- Map discrepancy documented if the provider’s answer differs.
- Availability or location challenge submitted when US map data are demonstrably wrong.
Questions to ask the provider before ordering
- Can you accept an order for this exact address and unit today?
- Is the connection fibre, and what network type reaches the premises?
- What download and upload speeds does the available plan advertise?
- Is the quoted price recurring, promotional or conditional on a contract?
- Are installation, equipment, taxes or activation charged separately?
- Will an engineer need access to the property or shared building?
- Does the address require construction, permission or a non-routine installation?
- What happens if the installation survey finds that the property cannot be connected as quoted?
The key distinction: coverage, orderability and performance
These three questions should not be treated as interchangeable:
- Coverage: An official map or network checker reports that a provider’s network is recorded as serving, or potentially serving, the location.
- Orderability: The retail provider confirms that it can submit an order for your exact property and selected plan.
- Performance: The installed connection delivers the speed, latency and reliability you experience in use.
Address checkers are strongest for the first question. The provider must answer the second, and only the installed service under real usage can answer the third. Checking all three prevents a fibre label or advertised speed from being mistaken for a guaranteed outcome.
