Open Control Panel > System and Security > Power Options > Choose what the power buttons do. Under Shutdown settings, check Turn on fast startup (recommended): a checked box means Fast Startup is enabled; an empty box means it is disabled. If the controls are dimmed, choose Change settings that are currently unavailable first.
Check the Fast Startup setting
The checkbox in Control Panel is the most direct way to determine Fast Startup’s state. It shows the setting Windows will use for the shutdown-to-startup path, rather than asking you to infer the answer from boot behavior or from another power option.
- Open Control Panel. The simplest method is to search for Control Panel from the Start menu.
- Select System and Security.
- Select Power Options.
- In the left side of the Power Options window, select Choose what the power buttons do. This opens the Power Options system-settings page.
- Scroll to the Shutdown settings section and locate Turn on fast startup (recommended).
- Read the checkbox itself. A tick or check mark means Fast Startup is enabled. An empty box means it is disabled.
Do not substitute another setting for this inspection. The presence of a hibernation option, the result of a normal shutdown, or the time a particular boot takes does not directly tell you whether the Fast Startup box is selected. The decisive evidence is the checkbox beside Turn on fast startup (recommended).

Windows may display the shutdown controls but make them unavailable for editing. Select Change settings that are currently unavailable near the top of the page. Windows may request administrator approval before unlocking the controls. Once the page refreshes, return to Shutdown settings and inspect the Fast Startup checkbox again.

Unlocking the controls does not automatically turn Fast Startup on or off. It only makes the settings available for inspection or change. Read the box after the controls are revealed: checked still means enabled, and clear still means disabled.
What to record
If you are documenting a support issue, record the exact label and state you see:
- Turn on fast startup (recommended) checked: Fast Startup is enabled.
- Turn on fast startup (recommended) clear: Fast Startup is disabled.
- Label absent or control unavailable after unlocking: the state is not established from this page.
The wording and the controls can vary between Windows versions, devices, and managed computers. A Windows 10 or Windows 11 computer can therefore present a slightly different page from another computer while still using the same Power Options route.
What Fast Startup means
Fast Startup is a special kind of shutdown. Microsoft describes it as “a type of shutdown that uses a hibernation file to speed up the subsequent boot.” Instead of discarding every part of the operating-system state during shutdown, Windows logs off user sessions and writes the kernel state and loaded-driver state to the hibernation file. At the next startup, that saved system state can be restored rather than initialized from nothing.
Microsoft also summarizes the distinction this way: “Fast startup logs off user sessions, but the contents of kernel (session 0) are written to hard disk.” The saved information is therefore operating-system state, not a copy of your ordinary interactive desktop session.
Fast Startup versus ordinary hibernation
Both features use hibernation technology, which is why they are often confused. Ordinary hibernation preserves a user’s working session so that open programs and the desktop can be resumed. Fast Startup is used after a shutdown: Windows logs off users, saves the kernel and loaded drivers, and uses that reduced hibernation state to prepare the next boot. It is not the same as saving your open desktop session in ordinary hibernation.

This distinction explains why hibernation availability is relevant but not decisive when you check the setting. A computer can expose hibernation-related controls while the Fast Startup checkbox is clear. Conversely, if hibernation is unavailable or hidden, Windows may not offer the Fast Startup control in the expected form. Always inspect the checkbox rather than assuming that one feature’s availability proves the other feature’s state.

Fast Startup applies to the transition from Shut down to the next power-on. It does not apply to Restart. Microsoft explains that Restart performs a full boot cycle without Fast Startup’s hibernation-based performance improvement.
That means a restart is not a valid test for the checkbox. A computer may restart normally whether Fast Startup is checked or clear. If you need to answer “Is Fast Startup enabled?”, return to Control Panel > System and Security > Power Options > Choose what the power buttons do and read the setting.
If the checkbox is missing or unavailable
A missing or inaccessible control needs careful interpretation. It does not automatically mean that Fast Startup is disabled. Several conditions can affect what Windows displays:
- Hibernation capability: Fast Startup relies on hibernation technology, and hibernation is not available on every PC.
- Device design: Microsoft notes that devices with InstantGo may not have a hibernate option. Device capabilities can therefore change which shutdown controls appear.
- Administrative policy: A work or school administrator can restrict access to power settings or prevent changes, leaving controls greyed out or otherwise limited.
- Windows-version differences: Labels and the exact arrangement of the Power Options page can vary between Windows releases.
What to try, in order
- Open the Power Options system-settings page again and confirm that you followed the full path through Choose what the power buttons do.
- Select Change settings that are currently unavailable. If an administrator prompt appears, use an account authorized to approve the change or ask the device administrator to inspect it.
- Look for hibernation-related controls. Their presence can help explain what the device supports, but it does not establish whether Fast Startup itself is selected.
- If the Fast Startup label still does not appear, check whether the computer’s design or management policy limits hibernation and shutdown choices.
- Until the checkbox can actually be inspected, describe the status as not established, not as definitely on or off.
This conservative conclusion matters in troubleshooting. The available Microsoft documentation does not define one universal replacement status check for every computer on which the checkbox is missing. A command that changes hibernation configuration is not automatically a command that reports the Fast Startup checkbox.
About powercfg commands
Microsoft documents powercfg /hibernate on and powercfg /hibernate off as commands that enable or disable hibernation. They change hibernation configuration; they are not a direct readout of whether Turn on fast startup (recommended) is checked.

For that reason, do not run one of those commands merely to answer the status question, and do not infer the checkbox state from the command’s result. Turning hibernation on or off can change which controls Windows offers, but the command itself does not tell you the prior or current selection of Fast Startup. If you use a command while diagnosing a device, return to Control Panel and inspect the checkbox after the configuration change.
Understanding the two direct states

Keeping these cases separate prevents common support mistakes. “Enabled,” “disabled,” and “not established” are three different conclusions. Only the first two can be assigned by reading the checkbox state; the third is the correct description when the control cannot be found or inspected.
A practical inspection checklist
Use this checklist when checking your own PC or guiding another person over the phone:

- Confirm that the person is in Control Panel, not a different modern Settings page.
- Follow System and Security to Power Options.
- Open Choose what the power buttons do, because the Fast Startup control is on that system-settings page.
- If the page presents grey controls, choose Change settings that are currently unavailable.
- Read the complete label, Turn on fast startup (recommended), and note whether its box contains a check mark.
- Do not use Restart as a test, and do not treat hibernation availability or a
powercfgcommand as a substitute for reading the box. - If the label remains unavailable, report that the status is not established and investigate device capability or administrative restrictions instead of guessing.
Common interpretation mistakes
“Hibernation is listed, so Fast Startup must be on.”
Hibernation and Fast Startup are related because Fast Startup uses a hibernation file, but they are separate settings. Hibernation can be available while Fast Startup is disabled. The checkbox, not the mere existence of a hibernate option, answers the question.
“I restarted and the PC booted quickly, so Fast Startup is enabled.”
Restart does not use Fast Startup’s hibernation-based improvement. Restart performs a full boot cycle, so its timing cannot establish the checkbox state.
“The option is hidden, so it is definitely off.”
A hidden or missing option can reflect device capability, an InstantGo design, Windows-version differences, or administrator restrictions. Without seeing the checkbox, the correct conclusion is that the state has not been established.

“I can use powercfg /hibernate on as a status query.”
Microsoft documents that command as a way to change hibernation configuration. It is not documented as a direct report of the Fast Startup checkbox. Inspect the Power Options page instead.

Fast Startup logs off user sessions and saves kernel and loaded-driver state. It is not ordinary hibernation’s saved interactive desktop session. Knowing this distinction helps explain why the feature belongs under shutdown settings.

Does restarting test Fast Startup?
No. Fast Startup applies to shutdown followed by startup. Restart performs a full boot cycle without Fast Startup’s hibernation-based improvement.
What does Fast Startup save?

No. The setting is exposed through Windows Control Panel’s Power Options page. A utility, accessory, or replacement part is not needed to read the checkbox.
The Bottom Line
To check Fast Startup, open Control Panel > System and Security > Power Options > Choose what the power buttons do, unlock the page if necessary, and read Turn on fast startup (recommended). Checked means enabled; clear means disabled. Hibernation availability and powercfg commands do not directly answer the question, and Restart is not a valid test.
