Run docker info (or sudo docker info) first. A response containing server information proves that the Docker CLI can reach a running Engine. Then run docker version to identify the client, check sudo systemctl is-active docker for the Linux service state, and finish with sudo docker run hello-world for an end-to-end test. These checks distinguish an absent CLI, a stopped daemon, a wrong endpoint, a permissions problem, and a fully working installation.
The four checks that answer the question
Docker has separate components, so “installed” can mean different things. The command-line client may be present while the Docker daemon is stopped; the daemon may be running while your user lacks permission to use its Unix socket; or the client may be configured to contact a remote Engine instead of the local VPS. Check these layers in order:

- CLI presence: can the shell find the
dockerexecutable? - Daemon reachability: can the client obtain server information?
- Linux service state: is the local
dockerservice active? - Container execution: can the Engine pull an image and start a container?
The shortest reliable sequence is:
docker info
docker version
sudo systemctl is-active docker
sudo docker run hello-world
Add sudo to the first two commands if your normal account is not allowed to access Docker’s socket. The command that fails, and the exact error, identifies the next troubleshooting branch.
1. Ask Docker whether the Engine is reachable
Run docker info
docker info
Docker describes docker info as the operating-system-independent way to check whether Docker is running. A successful result includes a Server section with Engine details such as the storage driver, number of containers and images, operating-system information, and resource settings. Seeing server data means the CLI is installed and a daemon answered at the endpoint selected by the client.
#1 Best Overall
If the account cannot read the Docker socket, try:
sudo docker info
A successful result with sudo but not without it is normally a user-permission issue, not evidence that Docker is missing.
Recognize a daemon connection failure
An error such as Cannot connect to the Docker daemon means the client exists but cannot reach an Engine. Possible causes include a stopped service, an incorrect DOCKER_HOST setting, a remote Engine that is offline, or a socket-permission problem. Do not reinstall Docker solely because this message appears; inspect the service and endpoint first.
2. Confirm that the Docker CLI is installed
Use docker version
docker version
This command reports the Client section immediately. When an Engine is reachable, it also reports Server and Engine version details. It is useful for recording the installed client version and for separating a client-side problem from a daemon-side problem.
If the shell returns docker: command not found (or an equivalent “command not found” message), the CLI is either not installed or its directory is not in PATH. Check the shell’s command lookup before installing:
command -v docker
which docker
If both commands return nothing, follow the installation procedure for the VPS distribution and CPU architecture. Docker publishes separate procedures for Ubuntu, Debian, Fedora, RHEL, CentOS, Raspberry Pi OS, and multiple architectures; package names, repositories, and startup behavior are not universal.
Interpret client-only output
If docker version prints client information followed by a server-connection error, the executable is installed. The missing piece is Engine reachability, not the CLI package. Continue with the service and endpoint checks below.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3. Check the Linux service with systemd
Get a one-word state
sudo systemctl is-active docker
On a systemd-based VPS, the expected output for a running local daemon is active. Other results have distinct meanings:
inactivemeans the service is installed but not currently running.failedmeans systemd attempted to start it and recorded a failure.unknownor a “unit not found” message means this system does not have a service unit nameddocker; Docker may be installed differently, or the package may be absent.
Read detailed status
sudo systemctl status docker
The detailed view shows whether the unit is loaded, its active state, the main process ID, recent log lines, and the last exit status. Capture this output when diagnosing a failed start. It often identifies configuration errors, storage problems, or permission issues that a one-word check cannot show.
Systems without systemd
Some VPS images use traditional service utilities. Docker documentation also lists:
sudo status docker
sudo service docker status
Use the command supported by the distribution. A failed systemctl command on a non-systemd image does not by itself prove that Docker is absent.
4. Start a stopped Docker daemon
Start it manually with systemd
sudo systemctl start docker
Check the result immediately:
sudo systemctl is-active docker
docker info
On a typical installation, a system utility starts the daemon rather than a user launching the daemon process manually. Starting the service is appropriate when the unit exists but is stopped.
If startup fails
Run the detailed status command again:
sudo systemctl status docker
For additional service logs on a systemd host, inspect the unit journal:
sudo journalctl -u docker --no-pager
Look for the first configuration, filesystem, or dependency error rather than focusing only on the final “failed” line. Correct the reported issue, start the service again, and then repeat docker info. A daemon that cannot start is an operational problem even though Docker packages may be installed correctly.
5. Check whether the client is using the intended endpoint
Inspect DOCKER_HOST
env | grep DOCKER_HOST
DOCKER_HOST can direct the CLI to a different socket or a remote host. A local daemon may be active while the client is trying to contact an unreachable endpoint. This explains cases where sudo systemctl is-active docker returns active but docker info still reports that it cannot connect.
Recommended Free Tools
Return to the local default
If you intend to use the VPS’s local Engine, remove the variable from the current shell:
unset DOCKER_HOST
docker info
If the problem returns in a new session, search shell startup files and service-specific environment configuration for an export of DOCKER_HOST. Remove or correct that setting only after confirming that no required remote-Engine workflow depends on it.
Distinguish endpoint and service failures
An active local service proves only that a daemon process is running on the VPS. It does not prove that the current CLI is addressing that daemon. Always consider the selected endpoint when service status and client behavior disagree.
6. Run a complete container test
Execute hello-world
sudo docker run hello-world
On a usable installation, Docker downloads the hello-world image if it is not already local, creates a container, runs it, prints a confirmation message, and exits. This single test exercises more than a version query: the CLI must reach the daemon, the daemon must access its image store, the host must be able to pull the image, and the Engine must create and start a container.
What success looks like
The output contains a welcome or confirmation message from the image and explains that the installation appears to be working. The container exits normally after printing the message; it is not intended to remain as a background service.
What a failure means
A failed hello-world test does not automatically mean that Docker is uninstalled. If docker info worked, the CLI and daemon communicated; the remaining failure may involve image access, storage, networking, container creation, or permissions. Recheck service status, the endpoint variable, daemon logs, and the identity used to run the command.
How to classify the result
| Observation | What it establishes | Next action |
|---|---|---|
docker: command not found |
The CLI is absent or not on PATH. |
Verify with command -v docker, then use the distribution-specific installation procedure. |
docker version shows Client, but no Server |
The CLI is installed; the Engine is unreachable. | Check DOCKER_HOST, service status, and socket permissions. |
docker info returns server details |
The client reached a running Engine at its selected endpoint. | Run the end-to-end test to verify image pull and container startup. |
systemctl is-active docker returns inactive |
The local service unit exists but is stopped. | Run sudo systemctl start docker, then check logs if it fails. |
Service is active, but docker info cannot connect |
A running local service is not being reached by the current client. | Inspect and, if appropriate, unset DOCKER_HOST; then review logs and permissions. |
Works with sudo, fails without it |
The daemon is reachable, but the normal account lacks socket access. | Use the permission procedure below, understanding its security consequence. |
hello-world succeeds |
CLI, daemon, image pull, storage, networking, and container start all worked for that run. | Docker is operational for the account and endpoint used. |
Why Docker works with sudo but not as your user
The Unix-socket permission model
The Docker daemon binds to a Unix socket, not a TCP port. On a typical Linux installation, the socket is owned by root, so an ordinary account cannot access it unless its group permissions allow that access. This is why the same command can fail as a normal user and succeed with sudo.
Rank #4
Add the account to the docker group
sudo usermod -aG docker $USER
Start a new login session so the group membership is loaded. For a quick test in the current terminal, run:
newgrp docker
docker info
After the membership change, retry the non-privileged commands and the test container:
docker info
docker run hello-world
Understand the security trade-off
Docker documents that membership in the docker group grants root-level privileges. Anyone who can use the Docker socket can generally start containers with host filesystem access or otherwise control the host through the daemon. Add only trusted users, and retain sudo-based access when group membership would violate your VPS’s security policy.
When group membership appears ineffective
- Open a fresh SSH login after running
usermod; existing sessions usually retain their old group list. - Confirm the account is in the group with
idorgroups. - Check that the command is using the expected local socket and that
DOCKER_HOSTis not redirecting it elsewhere.
Distribution, architecture, and installation scope
There is no single Docker package version or installation command that applies to every Linux VPS. Repository choice, CPU architecture, distribution release, and installation date affect the package and service behavior. Docker maintains separate procedures for Ubuntu, Debian, Fedora, RHEL, CentOS, Raspberry Pi OS, and other supported platforms.

cat /etc/os-release
uname -m
/etc/os-release identifies the distribution and release; uname -m reports the machine architecture. Use both values when selecting Docker’s official distribution procedure. An installation guide for one distribution may use a different repository, package name, or startup command on another.
If Docker is absent, install the Engine and CLI using the procedure for that exact distribution and architecture, then return to this article’s verification sequence. Do not infer that a package is unavailable merely because a command shown for another distribution fails.
Best Value
A repeatable diagnostic workflow
Use this order when you are unsure what is wrong:
- Run
command -v docker. If it returns nothing, resolve the CLI installation orPATH. - Run
docker version. Record whether Client and Server sections appear. - Run
env | grep DOCKER_HOST. If a remote endpoint is not intentional, rununset DOCKER_HOST. - Run
sudo systemctl is-active dockerand, when necessary, sudo systemctl status docker. - If the service is stopped, run
sudo systemctl start docker; inspectsudo journalctl -u docker --no-pagerif startup fails. - Run
sudo docker infoto separate daemon reachability from normal-user permissions. - Run
sudo docker run hello-worldto test image retrieval and container startup. - If the
sudotest succeeds but the unprivileged test fails, decide whether to add the user to thedockergroup, accepting its root-level security implications.
This sequence prevents a common mistake: treating one successful layer as proof that every layer works. A version string proves only that a client executable ran; an active service proves only that a local unit is running; the complete test requires all components to cooperate.

Checking only the version
docker --version or client-only output confirms an executable, not a running daemon. Follow it with docker info and the test container.
Starting the daemon but ignoring the endpoint
If the service is active and the client still cannot connect, inspect DOCKER_HOST. Starting a second service will not help if the CLI is deliberately pointed at another host.
Assuming a permission error means a missing installation
A command that succeeds with sudo has already demonstrated that the CLI can reach the daemon. Correct socket permissions or group membership instead of reinstalling.
Using a systemd command on a non-systemd VPS
Use the service utility supplied by the operating system when systemctl is unavailable. The management command varies by distribution and init system.

Treating a failed image pull as proof the daemon is absent
If docker info returns server data, the daemon is present and reachable. Investigate network access, registry communication, storage, and logs for the specific hello-world failure.
What “installed and working” should mean
For a Linux VPS, the strongest practical conclusion is reached when all of these are true:
- The shell locates the Docker CLI.
docker inforeturns server information from the intended Engine.- The Docker service is active, or the host uses its equivalent service manager.
- The account can run the required commands under the chosen permission model.
docker run hello-worldpulls, starts, prints its confirmation, and exits successfully.
If one item fails, report that specific layer—CLI, daemon, endpoint, permissions, or container execution—rather than simply saying “Docker is not installed.” That distinction points to the correct fix and avoids unnecessary package changes.
