The clearest sign is an explicit Sponsored label on a separate ad unit, usually displayed below the ChatGPT response. A shopping product result is a different feature: OpenAI says those results are selected independently, are not ads, and are not influenced by OpenAI partnerships. A product named in ordinary answer text may be impossible to classify from the interface alone, so treat an unlabeled mention as unverified rather than assuming it is paid—or assuming it is completely free of commercial influence.
Use this three-way distinction first
ChatGPT can show a paid advertisement, a shopping result, or a product mention generated in the conversation. Their appearance can overlap, but their stated status is different.

These categories describe presentation and policy, not product quality. A non-sponsored shopping result can still be unsuitable for your needs, and a clearly labeled ad can still describe a legitimate product.
Step-by-step: check a product you see in ChatGPT

Inspect the placement around the response
Look at the product card or block itself, not only the answer text. Find the exact word Sponsored. OpenAI describes ads as clearly labeled and visually separated from the response, commonly below it. A separate block with an advertiser name, favicon, title, copy, landing page, and image is consistent with the ad format OpenAI describes.

Decide whether it is a shopping result
If the interface identifies the item as a shopping result, carousel, or product card generated by ChatGPT’s shopping feature, do not treat that label as an advertising disclosure. OpenAI says shopping results are independently selected and are not ads. The result may still link to a retailer or manufacturer, but that commercial destination does not change the stated selection method.

Open ad information when it is offered
On an eligible ad, select About this ad or the equivalent information control. OpenAI says this can explain why the ad was shown. Depending on your account and location, ad controls may also allow you to manage personalization, hide or report the ad, or clear advertising data.

Separate the answer from the ad
Read the response and the ad as two interface elements. A product discussed in the answer is not automatically the product being advertised below it. OpenAI states that ads run on systems separate from the chat model and cannot shape, rank, or alter responses. That is OpenAI’s published policy description; it is not an independent audit of every recommendation.

Record what is and is not disclosed
For a purchase decision, note the label, the placement, whether it is identified as a shopping result, and whether an explanatory control is present. If none of those cues resolves the status, describe the mention as unverified. Do not make a definitive sponsorship claim from proximity, ranking, or the mere presence of a product link.
How to recognize a ChatGPT ad
A “Sponsored” label is the strongest visible cue
OpenAI’s consumer guidance says ads may appear below a response, are clearly labeled “Sponsored,” and are visually separated from the conversational answer. The label should be attached to the ad unit itself. A product name appearing in a paragraph, without that separate treatment, is not enough to establish that it is an ad.
An ad is paid placement, not an endorsement
OpenAI describes ads as paid placements and explicitly says that seeing one does not mean OpenAI endorses or recommends the advertiser, product, or service. Treat the ad as paid visibility, not as a quality signal or a recommendation from OpenAI.
Ad controls may reveal additional context
Where available, About this ad can provide the reason for delivery. Controls differ by plan, region, and eligibility, so the absence of that control does not prove that a placement is not an ad. A missing control may simply reflect the account or rollout available to you.
How shopping results differ from ads
ChatGPT’s shopping experience can present products with images, prices, merchants, or links. Those visual elements can make a result look promotional, but OpenAI says shopping product results are selected independently based on relevance to the user’s intent. OpenAI also says they are not ads and are not influenced by OpenAI partnerships.
That statement answers the narrow sponsorship question: a shopping result is not automatically a paid placement. It does not guarantee that the price is current, that the merchant is the best choice, or that the product is appropriate. Verify the final price, availability, shipping, return terms, and seller on the linked merchant’s site before buying.
Do not infer advertising status from position in a carousel, the number of times a product appears, an attractive image, or the presence of a purchase link. Those are shopping-interface features, not disclosure language.

What an ordinary product recommendation in the answer means
ChatGPT may name a product while answering a question without rendering a separate card or ad. The documented OpenAI descriptions distinguish ads and shopping results, but they do not publish a universal user-facing procedure that proves whether every product mention in ordinary prose has a commercial relationship behind it.

If the interface shows no “Sponsored” label and does not identify the item as a shopping result, you can report what is visible—“the answer mentions this product without a sponsorship label”—but you should not state as fact that the recommendation is sponsored or unsponsored. An unlabeled mention can be a normal model-generated answer, yet the absence of a label is not proof that no relationship exists anywhere in the chain.
Who may see ads, and why your screen may differ
OpenAI says its advertising test began in the United States on February 9, 2026. The rollout is limited and evolving: eligible users on Free and Go plans in selected regions may see ads as the test expands. OpenAI says Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, and Edu accounts will not have ads, and accounts identified as belonging to users under 18 will not see them.
These conditions are time-sensitive. A friend’s screenshot cannot establish what your account should display, and the absence of an ad today does not establish that your plan or region will never receive one. Check the current OpenAI Help Center information for the latest eligibility and rollout details before relying on an older screenshot or article.
How to use “About this ad” and other controls
Open the explanation before drawing conclusions
When an ad offers About this ad, open it from the ad’s own menu or information control. The panel is intended to explain why the ad was shown. Keep a record of the explanation if you are comparing sessions or reporting a problem, because ad availability and personalization settings can change.

Understand what controls can and cannot tell you
- Personalization controls: Eligible users may be able to manage how ads are personalized. This concerns delivery, not whether a product recommendation in the answer was paid.
- Hide or report: These options let you reduce or flag an ad. They do not convert the ad into a product review or prove that the underlying product claim is accurate.
- Clear ads data: Where offered, clearing advertising data affects ad-related information. It does not erase the text of a prior chat or establish the commercial status of a product mention.
If no control appears, record that fact as a limitation of your current interface. Availability depends on plan, region, and eligibility.
What OpenAI says about influence on answers
OpenAI states: “Ads do not influence ChatGPT’s answers.” It says advertisers cannot shape, rank, or alter responses and that ads operate on systems separate from the chat model. Under that policy, an ad appearing beneath an answer does not mean the advertiser paid for, selected, or edited the answer above it.

This is a policy statement from OpenAI, not a finding from an independent investigation. When you explain what happened to another reader, distinguish between the visible fact—an ad appeared—and the policy claim—that the ad did not influence the answer. That distinction avoids presenting a vendor’s description of its system as external verification.
FTC disclosure guidance: useful context, not a ChatGPT-specific ruling
In the United States, the Federal Trade Commission says a material connection between an endorser and an advertiser should be disclosed clearly and conspicuously when the connection could affect how consumers evaluate the endorsement and is not already clear from context. Examples include payment, a business relationship, or receiving a free product.
The FTC’s affiliate-marketing guidance says the disclosure should explain the relationship in understandable terms and appear close to the recommendation or link. Its example wording is: “I get commissions for purchases made through links in this post.” The placement requirement matters: a disclosure buried far from the recommendation may not adequately connect the relationship to the claim.
The FTC’s Endorsement Guides apply across media, including online media, and require endorsements to be truthful and not misleading. This is general U.S. guidance. It does not determine whether a particular ChatGPT sentence is sponsored, resolve the laws of another country, or replace advice from a qualified lawyer about a specific arrangement.
Compare placements using four questions
When two items look similar, apply the same four tests rather than judging by design or prominence:
- Is “Sponsored” present? If yes, you have the clearest visible indication of a paid ad.
- Is it a separate ad unit or a shopping result? A unit below the response points to the ad format OpenAI describes; a carousel or product-result presentation belongs to the shopping distinction.
- Is “About this ad” available? That control can add delivery context, but it is not guaranteed for every user.
- What is documented versus inferred? OpenAI’s policy says ads do not influence answers and shopping results are not ads. A visual impression alone cannot add facts that the interface does not disclose.
This method prevents a common error: confusing advertising status with recommendation quality. Sponsorship answers who paid for placement, not whether the product is safe, durable, affordable, or suitable.
What to verify before buying
Even when a placement is clearly classified, perform ordinary shopping checks. Open the merchant link and confirm the current price, stock status, shipping charge and timing, return policy, warranty terms, seller identity, and any regional restrictions. ChatGPT’s displayed information may not update at the same time as a retailer’s listing. A shopping result’s non-ad status does not guarantee these details.

For an ad, do not assume the landing page is an independent review. The advertiser controls its own copy and destination. For an answer-only recommendation, ask ChatGPT for alternatives and the criteria used, then verify important specifications directly with the manufacturer or seller. These steps evaluate the purchase separately from the sponsorship question.

Mistake: treating every product card as an ad
A shopping card can contain a product image, price, and purchase link without being a paid ad. Check whether the interface identifies it as a shopping result and apply OpenAI’s stated distinction.

A compact checklist for documenting a recommendation
- Is the word Sponsored attached to the placement?
- Is the item a visually separate unit below the response?
- Does the interface call it a shopping result or carousel?
- Does an About this ad or similar control open?
- Is the product only mentioned in ordinary answer prose?
- Are you distinguishing OpenAI’s policy statement from independently verified evidence?
- Have you avoided calling an ambiguous mention sponsored or unsponsored?
- For a purchase, have you checked the merchant’s current price, stock, shipping, and returns?
How to report what you found accurately
Use language that matches the evidence. For a labeled unit, write: “ChatGPT displayed a separate placement marked ‘Sponsored.’” For a shopping result, write: “ChatGPT displayed this as a shopping result; OpenAI says shopping results are not ads.” For an unlabeled sentence, write: “The answer mentioned the product, but the interface did not disclose a sponsorship status.”
Include the date, account plan, region, and whether you were signed in when documenting a result. Those details help explain why another person may see a different rollout. Preserve the relevant screen context rather than cropping out the answer, label, or control that establishes the distinction.
This wording preserves the difference between observation, OpenAI’s stated policy, and an unresolved possibility. It also prevents a screenshot from being presented as proof of a commercial relationship that the screen does not actually disclose.
When to seek more information
If a recommendation matters financially or medically, ask the seller or service provider directly about sponsorship, affiliate arrangements, and current terms. You can also consult the current OpenAI Help Center pages for changes to ad eligibility and shopping descriptions. If you are publishing an endorsement or affiliate link in the United States, review the FTC’s current guidance on clear, conspicuous material-connection disclosures and obtain legal advice for a specific campaign.
