To check whether an app or game is using your phone’s high-refresh display, measure two things separately: the display’s current refresh rate in hertz (Hz) and the app’s rendered frame rate in frames per second (FPS). A phone capable of 120 Hz does not make every app run at 120 FPS. The app may have its own cap, and the operating system may choose a lower display mode.
Refresh rate and FPS are different measurements
Refresh rate is how often the display updates each second. FPS is how many new frames an app or game produces each second. The display can refresh more often than an app produces unique frames: for example, a reading of 120 Hz on the screen and about 60 FPS in a game means the game is producing roughly 60 frames per second, not 120.
A phone’s advertised maximum is a hardware capability, not a promise that every app will use it. Apps can request or prefer certain frame rates, but the operating system selects the display mode based on the app and current device conditions. Check an app or game on Android
1. Enable the phone’s high-refresh display mode
Confirm that your model supports a high refresh rate, then look in the manufacturer’s display settings for an option such as High refresh rate, Adaptive refresh rate, or Smooth display. Names and menu locations differ by device, so there is no single Android Settings path that applies to every phone.

2. Show the current display refresh rate
On Android builds that provide the AOSP developer overlay, enable it at Settings > System > Developer options > Show refresh rate. If Developer options is not visible, the route to enable it varies by manufacturer and Android build. The overlay shows the display’s current refresh rate; it is not an app FPS counter. 3. Look for the game’s own FPS setting and counter
Open the game’s graphics or performance settings and check for a frame-rate cap or a high-frame-rate option. Enable the intended setting if it is available. Then look for an in-game FPS counter or a counter in the phone’s gaming overlay. Not every game or phone exposes one, and labels vary.

Compare the readings while playing:
- Display overlay: current screen refresh rate, in Hz.
- Game counter: frames the game is producing, in FPS.
If the display reads 120 Hz while the game counter is near 60 FPS, the screen is refreshing at 120 Hz but the game is not producing 120 unique frames per second.

Review the game’s frame-rate cap and the phone’s battery or gaming settings. Battery saver can restrict refresh-rate switching, while power-saving behavior and thermal throttling can limit game performance. Android’s system may also decline an app’s requested display rate. Android 15 sets a default 60 Hz refresh rate for games. Android’s game guidance says a higher rate, such as 120 FPS, requires an explicit request through the Frame Rate API or Swappy, and system limits can still keep the display at 60 Hz. This describes platform behavior, not a guarantee about any particular game or phone. Android Developers: Optimize refresh rates
Check an app or game on iPhone or iPad
Confirm that the device has ProMotion
Only supported iPhone and iPad models have ProMotion. Check Apple’s current model-specific specifications rather than assuming that every device in a product family supports it. Apple documents supported ProMotion ranges of 10–120 Hz on iPhone and 24–120 Hz on iPad Pro; these are variable ranges, not fixed operating rates. Understand what the system controls
Apple describes ProMotion refresh as system-managed. Apps can provide preferred frame-rate ranges, but they cannot force the display to use a precise rate. The system accounts for hardware and current conditions when choosing the refresh rate. Apps using system animation frameworks may get automatic frame pacing; games and custom-rendered apps depend on their own implementation. Apple does not document a universal consumer setting that forces every app to the display’s peak rate or a system-wide per-app FPS meter. What the available readings can—and cannot—tell you

Google Play Android vitals uses session-level frame timing from app-owned surfaces to assess game performance, including slow-session thresholds around 30 FPS or 20 FPS. That is developer quality telemetry, not an end-user list of which games support a particular phone’s maximum refresh rate.
