To check whether an Android game or app uses 120Hz, first confirm that your phone supports a display mode above 60Hz and that its high or adaptive refresh setting is enabled. Then observe the display while the app is active. Android’s “Show refresh rate” overlay can show the display’s current refresh behavior, but it does not prove the app is rendering 120 frames per second (FPS). For that, check the app’s own frame-rate setting or use a game-level FPS measurement.
Refresh rate and FPS are different measurements
Refresh rate, measured in hertz (Hz), describes how often the display updates. Frame rate, measured in frames per second (FPS), describes how many new frames an app or game produces. Android treats supported display modes and app frame-rate requests as separate concepts (Android display API).
A phone may be refreshing at 120Hz while a game produces fewer than 120 new frames per second. Conversely, an app can request a higher frame rate without the system selecting it. Android Developers says the scheduler considers multiple factors and does not guarantee that an app will receive the frame rate it requests with setFrameRate() (Android frame-rate API).

1. Confirm the phone supports a rate above 60Hz
Check the specifications for your exact phone model or look in its display settings for a high-refresh or adaptive-refresh option. Model variants can differ, so do not assume that every phone in a product family has the same display modes. For a technical check, Android provides Display.getSupportedModes() to enumerate modes supported by a display (Android game frame-pacing guidance).

2. Enable the phone’s high or adaptive refresh setting
In Settings, look for a display or motion-smoothness option and select the high or adaptive mode if one is available. The name and location vary by manufacturer, device and Android version; there is no single menu path that applies to all Android phones.
3. Turn on the refresh-rate overlay
Android’s open-source documentation describes a Developer options setting commonly called “Show refresh rate” (AOSP refresh-rate documentation). If you cannot find it, search Settings for “Show refresh rate”; the option’s location and wording may differ across device software.

4. Observe the display while using the app
Open the app or game and use it—scroll, animate or play—while watching the overlay. The displayed rate can change with content and activity, particularly on devices using adaptive refresh. Android 15’s adaptive refresh rate is available only on enabled devices, and its behavior depends on the platform and device implementation (AOSP adaptive refresh-rate documentation).

5. Check the game’s frame-rate setting separately
Look for an in-game FPS or frame-rate option, and consult the game’s own support information for device eligibility. To establish the game’s rendered FPS, use a game-level counter or a reliable frame-time measurement; the Android refresh-rate overlay is not an FPS counter.

6. Check conditions if the rate is lower than expected
Review battery-saving and performance settings, and consider whether the phone is hot. Android may limit a requested rate because of power-saving policies or thermal conditions. Retest under comparable conditions rather than assuming that enabling a high-refresh display mode overrides system limits (Android game frame-pacing guidance; Android frame-rate API).
Why a game may stay at 60 FPS on a 120Hz phone
A 120Hz display is only one part of the chain. The game must support and request a higher frame rate, the phone must allow the relevant display mode, and Android’s scheduler must select a suitable rate. A game may have its own cap or may not offer a high-frame-rate option for your device.

Android Developers states that Android 15 sets a default 60Hz refresh rate for games to optimize power consumption. The guidance says games must explicitly request higher rates, such as 120 FPS, through the Frame Rate API or Swappy. This is specific to Android 15 guidance, not a rule to apply without qualification to every Android version; it also does not mean that every existing game uses either mechanism or provides a 120 FPS setting (Android game refresh-rate guidance).
How to describe what you measured
- If the overlay reads 120Hz, say that the display is currently refreshing at 120Hz.
- Say a game is rendering at 120 FPS only when a game-level FPS counter or reliable frame-time measurement shows that frame production.
- For a technical frame-time check, 120 FPS corresponds to about 8.333 milliseconds per frame, according to Google Play Console (Android vitals frame-rate guidance). This conversion does not guarantee that a game will reach that rate.
If comparing phones or games, compare the same factors: supported display modes, fixed versus adaptive behavior, the game’s maximum FPS option, measured in-game frame rate under comparable conditions, and whether power or temperature settings change the result.
