Short answer: you need two separate checks. First, establish where the installed rippled build came from and compare its version with current official XRPL release and installation guidance. Second, inspect the node’s runtime trust and synchronization state with rippled validators and rippled server_info. A valid validator-list signature, an active list, a sensible quorum and a populated complete_ledgers range show that the node is configured and operating on the network as expected. They do not prove that the local executable is authentic or has not been modified.
What “trusted software” means on XRPL
XRPL operators often use “trusted” to describe two different things. Keeping them separate prevents a healthy-looking node from being mistaken for a verified installation.
| Check | What it establishes | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Software provenance | The installed build identity, release channel and any package signature or checksum validation supplied by that channel. | That the node is listening to the right validators or has synchronized. |
| Runtime and network trust | Which validator-list publishers and validator keys the server accepts, whether lists are signed and current, the configured quorum, and whether ledger history is available. | That the rippled binary itself came from an authentic source or was not replaced after installation. |
Consensus trust in XRPL is local to each server. A server uses a Unique Node List (UNL), meaning a set of validators whose proposals it considers when reaching consensus. The UNL is a network-configuration decision; it is not a software-integrity attestation. A node can have an appropriate UNL and still be running a binary installed from the wrong source. Conversely, a correctly installed binary can be configured with an obsolete or unsuitable list.
The practical goal is therefore not one “trusted” indicator. It is a chain of evidence: identify the executable and release, verify any integrity metadata that the official release channel actually publishes, confirm that signed validator-list data is accepted, and check that the process has synchronized ledgers.

What you need before checking
- Administrative access to the server running
rippled. - The exact installed version or build identifier, including whether it came from a package, a source build or another distribution channel.
- Read access to the active
rippled.cfg(or the configuration file used by your service). - Permission to run the local administrative commands
rippled validatorsandrippled server_info. - A current copy of the official XRPL release and installation guidance for the operating system and architecture you use.
- A maintenance window or change procedure if the validator-list endpoint, publisher key or package must be changed.
Run the commands against the same instance that serves your production traffic. A command executed against a test configuration can report a perfectly valid state that says nothing about the production node. If several services or containers are present, note the service name, process ID, executable path and configuration path before interpreting any output.
Step-by-step verification
1. Record the installed build and its release channel
Start by writing down the version, build date and package source shown by your installation method. On builds that expose a version option, rippled --version may print the software identity; if that option is unavailable, use the binary or package manager’s documented version display and record the result verbatim. Also record the path of the executable that your service starts, so an administrator can distinguish it from an older copy elsewhere on the server. For a source build, preserve the source revision and build notes available in your internal deployment record.
Compare that identity with the current official XRPL release and installation material. Check the operating-system package, CPU architecture and release channel, not just the numeric version. A version number copied from an untrusted binary is only a label, so this step is evidence gathering rather than proof. Pay attention to whether the node is on a supported release line and whether the installation instructions have changed since the machine was provisioned.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →The official material reviewed for this guide does not provide one complete, current, source-backed procedure for validating every rippled package with a cryptographic signature or checksum. Do not invent a hash, signing key or verification command. If the release channel publishes a signature or checksum, follow that channel’s own instructions and retain the downloaded metadata and verification result with your change records. If it does not, document the limitation instead of treating a matching filename or version string as cryptographic evidence.
When investigating a suspicious host, compare the recorded executable path with the service definition and package database. A correct version installed in one directory does not prove that the service is launching that copy. Avoid replacing files in place before preserving logs, package metadata and the original path; those details may be needed for incident analysis.
2. Inspect validator-list configuration
Open the active configuration and locate the validator-list sections. In the official validators-example.txt, [validator_list_sites] identifies list endpoints and [validator_list_keys] contains trusted publisher keys. The publisher key authenticates the signed list document; it is different from the individual validator keys contained in that document. Confusing those two key types is a common source of incorrect troubleshooting.
A server should accept a fetched list only when its signature validates against a publisher key that the configuration trusts. Confirm that the endpoint and publisher key are the pair intended for your deployment, and check for duplicate, obsolete or mistyped entries. Keep a copy of the configuration before editing it so that a failed change can be reverted. Verify that the file you inspect is the file loaded by the running service, not merely an example file installed with a package.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
The example configuration explicitly states: “Manually listing validator keys is not recommended for production networks.” Manual entries can also create inadequate overlap between lists, which may lead servers to support contradictory validated ledgers. Use a maintained, signed list unless you have a documented reason and the operational expertise to manage a custom arrangement. If a custom list is unavoidable, record who controls its publisher key, how it is rotated and how operators will detect expiration.
Publisher-list signatures authenticate the list data, not the people or organizations behind every validator key. The list tells your server which validator identities to trust for consensus; it does not certify those operators’ host security, uptime or binary provenance. Treat the list as one layer in the trust model.

3. Run rippled validators
From the node’s administrative environment, run:
rippled validators
The command is useful for checking the runtime view of validator-list trust. Review each part of the response rather than looking for one magic line:
- Publisher-list availability: whether the configured list endpoint was reached and a list was loaded.
- List status: an active status indicates that the list is currently usable. An inactive, stale or failed status requires investigation.
- Expiration: the date and time through which the list is valid. An expired list is not a current trust source, even if its previous contents were familiar.
- Trusted validator keys: the validators selected from accepted lists and the keys used to identify them.
- Quorum: the threshold the server uses when evaluating agreement among its trusted validators.
Save the complete response with a timestamp. A single snapshot can be misleading during a refresh, restart or network outage, while repeated output shows whether availability and expiration are changing as expected. Compare the configured publisher key with the key reported by the accepted list; do not infer that a familiar validator key proves the publisher key is correct.

They are not universal targets and should not be copied as today’s expected numbers. Compare the structure and status with the current upstream configuration instead. A larger validator count is not automatically safer, and lowering a quorum merely to obtain an “active” appearance can alter the safety assumptions of the deployment.
4. Run rippled server_info
Next run:
rippled server_info
Find the complete_ledgers field. A populated, valid range indicates that the node has synchronized ledger history. An empty value, a fragmented range or a range that never advances points to a synchronization or storage problem. Record the value more than once if you are diagnosing startup; a node may need time to catch up after a restart.
Ledger history requirements depend on how the server is operated, so do not assume that every deployment must retain the same range or archive depth. The useful question here is whether the field is valid and advancing for the role you configured. Correlate it with peer and storage logs when the range is empty or stalled.
This is a health check, not a provenance check. A modified executable could still answer server_info and report a plausible ledger range. Treat the result as evidence that the running process is participating and has data, not as a cryptographic statement about the binary.
5. Check the current list endpoint and migration status
Do not assume that a configuration copied from an old server is still current. The June 2, 2025 migration guidance for the XRPL Foundation list said that the old list would expire on January 18, 2026. That deadline has passed. A node that still relies only on the retired list may stop connecting, and some multiple-list threshold configurations can also be disrupted.
The current example configuration observed for this guide names https://unl.xrplf.org and publisher key ED42AEC58B701EEBB77356FFFEC26F83C1F0407263530F068C7C73D392C7E06FD1. Treat those values as time-sensitive configuration data, not permanent constants. Verify the present official example, then confirm the effective endpoint, key and expiration in your own rippled validators output. A value shown in a document can become stale; the node’s current output is the operational check.
If you update the endpoint or publisher key, restart rippled using your service manager, wait for it to initialize, and run both administrative commands again. Record the before-and-after output so you can prove which configuration was active during an incident. Check all production instances, including standby nodes, because leaving one host on the old list can create an avoidable failover problem.

|---|---|---|
| List is active, unexpired and signed by a configured publisher key | The server can authenticate the validator-list data it fetched. | Confirm the validator keys and quorum are the ones your policy expects; continue to synchronization checks. |
| List endpoint unavailable | The server cannot refresh list data. It may be using cached information or no usable list at all. | Check DNS, outbound connectivity, TLS inspection, firewall rules and the endpoint spelling. Re-run rippled validators after correction. |
| List expired | The list is no longer current, regardless of whether the node is still running. | Obtain the current official endpoint and publisher key, update configuration, restart the service and verify the new expiration. |
| No trusted validator keys | The publisher list was not accepted, the key is wrong, or the configuration did not load. | Inspect the active configuration, spelling and permissions, then review logs for signature or parsing errors. |
| Quorum appears inconsistent with the configured lists | Multiple lists or manual entries may not provide enough overlap, or a threshold may be unsuitable for the current set. | Compare every list and threshold with current official guidance; avoid guessing a replacement quorum. |
complete_ledgers is empty or stalled |
The node is not synchronized or cannot retain the requested history. | Investigate peer connectivity, storage capacity, amendments and server logs; do not treat a nonempty validator response as proof of synchronization. |
| Version looks current but executable path is unexpected | The service may be launching a different copy than the one inspected. | Check service arguments, package records and file ownership before approving the host. |
Common failure cases and recovery paths
The list says inactive or expired
First capture the complete rippled validators response and the active configuration. Confirm the system clock, because an incorrect clock can make a valid expiration appear to be in the past. Then verify that the endpoint is reachable and that the publisher key exactly matches the current official configuration. After changing the file, restart the service and wait for a fresh fetch. An active status is meaningful only when its expiration is still in the future.
The endpoint changed but the node still shows the old list
Check which configuration file the service actually loads. It is common to edit an example file while the running service uses a different path. Inspect the service definition, confirm file permissions, restart the intended instance and compare its process arguments with the file you edited. Run rippled validators only after the restart has completed. If several instances share a host, identify each one separately.
The node has validators but no complete ledger range
Validator-list trust and ledger synchronization are independent. A server can load signed list data while failing to obtain or store ledgers. Check peer connections, available disk space, database errors and the node’s synchronization logs. Allow time for catch-up after a restart, but escalate if the range remains empty or stops advancing. Do not “fix” a storage problem by changing validator keys; those settings address different layers.
Different lists produce contradictory results
Review overlap between the lists and the threshold that combines them. The official example warns that inadequate overlap can result in contradictory validated ledgers. Remove accidental duplicates, obsolete manual keys and stale endpoints. Do not solve the problem by lowering a threshold simply to make the status look healthy; that changes the trust model and can weaken safety. Make one controlled configuration change at a time and record its effect on list status and ledger validation.
Recommended Free Tools
The version is current, but you cannot prove the binary is authentic
That limitation is real. A reported version, a valid list signature and a synchronized ledger do not demonstrate that the executable on disk matches a publisher’s build. Obtain a package or source archive through the official release channel, use any signature or checksum procedure that channel currently documents, and compare the executable path and package metadata on the host. If no official verification procedure is published for your distribution, document that gap rather than substituting a third-party hash or an informal claim.
A migration was applied on one node but not another
Compare configuration versions, service restart times and rippled validators output across every production and standby instance. The Foundation-list deadline of January 18, 2026 is already elapsed, so an apparently healthy primary does not make an unupdated standby safe. Test failover only after both nodes show the intended current list and a valid ledger range.
What each check proves—and what it cannot
- Installed version comparison: identifies whether your stated build corresponds to a current release line; it does not by itself authenticate the bytes on disk.
- Publisher-key validation: authenticates the validator-list document against a trusted publisher key; it does not authenticate the node executable.
- Trusted validator keys: show which validators the server uses for consensus decisions; they do not prove those operators’ software or identity beyond the list’s trust model.
- Quorum: shows the threshold configured for agreement; it is not a security score.
complete_ledgers: shows that ledger history is available to the running server; it does not certify the process’s origin.- Deprecated registries or historical examples: provide context about past operations; they are not current proof of validator reputation or package authenticity.
The distinction matters during incident response. If a node is synchronized but the package provenance is uncertain, preserve the host, obtain a known-good release through the official channel and compare or reinstall according to current vendor instructions. If provenance is sound but the list is expired, fix configuration and list freshness instead of replacing software unnecessarily. If both are uncertain, isolate the affected instance from production decisions while retaining its logs and configuration for review.
A repeatable operator checklist
- Record the executable path, installed version or build identifier and installation channel.
- Compare that information with current official XRPL release and installation guidance for your platform.
- Use the release channel’s documented signature or checksum process when one is provided; retain the verification record.
- Inspect
[validator_list_sites]and[validator_list_keys]in the configuration actually loaded by the service. - Confirm that publisher-list signatures validate and that manual production validator entries are not being used without a documented reason.
- Run
rippled validators; record list status, expiration, trusted validator keys, publisher availability and quorum. - Run
rippled server_info; verify thatcomplete_ledgerscontains a valid, advancing range. - Check the current official list endpoint and migration notices. The January 18, 2026 Foundation-list deadline from the 2025 guidance is already elapsed.
- After any configuration change, restart the correct service instance and repeat both commands.
- Store command output, configuration version, timestamps and the decision made so another operator can reproduce the check.
- Repeat the review after upgrades, failovers, publisher-key changes and major configuration edits.
This checklist is suitable for a change record or an incident ticket. It creates an audit trail without claiming more certainty than the commands provide. A “pass” should mean that the specified evidence was collected and matched the deployment policy, not that every possible compromise has been ruled out.

Frequently asked questions
Does rippled validators prove that my software is trusted?
No. It reports validator-list publishers, signatures, expiration, trusted validator keys and quorum as seen by the running process. Those results show network trust configuration. They do not verify the origin or unmodified state of the executable.
What is the difference between a publisher key and a validator key?
A publisher key is trusted to sign a validator-list document. Validator keys identify the individual validators listed in that document. The first authenticates list data; the second identifies the consensus participants your server follows.
Is an active list enough to show that the node is synchronized?
No. Use rippled server_info and inspect complete_ledgers. A valid, advancing range is evidence that ledger history is available. List status and synchronization can fail independently.
Can I keep manually entered validator keys in production?
The official example says manual listing is not recommended for production networks. Manual entries can reduce overlap between lists and contribute to contradictory validated ledgers. Use a maintained signed list unless you have a documented operational requirement and understand the consequences.
Are the sample quorum and validator counts from migration instructions still targets?
No. Such figures describe a list at a particular time. They can change as list membership and policy change. Verify current upstream configuration and your node’s actual output rather than copying historical numbers.
What should I do about the January 18, 2026 deadline?
It has already passed. Treat the 2025 notice as an elapsed migration warning: verify that every instance uses the current official endpoint and publisher key, restart where necessary, and confirm a current expiration with rippled validators.
Does the old XRP Validator Registry verify validator software?
No current assurance should be inferred from that registry. Its wiki page and API are marked deprecated. Use current official configuration and runtime guidance instead.
Should I buy a server or security product to verify the binary?
No physical server, storage device or consumer repair product establishes software provenance. Verification depends on the official release channel’s package or source integrity instructions and on preserving the evidence from your host.

Bottom line
Use rippled validators to verify the node’s signed validator-list data, trusted keys, quorum and list expiration, and use rippled server_info to verify that ledger history is available. Separately verify the installed build against current official release material and any package-integrity procedure that the release channel publishes. These runtime checks demonstrate network configuration and health; they do not, on their own, prove that the local rippled executable is authentic.
