To check an SSD, identify its complete model and firmware, read the manufacturer’s documentation for that exact variant, and then use a protocol-aware utility to display the commands the drive actually reports. Check the drive through a connection that passes storage-management commands directly; a USB enclosure or RAID controller can hide capabilities that exist on the SSD.

Do not treat a menu item labelled “secure erase” as proof of support or of a particular security outcome. ATA/SATA and NVMe use different command families, and sanitization options are optional, firmware-controlled features. Verify the method, coverage and assurance for your specific drive before running anything destructive.

What “sanitize” and “secure erase” mean on an SSD

Sanitization is the objective, not one universal command. NIST defines media sanitization as “a process that renders access to target data on the media infeasible for a given level of effort.” The appropriate technique depends on the information’s sensitivity, the drive’s design and the policy you must satisfy. An SSD utility may call an operation secure erase, sanitize, crypto erase, block erase or format, but those labels can refer to different command paths and different assurances.

Flash translation layers, overprovisioned space, spare blocks and controller-managed caches make an SSD unlike a simple magnetic disk. The drive firmware decides which areas an operation addresses and whether the operation is implemented as an overwrite, block erase or cryptographic key destruction. Consequently, a brand name, an “NVMe” label or the presence of a generic erase button does not establish support for every method.

Sanitize support is model- and firmware-specific

Two capacities in the same product family can expose different commands. A firmware update, regional SKU or self-encrypting configuration can also change the available methods. Record the exact part number and firmware revision before looking up support; a family-level specification is not sufficient evidence.

Secure erase is not a single protocol

On ATA/SATA devices, software may expose ATA Security Erase or ATA Sanitize features. NVMe devices can expose the NVMe Sanitize command and secure-erase settings in Format NVM. SAS/SCSI devices have their own command sets. These are distinct operations even when a utility places them under one “secure erase” heading.

Check these details before you inspect capabilities

Capability checks are normally non-destructive, but executing an erase is not. Preserve anything you need before proceeding and make sure the drive is not the active boot device unless the manufacturer provides an offline procedure.

  • Confirm that you have a verified backup and a recovery plan.
  • Record the drive’s manufacturer, complete model or part number, serial number and firmware revision.
  • Note whether it is SATA/ATA, NVMe, SAS/SCSI or another device type.
  • Record whether it is a self-encrypting drive, part of a RAID array, or attached through a storage controller.
  • Plan to remove the drive from service before any destructive command. A sanitize operation can make every sector and the encryption keys needed to interpret it unavailable.

If the SSD contains regulated or highly sensitive information, identify the policy that governs disposal first. NIST SP 800-88 Rev. 2, published in September 2025, is the current NIST edition and supersedes Rev. 1. It frames sanitization as a risk-based decision rather than a guarantee attached to a command name.

Step 1: Identify the exact SSD and firmware

Start with information reported by the drive, not the computer model or the enclosure label. Capture the model string exactly, including suffixes and capacity, because vendors often publish separate manuals for near-identical variants.

Use the operating system only to establish identity

Windows Device Manager, the system firmware storage page and the operating system’s disk-information tools can reveal the model and firmware. On Linux, a block-device listing can show the model and transport, while NVMe administration tools can display the controller model and firmware. These inventory views are useful for identification; they do not prove that a sanitize command is available.

When a USB enclosure is involved, the operating system may show the bridge’s identity instead of the SSD’s native model. Remove that ambiguity by checking the label, the enclosure’s pass-through information and, where possible, the drive connected directly to the motherboard.

Record the transport and topology

Write down whether the device is a native SATA port, an M.2 NVMe slot, a PCIe add-in card, a SAS backplane, a USB bridge or a RAID logical volume. A utility that sees only a logical RAID disk cannot necessarily query the individual SSDs. This topology determines which commands can reach the controller.

Step 2: Read the manufacturer’s documentation for that variant

Search the vendor’s support site and manual using the complete model and firmware family. Useful terms include “sanitize,” “secure erase,” “ATA Security Erase Unit,” “ATA Sanitize,” “NVMe Sanitize,” “Format NVM,” “crypto erase” and “block erase.” Look for a statement that the method is implemented on your exact model, not merely listed in a general utility guide.

What the documentation should tell you

  • Which protocol command is supported and under what firmware conditions.
  • Whether the operation is block erase, overwrite, cryptographic erase or another mechanism.
  • Which user-accessible and hidden areas are covered, including caches, spare blocks and overprovisioned space.
  • Whether a self-encrypting configuration, password lock or security state is required.
  • How completion is reported, the expected duration and any required power or cooling conditions.
  • Whether the vendor assigns a Clear, Purge or other policy classification, and the evidence behind that classification.

Documentation can also reveal dependencies outside the SSD. For example, a manufacturer support page for a consumer NVMe model notes that system and BIOS features affect which management functions are available. Treat such requirements as part of the support test rather than assuming that every compatible computer exposes every command.

Separate current guidance from legacy tables

Some vendor articles still cite NIST SP 800-88 Rev. 1 or IEEE 2883-2022. Those materials can describe how a vendor implements a command, but their classifications should not be presented as if they were tables from the current Rev. 2. Rev. 2’s publication record is dated September 2025; consult the full current guidance and the drive-specific evidence when a policy decision depends on the classification.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Step 3: Ask a protocol-aware utility what the drive reports

Use the SSD manufacturer’s management application or a protocol-aware utility that explicitly lists supported sanitize and erase methods. The important output is the device-reported capability, not merely the software’s generic menu.

ATA/SATA capability output

For an ATA drive, look for entries such as Security Erase Unit, Enhanced Security Erase and ATA Sanitize. Seagate’s open-source openSeaChest documentation, for example, describes the --showEraseSupport option as a way to report methods supported by the device and whether they are associated with Clear or Purge capability. The same documentation says implementations are optional and controlled by firmware. Use that output as an inventory of what the connected drive advertises, then confirm the interpretation in the vendor’s model documentation.

NVMe capability output

For NVMe, inspect controller information and the supported Sanitize capabilities. The Linux NVMe project’s nvme sanitize command issues the NVMe Sanitize command and reports the result. Its documented actions include block erase, overwrite and crypto erase. A controller that lacks the relevant capability bits cannot be made to support that action by choosing a different menu item.

Also inspect Format NVM support. Format NVM can request a secure erase setting, but it is a separate command path from NVMe Sanitize. A reference in the openSeaChest documentation warns that Format NVM crypto erase is not considered Purge without supporting vendor documentation. Therefore, do not equate a tool’s “crypto erase” label with a verified Purge result.

Do not confuse a failed probe with unsupported hardware

If the utility reports no sanitize methods, first check whether it can identify the native controller and read its capabilities. A bridge may pass Identify and SMART data while blocking security or sanitize commands. A RAID controller may expose only a logical volume. Reconnect the drive through a documented direct path and repeat the read-only capability check before concluding that the SSD lacks support.

Step 4: Verify that the connection passes the command

Command pass-through is a separate question from drive support. USB-to-SATA and USB-to-NVMe bridges do not universally forward Security Erase, Sanitize or Format NVM commands. Some adapters intentionally restrict destructive commands; others expose only identification and health data.

  1. Shut down and connect the SSD to a native motherboard SATA port, M.2 slot or other vendor-documented interface when practical.
  2. If a PCIe carrier, backplane or HBA is required, check that its firmware and driver support direct management commands.
  3. Temporarily bypass a RAID volume and address the individual drive, following the controller vendor’s maintenance procedure.
  4. Run the utility’s read-only capability report again and compare it with the result through the original enclosure or controller.
  5. Document which path produced the capability result. A method visible only on the direct path should not be treated as available through the enclosure.

Do not use a USB bridge as a test of the SSD’s intrinsic capabilities unless the bridge manufacturer explicitly documents pass-through for the required command family.

Protocol differences you must account for

Drive or command family Names you may see What to verify Important limitation
ATA/SATA Security Erase Unit, Enhanced Security Erase, ATA Sanitize Exact model and firmware support; areas covered; vendor’s Clear or Purge evidence; security-lock state Implementations are optional. Enhanced and normal Security Erase are distinct methods, and a utility label alone does not establish assurance.
NVMe Sanitize Block erase, overwrite, crypto erase Controller-reported Sanitize capability and the vendor’s explanation of the selected action The command is available only when the controller advertises it. Duration, progress and completion behavior are device-specific.
NVMe Format NVM Secure-erase setting, crypto erase Format NVM support and vendor evidence for the resulting assurance A Format NVM crypto erase is not automatically Purge; supporting vendor documentation is required.
SAS/SCSI or translated storage Device-specific sanitize or erase commands Command-set support, controller or bridge pass-through and individual-drive visibility Availability depends on the device implementation and the complete host path.

How to compare two supported methods

  • Coverage: Identify the media areas, caches and spare regions addressed. Note exclusions explicitly.
  • Mechanism: Record whether the action performs block erase, overwrite or cryptographic erase. For crypto erase, document how the vendor shows that key destruction meets your required assurance.
  • Assurance classification: Use the manufacturer’s stated Clear, Purge or equivalent classification. Never infer a classification from “secure erase” in a graphical interface.
  • Device and path: Confirm support on the exact model and firmware through the connection that will be used for the operation.
  • Verification: Check whether the utility reports a completion status or result code and what validation the vendor requires afterward.
  • Operational constraints: Record lock states, active volumes, RAID membership, required power conditions and any maintenance-mode procedure.
  • Time and recovery: Follow the vendor’s duration guidance and decide what you will do if the operation pauses, fails or loses power.

Troubleshooting a missing or unavailable option

The SSD appears, but no erase method is listed

Confirm that the utility is addressing the physical drive rather than a logical volume. Then repeat the probe on a direct motherboard connection. If the native path still reports no method, consult the exact model manual; the feature may simply not be implemented or may require a firmware family different from the one installed.

The utility sees only SMART data through USB

This is typical of a bridge that does not pass security commands. Move the drive to a native interface or use only a bridge explicitly documented to forward the required command. Do not attempt to work around a blocked command by selecting an unrelated overwrite option.

The drive is locked or security-enabled

ATA security states, passwords and frozen configurations can prevent an erase command from being issued. Follow the manufacturer’s unlock or maintenance procedure and confirm that you are acting on the intended device. Do not remove a lock or power-cycle repeatedly without understanding the vendor’s recovery instructions.

The SSD is behind RAID

A RAID controller may hide individual capabilities and may intercept destructive commands. Use the controller’s documented per-drive maintenance path, or temporarily connect the SSD directly after ensuring that removing it will not damage the array. A logical-volume erase is not evidence that every member drive was sanitized.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A command reports success but policy evidence is missing

Completion is not the same as a security classification. Retain the utility output, model and firmware identifiers, command selected, connection path and vendor documentation. If the vendor cannot explain coverage or assurance for the method, escalate to your security authority or use an approved destruction or sanitization service instead of claiming a higher level than the evidence supports.

When the drive cannot be reliably sanitized

If no supported method reaches the required assurance, stop treating a generic erase as a solution. Isolate the SSD and follow your organization’s approved fallback, which may include a verified physical-destruction process or a qualified media-sanitization provider. The appropriate fallback depends on your policy, the data sensitivity and whether the device must remain reusable.

Do not dispose of the drive merely because a utility failed to display a menu item. First rule out a blocked connection, RAID translation, wrong model identification and firmware-specific requirements. Conversely, do not keep retrying destructive commands on a drive that lacks documented coverage; repeated attempts do not create a missing capability.

A final pre-execution checklist

  1. Model, part number, serial and firmware are recorded.
  2. Interface and topology are known, including USB, RAID and self-encrypting status.
  3. The exact-model manual confirms the proposed command family.
  4. A protocol-aware utility reports the method on the connected physical drive.
  5. The connection path is documented as passing that command.
  6. Coverage, mechanism and vendor assurance are written down.
  7. The selected method satisfies the applicable policy and sensitivity level.
  8. Backups, recovery media and authorization are complete.
  9. The drive is offline or in the vendor-required maintenance state.
  10. Completion and verification evidence will be retained.

Only after every item is satisfied should you follow the manufacturer’s destructive procedure. Capability checking tells you what the SSD and host path can do; it does not, by itself, sanitize any data.
