Short answer: do not treat an OpenAI API call, an OpenAI-related name or logo, a GitHub connection, or an application to an OpenAI program as proof of affiliation. Verify the exact claim against a current OpenAI-controlled announcement, project listing, direct statement, or authentic written authorization. Then describe only the relationship that evidence supports—such as API user, customer, grantee, program participant, partner, contributor, or OpenAI-owned project.
This distinction matters because “official,” “supported by,” “partner,” “powered by,” and “uses the API” carry different meanings. A project can use OpenAI technology without being owned, funded, endorsed, or operated by OpenAI.
What “affiliated with OpenAI” can mean
Affiliation is not one legal or technical status. Before checking a project, define the relationship being claimed. A statement that is accurate for one category can be misleading when expanded into another.
| Relationship | What it normally establishes | What it does not establish by itself |
|---|---|---|
| OpenAI-owned project | OpenAI controls the project, its repository, or the operating entity, as confirmed by OpenAI. | It is not proven by a similar name, logo, or a repository hosted on GitHub. |
| Formal partner | A documented commercial, technical, or strategic relationship with a stated scope. | It does not automatically mean ownership, endorsement of every feature, or permanent status. |
| Program participant or grantee | An OpenAI program has named or accepted the project, with the relevant date and terms. | It does not turn the project into an OpenAI subsidiary or prove a broader partnership. |
| Contributor or maintainer | A person may contribute to an OpenAI project or represent an independent project. | Being employed by, contracted by, or known to OpenAI is not proof that every personal project is official. |
| Customer or API user | The project or its operator uses an OpenAI product or API under the applicable account terms. | It does not prove sponsorship, endorsement, funding, ownership, or partnership. |
| Integration | The software connects to an OpenAI model or service. | It does not establish a corporate relationship beyond the documented technical use. |
Use the narrowest label that the evidence supports. If the only proof is a configuration file showing an API endpoint, “uses OpenAI’s API” is defensible; “official OpenAI project” is not.

Start by recording the exact claim
Do not investigate a vague impression such as “this feels official.” Preserve the wording and context before evaluating it, because the wording determines what evidence you need.
- Copy the project’s exact name. Record capitalization, punctuation, and any organization name.
- Save the repository URL and the page making the claim. Note whether it is a README, website, social post, grant announcement, package listing, or account profile.
- Quote the relationship language. Examples include “official,” “partner,” “supported by,” “funded by,” “selected for,” “powered by,” “uses GPT,” or “uses the OpenAI API.”
- Record the date and location. A claim in an old release, cached page, or personal post may not describe the current relationship.
- Write the implied scope. Is the statement about one model, one repository, one organization, one grant, or the entire project?
This record prevents a common error: starting with a logo or technical detail and unconsciously upgrading it into a corporate-affiliation claim.
Use an evidence hierarchy
Not every source has equal authority. Evaluate a source by who controls it, how specifically it identifies the project, and whether it states the relationship you are trying to verify.

Strongest evidence: a current OpenAI-controlled statement
The clearest evidence is a current page on an OpenAI-controlled site, an official program listing, or a direct OpenAI communication that names the exact project and describes the relationship. A generic page describing a program is weaker than a participant list that names the repository. A mention of a technology is weaker than a statement about ownership or partnership.
Written authorization
An authentic, current written authorization can support a limited claim, especially for communications or logo use. Check who issued it, what entity and project it covers, the permitted wording, its date, and whether it has expired or been revoked. Authorization to use a mark is not automatically authorization to claim funding, ownership, or endorsement.
Official program participation
If OpenAI names a project as accepted, supported, or funded in a specific program, report that program and date. Do not generalize participation into “OpenAI owns this project” or “OpenAI endorses everything it does.” Program terms may limit the relationship to a grant, credits, mentorship, or a particular workstream.

Project-authored statements
A maintainer’s own claim is useful as a lead, not independent confirmation. “Official partner” in a README remains an assertion until an OpenAI-controlled source or verifiable authorization corroborates it. The same applies to badges, press quotes, screenshots, and testimonials.

Third-party coverage
News articles, directories, social posts, and forum comments can point you toward evidence, but they should not be the final authority for a disputed affiliation. Follow their links to the underlying OpenAI statement and check whether the statement actually names the project.
Check OpenAI-controlled sources first
Search OpenAI’s official site, program pages, announcements, help documentation, and verified communications for both the project name and the claimed relationship. Search several exact spellings, the repository owner, and the project’s legal entity if it has one.
Prefer a source that answers all four questions:
- Does it name this exact project or repository?
- Does it identify OpenAI as the speaker or controlling publisher?
- Does it state the relationship rather than merely mention a model or product?
- Does it include a date and scope that are still current?
A page that says an OpenAI program exists does not prove that an applicant was accepted. A page that explains API access does not prove that a particular application is sponsored. A search result snippet is also not a substitute for reading the current page.
Inspect the repository and organization
Repository evidence can establish who publishes code and how a project is maintained, but it rarely proves corporate affiliation on its own.

- Review maintainers and commit history. Look for consistent identities, signed releases, governance documents, and links to official project pages.
- Read the README and license. Separate factual technical statements from marketing language such as “official” or “endorsed.”
- Inspect release history. Sudden transfers, archived repositories, or abandoned links may change what an old announcement means today.
- Follow outbound links. An official OpenAI page linking to the repository is stronger than a repository linking to itself or to an unaffiliated social account.
A GitHub repository can be public, forked, mirrored, or available to an integration without being owned or sponsored by OpenAI.
What GitHub authorization actually shows
OpenAI’s guide for connecting GitHub to ChatGPT explains that users authorize access to selected repositories and that an organization administrator may need to approve application access. That is permissioned, repository-specific access. It shows that an account or organization allowed an application to read or use selected resources; it does not establish OpenAI ownership, funding, endorsement, or a partnership with the repository.
Separate organization verification from affiliation
OpenAI may require organization verification for access to particular products, models, features, or programs. Verification proves only the scope communicated in the verification process.

OpenAI’s API Organization Verification guidance states: “Approval for one product, organization, workspace, or access path does not necessarily activate another one.” Treat that as a boundary condition. A verified API organization is not automatically a verified partner. Approval for one workspace does not prove approval for another. Access to a model does not prove participation in an open-source initiative.

Avoid the unqualified phrase “OpenAI-verified project” unless an OpenAI source uses that exact, project-specific status.
Evaluate claims about OpenAI programs and funding
Program claims need two separate checks: whether the project applied and whether OpenAI accepted or supported it.
The Codex open-source fund example
OpenAI’s Codex open-source fund page describes a $1 million initiative and says selected projects may receive grants of up to $25,000 in API credits. The page states that applications are reviewed on an ongoing basis and that funding decisions are at OpenAI’s sole discretion. Those figures describe the program; they do not indicate that a particular project is affiliated with OpenAI or will receive funding.
The application asks applicants which open-source project they represent and requests the project’s GitHub repository. That request proves only that an application process collects project and repository information. Submission is not acceptance. Before describing the fund as currently open, check the live program page because availability can change.
How to word a program finding
- Supported: “OpenAI lists Project X as a participant in the named program, according to the dated program page.”
- Application only: “Project X says it applied to the program; acceptance was not independently verified.”
- Unresolved: “The project references the program, but no OpenAI-controlled source found in this check names it as accepted.”
Do not turn a grant, credits award, or application into a blanket claim that OpenAI owns, operates, or endorses the project.

Understand brand and logo evidence
An OpenAI name or logo on a project page is not independent confirmation. OpenAI’s Design Guidelines instruct third parties: “Do not misrepresent your relationship with OpenAI, imply endorsement, or confuse users about sponsorship.” The same guidance treats accurate references to specific OpenAI models or APIs differently from relationship claims.
A project may accurately say that it uses a named OpenAI model, provided the reference is truthful and current. That wording should not be expanded into “official,” “endorsed,” or “sponsored.” Check whether the logo appears in a permitted context, whether the page identifies the relationship precisely, and whether the asset could simply have been copied.
Do not use OpenAI merchandise, stickers, or other tangible branded items as verification evidence. Brand guidance restricts mark use and says not to place the logo on tangible merchandise.
Compare competing claims systematically
When two projects make similar claims, score the evidence on the same axes instead of relying on appearance or popularity.
| Axis | Questions to ask | Higher-confidence indication |
|---|---|---|
| Source authority | Who published the statement? | A current OpenAI-controlled page or direct OpenAI communication. |
| Specificity | Does it name the exact project and relationship? | The repository, legal entity, and relationship are explicitly identified. |
| Relationship type | Is the claim ownership, partnership, funding, participation, customer use, or integration? | The wording matches one defined category rather than a vague “official” label. |
| Currentness | When was it published, and has the status changed? | A dated, current page or authorization with no contradictory update. |
| Scope | What exactly was approved or supported? | The evidence covers the same product, repository, organization, or program named in the claim. |
A project with a first-party program listing may have stronger evidence of participation than a project with a polished website and a logo. Conversely, neither may have evidence of ownership unless OpenAI explicitly says so.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Ask for confirmation when the public record is unclear
If the sources conflict or stop at an ambiguous marketing claim, request the underlying evidence from the project maintainer. Ask for the exact OpenAI announcement, program listing, or authorization, not a screenshot cropped away from its URL and date.
For questions about logo use or communications beyond the cases described in the brand guidance, OpenAI’s brand page provides a partner-communications route. For a legal or disputed claim, use the legal contact route described there. Do not infer a status from silence, a support ticket, or an employee’s informal comment.

OpenAI support may request information about identity, repository affiliation, maintainer status, or repository control before confirming benefits. Such a request can help establish who controls a project, but it is not itself a public endorsement.
Report the result without overstating it
Your conclusion should preserve the difference between what is established and what remains unknown.
When technical use is established
Use: “The project’s documentation and code show that it uses OpenAI’s API.” Add the named model or endpoint if relevant. Do not add “official” unless separate evidence supports it.
When program participation is established
Use: “OpenAI lists the project as a participant in [the named program], according to the dated first-party listing.” State the grant or credits terms only if the source says the project actually received them.
When a partnership is established
Use the exact scope in the OpenAI statement: for example, a collaboration for a particular product, event, or period. Avoid implying that every project feature or future release is endorsed.
When no direct evidence is found
Use: “I could not verify the claimed affiliation from the public sources checked.” This reports the search boundary without claiming that no private agreement exists. State which sources and dates you checked if the conclusion will be used in a compliance, procurement, or journalistic context.
Common mistakes and how to correct them
- “It uses the API, so it is official.” Correct it to a technical-use statement.
- “The logo proves sponsorship.” Treat the logo as an unverified project claim until a first-party source confirms the relationship.
- “GitHub access means OpenAI owns the repository.” Describe the permission as selected-repository access, not ownership.
- “The project applied for funding, so it is an OpenAI grantee.” Verify acceptance and distinguish an application from a discretionary award.
- “The organization passed verification, so it is an OpenAI partner.” Name the verified product, workspace, or access path instead.
- “No search result means there is no affiliation.” Report that public confirmation was not found; private agreements cannot be ruled out from a limited search.
- “A person associated with OpenAI created it, so it is official.” Verify the project’s legal owner and any explicit OpenAI statement.
A practical verification checklist
Use this checklist before publishing a review, accepting a dependency, or repeating an affiliation claim:
- Exact project name, repository, claimant, wording, location, and date recorded.
- Claim classified as ownership, partnership, program participation, funding, contribution, customer use, or integration.
- OpenAI-controlled sources searched for the exact project and relationship.
- First-party source names the same repository or legal entity, not merely a similar product.
- Repository owner, maintainers, transfer history, and outbound links inspected.
- API or model use separated from sponsorship and endorsement.
- GitHub permissions described as access, not ownership.
- Organization verification limited to its stated product, workspace, or access path.
- Program application distinguished from acceptance and awarded support.
- Brand or logo claims checked against OpenAI’s Design Guidelines.
- Conflicting or incomplete records referred to a dated authorization or direct confirmation.
- Final wording limited to the strongest claim the evidence actually supports.
What this process can and cannot prove
This method can establish a documented relationship, such as a named program award, a specific technical integration, or a first-party statement about a partnership. It can also prevent common false inferences from logos, API keys, repository permissions, and application forms.
