Potentially within minutes—or sooner—but there is no reliable countdown for an individual home router. Large-scale scanners can probe public internet addresses rapidly, and security reporting has described attack attempts on newly exposed services in less than a minute. That does not mean every router will be found on that schedule, or that a scan means the router has been hacked.
How quickly can an exposed router port be found?
Assume that an unnecessary service exposed to the public internet can be discovered. Scanners can test enormous numbers of addresses, but the time a particular scanner takes to encounter a particular home router depends on what it is looking for, how it scans, and whether the service responds.
A Yahoo Tech article matching this topic reports that researchers saw first attack attempts on newly internet-facing services in less than a minute. It also reports that ZMap can scan one port across public IPv4 addresses in under 45 minutes. Those figures are useful context, not a prediction for your router: the article’s underlying experiment and conditions could not be independently checked, and a broad scan is not the same as a guarantee that an attacker will identify or target every household service.

Historical research shows why exposure should not be treated as obscure. A 2014 study by researchers at the University of California, San Diego and the University of Michigan, An Internet-Wide View of Internet-Wide Scanning, examined scanning activity after vulnerability disclosures. In a case involving a backdoor affecting common Cisco, Linksys, and Netgear home and small-business routers on TCP/32764, researchers observed scanning begin after the December 2013 disclosure; Shodan began scanning within 48 hours, followed by other scans. This is historical evidence, not a current measurement of every home router’s exposure.

- DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
- AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
- EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
- OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
The study’s scale figures also need their original context: the researchers recorded 10.8 million scans from 1.76 million hosts during January 2014. In the scans they analyzed, rates reached 1.02 million packets per second with ZMap and 2.2 million packets per second with Masscan, though many scans ran much more slowly. These are observations from a 2014 dataset, not typical rates for a home connection or a measure of attacks on routers.
What an open port does—and does not—tell you
An open port means a service is reachable through that network path. It is not proof that anyone has accessed the router, and it does not by itself show that the service is vulnerable. An attacker would still need a weakness or misconfiguration, weak credentials, or another way to gain access.

- Dual-band Wi-Fi with 5 GHz speeds up to 867 Mbps and 2.4 GHz speeds up to 300 Mbps, delivering 1200 Mbps of total bandwidth¹. Dual-band routers do not support 6 GHz. Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- Covers up to 1,000 sq. ft. with four external antennas for stable wireless connections and optimal coverage.
- Supports IGMP Proxy/Snooping, Bridge and Tag VLAN to optimize IPTV streaming
- Access Point Mode - Supports AP Mode to transform your wired connection into wireless network, an ideal wireless router for home
- Advanced Security with WPA3 - The latest Wi-Fi security protocol, WPA3, brings new capabilities to improve cybersecurity in personal networks
Risk depends on what is listening, whether it is necessary, how it is configured, whether it is patched and supported, and how access is authenticated and restricted. A port-forwarding rule for a service you intentionally run is different from internet-accessible router administration you did not mean to enable.
How to check what is reachable from outside
- Review the router’s exposure settings. Look for port-forwarding rules, remote administration, and features that provide access to a game server, media server, or other device. Menu names vary by router and firmware, so use the documentation for your model rather than relying on a universal path.
- Check from an external connection. A scan from a device on your home Wi-Fi shows something about the local network, not necessarily what the public internet can reach. Check from a separate internet connection or use an authorized external exposure-checking service. Test only systems you own or are authorized to assess.
- Consider IPv6 as well as IPv4. If your router and internet provider use IPv6, verify that management interfaces and services are not unintentionally reachable over IPv6. CISA’s Internet Exposure Reduction Guidance specifically warns against unintended IPv6 management exposure.
Internet-wide inventories can help explain what external checks do: Rapid7 Project Sonar describes probing public IPv4 addresses to see whether service ports respond, then communicating with identified endpoints for additional information. It surveys more than 70 services and protocols. Such inventories are not a consumer guarantee that every service is captured at every moment.

- NIGHTHAWK WIFI 6 ROUTER FOR YOUR WHOLE HOME: Delivers fast, reliable WiFi across every room of your apartment or small home for streaming, gaming, video calls, and smart home devices, all running at the same time without slowing each other down.
- WORKS WITH YOUR EXISTING INTERNET SERVICE: Pairs with your existing modem or gateway via ethernet. Compatible with most cable, fiber, DSL, and satellite providers. Some gateways and modem router combos may require bridge mode. No coax needed.
- SET UP AND MANAGE YOUR NETWORK WITH THE NIGHTHAWK APP: Download the free Nighthawk app on iOS or Android for guided setup. Manage WiFi, run speed tests, pause devices, and set up guest networks from anywhere. Active internet required.
- READY FOR THE DEVICES YOU ALREADY OWN: Your phones, laptops, and TVs work right out of the box. WiFi 6 delivers speeds up to 1.8 Gbps across 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands. Backward compatible with WiFi 5 and earlier.
- COVERAGE IN EVERY ROOM: Covers up to 1,500 sq. ft. for up to 20 connected devices. Walls, floors, and interference can reduce range. Larger or multi-story homes may benefit from a NETGEAR Orbi mesh WiFi system.
What to do when you find an open port
If you do not recognize or need the service
Identify which router setting or device created the exposure, then disable the corresponding remote-access feature or remove its port-forwarding rule if it is unnecessary. Do not disable the router firewall as a workaround. If you cannot identify the service, consult the router documentation or your internet provider before changing settings you depend on.
If the service is needed
Keep the service and router software updated, use strong unique authentication, and restrict who can connect where your router or service allows it. Recheck the public exposure after changing settings. If the device or service no longer receives security updates, CISA advises replacing systems that have reached the end of security support.

Keep the rest of the router’s exposure under control
CISA’s guidance recommends disabling unnecessary, unused, exploitable, or plaintext protocols; applying security patches; changing default passwords; monitoring traffic where appropriate; and routinely assessing internet-accessible assets. It also says: “Regularly review and monitor your internet-accessible assets.” CISA lists Shodan, Censys, and Shadowserver as platforms that identify internet-connected assets; their inclusion does not imply CISA endorsement.
