Use two separate checks: first confirm that your exact game edition can launch on your PC, then test it at the resolution and graphics settings you actually intend to use. A requirements match can show basic compatibility, but it cannot guarantee stable performance, freedom from stutter, or acceptable image quality.
The reliable answer is therefore specific to the game version, storefront, Windows release, PC hardware, display settings, and a representative in-game scene.
What “runs well” actually means
“Runs” can describe two different outcomes:
- Launch compatibility: the game installs, starts, reaches its menu or a playable session, and does not immediately fail because of an unsupported operating system, missing runtime, launcher problem, driver issue, or hardware capability.
- Playability: the game sustains the experience you want at your chosen resolution and quality settings without distracting stutter, crashes, visual corruption, or input problems.
A computer can pass the first test and fail the second. Conversely, a game may have an old installer or launcher that needs troubleshooting even though the underlying graphics workload is light. Decide what “well” means for you before testing: your resolution, fullscreen or windowed mode, quality preset, display refresh rate, and tolerance for occasional pauses all affect the verdict. There is no single frame-rate threshold established for every game, genre, display, or player.
1. Identify the exact game you are checking
Older titles often have several editions that are not interchangeable for compatibility purposes. Record the information below before comparing specifications.

Find the publisher’s own minimum and recommended requirements for that exact edition and version. Copy the values rather than relying on a search result for a similarly named release. Do not substitute the requirements for Windows itself: an operating-system requirement says what Windows needs, not what the game needs.
Build a requirements checklist
Write down the game’s stated values for each category. If the publisher does not state a value, mark it as not stated instead of guessing.

2. Inventory the PC, including DirectX
Record the computer’s CPU, GPU, installed memory, Windows version, and graphics runtime before drawing a conclusion. Windows’ DirectX Diagnostic Tool, commonly called dxdiag, provides a documented way to check the DirectX version and save a diagnostic report.

- Open Start and search for dxdiag, then open DirectX Diagnostic Tool.
- On the System tab, read DirectX Version under System Information.
- Use the tool’s option to save all diagnostic information when you need to share the machine details with a support forum or the game publisher.
- Review the display-related information in the tool for the installed graphics device, then compare that model with the game’s requirement.

DirectX version is only one compatibility detail. Microsoft cautions: “If your PC doesn’t have the right version of DirectX installed (the product box should tell you which one you need), your game might not work properly.” That statement does not mean that having a newer DirectX number guarantees success. A game may depend on particular hardware features, legacy runtime components, drivers, a launcher, or another software dependency.
3. Compare the game’s requirements with the PC’s capabilities
Compare every category, not just the graphics card. Use the following interpretation to separate a likely launch blocker from a performance concern.

Do not turn this comparison into a single “yes” based on one component. A suitable GPU cannot compensate for an unsupported operating system, and sufficient RAM cannot supply a graphics API feature that the game requires.
4. What to do when the game will not launch
If the game fails before you can test a scene, work through the least invasive, documented steps first.

- Check for a game update. Use the game’s store, launcher, or publisher support page. Older applications can become incompatible after operating-system changes, and an update may contain the required fix.
- Run Program Compatibility Troubleshooter. In Windows, search Start for Program Compatibility Troubleshooter (it may also appear as Run programs made for previous versions of Windows) and follow the wizard for the game. Apply a suggested setting only if it improves this specific title.
- Update device drivers through Windows Update. Microsoft recommends checking Windows Update for driver updates when an older application continues to have problems.
- Use compatibility mode only when supported by instructions for that game. It is a troubleshooting option, not a universal fix. Record which setting you changed so you can undo it if the behavior worsens.
Microsoft’s guidance for older applications, including the troubleshooter and driver advice, is at Make older apps or programs compatible with the latest version of Windows.
For an error such as “This app or game can’t run on your device,” capture the complete wording, the Windows version, and the game edition. That information helps distinguish an operating-system or installer problem from a graphics-performance problem. Do not lower graphics settings to solve a failure that occurs before the game can render a frame.
5. Test real performance in a repeatable way
Once the game launches, stop treating the requirements list as the final answer. Test the conditions under which you intend to play.

- Set the target resolution and display mode. Choose the resolution you normally use and select fullscreen, windowed, or borderless mode deliberately. Note the display’s refresh rate if smooth motion matters to you.
- Choose a defined graphics configuration. Record the preset and individual options that matter, such as texture quality, shadows, anti-aliasing, or other effects. Do not report “tested” without naming the settings.
- Select a representative scene. Use the part of the game that is most relevant to your play: a busy level, combat encounter, city area, replay, or other repeatable sequence. A quiet menu or opening corridor can hide later problems.
- Repeat the same sequence. Use the same save, route, camera behavior, and approximate duration for each comparison. Consistency is more useful than a one-off impression.
- Observe more than average smoothness. Note pauses when loading, uneven motion, crashes, texture or lighting errors, input delay, audio problems, and whether the issue appears only in a particular scene.
- Record the conditions and result. Include the game version, Windows version, resolution, display mode, quality settings, scene, and what you observed. If you measure frame rate with a tool, record the tool and the measurement conditions; otherwise describe the behavior without inventing a number.
There is no universal acceptable frame-rate figure in the available guidance. A person playing a turn-based game at a modest refresh rate may accept a different result from someone playing a fast action game on a high-refresh display. State your target and report whether the test met it.

6. Compare fullscreen, windowed, and borderless modes on Windows 11
Windows 11 includes optimizations for windowed games for compatible DirectX 10 and DirectX 11 games running in windowed or borderless modes. Microsoft describes the feature as reducing frame latency in supported cases; it is not a general compatibility repair and does not apply to every older game.
To evaluate it, open Windows Settings, go to System > Display > Graphics, open the default graphics settings, and compare the windowed-game optimization setting enabled and disabled. Restart the game after changing the setting, then repeat the same scene and settings. Keep the conclusion scoped to this PC and this game: an improvement in one title does not establish an improvement in all titles. Automatic Super Resolution is not a general remedy for an old game that will not run. Its support depends on the device, Windows version, graphics runtime, resolution, and game configuration. Microsoft also states that it does not support x86-only games or games using DirectX 9, Vulkan, or OpenGL. Check those conditions before spending time changing the feature, and compare the result against the same repeatable scene rather than assuming that upscaling will fix a launch failure or every stutter.

8. Troubleshoot by symptom, not by guesswork
The installer or launcher fails
Verify that you are testing the intended edition, check for a publisher update, and run the Program Compatibility Troubleshooter. Capture the exact error and Windows version. Graphics-quality changes cannot repair a failure that occurs before launch.
The game launches but shows missing textures, incorrect lighting, or other visual corruption
Confirm that the GPU meets the game’s stated feature requirement and that Windows Update has no applicable device-driver update. Test the same scene after any documented game patch, and record whether the problem is tied to a particular display mode or graphics option.
The game is playable but stutters
Repeat the test with the same route and settings. Compare fullscreen with windowed or borderless mode only when the Windows 11 optimization feature is relevant, changing one variable at a time and restarting after the setting change. Describe when the stutter occurs instead of labeling the entire game “incompatible.”
The game crashes during a specific scene
Record the save, scene, settings, and frequency of the crash. Check the publisher’s compatibility notes and updates for that exact version, then retest after each documented change. A successful menu launch does not prove that every level is stable.
The result is below your personal target
Lower one graphics option or resolution, repeat the identical scene, and log the new conditions. If the change meets your target, report the trade-off explicitly. If it does not, the honest conclusion is that the game does not run well for your chosen target on this PC, even if it technically launches.
9. Write a precise final verdict
Use language that separates evidence from assumptions. A useful report identifies the tested combination rather than claiming that the game works for every computer.

Test: [resolution, display mode, preset, changed options, representative scene]

When asking for help, attach the saved dxdiag report only after removing personal information you do not want to share. Include the game’s exact requirements and your test conditions so another person can reproduce the comparison.
