The quickest check is on the phone itself: open Settings → About phone → Android version, then record the Android security update date and Build number. Next open Settings → System → Software update to see whether a system update is currently offered. Finally, check Google Play system update separately under Settings → Security and privacy → System and updates. Those screens show the phone’s present patch status; the manufacturer or carrier must confirm how long the exact model and regional variant will continue receiving updates.
What the security-update check actually tells you
Android exposes several update indicators, and they answer different questions. The Android security update date is the device’s recorded security-patch level. The Android version is the operating-system release. A Google Play system update is a separate update channel. A system screen that says the phone is up to date means no update is currently available through that check; it is not, by itself, a permanent end-of-support notice.
Google Android Help also warns that “Older devices can’t always run newer Android versions.” A phone can therefore remain on an older Android release while still receiving security patches, or it can stop receiving patches even though the phone continues to work normally. Treat the version number and the security-patch date as separate pieces of evidence.

Check the phone in five minutes
1. Open the Android-version information screen
- Open Settings.
- Tap About phone. On a tablet, the entry may be About tablet.
- Tap Android version.
- Write down the Android version, Android security update date, and Build number. Google’s newer instructions may also show the Google Play system update on this information screen.
Use the date exactly as displayed, including the day, month, and year where the phone provides them. The build number is useful when a manufacturer or carrier asks you to identify the installed software. It does not, by itself, prove that the phone is still in a supported period.

2. Check for an available Android system update
- Return to Settings.
- Open System → Software update.
- Read the status and follow the on-screen instructions if an update is offered.
Menu names can vary. Pixel devices may label this area Software updates, while other manufacturers may place it in a manufacturer-specific section. The purpose is the same: this check asks whether the phone can download a currently offered system update.
3. Check Google Play system updates independently
- Open Settings.
- Tap Security and privacy → System and updates.
- Select Google Play system update.
- Install an offered update, then restart if Android requests it.
This is not a substitute for the Android security-patch check. Keep both dates in your notes when they are displayed, because they describe different update mechanisms.
4. Record the device identity
- Manufacturer name.
- Exact model designation, including a model code if the About phone screen provides one.
- Mobile operator or carrier, if the phone was sold through one.
- Country or region variant, if known.
- Current Android security-update date.
- Build number.
These details matter because an update schedule can differ by device, manufacturer, and mobile operator. “An Android phone of this age” is not precise enough to establish a support deadline.
How to interpret each result

What “up to date” means—and what it does not mean
“Your system is up to date”
This message means the update service found no currently available system update for the phone at that moment. It can appear on a supported phone between releases, on a phone whose update is still rolling out, or on a model that has reached the end of its update distribution. The message alone cannot distinguish those cases.
A recent security-patch date
A recent date is a useful indication of the phone’s present patch level. It is not a published promise that the next patch will arrive, and it does not prove that every security issue discovered after that date is fixed. Save the date with the model and build number so a support representative can identify the exact software state.
An old Android version
An old version number does not automatically mean that no security updates exist. Security patches and major Android-version upgrades are different release decisions. Conversely, a newer-looking Android version does not replace the need to inspect the security-update date.
A current Google Play system date
Google Play system updates use a separate settings entry from the Android security-patch level. Report the two statuses separately rather than combining them into one claim that the entire phone is fully supported.

Three update clocks to keep separate
When people say a phone is “updated,” they may be referring to three different clocks. First is the Android security-patch date shown in Android version. Second is the installed Android release, such as the version number shown on that same screen. Third is the Google Play system update date. A phone can show different dates for all three without the display being contradictory.
The system-update screen adds a fourth piece of information: whether an update is available to download now. That is an availability check, not a historical record of every patch the phone should have received. Keep the date from the information screen and the result of the availability check in separate notes.
This distinction prevents two common errors. A current Play system date cannot be reported as the manufacturer’s Android security patch, and a new Android version cannot be used as proof that the security-patch field is current. Conversely, an older Android version does not alone prove that security maintenance has stopped.
Confirm support for the exact model
Use the manufacturer’s support information
For a non-Pixel phone, start with the manufacturer’s official support page or customer-support channel. Provide the exact model, model code, carrier, region, Android security-update date, and build number. Ask two distinct questions: “Until what date is this exact variant guaranteed to receive security updates?” and “What is the normal update cadence for this variant?”

A carrier edition, regional edition, or operator-controlled build can follow a different schedule from an unlocked or differently branded version.
Check with the carrier when it controls distribution
Google notes that update timing can vary by the mobile operator as well as by the device and manufacturer. If the phone was purchased from a carrier, ask that carrier to confirm the schedule for the specific operator variant. Include the build number so the representative does not mistake the phone for an unlocked model.
Use Android Enterprise Recommended information only when it applies
If the particular device is covered by the Android Enterprise Recommended program, its guidance provides an additional verification source. Participating original-equipment manufacturers are required to publish update plans and the date through which the device is guaranteed to receive security updates. This condition applies to participating devices in that program; it is not a universal requirement for every consumer Android phone.

Questions to ask support
A vague question such as “Is this phone still supported?” may produce a vague answer. Ask for a written response covering the exact model code, carrier or unlocked status, and country. Request the guaranteed security-support end date, the normal update cadence, and whether the current build is the latest build for that variant. If the representative gives only an Android-version upgrade answer, ask separately about security patches.
Save the response with the date you received it. If support says an update is delayed, ask whether the delay is associated with staged distribution or the operator variant, and whether there is a later date by which the update should be available. Do not turn an estimated arrival into a guaranteed end date.
Play Protect certification is a separate warning sign
Google Play Protect certification is not the same check as the Android security-patch date. Google explains that uncertified devices may not receive Android system updates or app updates. If the phone’s certification status is abnormal, investigate that issue separately using Google Play Help’s certification-status instructions.
Certification status should be treated as an additional risk indicator, not as proof of a particular patch date. A certified phone still needs its Android security-update date and model-specific support confirmation checked.
Troubleshoot a missing or confusing update
The menu labels do not match
Search Settings for Android version, Software update, or Google Play system update. Android manufacturers rearrange menus, and Pixel devices may use Software updates as the label. Do not assume that a different label means the function is absent.

- Check that you recorded the exact model and carrier or region variant.
- Compare the build number with the manufacturer’s support instructions.
- Ask whether the release is staged or delayed for your operator.
- Run the system-update check again later instead of treating one empty result as a support termination.
The settings result is a snapshot of what is available to that phone at that time. Only the maker or carrier can explain a model-specific delay or confirm an end date.
The phone shows an old security date and no available update
Record the date, Android version, build number, model, region, and carrier. Then request a support-end date from the manufacturer or operator. If they confirm that support has ended, no settings change can create a new security-update commitment. At that point, decide whether the device’s remaining functions justify continued use or whether replacement better fits your security requirements.

The Android version and Play system date look newer than the security date
Keep the values separate. A newer Android version or Google Play system update does not prove that the manufacturer’s Android security patch has the same date. The Android security-update field remains the relevant on-device indicator for that patch level.
The phone cannot install a newer Android release
That limitation can be normal for an older device. Google’s guidance states that older devices cannot always run newer Android versions. It does not, by itself, answer whether security patches are still being distributed, so verify the security date and the manufacturer’s support policy independently.

- Take a screenshot or write down the Android security-update date.
- Record the Android version and build number from the same screen.
- Record the Google Play system-update date separately.
- Note the exact model, carrier, and region.
- Write the date on which you performed the check.
- Save the manufacturer’s written support answer, including any stated end date or cadence.
Repeating this record monthly or whenever a security notice is expected lets you see whether the patch date advances. It still does not replace the manufacturer’s published support commitment, but it gives you an accurate history to provide to support. If more than one person uses the phone, keep the record where the device owner can find it rather than relying on memory.

When to keep using the phone and when to reassess it
There is no single age at which every Android phone becomes unsafe or unsupported. The decision depends on the confirmed support end date, the sensitivity of what you do on the phone, and whether the manufacturer or carrier can still provide patches for your exact variant.
- Support confirmed and patches current: Continue normal use, while checking the patch and Play system dates separately.
- No update currently offered but support not confirmed as ended: Contact the manufacturer or carrier before concluding that support has stopped.
- Support end date confirmed: Treat the phone as outside its guaranteed security-maintenance period and evaluate continued use against your security needs.
- Uncertified device: Investigate certification separately because Google says uncertified devices may miss system and app updates.
If you later compare replacement phones, use the same criteria: the manufacturer’s published security-support end date, expected update cadence, exact regional availability, and your own budget and required features. A generic Android-version number is not enough for that comparison.

Where is the Android security-update date?
Open Settings, tap About phone (or About tablet), then Android version. Record the Android security update date shown there, along with the Android version and Build number.

Does “Your system is up to date” prove that support has not ended?
No. It means the update check found no currently available system update. It does not establish a permanent end-of-support date; confirm the exact model’s schedule with the manufacturer or carrier.
Is a Google Play system update the same as an Android security patch?
No. Google Play system updates use a separate update channel. Check and record that date independently from the Android security-update date.
Can an older Android version still receive security updates?
Yes, it can. Android version upgrades and security patches are separate decisions. Google also notes that older devices cannot always run newer Android versions.
What information should I give the manufacturer?
Provide the manufacturer, exact model and model code, carrier or operator, country or region, Android security-update date, and Build number. Ask for the guaranteed security-support end date and normal update cadence.
Why does my phone’s menu look different?
Manufacturers rearrange Settings. Search for Android version, Software update, or Google Play system update. Pixel devices may label the system-update area Software updates.
What if the phone is uncertified by Play Protect?
Certification is a separate status check. Google says uncertified devices may not receive Android system updates or app updates, so investigate certification in addition to checking the patch date.
Can Android Enterprise Recommended prove support for every phone?
No. Its published update-plan and guaranteed-date requirement applies to participating devices in that program. It should not be generalized to every consumer Android phone.
The Bottom Line
Check About phone → Android version for the Android security-update date and build number, check the system-update screen, and check Google Play system update separately. Then verify the guaranteed support end date and update cadence for the exact model, carrier, and region. An old Android version, a current Play system date, or an “up to date” message alone cannot answer that question.
