Check the exact package name and version, verify its registry signature and provenance, and review the release’s source, files, lockfile entry, and install behavior. No single passing command or scan proves a release is safe: each check answers a different question.
Start with the exact package release
Before interpreting a warning or a clean scan, identify the artifact you actually installed or plan to install. Record the package name, exact version, registry, corresponding lockfile entry, and when the dependency was added or updated.
- Check for a misspelled name, an unexpected package scope, or a similarly named package that could be mistaken for the intended dependency.
- Confirm the locked version is the one your project expected, rather than relying on a version range in
package.json. - Note whether the package came from the expected registry. Typosquatting and dependency confusion are recognized package-distribution risks; ENISA discusses both in its 2026 Technical Advisory for Secure Use of Package Managers.
Verify registry signatures and provenance
Run npm’s signature check
For an installed dependency tree, run:
npm audit signaturesnpm documents that this command checks registry signatures and provenance attestations. Its provenance guidance specifies npm CLI v9.5.0 or later and installing dependencies with npm install or npm ci. Check the current npm documentation if your CLI reports different behavior or syntax.
A missing attestation can mean that a package has no provenance; it is not, by itself, proof of tampering. An invalid signature or attestation is a stronger integrity warning and warrants investigation. Do not dismiss an error without understanding which check failed and which exact package version it refers to.

Read the package’s provenance details
When provenance is available, inspect it on the package’s npm page. npm describes fields that can identify the build environment, workflow, source commit, build file, and transparency-log entry. Compare those details with the project’s expected repository and release process: an unfamiliar workflow, commit, or publisher relationship is a reason to investigate.
Provenance is evidence about how and where a package was built and published, not a guarantee that the inputs were harmless. npm also notes that deleted or private repositories can prevent it from establishing the source relationship. Treat an unavailable source link differently from a provenance record that points to an unexpected source.

Review what changed in the release
Compare the suspicious version with its source commit or tag, changelog, and nearby releases. Look for changes that do not fit the stated release, especially:
- Obfuscated or difficult-to-explain code.
- Unexpected network requests or access to credentials and environment variables.
- New or unexplained binaries.
- Changes to lifecycle scripts, particularly install-time hooks, or scripts that download additional code or binaries.
- Unexpected maintainer or publisher changes.
This is a manual assessment, not a verdict generated by provenance. A correctly signed release can still contain malicious code if the source, workflow, publisher account, or build environment was compromised.

Check lockfile integrity and install scripts
Review the package’s lockfile entry and its integrity value. ENISA’s 2026 advisory describes npm lockfiles as using SHA-512 integrity metadata. This hash helps establish whether the downloaded artifact matches the value recorded in the lockfile; it cannot establish that the artifact was benign when that value was first recorded.
Inspect the package’s lifecycle scripts as well as the project’s installation behavior. An unexpected preinstall or postinstall action that fetches or executes code deserves particular scrutiny. A matching lockfile hash and a normal-looking install are useful evidence, but neither substitutes for reviewing what the release does.

Use vulnerability audits for a separate question
Run the usual vulnerability audit separately:
npm auditnpm audit checks dependency information against known vulnerability advisories. It does not establish whether a release was intentionally malicious. A clean result means no matching known advisory was found; a compromised release may not yet have one. ENISA distinguishes vulnerabilities from supply-chain attacks for this reason.
Popularity, download volume, and a familiar maintainer can add context, but they are not proof of safety. ENISA cautions that popularity metrics can be misleading or artificially inflated and should not be relied on in isolation.

If concern remains, contain and assess exposure
- Stop installing or updating to the suspect release while you investigate; determine which projects and environments resolved that exact version.
- Establish whether it was only downloaded or whether its code or install scripts ran, and identify what permissions and secrets were available in those environments.
- Isolate affected systems or remove the dependency as appropriate to the incident, preserving enough information to understand what happened.
- If evidence indicates the package executed where tokens, passwords, signing keys, or cloud credentials were accessible, assess and rotate exposed credentials as warranted. Review relevant access and sessions.
Containment should follow the evidence and impact. OpenAI’s account of its TanStack npm supply-chain incident, amended June 2026, describes actions including isolating impacted systems and identities, revoking sessions, rotating impacted credentials, and reviewing repository access. Those were incident-specific measures, not a universal response checklist for every npm alert.
What each check can establish

If you use additional security tooling, check its current documentation for the specific functions it covers: signature verification, provenance and publisher identity, exact locked and transitive versions, advisories, suspicious behavior, and install scripts are distinct capabilities. ENISA’s tool examples are illustrative, not endorsements.
