Start with the exact device and the seller—not the discount badge. Confirm the model, configuration and condition; check who is selling it and what returns and warranty apply; then compare the delivered price with the same device from credible sellers in your country. For a used or refurbished device, Apple’s coverage lookup is one useful check, but it does not prove that the seller or the listing is legitimate.
Confirm the device matches the listing
Before judging the price, identify exactly what is being offered. iPads and MacBooks can look similar while differing in generation, chip, screen size, memory, storage or connectivity. A lower price may simply be for a different configuration—or for a device that is not new.
- Record the exact model and generation, chip, size, memory, storage and connectivity.
- Check whether the condition is new, open-box, used or refurbished. Treat these as different offers, not interchangeable labels.
- Confirm which accessories are included and whether any regional differences matter, such as keyboard layout or cellular connectivity.
- Save a screenshot of the listing showing the model, condition, seller, price, shipping and promised accessories.
Check who is selling it and what protections apply
Find the seller’s legal or business identity and contact details, and read the written terms before paying. Establish who handles a return or warranty claim: Apple, the retailer or a third-party refurbisher. Check the return window, warranty provider and duration, service route, payment method and any conditions or exclusions.
Ask for a receipt or invoice that identifies the device, purchase date, price, receipt or invoice number, and reseller contact information. Apple’s guidance says the serial number should appear if that reseller normally includes serial numbers on receipts: Keep your receipt after you buy an Apple device.

Use Apple’s coverage lookup as one check
For a used or refurbished iPad or MacBook, ask for its serial number and enter it in Apple’s coverage lookup. Compare the displayed device information with the listing. A coverage result can provide useful information about the device, but it does not authenticate the seller, establish the device’s physical condition or verify every claim in the listing.
Where possible, match the serial number to the actual device rather than relying only on a number typed into a message, a box or a seller-provided screenshot. For an in-person purchase, inspect the device and confirm its identifying details and condition before paying. If the seller will not provide enough information for you to verify what is being sold, pause the purchase.

Understand what “refurbished” means
A refurbished label does not necessarily mean Apple refurbished the device. Apple says it is the exclusive provider of Apple Certified Refurbished products. Its stated process includes full functionality testing, replacement of defective modules, cleaning and inspection, and a standard one-year limited warranty. A third-party refurbished device should be assessed using that seller’s disclosed inspection process, warranty and return terms. Do not assume it receives Apple’s refurbishment process or warranty simply because the listing uses the word “refurbished.” Policies vary by seller and region. As one regional example—not a general retailer rule—Apple’s U.S. Education store says its refurbished products can be returned by request within 14 calendar days after receipt.

Compare the full offer, not the discount claim
Compare the offer with the current price for the identical model, configuration and condition from Apple and reputable sellers in your country. A percentage-off badge or an old launch price is not enough to establish value. Include shipping and other charges in the total, and weigh protection and documentation alongside cost.
