Before sending money, check the offer through SEBI’s official Recognised Intermediaries directory. Search the person’s or entity’s legal name, trade name, or registration number, then select the category that matches the role being claimed, such as investment adviser, mutual fund, or alternative investment fund.
A listing confirms only the identity and regulatory category shown in SEBI’s record. It does not by itself prove that every separately marketed scheme is registered, that the offer is suitable for you, or that returns are guaranteed. Match the directory record with the actual person, company, contact details and documents in front of you before transferring funds.
What a SEBI registration check actually tells you
SEBI’s Recognised Intermediaries directory is the primary place to verify whether a person or entity appears in a SEBI-recognised market category. SEBI Investor Support advises investors to check intermediary registration before investing. The directory separates records into categories, so the result must be interpreted in context.

The reviewed SEBI material does not describe one universal, scheme-level lookup covering every product that may be advertised as an “investment scheme.” Therefore, do not convert an intermediary match into a blanket statement that the entire offer is SEBI-registered. Verify the relevant product record when the product type has its own official listing or documentation.

Step 1: Identify exactly what is being offered
Write down the offer in neutral terms before searching. Marketing language can hide the legal role of the provider. Determine whether you are dealing with an investment adviser, a mutual fund, an alternative investment fund, or another market entity.
Look beyond the headline name
- Record the person’s full name and the company’s legal name, if both are shown.
- Copy the trade name, app name or brand used in the pitch.
- Note the registration number printed on the website, agreement, presentation or message.
- Identify what you are being asked to buy: advice, units, a pooled vehicle, a managed account, trading signals or another arrangement.
- Save the address, telephone number and email supplied by the promoter.
Do not assume that a familiar brand, a professional-looking website or a certificate image identifies the regulated entity. Your search needs the underlying legal or trade name, not just a slogan.
Choose the category that matches the claimed role
SEBI’s directory is organized by category. Start with the role the promoter claims to perform. An adviser should be checked as an investment adviser; a fund vehicle should be checked in the fund category that applies to it. If the pitch combines several roles, check each named entity separately rather than forcing the whole arrangement into one category.

Step 2: Open SEBI’s Recognised Intermediaries directory directly
Use SEBI’s own Recognised Intermediaries directory, reached from SEBI’s official website or Investor Support pages. SEBI’s investor guidance points people to this registration check and also carries an alert about unauthorized money-mobilisation schemes.
Type the official SEBI address yourself or use a bookmark you created from the genuine SEBI website. Do not make a forwarded link, social-media profile or promoter’s screenshot your primary source. A screenshot can be old, altered or taken from a different entity’s record.
The directory provides search fields for a member or trade name and for a registration number. It also displays categories such as registered mutual funds, alternative investment funds and investment advisers. The labels and records are administrative data and may change, so use the live page when you are making the decision to invest.

Step 3: Search by name, trade name and registration number
- Start with the registration number. If the promoter supplied one, enter it exactly as shown, including letters and punctuation where the directory requires them. A number that returns no result is a stop signal until independently explained.
- Search the legal name. Remove promotional wording and search the company or individual’s formal name. Try the spelling shown in the agreement, invoice or regulatory disclosure.
- Search the trade name. A business may market itself under a name different from its legal name. Search that trade name as well, then inspect the legal identity in the result.
- Select the relevant category. Run the search in the category matching the claimed activity. A result in another category is not an automatic substitute.
- Open and read the full result. Compare all identifying fields rather than relying on a name appearing somewhere in the list.
Keep a dated copy of the result or write down the exact record details. The directory can change after you search, and the fact that a result existed on one day does not prove that its status will remain unchanged.
Step 4: Match the directory record to the person contacting you
A name match is only the beginning. SEBI’s June 2, 2025 Investment Adviser Investor Charter specifies disclosure of the adviser’s registration type, registration number, validity, full address and telephone details. Use those fields as a cross-check when the offer is presented as advice.
Compare these identity fields

Do not “average out” discrepancies. If the legal name, category, number, address or telephone information does not line up, pause the transaction and contact SEBI through information obtained independently from its official website. Do not use only the phone number supplied in the solicitation to resolve the discrepancy.
Step 5: Interpret a positive result narrowly
If the search returns an exact, current-looking match, state only what the record supports: the named entity appears in the selected SEBI category. That is useful evidence of identity and category, but it is not an endorsement of a promised return or a suitability assessment.
A listing does not guarantee returns
SEBI registration is not a promise that an investment will make money. It does not remove market risk, credit risk, liquidity risk or the possibility that an investment loses value. Be especially cautious when a salesperson treats registration as proof of guaranteed or unusually high returns.

A listing does not prove suitability
The directory cannot determine whether the product matches your objectives, time horizon, financial capacity or tolerance for loss. A registered adviser’s existence does not make every recommendation appropriate for every investor.

A listing does not automatically cover every scheme
The directory distinguishes intermediary and product categories. A registered adviser, manager or other entity may promote or discuss products that have their own legal identity. The reviewed SEBI sources do not establish a universal lookup that turns one intermediary record into registration proof for every separately named scheme. Ask for the product’s exact legal name and the official record or disclosure applicable to that product.
What to do when there is no exact match
A failed search can result from a spelling variation, a recently changed record or a number entered incorrectly, but it can also indicate an unregistered or impersonating operation. Treat it as unresolved, not as permission to proceed.
- Re-enter the number carefully and search without extra spaces or promotional text.
- Search the full legal name, then the trade name, using the category the promoter claims.
- Compare the result with the agreement and bank-account beneficiary name.
- Ask the promoter for the legal entity name, registration type and current number in writing.
- Check the information again through SEBI’s official directory, not through a link sent by the promoter.
- Do not transfer money while the identity or category remains unresolved.
A similar-sounding result is not an exact match. If the caller is an individual but the directory lists a company, confirm that the individual is authorized to act for that company through independently obtained contact information. If the offer demands immediate payment while avoiding these checks, end the conversation and retain the messages.

Recognize unauthorized money-mobilisation warning signs
SEBI Investor Support includes an alert about unauthorized money-mobilisation schemes. Pressure tactics do not prove fraud by themselves, but they are a reason to stop and verify before sending funds.
- A promise of guaranteed, fixed or unusually high returns with little or no risk.
- A demand to pay immediately because an allocation, bonus or deadline will disappear.
- Instructions to send money to a personal account or to an account whose beneficiary name does not match the identified entity.
- Refusal to provide a legal name, registration type, number, address or written terms.
- Reliance on a certificate image, seal, social profile or chat message instead of a live SEBI record.
- Claims that one registration number automatically approves every product, app or scheme offered by a group.
When any of these occurs, preserve the advertisement, messages, payment instructions and documents. Do not send a “small test payment” to see whether the promoter is genuine; that does not verify registration.
Checking an investment adviser specifically
SEBI’s investment-adviser FAQ says registration status and contact details for advisers are available through the Recognised Intermediaries list. The adviser charter dated June 2, 2025 identifies the disclosures an investor should expect: registration type, registration number, validity, full address and telephone details.

For an advice service, compare those disclosures with the information on the adviser’s agreement and website. A person offering tips through a messaging channel may describe the service informally, but the verification still concerns the legal entity and registered category. Do not treat a “research analyst,” “wealth coach” or similar label as interchangeable with an investment-adviser registration unless the directory record supports that category.

The directory includes categories for registered mutual funds and alternative investment funds. Select the category that corresponds to the entity named in the documents, then compare the fund or manager identity and registration details.
Pay attention to whether the document names the regulated fund entity or merely uses a product nickname. A social-media post can use a name that resembles a fund without being the fund’s legal name. If the offer is a private pool, managed account or another arrangement that does not clearly fit the displayed category, ask which official record applies and do not assume that an adviser’s listing validates it.
How to document your check
A simple record makes it easier to detect changes and explain your decision later. Save the following in one folder:
- The exact legal and trade names searched.
- The registration number entered and the category selected.
- The date and approximate time of the search.
- A copy or written transcription of the returned record, including status or validity information shown.
- The offer document, agreement, payment instructions and contact details.
- Notes explaining any mismatch and how it was resolved.
Recheck immediately before investing, especially if the offer has been pending for days or the promoter changes the bank account, legal name, product name or terms. Registry records and displayed dates are live administrative details. Guidance summarized here was current on October 13, 2026, but the directory itself should be treated as the current authority at the moment of verification.
Worked examples of the correct interpretation
Example: exact adviser match
You receive advice from a company that supplies a legal name and registration number. The directory returns the same name in the investment-adviser category, and the address and telephone details correspond to the charter disclosures. You may accurately say that the named entity appears as an investment adviser in the directory. You still need to evaluate the advice, fees, risks and product documents separately.

Example: adviser match, separate scheme name
An adviser’s record matches, but the salesperson asks you to invest in a separately named pooled scheme. The adviser result does not, by itself, establish that the pooled scheme is a registered product. Ask for the scheme’s legal identity and the official category or disclosure applicable to it before considering the investment.
Example: similar name, different category
A search finds a company with a nearly identical name, but it appears in a category different from the role claimed in the pitch. That is not a satisfactory match. Stop and independently confirm who is contacting you and what activity the record authorizes.
Example: screenshot with no live result
A promoter sends a certificate image, but the registration number cannot be found in the live directory. The image is not a substitute for the official result. Resolve the discrepancy independently or do not send money.
Questions the directory cannot answer
The registration check is an identity and category check, not a complete investment review. You still need to read the contractual terms, fees, lock-in or withdrawal conditions, risk disclosures, ownership of the receiving account and the legal identity of the product. None of those questions is answered merely because a search returns a name.
Likewise, a current listing does not establish that a promoter’s performance claims are accurate. Treat projections, testimonials and urgency separately from the regulatory-status check. If the offer cannot survive basic identity verification without pressure, the safest action is to pause.
